“However, all along the way, Alex needed to let the Yankees know who he was seeing and for what. It seems he didn’t let them know about Galea. That’s the problem, and that’s what the “big deal” is in Yankeetown. Another, okay, Alex, what happened THIS time moment. I agree with mel that at some point, the exasperation level within the Yankee organization has to be about at its limit, if not over it. I do not think they would do anything contractually, however.”

    ——————————-

    Very well said Doreen.

This is the point that I was trying to make even if A-Rod did absolutely nothing wrong his name is still linked to an investigation. He is still being called in to testify to the FBI. Do you think anyone’s employer would be thrilled with that? That alone is an “issue.” You would think by know he would be careful enough to cover all his bases. Even if some doctor is prescribing him cold medicine the Yankees should know, especially considering his past.

Anything medical, drug, rehab, etc. related should have been relayed back to the Yankees. If he had let the Yankees know Galea was involved there would be no issue, no speculation, no questions, because the Yankees would have come out and said we okayed him.

Instead, the Yankees have to sit back, wait, and wonder because they had no idea about Galea.

There are plenty of athletes that stay out of the news because they know to cover all their bases no matter what.

  3. Doreen - 2010 GTLU March 9th, 2010 at 9:10 am

And, there are no winners today. Joe Girardi really seems to be taking this ST opportunity to really play with these lineups! Also, getting a good look at the “contestants” for the various positions.

Thanks for playing, guys! We should be in good shape by April 4th!

  4. LGY March 9th, 2010 at 9:13 am

Alex should not be putting his 100% trust in anyone no matter how well his rehab was going or how much he trusts his doctor.

If I love my doctor and he recommends I go to a specialist for something, I at the very least call my insurance company, and google him/her just to make sure.

The Yankees are basically A-Rod’s insurance company. He should be calling them just to make sure, no matter what. Even college athletes know to do this.

  8. Doreen - 2010 GTLU March 9th, 2010 at 9:19 am

    Trisha -

Now that GTLU is done for the day, I can answer your question about Aceves.

Yesterday, I said that I really think Girardi loves Aceves’ versatility and in the long run, I think he will be kept in the same spot as he was last year. I do really think that barring unforeseen circumstances, Phil or Joba gets the 5th rotation spot.

If Aceves gets the 5th spot, I would imagine that one of two things, or both, happened: Ace absolutely dominated and no one came close; Phil and/or Joba really stunk up the joint; or unforeseen unhappy circumstances occurred (you know what I mean and I won’t say the word).

If Ace gets the spot because of Joba/Phil not doing as well as expected, or because he dominated, what I would like to see is whoever did better between Joba/Phil go to the pen with the other going to AAA.

If Joba doesn’t get the 5th spot because his mechanics are off, I would love to see the Yankees send him to AAA (or wherever in the system would be best) to get it right.

If Phil doesn’t get the 5th spot, whatever the reason, I would love to see him get sent to AAA to keep stretched out as a starter, but I wouldn’t have a particular problem if they kept him in the bullpen.

In general, though, I’m not passionate about any of this. In other words, however it works out at the end of spring training is how it works out. But at the end of the day, some day, I would like to see Joba and Phil both in the starting rotation, because that would mean they’re both performing to their potential, as I am aware of it. If it is deemed that Joba has a better skill set for the pen, and they want him to train to be the heir apparent to Mo, as long as he’s pitching well and they’re not just sticking him in there to keep him on the ML roster, that would be fine with me, too. Things change.

Doreen – that’s why Erica said the other day that anyone correctly guessing these ST lineups shoulod be a psychic!

You have to love Joe G. and the way he mixes things up. I think he is such a phenomenal manager. One of the things that always made me think he’d make a good manager was his background in engineering. I think there’s a scientific way of thinking there that really translates into good decision making.

