Rivera is the best modern era closer in history (modern era for being the early to mid-90s forward). Can't judge him by what Fingers and Gossage did. That's like saying that Mays and Aaron were better hitters than Cobb or Honus wagner. They hit more homers, but Cobb was a triple Crown winner in his era and Wwagner lead the NL in homers. Or comparing Pettitte to Jack Morris. Nearly identical numbers accomplished in different ways.

What's the difference? They all have two things in common. They were the best of their time at what they did. All are HOFers or will be in Rivera's case.

Disco Stu, I agree. Just because Goose is an ex-Yank doesn't mean I have to agree with even half of what he says.

I dont have a problem with Goose wanting to defend the era he pitched in and making sure that people are mindful that closers were used a lot differently when he pitched.

That is fine ... I grew up in that era and I remember the days when Goose would come in the game in relief of Catfish and record 8-9 outs for the save.

The thing that bothers me about Goose's comments is that he never gives Mo credit for the extended work he has done in the post-season. Mo is used much more like Goose was once October rolls around. Look at the number of games Mo has had to record saves when coming into the game in the 8th inning. You have to be fair ... and that is the one aspect of Goose's argument that he is not completely fair about.

Aceves- "He threw just 36 pitches in the game, then tossed another 16 in the bullpen before cooling down."

4 innings, 3Ks, no BB and 36 pitches. Quite economical.
