Looking for more of the same

Positions players filtered in and out of the Yankees clubhouse this morning. Their first official workout begins tomorrow, but most seemed to be getting a few swings in the cage after taking their morning physicals.

“You’re always kind of looking for something else and trying to figure out what we did wrong, what we can improve on, what we can change to make it all the way every spring training,” Mark Teixeira said. “For us I think it’s, let’s just keep doing what we’re doing. That was kind of our motto all last year during the playoffs.”

Derek Jeter is meeting with the media on Wednesday, and Alex Rodriguez is talking on Thursday. Other than those two, I can’t think of anyone I didn’t see in the clubhouse this morning.

Robinson Cano said he wants to be better in RBI situations. Jamie Hoffmann said he’s excited to get an opportunity with a team like the Yankees. Nick Swisher just seemed happy to be in a clubhouse full of baseball players again

“We feel like we’re just as capable of defending our championship as we were winning it last year,” Teixeira said. “We have a great team. The core group of guys are back, and hopefully we get a little bit better this year.”

Here’s the Teixeira audio.

“Do you feel bad for Tiger Woods? Of course not. But perhaps he has a true addiction and we don’t know what it’s like.”

While you make an excellent point with the above comment, you fail to realize that no matter how much money a person’s got, that does not stop them from having problems (i.e. mental).

Sure, he is in a better position to treat the illness, but why should he have that held against him?

As for the Rangers being upset with him, I am sure there is at least one member of the organization that is unfortunately like Irabu’s son, but organizations generally realize that the health and well-being of people is more important.

  2. Crawdaddy February 23rd, 2010 at 10:38 am

I pity anybody that has a mental illness that’s causing them to not enjoy life whether they’re rich or poor.

I understand Jeter meeting the media for the annual State of the Clubhouse address but why does the media want to meet with Alex this year?

“I understand Jeter meeting the media for the annual State of the Clubhouse address but why does the media want to meet with Alex this year?”

    Because he’s Arod!

SJ, Craw thanks! That’s a shame – I guess everything in this culture is oriented towards youth. Writers like Curry have a lot to offer; unlike in other professions, talent just doesn’t disappear with age.

Doreen, I don’t like the way Damon handled his exit, either, but at this point he’s old news. The Yankees are an excellent team with or without him and now he’s no different than any other player who is no longer (or never played for) the Yankees.

Cause they want to know if “Quiet and Reserved” Alex showed up to ST or if its “Foot in the Mouth” Alex.

Kind of like the groundhog seeing its shadow. They need to know how much they can rely on Alex being a good story source this year

Nice to see the team all back together…….they have a chance to do something special by repeating and I think they all know it. I do not believe this team will get complacent like championship teams often do. All the players have to do is remember what it felt like to go home at the end of the season. I remember someone saying (was it Pat Riley or Buck Showalter?) that it hurt more to lose than it felt good to win.

  11. Doreen February 23rd, 2010 at 10:52 am

    Chip -

I don’t pity either one. Pity has such a condescending connotation.

I already said, in my opinion, the Rangers will do what they have to do, but it is no reflection of whether or not they support Greene otherwise. If they see no light at the end of the tunnel, they probably will seek to void the contract, but has that been done by any team? I don’t recall, honestly, and it seems like a last resort action. If they knew of his condition going in, and didn’t do anything about it when writing the contract, I would think they took that risk. But (a) I’m not a lawyer, and (b) I have no idea what his contract says. So, understand this is just my opinion.

Irabu’s Son’s comments came across has very harsh toward a fellow human being, and biased simply because this particular human has been fortunate enough to live his dream. His “insisting” the guy should show up to play was just unbelievable to me. That is what I reacted to.

  12. Betsy - Romine wasn't built in a day February 23rd, 2010 at 10:53 am

Erica, what exactly would you want me to do? Build a shrine to Damon? I loved him while he was here, but he chose not to return (no matter what you say, Cash tried) – that’s on him. Now it’s a new season and he’s not on the team. Sorry, but it’s time to talk Yankee baseball.