  12. Carl March 9th, 2010 at 9:20 am

  18. trisha - OPPC member who sees, hears, and knows all. 28 is on its way!!!!! March 9th, 2010 at 9:23 am

MTU, thanks for being willing to discuss hypotheticals! You may very well be right that in the end, one or the other earns the position. I have always been high on what Hughes has to offer as a starter. If I were to make a blind bet (I just made that up) I would put my money on Hughes, totally based on what I have seen of both of him and Joba, both starting and in the pen, and what I have seen of both of their “pitching mentalities.”

Because I totally believe that this is wide open it becomes all the more intriguing to me.

You know that the Yankees will go back to camp with back-up starters. I suppose that you could do worse than having Ace as that person, or as one of the people. I agree though that Phil needs to stay stretched out no matter where he goes so keeping him in the pen wouldn’t be the best idea.

Potentially tough decisions on their way. Nobody will convince me (or Cashman or Girardi I would say, lol) that the 5th position is sewn up by anyone right now.

  19. MTU March 9th, 2010 at 9:23 am

    Is it just me.

Or it is absoluely freakin’ amazing hiw many Pitchers suffer these injuries ?

I also said in my post that it is a detail worth noting who knew what and when. Going to Dr. Galea a few months ago really doesn’t send up a red flag. But NOW, of course it doesn’t look good. It seems to me that until the last few weeks, no one even cared who Dr. Galea was.

You are always willing to look at things objectively. You might have a feeling about what will eventually happen but you also are not thrown by the thought that other things could intervene to change the landscape. Life 101.

TERRIBLE news for the Twins. Do you replace Mariano Rivera if he’s out for the season? Neither do you replace a Joe Nathan. I pray for the best result possible for both Nathan and the Twins. I want every team to be as competitive as possible. No fun winning because some team has major injuries going on. There’s probably nothing worse than can happen in terms of a single player and the Twins.

This is the point that I was trying to make even if A-Rod did absolutely nothing wrong his name is still linked to an investigation. He is still being called in to testify to the FBI

    ____

I think he is just being questioned. Not testifying unless something happened since last night.

As for Aceves, right now he looks like the 5th starter if what Girardi and Cash say is true, that the best gets the 5th spot. Start Phil in AAA to build innings and if Joba cannot get his velocity back, he needs to be in the pen.

I am a big joba starts guy but if his magic only translates to the pen for 8th/9th inning, then thats where he should be. IF….. he doesnt get his velocity back.

  31. MTU March 9th, 2010 at 9:30 am

    Doreen-

You have a high probability of being correct.

As I mentioned it was based on a very small sample.

Though the Yankees may be somewhat openminded I don’t think it’s total.

By the time ST is over I am fairly sure that one of the preffered options will have emerged.

However, I do not think CC is just chopped liver. I like what I’ve seen. :)

  32. MTU March 9th, 2010 at 9:33 am

    Trisha-

I agree with your sentiments about Nathan.

The guy has been great ( And i think he is from NY).

Unfortunately, if Nathan needs TJ at his age I fear that it may be career ending.

Just imagine if Mo had to undergo TJ at 36-37 ?

    absolute bummer.

  33. Doreen - 2010 GTLU March 9th, 2010 at 9:34 am

    MTU -

I think CC turned a corner starting last season in Trenton and continuing through to the AFL this winter. I’ve got my fingers crossed for him. It’s possible if one of the other guys ends up being a bust he could get a mid-season call-up.

It would kind of be great if he turns out to be something and they don’t have to go outside the organization next winter. :)

But, that’s my exuberance for a guy I liked watching in Trenton coming through. The “b” side of going to the AAA games.

  39. Doreen - 2010 GTLU March 9th, 2010 at 9:36 am

It is a shame about Nathan.

It is interesting, though, how long it takes from “ouch” to the diagnosis, and how in between the reports vary from how serious it could be to he just needs a few days of rest.

I hope he is able to have a successful TJ and recovery. But is he late 30′s? Not good.

    ——————————

It is not about common sense. It about doing what he and every other baseball player has been told they should be doing on multiple occasions by the union and Selig. Let your team know before taking anything from anyone.

