After further review …

Posted by: - Posted in Misc on Feb 15, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

We have decided to pull back on the threaded comments. It was a good idea in theory, but as many of you pointed out, it hasn’t worked very well practically. The biggest deal breaker is how badly it breaks our iphone interface when there are 3 or 4 replies to a comment. And I think posters raised some very good points about how the threads will look during game nights. The comment boxes really end up overwhelming the interface when there are too many replies. So it’s something that we tried and it didn’t quite work. I know some people liked it and it is something we can always revisit if we can figure out a better way to do it. We appreciate all your feedback.

Don’t forget, you can check out a replay of today’s video chat right here:

Whew…It was just a bad dream.

Now back to our regularly scheduled program.

  6. Jerkface February 15th, 2010 at 1:15 pm

In the future I think threaded comments can work if:

    - Threads only run 3 replies deep
    - Threads are bumped to the ‘bottom’ when replied to

I don’t know if this is feasible, but if that can be implemented it’d be good.

I wonder what it did to it when Nick decided to play the cube game on it? BTW, i won by getting the last pinstripe in.

I don’t see today’s chat in the on demand section…

  15. Pat M. February 15th, 2010 at 1:34 pm

Jerkface makes a good call on the concept of bumping the recent posts as they appear on the thread…The reply option was good if the respones didn’t get lost …..I’m cool with status quo actually

  16. pat February 15th, 2010 at 1:35 pm

    Thanks Jeff

Love that you guys care about trying to make it better but are willing to roll with the punches when it doesn’t work out.

  19. Peter R February 15th, 2010 at 1:38 pm

Thanks for trying. Just wasn’t working out. I personally cant wait for persistent names. Any chance we can get linked up to the Discuss network or OpenID…something like that?

Also I cant find the chat on the On Demand listing. Any idea how long till it is processed and added up there?

    Thanks a lot.

Valiant effort, Jeff, just doesn’t make much practical sense in this ‘community.’

I fear for Phil Hughes. :(

  27. Jeff Marx February 15th, 2010 at 1:51 pm

  28. Betsy - Romine wasn't built in a day February 15th, 2010 at 1:57 pm

    That’s good news.

I’m sure I didn’t express this in my annoyance over the new function, but I did appreciate that you and your fellow IT people tried something new because you wanted to make this blog better. It just didn’t work, practically speaking. Thanks for trying, Jeff!

  29. Dave F February 15th, 2010 at 1:57 pm

Jeff, thanks much for trying. It might be a good idea to put your email on the main page so people can contact you directly with feedback.

  30. Betsy - Romine wasn't built in a day February 15th, 2010 at 1:59 pm

Nick, don’t fear for Phil. He’s tougher than you or Damon give him credit for. He’s lived through the Santana trade talks and through most Yankee fans thinking he’s a bust. Now he has to deal with Joba threatening him, lol. He’ll be fine…

  31. CountryClub February 15th, 2010 at 2:04 pm

Too bad. But since it’s a systems issue, there’s not much for the pro reply button crowd to complain about. Thanks for trying.

    I fear for Phil Hughes.”

Nest or no nest…the baby birds must be protected!

  33. Nick in SF February 15th, 2010 at 2:09 pm

Damon was appealing to Hughes’ inner toughness. If Johnny didn’t think/hope that Phil could handle the tough love, he wouldn’t have bothered.

    I’m glad Johnny was right.

  34. Betsy - Romine wasn't built in a day February 15th, 2010 at 2:13 pm

LOL Nick, but Damon obviously thought Joba needed more tender loving care since he didn’t call him out. Damon could be a psychiatrist in his next life..

I didn’t like the personal shots/biases he had about certain players but he was great in that regard…photo updates every few hours during Spring Training practices and games….I hope that continues w/ the new cast that has been doing a great job

  39. Pat M. February 15th, 2010 at 2:26 pm

The most recent pictures on the demolition of Yankee Stadium are like little darts in my heart…..Painful

  40. pat February 15th, 2010 at 2:35 pm

    “we need news.”

Hughes and Chamberlain threw bullpens and AJ showed up and played catch.

