sorry Doreen, I wasn’t quick enough.
I would have only done the home game, and would only have had a few correct…oh well, I will try again next time :)

    upstate kate -

Just gotta laugh! ST is an entirely different animal.

I had suggested submitted lineups the night before, but the vibe here is very different at night…

    :)

Maybe I have a thing for being able to pick the winner? Yesterday I went to see both Crazy Heart and Blind Sides!

    :)

When Baseball Prospectus picked the Yankees to finish third maybe they were playing off the astrologer (psychic?) prediction that Derek Jeter is going to have the worst season of his career. I believe that any one player can have a really bad season and the rest of the team can pick it up. Of course I would like to think that the prediction is far off the money!

I really wish that Sandra Bullock had thought to mention the catalyst for the movie – Michael Oher – in her congratulations speech. (I’m watching the repeat of E’s Live from the Red Carpet. Sorry for the Oscar’s talk).

This is my final Oscar comment. I think Sarah Jessica Parker looked ridiculous.

    GO YANKEES!!!

LOL-good timing. I loved Crazy Heart-I was really happy that Jeff Bridges won. Still haven’t seen The Blind Side. I love Sandra Bullock though, and I was really happy for her.

Erin, I think you will absolutely love the Blind Side. The fact that it’s based on a true story really blew me away. I see it as a love story, if you will.

  11. christina March 8th, 2010 at 8:54 am

Bummer that Jeter and Arod are going to Bradenton. Not that they sign anyhow…those two have been brutal to the fans lately. Side note: I saw Damon yesterday in Dunedin and had a nice conversation with hm for a few minutes. He was very adament the yanks didn’t want him..and hushed when I said 2 years 14….nice giy though especially to the fans

  21. Frank March 8th, 2010 at 9:19 am

    “blake
    March 8th, 2010 at 8:27 am

Frank, the clear leader is Mitre based on performance but judging from Cashman’s quotes I think its a very very slim chance he actually gets the job. I think Hughes and Joba would both have to be really bad or get injured for that to happen. I do think Mitre could be a valuable guy this year either as a spot starter or in a trade.”

Agree on all counts, ‘cept that I think he has pretty minimal trade value. Good spring aside, he’s a 29 year old pitcher with ZERO major league success. He’s pitched well so far this month, but I just don’t see the numbers game working for him. Might be pitches well enough for the Yankees to get some minor league roster guys for him rather than having to stone cold release him and get nada.

  22. blake March 8th, 2010 at 9:20 am

Damon was willing to take a paycut but not from his old team. Its a pretty common stance amongst free agents. If Damon had wanted to stay bad enough he would have bucked that trend and stayed. The Yankees made two offers, he didn’t take them so both parties move on. I like Damon and hopefully Yankee fans will remember him for the positives he did while with them.

Also, its good to see Javy take the mound today, he’s gonna be hugely important this year IMO.

  23. blake March 8th, 2010 at 9:23 am

    Frank,
I agree. I think if someone gets moved it will most likely be Gaudin because he makes more money and he has more trade value. Mitre is probably with the Yankees for the long haul this year and if he keeps pitching well could provide good depth and injury insurance.

  24. trisha - OPPC member who sees, hears, and knows all. 28 is on its way!!!!! March 8th, 2010 at 9:25 am

Not ever minding being the outlier I still say that if Mitre continues pitching the way he has been, he makes the Yankees. We all know that the Yankees always go into the season with more than 5 starters – or at least they attempt to.

I think Phil would have to be pretty bad not to be the 5th starter – or same with Joba. But they can both lose out to one of the other three contenders.

  25. MTU March 8th, 2010 at 9:26 am

    Blake-

If someone needs to be traded I personally would prefer it be Mitre rather than Gaudin.

But I see your point about trade value.

  26. Frank March 8th, 2010 at 9:28 am

    Blake:

I wonder about that. I’d think the Yankees might be more inclined to hold onto Gaudin over Mitre. He’s a couple years younger (turns 27 in two weeks) and offers more flexibility with his ability to pitch out of the pen.