If the Yankees cleared him there is no “issue” because they would have his back in the media so to say. The problem I believe the Yankees have is noy that he saw Galea, but that he did not tell the them about it.

  43. MTU March 9th, 2010 at 9:39 am

    Doreen-

There is a chance he may only need “ligament enhancement”
    rather than full TJ.

That would be the best case scenario for JN I would think.

(Same proceedure Pettitte and Sheets had. Recovery time quicker. prognosis a bit better ?).

    Let’s hope for that. ;)

  44. Betsy -Romine wasn't built in a day March 9th, 2010 at 9:39 am

I don’t care what Cashman says – the only way Phil or Joba aren’t the 5th starter is if both of them have their arms fall off or they are absolutely horrid (then, one of the other 3 have to have the springs of their lives). Even then, it would still be a terrible decision. I won’t even go into Mitre. Gaudin and Aceves are not the future of this organization – they are very nice pieces to the pen and I think they can be real assets. However, that’s about it. The sportswriters are either completely stupid or very naive – they actually believe this stuff that Joe and Cash are spewing.

Erin, you’re welcome; it was a great article!

  45. MTU March 9th, 2010 at 9:40 am

Whatever. I don’t agree with you.

  46. trisha - OPPC member who sees, hears, and knows all. 28 is on its way!!!!! March 9th, 2010 at 9:41 am

MTU, for better or worse I tend to think out of the box as a matter of course. I don’t work on it, it just happens. :) So I guess I’m never surprised when people think I have two heads for coming up with some of the things I do. (However, it’s probably also one of the best ways there is to prepare for any eventualities, so I always have that knocked!)

Doreen, I admit to ambivalence on this one. Seriously. I can absolutely see my way clear to thinking that the Yankees have gone into this with a firm thought that the 5th starter position would be Joba’s or Phil’s to lose. But I guess the combination of believing what Cashman and Girardi said and knowing that neither blows smokes when it comes to smoke when it comes to the welfare of their own players, leads me to know that the position is still up for grabs, no matter how hard it may be for one of the other three to grab it.

I guess if you go with the first theory, perhaps Phil or Joba would have to be pretty bad and the others entirely excellent for the 5th starter to go to one of the others.

I still love watching the guys compete for it, and I would bet that all 5 believe they have a shot at it. The fact that there are the restrictions involved (Phil having to be sent down by 4/25?) pushes me in the direction of seeing it as Phil’s to lose and that maybe he’d have to be less than stellar to lose it.

Still, and whoever said it is far too know anything for certain is absolutely correct, the whole thing is intriguing.

So I will continue to do what I do best – wait and watch.

  47. Betsy -Romine wasn't built in a day March 9th, 2010 at 9:41 am

It’s great that Frankie feels close to 100%, but the Yankees are fools if they rush him back. Frankie should have no say in this; let him sit a few weeks to be sure. Concussions are nothing to fool around with.

    Y’s Guy-

i read the comments this morning. what are you talking about ?

it is a given that everyone is giving their opinions. no one with half a brain reads sj44 or anyone else and doesn’t factor in that it’s his opinion.

so this frees sj44 or anyone else to speak freely. it’s a blog. it’s about opinions.

i find it amusing that anyone who’s actually been around the game in some capacity seems to get heat for that experience.

what do you want sj44 to do, filter out the insights he has that come from getting behind the curtain?

personally, i think the blog is great because everyone brings whatever baseball interest and baseball knowledge they have into an open forum. a casual fan who might be very knowledgeable in some other field can throw in their fish out of water insights and opinions into the mix.

the common denominator from the casual fan to the hardcore person like sj44 who’s made professional sports a major part his life is that we all love the game and spend a significant amount of time on it.

i say bring whatever level of interest and whatever level of experience to the blog. no censoring at ether end of the spectrum.let the opinions roll.