Nice song!!! I am at the client today, so I have the Sirius Love Song station playing online instead of my iPod. Sadly, no Sesame Street gets played on this station.

I could go for a cookie myself.

For what it’s worth, the public details imply that he’ll get $500K no matter what:

Erica, you’ve implied several times that Cash didn’t try hard enough. Whatever, I’m not going to argue with you.

You are reading way too much into it. Damon is not on the team any longer. When I say he’s no different than a player who’s never been on the Yankees, I mean that he’s not on the team and so I will not be focused on him. If you think I don’t like him or don’t respect what he did during his time here, that’s your issue.

Thats not what you said the first time. You said, I claim he didn’t try. I know he tried. Not enough for my liking. My liking would have resulted in a signed Johnny Damon. The details of what went wrong- honestly, I don’t know what the truth is and I don’t care. It didn’t go the way I wanted it to. That is all I know. And I blame every person involved. Not just Brian Cashman.

Boone was both a hero and a goat that postseason. We all remember his homer to win the pennant, but how many also remember his huge strikeout with the bases loaded and 1 out in the 11th inning of game 4 of the WS against Braden Looper. Yanks did not score that inning, and in the bottom of the inning, Jeff Weaver gave up game winning HR to Alex Gonzalez to lose game 4 and turn that series around. Had he delivered there, Rivera would have come in to close out game 4 and give the Yanks a 3-1 lead in the series.

“Robinson Cano said he wants to be better in RBI situations.”

Very good to hear is aware of that right off the bat and wants to improve in that area.

If he had even been mediocre with men on base he would have put up 25 HR and 100 RBI’s.

He didn’t even have to had excelled at it and would have reached that total.

I personally feel that Cano and Granderson will both reach or be around 30 HR’s and 90+ RBI’s this coming season.

also lets not dump all the blame on boone for striking out with 1 out – john flahtery made the 3rd out that inning with the bases loaded…

Welcome to “As The Lohud Turns”:

Once again, we learn of Chip’s need to behave like a jerk because of a mental and physical need to be slapped around the ears by SJ.

We now see that Erin suffers from multiple fixation complex. She stalks Robbie Cano constantly, to the point that she flew to Miami to mug an acquaintance and steal a ticket to Tampa, just to sit next to Cano. The next morning, she masquerades as the team doctor to give Robbie his physical.

She returns to NY to confront Erica. Erin is extremely jealous of Erica for having a Sesame Street Snow Globe. She hatches a plan to steal the globe for her own.

Erica has her own Sesame Street infatuations and is using it to launch a hostile takeover of the firm she works for by driving everybody crazy with the sound of Bert And Ernie singing “Rubber Ducky” 400 times a day.

Erica has her own Sesame Street infatuations and is using it to launch a hostile takeover of the firm she works for by driving everybody crazy with the sound of Bert And Ernie singing “Rubber Ducky” 400 times a day.

    **************

GB7- You are a GENIUS!!!!! I should do that tonight!!! But instead of Ernie singing, I will stand and do it myself!!! (There was an e-mail sent recently telling people to stop singing out loud to their iPods. LOL)

Okay seriously, that was hilarious. Wonderful e-mail. Can’t wait to see what happens tomorrow!

True story – I almost “drowned” in the balls at Sesame Place when I was 5. My dad had to jump in and save me.

    *********

I once saw a morbidly obese woman get stuck. They had to clear out the ball pit to rescue her.

Best story belongs to my dad-

He was flying down a waterslide at full speed. Everything was fine until he discovered another large woman was stuck and wedged on the slide. Well, they collided and he unstuck her.

“I personally feel that Cano and Granderson will both reach or be around 30 HR’s and 90+ RBI’s this coming season.”

Think about that statement–we’re talking about the Yankees 2B and CF(?), both of whom are under 30, are signed to reasonable contracts, and will presumably bat in the lower half of the order. That’s pretty impressive isn’t it? This duo has so much potential that it’s not difficult imagining either competing for an MVP award. Cashman really doesn’t get enough credit for the way he has overhauled this team over the past few seasons.