Eiland pitched BP to Jeter, Granderson and Gardner. CG and BG worked on over the shoulder drills and bunting.

Granderson said he spoke with Girardi and told him he’s okay if he wanted to use him in LF or CF.

    Can’t help with the pictures.

  41. stanzy February 15th, 2010 at 2:38 pm

Continue to allow “reply to this comment” and only display comments in threads if the user chooses to view them that way (and disable that option on iPhone/mobile browsers). That way any uesr who really likes threaded comments can view them that way, or if a user, like me, who doesn’t like it, happens to want to view all comments in a particular thread, he can, temporarily.

  42. m February 15th, 2010 at 2:41 pm

    pat,

Saw you “tweeting” here about who’s doing what at the minor league complex. Are you there? Sounds like it!

  43. wsr February 15th, 2010 at 2:41 pm

stanzy, the problem is when responding to threaded comments, you don’t have to reference who/what you’re responding to. if someone opts not to have comments threaded, those threaded posts won’t make any sense without context

  44. Patrick February 15th, 2010 at 2:44 pm

Thanks Spider, now go get me that Crown Royal.

  45. steveoh February 15th, 2010 at 2:46 pm

pat, are you there?! Make sure to let me know if there’s a Robinson Cano sighting :)

  47. pat February 15th, 2010 at 2:57 pm

    m

My husband and son are in Tampa and went this morning but not open to the public today. Security said they would let them in tomorrow to watch but couldn’t today.

They gave me play by play on what players showed up and what cars they were driving but the baseball info came from Bryan Hoch’s tweets.

The Joba info I left you earlier was from what they could see from a distance.

  48. stanzy February 15th, 2010 at 3:00 pm

wsr – That’s the way it is without threading, anyway, no? Some posters are in the habit of indicating which comment they’re responding to, some aren’t. But if the threaded view is an option, and you want to know to whom/what someone is responding, switch to threaded view to see the context. Or, if someone uses the “reply to” link, the software can automatically copy the poster name, timestamp, and even a bit of the text of the comment being replied to into the reply.

Or better still, in non threaded view, comments that were left using “reply to” can automatically display with the commenter name, timestamp, bit of text to which they refer.

    It’s all about options.

  49. m February 15th, 2010 at 3:00 pm

    pat,

Really? Your husband must really love you. lol.

Thanks for passing on the info.

I’m sure the beat writers that are there will regurgitate the same info in time.

  50. m February 15th, 2010 at 3:04 pm

CG and BG worked on over the shoulder drills and bunting.
    ===========================================

    Workout partners?

I’m assuming that CG is Granderson? He needs a longer nickname like GGBG has. Guess we have to do it since PeteAbe’s not here anymore. :(

    What could GGCG stand for?

  51. 86w183 February 15th, 2010 at 3:06 pm

One thing I wish we had (and maybe we do, I’m low tech) is the ability to directly message one another if we want to take our little debate off site. There have been times when I have dropped a one-on-one joust because I was concerned it was rude to others who were reading.

    Is that of any interest?

Johnny Damon is sure having a hard time deciding among all those lucrative offers he supposedly has. Maybe the mystery team is the Jamaican Bobsled Team?

  52. randy l. February 15th, 2010 at 3:13 pm

    pat,

    thanks for the info.

Humors me is more like it.

If not for our son being there, he would have been on the golf course instead of watching baseball players arrive at the field.

I’d still like to see a correction button. I think that it would require registration so only the original poster could make the corrections. This would a huge addition for illiterates like Randy, who’s a pretty nice guy (snicker), just not the sharpest knife in the drawer. Hope he knows when to get inside out of the rain.

  66. Camilo Gerardo February 15th, 2010 at 4:24 pm

    IT!!!

i like threaded. Hate navigating the off-topic convo, and i don’t use ‘hate’ much. RAB doesn’t make their theaded boxes smaller after teh fourth or fifth comment. food for thought

  67. Arno February 15th, 2010 at 4:25 pm

I think a semi-threaded, voted comment system similar to Engadget (Jeff will know what I’m talking about) would work well on this site.

  68. GreenBeret7 February 15th, 2010 at 4:27 pm
