Brett Gardner is back in a familiar situation this spring, but the would-be starting outfielder is always up for the challenge of competition.

There were just a few small differences between Andy Pettitte’s “game” yesterday and his previous outing, but the lefty was happy to get his work in. The notebook also has info on two of the fifth-starter candidates pitching in Fort Myers, information on Francisco Cervelli’s situation, an update on Nick Johnson’s back and more.

Split-squad for the Yankees today against the Pirates in Bradenton and the Phillies at The Boss. Keep checking back for updates all day.

Sam, after how many appearances are they predicted to make a decision on the 5th starter? If its in the second to last week then they only will probably gets a couple more turns in I would say.

Anyone think the clear leader in the “competition” to this point actually ends up the 5th starter?

I really hope one of our young pitchers gets the 5th position…and at this point I am hoping it is Phil.

Just a reminder that while GTLU-ST Edition is not very popular, for those who still want to do so, I will accept any lineups posted before the official lineup starting now. :)

Last week, when Mike F interviewed Joe G, Joe said he hoped to have the #5 spot decided by Mar. 25th.

Curious about Miranda. You guys think he will make the team?

Some of you where talking about him playing some outfield. And with Johnson’s injuries he could DH as well

Haha “at The Boss” I like that

    Doreen
is GTLU for the home or away game?

    upstate kate -

Either/or or both. BFARBS submitted two lineups. So, whatever anyone wants to do, just note which game the lineup is for.

Frank, the clear leader is Mitre based on performance but judging from Cashman’s quotes I think its a very very slim chance he actually gets the job. I think Hughes and Joba would both have to be really bad or get injured for that to happen. I do think Mitre could be a valuable guy this year either as a spot starter or in a trade.

They have to be kidding me when they have an outfield of Curtis Granderson(can’t hit lefties or judge fly balls)Brett Gardner(can’t hit at all and is a borderline major leaguer)and Steve Swisher who can’t even make contact against a good pitcher,Is painfully slow and has a rag arm.Two of the top 3 clutch players they did not resign(Damon and Matsui)leaves them highly questionable to repeat.
