They know what’s coming

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Feb 25, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

The spring’s first live batting practice sessions are over. Pitchers basically threw five pitches to each hitter, then moved to the next guy.

“If they hit it, they hit it,” Dave Robertson said. “They know what’s coming.”

Curtis Granderson saw a total of 10 pitches from Alfredo Aceves and didn’t swing at a single one. The hardest hit ball I saw was by P.J. Pilittere, up the middle off Robertson.

Pitchers mixed fastballs and breaking balls, but generally announced the pitch and the location before throwing.

Maybe Granderson is adjusting to his new contact lenses.

  2. Tony February 25th, 2010 at 1:14 pm

Maybe Granderson didn’t want to strike out

  3. Erin February 25th, 2010 at 1:14 pm

ed_price MLB Network will show 78 spring games, featuring 45 live games and all 30 clubs at least three times. about 1 minute ago

Maybe Ace could not get the ball over the plate. Trade him now while his value is still high!!!

  5. Rich in NJ February 25th, 2010 at 1:18 pm

Given Aceves’s HR/9 was 1.1 last season, he should be the perfect batting practice pitcher.

  6. Betsy - Romine wasn't built in a day February 25th, 2010 at 1:18 pm

Maybe Granderson just wanted to get his batting eye in order and didn’t want to swing at bad pitches that he didn’t like.

  7. five iron from fenway February 25th, 2010 at 1:20 pm

Granderson is clearly a slacker – not wanting to break a sweat in Practice… Practice!

  8. Phil the Thrill February 25th, 2010 at 1:20 pm

When is PJ gonna hang em up and start coaching/managing in the system?

  9. Tripps78 February 25th, 2010 at 1:20 pm

    Tony,

I know when Granderson didn’t strike out. When he rocked that late game triple off Mussina in Game 2 of 2006 ALDS and changed the momentum in that series.

  10. S.o.S. February 25th, 2010 at 1:21 pm

Fellas. Its quite simple. Granderson wanted to work on his on base percentage.

  11. S.o.S. February 25th, 2010 at 1:24 pm

I think they should get that young lefty that allowed 4 straight bombs to boston. They can have him pitch to Monstero and also to anyone that wants a confidence booster.

  12. Rich in NJ February 25th, 2010 at 1:29 pm

As an aside, I think it’s great that the Yankees had Granderson’s vision checked and found a potentially correctable problem.

  13. blake February 25th, 2010 at 1:30 pm

The first few days hitters are just concerned with getting their eyes used to tracking live pitching again. Its more about that than the results at this point. Granderson got to track 10 pitches…that’s all he’s after right now.

  14. S.o.S. February 25th, 2010 at 1:33 pm

So if today is opposite day. Does that mean Gardner will be swinging at everything rather than resting the bat on his shoulders?

“I know when Granderson didn’t strike out. When he rocked that late game triple off Mussina in Game 2 of 2006 ALDS and changed the momentum in that series.”

I remember that… I think Matsui was in Left and Damon in Center.. not exactly the defense you want out there..

He was doing his Manny impression from Manny’s last AB as a Red Sox against the Yanks

“So if today is opposite day. Does that mean Gardner will be swinging at everything rather than resting the bat on his shoulders?”

It might…otoh, I would rather have a batter take too many pitches than hack at bad ones, unless he has Canoesque contact skills.

  18. upstate kate February 25th, 2010 at 1:37 pm

ahhhh Blake, you are far too rational :)

  19. Don't Hassle the Hoff February 25th, 2010 at 1:38 pm

Any word on who is getting DFA’d for park.. Is edwar basically waiting for Park’s Jet Lag to wear off before going to the wire?

  20. Doreen February 25th, 2010 at 1:43 pm

    What’s wrong with Curtis’ vision?

    Doreen,

Nothing’s wrong. I would kill for 20/30 vision.

  24. Rich in NJ February 25th, 2010 at 1:52 pm

But can you lay off the breaking ball down and away, m?

  25. rover February 25th, 2010 at 1:55 pm

CG practicing drawing a base to be used exclusively against lefties

Matsui didn’t even know where the ball was hit… That series still ticks me off… Joe T could not wait to get home that fall

  27. Doreen February 25th, 2010 at 2:00 pm

    Thanks, Rich in NJ.

Apparently, I’m not allowed by the filter to say that I’ve been wearing “contactless corrective lenses” since 3rd grade!

    Anyway, I’d kill for 20/30, too! :)

  28. champ809 February 25th, 2010 at 2:00 pm

    Phil

I’m hoping the Yanks pair PJ up with either Murphy or Romine(Murphy prob needs it more) this season to teach them the finer points of receiving and game calling.

Murphy needs it more but I’m not sure PJ would appreciate the Yanks sending him down to Charleston at this point in his career.

“Apparently, I’m not allowed by the filter to say that I’ve been wearing “contactless corrective lenses” since 3rd grade!”

And of course if one were to were such lenses on their ass, it’s not an issue.

I know… it’s a recycled joke. But if I keep using it maybe they’ll correct the problem.

    I hear you!! Me too!!!

I always had perfect vision until my first busy season. After the first 3 months of 12 hour days at a laptop, I needed corrective lenses. My eyes have deteriorated every year for my last 8 busy seasons.

I worry I will be legally blind by the time I make partner (if I ever want to)

ARod on winning his first championship: “It becomes an addition.”

ARod: “It’s definitely a much different day” than last year’s press conference, but the steroids presser “was a very important day.”

Apparently, you’re allowed to assume on this blog, and make an ass of yourself while wearing “contactless corrective lenses” on said ass.

    Erica -

Ugly frames from 3rd grade through age 19. You have no idea what was out there to choose from in the late 60s and 70s. Not to mention the round styled frames somewhere around the time I was 13 or so. My first paycheck went straight toward contact lenses and I’ve worn them non-stop until the last year or so. Dry eye. So I have to limit the wearing. Omega 3 helps, but since most days I have no one to impress, I wear frames most of the time. I still hate them, no matter how stylish they are. Feels like I’m wearing a mask.

ARod on winning his first World Series: “It wasn’t a monkey, it was a humongous gorilla on my back.”

Yet another supporter of increased habeas corpus opportunities for death row inmates? I would have thought you were a law and order guy.

  40. GreenBeret7 February 25th, 2010 at 2:21 pm

Yeah, but, the death penalty for jay walking seems a little extreme.

I don’t like the weight of them. And I get paranoid that if I wear them people will think I am just another dorky accountant.

I wear my contacts all of the time. I just keep the gla-ses for emergencies. I shouldn’t wear the contacts as much as I do, but I really do not like the alternative