Saw a clip of Damon talking yesterday. Looked like a sitdown interview rather than the presser. But he was talking about the negotiations. I think some things are better left unsaid.

Are the NY papers talking (trashing) Damon this a.m.? I read a little of him talking about how eye-opening it was when the richest team in baseball tells you they can’t give you what you want. He still doesn’t get it. It’s that they didn’t want to give him what he wanted.

The first HGH testing victim. It’s not clear what kind of test it is, but it has to be blood, right? Doping agency saying that it’s false that HGH is indectable. I think this will eventually trickle down to baseball. Some time after 2012?

    +++++++++++++++

Absolutely, when you consider Granderson hit 30 HR and 71 RBI’s, in a down season and in a mediocre Detroit Lineup where he was hitting leadoff

Cano got to 25 HR and 85 RBI’s while hitting awful with men in scoring position

More ammo is the fact that Granderson is so much better away from Comerica his whole career.

    2006 Home – .249 AVG, .326 OBP, .389 SLG, .715 OPS, 7 HR, 33 RBI
    2006 Away – .271 AVG, .343 OBP, .485 SLG, .828 OPS, 12 HR, 35 RBI

    2007 Home – .286 AVG, .351 OBP, .512 SLG, .863 OPS, 10 HR, 36 RBI
    2007 Away – .318 AVG, .370 OBP, .592 SLG, .962 OPS, 13 HR, 38 RBI

    2008 Home – .277 AVG, .361 OBP, .493 SLG, .854 OPS, 11 HR, 35 RBI
    2008 Away – .283 AVG, .368 OBP, .495 SLG, .863 OPS, 11 HR, 31 RBI

    2009 Home – .230 AVG, .307 OBP, .388 SLG, .695 OPS, 10 HR, 34 RBI
    2009 Away – .267 AVG, .345 OBP, .516 SLG, .861 OPS, 20 HR, 37 RBI

His AVG, OBP, SLG, OPS are all better away from Comerica in his career. That is not a coincidence for his entire career that he is a better player away from that park.

Even in his monster 2007 season when he had lines of .302 AVG, .361 OBP, .552 SLG, .913 OPS, 122 Runs, 185 H, 23 HR, 38 doubles, 23 triples, 26 steals he was still better Away than at Home

    Home – .286 AVG, .351 OBP, .512 SLG, .863 OPS
    Away – .318 AVG, .370 OBP, .592 SLG, .962 OPS

Think about it Cano had 25 HR and 85 RBI’s while hitting

    Runners on – .255 AVG, .288 OBP, .415 SLG, .703 OPS (294 at bats)

    Scoring Position – .207 AVG, .242 OBP, .332 SLG, .574 OPS (184 at bats)

    Bases Loaded – .259 AVG, .258 OBP, .407 SLG, .665 OPS

    Scoring Position and 2 Outs – .204 AVG, .250 OBP, .327 SLG, .577 OPS

If he is half decent in those situations next season he will hit 90=100 RBI’s and his power continues to increase.

AT 27 and 29 these two guys are going to have terrific years in pinstripes, they have so much room to improve and keep getting better.

Rob – Who would you place as your fifth starter on the Yankees. Seems like Hughes is the favorite and Joba destined to replace Mo. Excited about the baseball season as it seems so long since celebrating the world series. But this fifth starter issue concerns me a bit.

    Rob Neyer (12:29 PM)

Well, every team has a question mark at No. 5, and I would suggest that the Yankees are fortunate to have two candidates so fine.

It’s a job I think should go to a former ballplayer but it’s possible that the YES people are just tired of dealing with free-thinking rabble rousers. Like Cone and Justice.

Personally I prefer a straight shooter than a corporate yes man.

Nothing against Jack Curry because he’s good and should be a familiar face even to those who may not know him by name. But YES doesn’t need any more fluff.

    Chip,

By saying I do not feel bad for the guy because he has money to fall back on unlike many others with similar problems, all your saying is that I do not feel bad for the guy because he has money.

