Is there a checked bag fee for that?
David, a devout reader of the blog, lives in Hong Kong and took his son to the airport Thursday afternoon to pick up the in-laws. While waiting for the flight, he suddenly noticed this particularly interesting piece of lugagge going by:

That led to – a few minutes later – this memorable photo.

Not bad for the price of short-term parking, right?
Don’t forget – those of you in the Westchester area will have your chance for pictures on Saturday at the County Center. Click here for more info.

Not bad at all!
In case no one saw it earlier, amidst the Derek Jeter stuff, I had posted that I got a newsletter from the Trenton Thunder which said that the NY Yankees 2009 WS Trophy was going to be on display in the concourse of Waterfront Stadium in Trenton during their opening night game, April 8th.
Who’s “K 11″
There are some painful bloggers on here. NJ is the perfect guy in fornt of your big hitters. Wade Boggs led off for a long time and you know why? It was because he didn’t make a lot of outs and he got on base…that is what you want!
atta boy Freddy. Break up that No No
Well, no one can top that. Instant Lo Hud Classic. And somewhere PAB whimpers.
hello?! anybody out there?
Guru, What’s wrong with having a 30-30 guy hitting behind Derek ??? Who by the way will hit 40 doubles and 8-10 triples…..This is all part of Curtis’s skill-set…You’re going to see a different Curtis Granderson this season, that’s if anyone has really even seen him….
And if Tokyo, Beijing, Hong Kong and Westchester are not accessible to you maybe Trenton, NJ is:

Thanks for your thoughts Lohud friends. Funny, but it does mean something to me.
AustinMac, I am so sorry for your losses….
austinmac,
Youre welcome. Hang in there.
I am a Hong Kong native and a Yankees fans since 2000. The press conference they held at the K11 mall will be 17:00 HK time – which means I am still in the office dreaming about touching the trophy…..poor….
That is so cool. To bad it is supposed to snow Saturday otherwise I’d go.
I wanna see the trophy come to Massachusetts. The Red Sox used my taxpayer money to drag the ’04 trophy all around the state. I think it’s only fair the state pays the Yankees to transport it someplace here in Western Mass where you’ll find over 3 in 10 folks are Yankee fans.
Austin-
May you find strength and comfort in your time of need.

if cg bats 2nd where does johnson bat with his .410 obp ??
another thing is no way will girrardi bat cg 2nd unless he proves he can hit lh pitching
he was an automatic out against lefties last year
Wasn’t there some thought about hitting Granderson 2nd against RHP?
At any rate, I think they envisioned NJ in the 2-hole when they signed him.
The lineup was pretty steady and easy to guess (so easy miggs could do it
) last season.
This season’s roster’s more flexible, so Girardi might go undefeated in GTLU!
there are a lot of interchangable players in baseball & on the yankees meaning it wouldn’t make much of a difference if tex or arod batted 3-5 & so on
cg batting 2nd against righties would probably be fine unless in time girrardi want’s too try something new like switch damon & jeter because of jeter hitting into double plays & it worked well
but no way is girrardi going to put an automatic out in front of the big hitters unless cg gets better against lefties
he is a totally different player rh vs lh
bru, Johnson would hit 7th after Posada, before Swisher….Many bottom of the order rallys could start with him hitting in that slot….
Ideally, you want your best hitters to hit as high up in the lineup as possible because they would get more ABs.
Freddy just stole home
Pat M.
who hits 5th?
posada has a better obp than cano & more power & drives in more runs so i would not bat cano ahead of him
cano had 25 hr/85 rbi in 637 ab
posada 22 hr/ 81 rbi in 383 ab
i just would not put cano ahead of posada
bru……Robinson Cano, it’s time for him to reach the next level, besides he’s really the only stick who can fill that role….
Awesomeness.
bru, we’re looking at 2 ships going in different directions