  27. Lori March 8th, 2010 at 9:30 am

Christina – Have a great time – and tell Tino I said hi. He has no idea who I am, but I just adore him. I watched the replay of the ST game last week, knowing that they lost, just to hear him in the broadcast booth!

  28. Chambliss March 8th, 2010 at 9:32 am

I will get ripped for this, but if Mitre is pitching well I would send both Hughes and Joba to AAA to start the season to workout any mechanical and/or mental issues and build confidence with their change up and other off speed pitches.

This competition thing is silly to me. It could lead to one or both of them trying to do too much too soon to land the 5th spot in the rotation.

There are several other guys who can serve as the bridge to Mo: Robertson, Aceves, Loogan, Marte and Gaudin to name a few.

  29. trisha - OPPC member who sees, hears, and knows all. 28 is on its way!!!!! March 8th, 2010 at 9:36 am

Chambliss I agree with you about giving Mitre the job if he outpitches the others. I don’t think you’ll see Joba and Phil sent back down, even if it would be a good idea.

  30. Bodhisattva - Destiny Wears Pinstripes March 8th, 2010 at 9:37 am

I have found the ST broadcasts very wanting.

TIno is a nice, cozy addition, but I think the narrative will suffer greatly throughout the season for not having a pitcher, or even catcher, perspective.

In the games so far, Singleton, whom I usually like, has disappointed – too many stories and too much silliness sailing over what’s happening in the games.

Very little focus on the young players, except for a cursory reference and then it’s back to fun and games.

YES needs to have an analyst in there.

  31. Joe from Long Island March 8th, 2010 at 9:38 am

christina – I am very tempted. I’m going to the game, we’ve got tix in sec 214. Problem is we’re going with friends, so I’d like all 4 of our seats together.

The things we do for friendship lol!

  32. MTU March 8th, 2010 at 9:38 am

    Chambliss-

    several items:

1 Even if the Yankees wanted to do what you suggest (which I doubt) Phil’s last option expires soon, and Joba’s in August I believe.

2 I think it’s reasonable to suppose that the Yankees very much want either Phil or Joba as # 5. IMO there is a clear preference.

IMO either Mitre or Gaudin or both are gone before the start of the season.

  33. JohnC March 8th, 2010 at 9:43 am

Before anyone gets their hopes up about Logan, remember Billy Traber was lights out in ST a couple of years ago, and when the season started he was a disaster.

  34. m March 8th, 2010 at 9:45 am

    Good morning, folks!

I watched Oscars last night, so I stayed off the blog in case there were any spoilers.

I must say, that I’m not a huge Oscar person in the sense that I’ll watch it in its entirety. But I thought last night’s presentation was pretty good. There were a few awkward things like there was a bit totally unrelated to the movie they were previewing. And the lady that chased some guy and ripped the mic out of that poor guys hand and finished his speech was just plain rude.

And, unfortunately, I missed the one acceptance speech I really wanted to see. “Sandy”. And I never, ever watch Baba Wawa’s specials, but I did. Not realizing it would be her last. So that was lucky coincidence.

Needless to say, I never got back on to see the spoilers. Just saw the thread was spoiled. :P

As for Mitre. I’m glad he’s coming back nicely. I do believe that he is better just from the sheer standpoint of being farther removed from TJS. And he could beat out Joba for the #5. But I think it would be difficult for him to beat out Phil. Now, the edge Mitre has is he’s out of options. So, he’ll probably make the big-league roster regardless. And it would be nice to have a groundball pitcher out of the bullpen.

    trisha,

Thanks for that heads up on the E! thing. It’ll probably run ad nauseum today.

  35. blake March 8th, 2010 at 9:45 am

I think ideally they would rather hold on to Gaudin for the reasons mentioned but if they can trade Gaudin for something useful and rid themselves of his salary then I think that be more appealing than the spare parts they would probably get for Mitre.

  36. Bodhisattva - Destiny Wears Pinstripes March 8th, 2010 at 9:48 am

I don’t take seriously for a minute that there’s a private consideration to make Mitre or Gaudin the fifth starter (or even Ace).

They got Vazquez to win games and eat innings, and also it allows them to low leverage Joba or Phil along without much backlash to the bullpen or the team’s 2010 fortunes.