Truth probably lies somewhere in between your two theories, though likely closer to the first. By Cashman’s own admission the organization headed into this competition with some preconceived notions. I think when that’s the case, it’ll take something fairly extraordinary to get them off of those preconcieved notions. Spring training is a tough place for extraordinary things to happen. When you factor in that ST is merely a component of what will go into making this decision (i.e. Aceves’ massive success in the role he played in ’09 – do we really want him out of that?), it is really hard to believe it will be anyone but Hughes or Chamberlain.

    Yankee Thoughts

    1. A-Rod has nothing to worry about that said I hope he told the truth. He is running out of supporters and don’t get me wrong last years postseason was key to his success. At 200 million dollars and 6 years left the Yankees need him happy. In 3 years he will be the face of the organization, especially when Jete retires and he becomes the darling of the town. I am one of those hard core A-rod apologists but after a while we can not keep waiting for the shoe to drop.
    2. Cash and every Yankee Fan in the Universe agree that the development of the pitching staff is of the most importance. That said you cant tell me that having Ace, or Mitre be the number 5 and have Joba in the 7th, Hughes 8th and Mo in the 9th. One of these guys will be next in line after Mariano retires.
    3. Granderson continues to struggle versus left handed pitching. I know that the wind has been crazy at spring training but playing him at center might not be the correct move for him for the future of the ball club.
    4. Nick Johnson getting injured will be part of the 2010 norm. I home Miranda makes the team to fortify the DH spot and use him as a backup at first.
    5. Yankees need to be careful with Cervelli he is very important for the future. Catchers with concussions do not last and having a young catcher that can call a great game is very important.

  60. randy l. March 9th, 2010 at 9:55 am

    it’s a fact it’s my opinion ?

we could spend the whole day debating facts from opinions.

i guess a fact is when derek jeter hits .323.

an opinion is that jeter is a good shortstop , but doesn’t go to his left well.

half the arguments on the blog are about things like jeter going to his left and whether it’s a fact of an opinion.

so i agree it’s good to separate facts from opinions, but whether something is a fact or an opinion isn’t so easy to determine.

A-Rod on if he wasn’t talking because he didn’t want to or he had been told not to: “I think the latter.”

    I agree totally Randy!!!!!

    Randy-

“so i agree it’s good to separate facts from opinions, but whether something is a fact or an opinion isn’t so easy to determine.”

I shant belabor the point because in whole or in part I agree with your opinion/fact.

    And that’s a fact. :)

    Probably both.

Frank, you’ve stated it well. And Doreen I don’t think you’re naive, I think you’re being realistic. IMO the naive are those who are so closed-minded that they can’t see their way clear to getting beyond their own hopes and dreams in any situation.

    So we wait and watch.

  67. MTU March 9th, 2010 at 10:06 am

Maybe A-Rod watched too many Laurel and Hardy reruns as a kid ?

    Because

” This is another fine mess you’ve gotten me(us)into…”. :)

  68. RayVT March 9th, 2010 at 10:06 am

    LOL!
UZR & Sabermetrics are opinions that are quantified, but not facts as they are often portrayed. (Basically a basis for an opinion.)

  69. MTU March 9th, 2010 at 10:08 am

    Trisha-

    “So we wait and watch.”

And some of us even go so far as to “wonder”.

I don’t know if it’s a strength or a weakness, but most of the time I by-pass the wondering stage! I tend to wait, watch, and accept. Works well for me.

    ;)

Yanks need to give Miranda an OF glove.

I’ve said this before, but he can be hidden in RF well enough to get his bat into games.

His arm is decent – make him keep the ball in front of him. Even it’s less than optimal sneaking him in and out of right.

That bat is just too good, and too perfect for Yankee Stadium. He is a polished, professional hitter with lefty power, who is also a very good contact guy.

We need to keep Miranda on the ML roster. Give him some glove time at AAA and then bring him North for good.

    Tricia-

    “Works well for me.”

In the singular case of yourself that is all that matters. :)

  73. randy l. March 9th, 2010 at 10:18 am

” So I guess I’m never surprised when people think I have two heads for coming up with some of the things I do.”

well now that you mention it

    http://foresthowl.files.wordpr.....serart.jpg

now that’s just an opinion and not a fact :)