Desmond C, how did you become a Yankee fan in HK?
You should get together with Roger from Amsterdam who has just moved to HK. You can have an international LoHud summit meeting!
Nick in SF, How did you end up in San Jose from Charlotte ??? Southwest Airlines
No, my flight into SFO was diverted; original landing aborted during approach due to dangerous wind/rain pattern.
That kind of stuff doesn’t usually get to me, but I must admit that excessive thoughts about the tv show L
ST (about a plane crash) weighed slighty on my nerves…
Taking off again for SFO soon, wish me luck.
Grrrr, I missed listening to the Cal game!
Nick in SF …..UCLA just won by 4 ( push bet ) ..I have Cal + 1 and their down 2 with 3.0 seconds
Nick in SF…Final USC 66 Cal-Berkley Bears 63
Booooooooooooo!
My Cal-UCLA-Alabama teaser was a winner, at least.
Nick in SF….Have a nice puddle jump….I have Zaga over Portland laying 8.5, They’re up by 29, so I’ll pick up a few coins for the night
Seriously, why no Taiwan???
I wouldn’t be so quick to sell them out for PRC lucre.
The Yanks don’t ‘eph’ around – and that’s what I love about this team and organization. No half-arse’in – that’s one awesome banner and a great idea sporting the trophy around the far East.
I attempted to meet the trophy today at 2:30 pm in Hong Kong at the K11 mall. Unfortunately when I arrived I was told that it was only open to media and that it would not begin until 4:30 pm. I couldn’t wait around and skip the whole afternoon, so I went back to work. The mlb.com article on the visit to HK was apparently wrong. Oh well, at least we got the trophy. That’s the most important thing. There WILL be other opportunities…
AUSTINMAC – from last thread – I’m a LoHud skimmer and occasional poster (I gots nothing really to say nor the time to research anything to back it up with and readily admit it[!]).
Sorry to hear of your loss. Hang in there.

The following is an interesting article out of the Detroit News that talks about Granderson and Damon. We’ll have to see which Granderson plays for the Yankees in 2010.
Damon getting 7M out of the Tigers while practically begging for a job would be a coup for Boras and just reenforces the “one dumb owner” concept again when it comes to giving out dumb contracts in MLB.