They didn’t have the balls to let them both be in the rotation, preferring the conservative road.

They’re not going to ALSO shut both kids out of the FIFTH spot by turning it over to a journeyman and further stall either’s progress.

Or let’s put it this way – I sure as hell don’t believe it – and if they were to take that course, they would be rudderless, in my estimation.

  37. blake March 8th, 2010 at 9:48 am

Does clooney hate Steve martin and Alec Baldwin or something? I didn’t get the whole thing between them.

That lady running up on stage to talk was just weird. I read this morning that she was a journalist who had worked on the film, but left due to creative differences. It’s kind of funny if you think about. She’s the new Kanye. lol

Sandra’s speech was great, she was very emotional especially towards the end when she thanked her mom. I’m sure somebody’s got it up so you can see it.

  39. MTU March 8th, 2010 at 9:49 am

    m-

I disagree about Mitre making the team.

If you think of the BP possibilities there is not enough room for both Mitre and Gaudin.

And unlike some, I do not see Mitre in the SR ahead of both Phil or Joba.

They are both out of options so IMO 1 of them needs to go.

Personally, I like Gaudin better so I hope mitre is the one who goes.

  40. randy l. March 8th, 2010 at 9:50 am

now why would the yankees waste a developmental spot in the rotation which is what the fifth spot is for a young pitcher on anyone besides hughes or chamberlain?

it seems that would be a major blow to cashman’s emphasis on developing young pitching.

how does a team work in a young starter if it’s not the fifth spot in the rotation?

i don’t see anyone ,but hughes or joba winning the fifth spot unless there’s an injury to someone in the rotation, or to hughes or joba, or unless there is a colossal breakdown in the yankees intent to develop it’s own starters.

mitre, gaudin, etc are spare parts. spare parts are important when something goes wrong, but hopefully nothing will go wrong and they’ll be in the background like they are now.

i do think it’s great that the yankees are 8 deep in starters. they weren’t last year in spring training.

  41. Doreen - 2010 GTLU March 8th, 2010 at 9:50 am

    MTU -

From what I understand, if they sent Phil to AAA directly from spring training (before April 25th-ish), they will be okay. Joba has until August.

    bodhi -

I haven’t really been watching the telecasts closely – they’ve been on in the background, and I’ve put them on from the middle innings (except for the very first game, which was on in its entirety). I would have to agree with you that they’ve been fairly bland, and they haven’t been really good about even identifying the youngsters (if you miss the initial introduction to the plate, you’re lost – thank heavens I printed Chad’s uniform number list and I keep it handy).

I can only hope that once the season starts, the broadcasters will begin calling the games in earnest. Apparently, even YES doesn’t take ST all that seriously :)

  42. Erin March 8th, 2010 at 9:50 am

New Post: A couple of firsts

  43. Frank March 8th, 2010 at 9:51 am

    Blake:

Gaudin can be useful, but he’s on his 7th team since 2003, which probably is no accident. He’s not going to bring much of anything back in trade either.

  44. trisha - OPPC member who sees, hears, and knows all. 28 is on its way!!!!! March 8th, 2010 at 9:52 am

mel, E announced as much – they will be having Oscare stuff ad nauseum today!!! One of my favorite things is to watch the fashion police segment after a big event. I think that will be on tonight. I think Joan Rivers is hysterical!

  45. MTU March 8th, 2010 at 9:52 am

    Doreen-

I am not sure that is correct.

    IMO it requires further clarification.

  46. Doreen - 2010 GTLU March 8th, 2010 at 9:55 am

    randy l -

Do they have room to keep either Mitre or Gaudin? I don’t think they can keep both, so their depth goes down, right? And from what I understand, neither can be kept “in reserve” in AAA since they’re out of options.

So, won’t that wonderful depth be gone once the regular season starts, unless at least one of Mitre/Gaudin is kept on the ML roster?

I think the “loser” of Joba/Hughes needs to go to AAA, the more I think about it. Being less of a reflection of the ability of the loser as it is a need for that pitcher to continue to developing as a starter.

