Yankees release statement on Gene Monahan
First, a quick announcement. Sam and I will be video chatting here at the LoHud Yankees Blog on Monday at noon. We’ll be talking about the Yankees offseason, their upcoming spring training decisions and whatever questions are sent our way. Should be a solid way to spend part of your Presidents Day, and we hope it’s a good way to kickoff Pitchers and Catchers Week.
Here’s the Yankees’ statement regarding head athletic trainer Gene Monahan.
The New York Yankees announced today that Head Athletic Trainer Gene Monahan has developed a significant illness and is taking a medical leave of absence effective immediately, which will cause him to miss 2010 spring training in Tampa, Florida, and possibly the first portion of the 2010 regular season. Prior to this season, Mr. Monahan had worked 47 consecutive spring trainings for the Yankees organization from 1963 through 2009.
Mr. Monahan will remain in New York to receive extensive treatment, which will take place over the next several weeks.
“I miss not being around my professional family already, but I’m battling,” Mr. Monahan said. “The New York Yankees have gone above and beyond in this most difficult time. I couldn’t do this alone, but with the support and love of my immediate family, my family within our organization and the dedication and expertise of many fine doctors, I look forward to resuming my role with the team this season.”
Mr. Monahan is the longest-tenured head athletic trainer in the Major Leagues, having worked in that capacity for the last 38 years. He was honored with induction into the New York State Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame in 2007. In 2009, Mr. Monahan received the National Athletic Trainers Association Distinguished Athletic Trainer Award.
Steve Donohue, who has worked 25 consecutive seasons as Assistant Athletic Trainer under Mr. Monahan and 31 overall seasons in the Yankees organization, will serve in Mr. Monahan’s role during his absence.

cancer??
Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery, Mr. Monahan.
Good luck. Sounds like he’ll be back soon.
(check out espn if you’re a fan of Carl Crawford)

cancer??

He’s ill. That should be enough information. How about allowing him some privacy and dignity. Not everything is for public consumption.
Prayers and good wishes to “Geno”!
I’ll leave you all with this random thought for the day before I head for the ice rink……
Charles Barkley pondered; if Gatorade is so effective, why use all time players in the commercials and not a scrub who got better from using it.
Because in the words of Spike Lee, people want to “be like Mike,” not some scrub.
here’s something even Abe PECOTA wouldn’t waffle on:
get well soon, Mr. Monahan.
Get well soon Gene!!
I remember his dad from days pasts…..Hope all goes well for Geno
Wishing Gene a speedy and full recovery.
Obvious point of the day: As long as the future resembles the past, PECOTA predictions are very useful. Deviations going forward, however, compromise the predictive value, pretty much by definition.
An individual player’s percentage chance of breakout vs. actual; percentage of collapse versus actual; injury; a trade; a divorce; a family death; a new baby; you name it… all of them cause the actual experience to deviate from the predicted. And that’s why you play the games.
And here’s to Geno: You are in our thoughts and prayers. Be well.
Get well soon Geno!
Sorry if this was posted previous, but nice article on Montero:

One interesting name from that article was minor-league catching coordinator Julio Mosquera. Never heard of him, in fact I didn’t even know they have a catching cooordinator.
Praying for Geno. I have run into him a few times over the years, and he seems to be a nice guy. Lets hope for a speedy recovery.
It seems like all the peripherals of Old Yankee Stadium, the Clubhouse men, the announcer are experiencing a changing of the guard even as the walls of old Yankee Stadium come tumbling down
Get well soon Gino.
I meant Geno.
God bless Gene Monahan for all he’s done for our Yankees, and God continue to bless him as he fights this illness. If prayers and good wishes can heal, I guarantee you he’ll be back with us soon, hale and hearty.
Nick in SF……Like Rutgers plus 11 at home vs. Georgetown today…….Does anybody know when the first televised Yankee exhibition game will be aired ????
Get Well Geno !!!

==================
No need to jump all over the poor guy. I’m sure that was the first thought that crossed everyone’s mind when reading this blog entry. We don’t need to expound on it beyond that out of respect for Mr. Monahan but we also do need to accept the world we live in is a public one and once you work for a public organization such as The Yankees that you do sacrifice your right to some degree of privacy.
ie: there is no real harm in someone asking.
Best of luck Gene. May you be in as good a hands as the Yankee players have over these many years.
Wed. March 3rd.

US Women’s Hockey Team is looking Golden….Outstanding team….
Because I don’t care what some scrub drinks. I can be better than some scrub by going to the gym 3 days a week. I want to do what Tiger Woods does (No sex jokes please) because he is the greatest golfer of all time.
To me, Gino is like Bob Sheppard.
You still can love the Yankees but, its not the same without these two men at the ballpark.
Prayers and best wishes for a speedy recovery.
My guess. The word people don’t like to say out loud…
I agree SJ. Best of luck to Mr. Monahan for a full and speedy recovery.
I think we take people like Bob Sheppard and Gene Monahan too much for granted because they’re not “on the field” so to speak.
Both have been very important pieces in NYY history and should be thenked for their contributions.
wishing him a speedy recovery. if it is cancer, hopefully the can remove it surgically. get well Gene
Get well soon mean Gene!
Why do Yankee fans have such a hard time understanding that people age and can not work forever? Some people still think Bob Sheppard is coming back.
Thoughts and prayers are with Gene and his family through the days ahead – hope to see him back with the team soon…
Many blessings to Gene and his family, and many many thanks for keeping the Yankees in tip top shape for so many years. Hope you pull through this one.
curious, is anyone else in the New York State Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame ?