The only thing that separates a poor person with a mental disorder and a rich person with a mental disorder is money. You can apply that across the board to any issue and at the end of the day you end up just saying if you have money no one should feel sorry for you or show compassion for your struggles. No matter how much money he throws at his recovery he may never overcome his problem.

Yes, Green has access to better resources, but anyone feeling sympathy for the guy should have nothing to do with the situation of another person.

No matter how much money he has, the guy has a serious problem. It is as simple as that.

“Do you feel bad for Tiger Woods? Of course not. But perhaps he has a true addiction and we don’t know what it’s like.”

    —————————–

Tiger Woods’ situation has nothing to do with Kahlil Green. Tiger Woods subjected his wife and children to great heartache and betrayal. His wife and kids had no say in the matter because they did not enter into the situation knowing about Woods’ addiction. If Woods had the addiction he should never have gotten married or had kids. He is a scumbag and a liar. Not because I feel no sympathy for him if he indeed has an addiction, but because he subjected people to it when there was absolutely no reason to.

On the other hand, the Rangers knew full well the situation they were entering into. They voluntarily made the decision and took the risk associated with it.

Well per Baseball America the Red Sox have 4 players in MLB top 100:

21 Ryan Westmoreland, of, Red Sox
24 Casey Kelly, rhp, Red Sox
75 Josh Reddick, of, Red Sox
87 Lars Anderson, 1b, Red Sox

Add to that MLB.com’s 3 in Top 50:

27 Ryan Westmoreland, of, Red Sox
28 Casey Kelly, rhp, Red Sox
45 Jose Iglesias, SS, Red Sox

Then that would be 5 guys in someone’s top 100. The Yanks have 2 in Top 100 & 1 in MLB.com’s Top 50.

This doesn’t seem right to me, especially since they are discussing A-League ball players as stars. I would have figured 1 or 2 of these guys would have been in Top 100 along with Montero & Romine.

    Manuel Banuelos
    Jairo Heredia
    Slade Heathcott
    D.J. Mitchell
    Kelvin De Leon
    Jorge Vazquez

The Yankees in a way did have 4 guys in the Top 100. Austin Jackson and Arodys Vizcaino. If the Red Sox had made any trades this offseason they would be in the same situation.

Also, Jorge Vazquez is not a big prospect.

Kelly, Westmoreland, and Iglesias just have higher upside than any of our non Montero guys. Reddick is a useful OF that can be plus defense at any of the 3 OF positions. Thats the way it is. Even Hall of Famer Peter Gammons says so.

Grandersons speed belongs in the 2 hole and Johnson will hit for more power in our line up. Mixing the Lefties and Righties has always been a Yankee trademark.

    Jeter
    Granderson
    Tex
    Arod
    Johnson
    Posada
    Cano
    Swisher
    Gardner

When Posada sits Cano and Swisher slide up but try not to sit Posada against a lefty whenever possible.

  103. MTU February 23rd, 2010 at 2:07 pm

It’s been mentioned that the Yankees do not want to take away Cano’s aggressiveness at the plate. It is at the same his strength and his weakness.

It’s his strength because he seems to do better when he swings early in the count (I think) in terms of BA.

It’s his weakness because it doesn’t allow him to hit situationally. To do that you must look for a certain pitch to drive in a particular way, and it may not come early in the count(i.e. patience).

For me, Matsui was a master of this. He would seem to tailor his hitting approach to the situation at hand. I thought he was remarkably good at it.

To be a better hitter with men on base I personally think that’s a part of what it will take for Cano.

Do I think it will happen ?

    No.

Cano’s pure athleticism makes it possible for him to make contact at a very high rate but it doesn’t seem to allow him to come to the plate with a specific situational hitting plan which may require patience, and therein lies the paradox for me.

How do you balance Cano’s aggressiveness with a perceived need to hit situationally in order to drive in more runs ?

Or is what am saying a false “dichotomy”, worse yet not even a valid POV ?