Austinmac,

I am so sorry for your loss.
“Guru, What’s wrong with having a 30-30 guy hitting behind Derek ???”
In what world is Granderson a 30/30 guy???
AustinMac:
Such sad news.
Condolences to you and your family.
“Damon getting 7M out of the Tigers while practically begging for a job would be a coup for Boras and just reenforces the “one dumb owner” concept again when it comes to giving out dumb contracts in MLB.”
When Damon called the Yankees practically begging for a job, prior to them signing Winn, Cashman offered him $6M.
“When Damon called the Yankees practically begging for a job, prior to them signing Winn, Cashman offered him $6M.”
With 3M of it deferred with no interest.
Craw:
That’s true. We don’t know what Detroit’s deal may include in that regard (if there’s a deal at all). We do know Cash was going to ask Hal to exceed budget if Damon were to agree to take $6M, even with the deferred $$.
Damon is worth $7M anyway. Probably a few bucks more. It’s not like they’d be paying $7M for Jason Varitek. Damon’s still got some offensive game and can play 90-100 games in the outfield without killing you.
laughing at the thought of damon in comerica’s OF. they will need to line up for a relay throw to the SS!
LOL at the article. Granderson has one bad year and the guy says he let the team down. Did he let the team down the other years? Sheesh. I’m not in wait and see mode with Granderson; I am very confident he will have a big year.
i think cash made the decision before last season ended that damon was no longer a viable starting outfielder. As a DH/4th outfielder, he was worth much less to them and cashman valued him accordingly. The difference that couldnt be overcome was really about whether johnny is a starting outfielder and should be paid as such or whether he is just a dh. cashman saw it one way, damon the other way.
if damon gets more money from someone else, it doesnt mean that cashman and the yankees were wrong, each team has to place a value on what a specific player is worth to thier team, not in the abstract. To another team, damon might be worth more than $6M, might even be worth the $11M damon says he thinks he should get. but the yankees offered what they though damon was worth as a dh/4th OF to them and that wasnt enough for damon.
good luck to johnny, but i dont see the yankees missing a beat without him.
Good post, Y’s Guy.
But, darn, I was hoping we were done with Damon. Oh, well…
“LOL at the article. Granderson has one bad year and the guy says he let the team down. Did he let the team down the other years?”
Not sure he’s had a truly bad year. In four full seasons, he’s had two years when he’s been about average (offensively) and two where he was considerably above average, including one where he was probably one of the 5-10 best offensive players in the AL. I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Don’t think he’ll get a sniff of 85 extra base hits ever again, but .275 – .280 average while slugging .475 – .500 should workout just fine.
Frank, the point was that this writer went overboard in criticizing Granderson off of just one year. What was up with the comment about his “soul being stirred” by other things besides baseball? Is that the rumoer we heard that Detroit thought he was distracted by his charitable work? If they want Damon, they can have him. I just hope fans and normal sportswriters (not counting Lupica and his cronies) don’t blame the Yankees because the Yankees did their level best to re-sign Johnny.
“Damon getting 7M out of the Tigers while practically begging for a job would be a coup for Boras and just reenforces the “one dumb owner” concept again when it comes to giving out dumb contracts in MLB.”
Yeah, I read an article earlier this week about how Ilitch has been that “one dumb owner” on multiple occasions, specifically when Boras couldn’t find a team for Ordonez or Pudge. After seeing how well those contracts worked out, Ilitch probably won’t be able to resist bailing Boras out one more time. The article mentions $7M+ per year and that Boras is still asking for 2 years, which makes it look like he wants to match that 2/14 offer from Cashman…I’m just not sure why since that was never really an “offer”. By all public appearances, there is ZERO competition for his services, so I don’t see why they would consider going anywhere close to $7M or 2 years.
Last offseason the Yankees flexed thier muscle in free agency, using thier vast resources to score 3 top-shelf players. This offseason, the Yankees flexed thier muscle again, only this time by taking advantage of teams willing to give up talent for payroll relief. Vazquez and Granderson are worth alot more than what the Yankees gave up for them, but in both cases the other teams saved alot of money in the exchange.
The Yankees resource advantage shows up in all areas, free agency, the trade market, the draft, and the international talent pool.
Thanks to Cash money and the organization for using our dollars to make the team better! If other teams continuously re-invested thier revenues into thier team and thier brand, they still wouldn’t be the Yankees, but they would be alot better off.
Guys like Granderson become available because they have off-seasons.
Sometimes, players need a change of scenery. It re-engergizes them.
I think Curtis probably feels he has a lot to prove and he has always had the reputation of being a hard worker and good guy.
If he is healthy, I expect him to have a big season, both offensively and defensively.
Betsy:
Not sure I’d want a guy whose soul isn’t stirred by things other than baseball. I’ve seen nothing in Granderson that would suggest his committment to the game isn’t true.
I think his “WOW!” year of 2007 set a standard that is pretty good distance from what really should be expected of the guy and perhaps that has hurt him a little in the eyes of some. So when he’s not hitting .300, slugging .550, and getting 85 extra basehits, it’s incorrectly assumed his head is elsewhere, when the truth of the matter is he’s really a .275-.280 hitter, .490 slugging, 60-65 extra basehit guy who had an exceptional year early in his career.
Granderson was the Tigers Derek Jeter. His face was on a ton of ads throughout Detroit and he may have been the most popular athlete in the city.
He was a huge star in Motown. Perhaps the author felt his off-field marketing got in the way of his playing.
In truth, he probably just had an off-season. It happens to just about everybody except Mariano Rivera.