Whatever the Yankees do, they do. I don’t think they’ve given their hand away, though, when discussing all their options and what they intend to do, and I guess they wouldn’t, plus they can’t until they see what everyone does.

If they traded one or both of Gaudin/Mitre – what would they get back?

  47. Doreen - 2010 GTLU March 8th, 2010 at 9:58 am

    MTU -

From what I remember reading, it has to do with major league service time and when it began. Phil was in April of 2007, Joba August of 2007. Once they hit their anniversary dates, I think that’s when that non-binding waiver thing starts. I think, until then, they have that one option left. I think.

But you’re right. It would be great if we could get a clarification of that.

Hey, maybe I’ll try and check it out! :)

  48. randy l. March 8th, 2010 at 10:00 am

“They’re not going to ALSO shut both kids out of the FIFTH spot by turning it over to a journeyman and further stall either’s progress.”

    precisely.

  49. Bodhisattva - Destiny Wears Pinstripes March 8th, 2010 at 10:00 am

    Doreen,

They apparently don’t, and that’s a disservice to the viewers.

The hunger to see the young guys in the system only gets quenched at one time of year for many fans.

Many Yankee fantatics aren’t as fortunate as you and I are, living in such close proximity to the AA team, or GB7 to Charleston, and some of the others here, to SWB.

I know when I talk to some of my senior friends, that don’t use the internet to talk Yankees, are all ears when I tell them I’ve gone to see Montero, or Higgie (in Staten Island), or when I was seeing Hughes in the minors.

Even THEY have an inkling that we have some exciting, potential future Yankees. Look at how happy people are that Chad brings this dimension to this board?

Every other Yankee site on the net has a “prospects thread’ – people have subscriptions to Pinstripes Plus to learn about the guys they haven’t yet seen – even the newspapers, if reluctantly, are starting to do some legwork on these guys.

It’s unconscionable for the YES guys to take such a laissez-faire attitude. They don’t seem to do any homework! Look at Laird – he’s not a ‘toolsy’ kid but he’s clearly a baseball player, heady beyond his years and knows how to take an AB.

Miranda hasn’t had one bad swing up there, Nunez has shown off his range and wheels – and is errant throws – Brackman had no FB but his curve alone was enough to get really excited about – etc.

    WHERE ARE THESE GUYS???

Feed the passion! Educate the fan! :D .

  50. Bodhisattva - Destiny Wears Pinstripes March 8th, 2010 at 10:11 am

I think the “loser” of Joba/Hughes needs to go to AAA, the more I think about it. Being less of a reflection of the ability of the loser as it is a need for that pitcher to continue to developing as a starter.
    =====

    Point.

Leaving one kid inert for 2010 while they chase another championship isn’t looking out for the future. Now that the dye is cast and Javy is here, you still have to find a way to nurture BOTH arms.

  51. randy l. March 8th, 2010 at 10:20 am

    doreen-

i’m counting aceves to add up to 8 starters in the system .

i like gaudin better than mitre based on watching them last year , but you have to be there to know how they are throwing. so there will be a choice made on who to let go by someone watching them pitch.

to tell you the truth, i’m a big picture guy . i don’t care so much about the spots at the end of the team as i do that the top four starters are all healthy and the starting position players are all healthy.

it makes for good blog discussion i suppose, but the decision between gaudin and mitre just doesn’t seem that important .

i’m assuming that long is working right now on granderson hitting lefties better this year. now that’s something that’s important. i wonder what long is doing with him. they never tell you, so you have to figure it out by watching.

long must have started to lay the groundwork for alex changing his hitting approach last spring training( though the hip injury got in the way), but the changes didn’t show up until mid summer.

the most interesting things going on in spring training are often hard to see, but they’re there .

i’m also very interested in hughes, joba, and burnett working on their change ups.

if someone doesn’t start throwing a good change, they need to bring in a special asst to the pitching coach who can teach the change.

  52. KevinP March 8th, 2010 at 11:58 am

Does anyone have any idea what “regulars” will be making the trip for Friday’s game .vs the Nationals? I know Andy is pitching but know we only going to get 4 regulars as per league rules.