” Sen. John McCain has introduced legislation requiring manufacturers of dietary supplements to register with the Food and Drug Administration and to disclose the ingredients.”
“McCain said his bill “absolutely” would have allowed the FDA to recall ephedra immediately when its adverse effects became known. Ephedra was linked to the deaths of Vikings lineman Korey Stringer and Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler.”
on the surface , this sounds fine. who wouldn’t want ingredients listed and quality control oversight with supplements.
but there’s a story behind the story. in the tragic Steve Bechler death he was training in a rubber suit trying to lose weight fast mandated by the team . he was using Xenadrine which the most used over the counter supplement in sports at the time.
i used it and was very familiar with it .it had ephedra , caffeine and other natural ingredients that were good for neural activity in the brain which helps sports performance. ephedra has been around for ever as a natural asthma remedy.
but in sports it was used for alertness and energy. this helped many to lose weight so it was used as a weight loss supplement by many in sports and in the general population.
to make a long story shorter, here’s the problem.
ephedra to pseudoephedrine is like coffee to caffeine. pseudoephedrine is the active ingredient that gives the energy and alertness.
here’s the interesting thing. 100% pseudoephedrine was sudafed for years until maybe a year ago when they changed it.
so congress led by mccain banned ephedra because of bechler’s death but did not ban sudafed which consisted 100% the active ingredient in ephedra. it would be like banning coffee but not banning caffeine.
but that’s what they did. you need to understand child sudafed was given to babies. it was recommended by doctors to be given to babies. if i remember right, and i am writing this from memory, the amount of ephedra found in bechler was the same amount as in a baby dose of sudafed.
bechler died of heat stroke wearing a rubber suit and hadn’t eaten in days. but the conclusion was that a baby’s dose of ephedra has an impact on his death.
if this was true, ephedra and sudafed should have both been banned. the fact is just the natural remedy was banned and the over the counter pharmaceutical kept being produced and sold for over 5 years( and is still available but not over the counter).
sudafed was also approved for use in the olympics after the bechler death. a 30 milligram sudafed and a cup of coffee gave a similar feel to xenadrine, and what i and other did after ephedra was banned .
it is obvious that mc cain was after the natural supplement but not the pharmaceutical. i’ll leave that up to you to guess his motives.
if you remember that mccain wants to ban natural “coffee” made by small farmers but not pharmaceutical grade”caffeine” when made by a pharmaceutical company and you’ll have the concept.
personally i have no problem with more control of supplements, but i don’t want pharmaceutical big business to be allowed to make a product that has the same active ingredient that is in the the natural product that is banned.
ban both or allow both.
“laughing at the thought of damon in comerica’s OF. they will need to line up for a relay throw to the SS!”
manny was ahead of his time. one of the funniest plays ever is when he cut off damon’s throw when he wasn’t more that 50 feet from damon.
manny then thew the ball into the infield.
Randy-
Is that why I have to show like 3 forms of ID to buy Sudafed when I have a cold???
New post- Pinch hitting: Jason Rodriguez
erica-
i think sudafed was used in making meth in illegal homemade meth labs.
i just know about it from the sports side of things.
the whole thing would have flown right over my head had i not been using xenedrine and knowing a lot of people in the orioles organization at the time.
my personal conclusion was that either john mcain was in bed with the pharmceutical companies or just really stupid.
how do you ban something and then have a product that was 100% it’s active ingredient continue to be sold to the general population including children and babies?
but that is what happened with ephedra and sudafed.
Erica, I just bought a bottle of cough syrup and it felt like I was going through airport security. I was told it was some sort of anti-meth thing.
Late to the party, but I would like to add my condolences austinmac.
Randy
It is interesting that rubber suits are still used after the deaths of college wrestlers. My son wrestled in high school and they got a lot stricter on allowable weight loss. Even so, they would run and work out w/ lots of clothes on to make weight (after which they would drink). But that is temporary weight loss by dehydration, which wouldn’t make sense for a pitcher or lineman.
Allow me to also offer my condolences austinmac.
They are schleppppping the thing around like it was the Holy Grail. Time to get real…
This post capsulizes why LHYB is superlative! Thanks David, for a great contribution.
