Javier Vazquez may not have had the best beginning to his outing yesterday but that he recovered nicely to show off some of the changes he’s made since the last time he wore pinstripes.

Mariano Rivera works at his own pace during spring training and the legendary closer moved a step closer to getting in a game yesterday. The notebook also has word of a combined one-hitter during split-squad play, updates on Francisco Cervelli and Nick Johnson, as well as information on a, uh, familiar injury for Chan Ho Park.

Yanks-Pirates today at The Boss with CC Sabathia on the mound. Clubhouse opens just before 9 a.m. so check back then for the lineup and throughout the day for more updates.

If they didn’t void Giambi’s contract I don’t see any way they would attempt to void Arod’s. Last I checked he is still the 2nd best player in the game and when he’s right I would still take him over anyone because he can run.

  2. Doreen - 2010 GTLU March 9th, 2010 at 8:03 am

I’ll take lineups from anyone who wants to submit one. Very informal. :)

  3. rounding third March 9th, 2010 at 8:05 am

so blake, you see arod being worth, say $32 million dollars at age 38 or 39?

  4. raymagnetic March 9th, 2010 at 8:08 am

I doubt there’s anything that can be done about A-rods contract, oh well.

He likely won’t be worth his contract either, oh well.

    What r you gonna do?

  5. Y's Guy March 9th, 2010 at 8:09 am

    ss jeter
    dh johnson
    3b arod
    1b teixeira
    c posada
    lf granderson
    2b cano
    rf swisher
    cf gardner

its a home game, lets roll the opening day lineup out there

  6. Frank March 9th, 2010 at 8:10 am

“so blake, you see arod being worth, say $32 million dollars at age 38 or 39?”

Not a chance, but that can’t be the reason for trying to void a contract……..Which the Yankees won’t try to do anyway. He’ll get scolded for getting treatment from a doctor the club didn’t authorize, but that’ll be the end of it.

  7. Y's Guy March 9th, 2010 at 8:11 am

oops i switched arod and tex by mistake. o well, thats what ST is for….

  8. Frank March 9th, 2010 at 8:12 am

Along Y’s guy thought process re: being a home game:

    Jeter
    Johnson
    Teixiera
    Rodriguez
    Posada
    Cano
    Granderson
    Swisher
    Gardner

I made the revision for you. :)

  10. pat March 9th, 2010 at 8:17 am

    rounding third

I’ll ask you the hypothetical question I asked last night, IF, IF, IF, the Yankees could void the contract, would you want them to and is it worst case scenario for Alex or the Yankees?

The Yankees have plenty of money. Who are you playing tomorrow at third base and hitting clean up?

If you void the contract you do it for today. Not for age 39 and beyond.

  11. Doreen - 2010 GTLU March 9th, 2010 at 8:18 am

    Frank -

I am assuming you want all those guys in your lineup at their “normal” positions. Next time, make sure to put the position next to the players. Thanks. :)

  13. Betsy - Romine wasn't built in a day March 9th, 2010 at 8:23 am

It’s only a few people making a big deal about this; unlike the steroid issue, I do not see people discussing this on message boards and it’s not a big topic of conversation on sports radio. Those that are making a stink of it are doing so only because of Alex’ history or because they don’t like him. Same goes for the mediots – the Daily Spews, as usual, is putting a target on Alex’ back, but there’s no coverage about Reyes and Beltran. I would say that it’s interesting, except it’s not – and it’s not suprising. I hope we can get back to discussing baseball at some point.

  14. Pat M. March 9th, 2010 at 8:23 am

I don’t want to taint the jury pool, however you do desrve a heads up on this Ian O’Connor who has found a gig real close by…He’ll turn up peebles to find something to rag and bag on the NY Yankees when ever the opportuinity presents itself……I was around whe Dick Young / Gene Ward ruled the NY Sports pages, O’Connor has the desire to flame that tourch….He disappears from time to time, gig to gig, and when he’s tourched too many bridges he’ll retire to book writing as his new gig…….I hope my comments make it through the censors

  15. Crawdaddy March 9th, 2010 at 8:25 am

Isn’t O’Connor going to work for ESPN New York?

  16. upstate kate March 9th, 2010 at 8:27 am

    I’ll play

    DH Nick J

  17. Betsy - Romine wasn't built in a day March 9th, 2010 at 8:30 am

How’s this for conversation – people on NYYFans.com think Montero is already better with the bat than Posada.

  18. John in Ohio March 9th, 2010 at 8:31 am

One has to assume that Mike Lupica had the crap beat out of him daily as a kid….no?

Why didn’t he learn a lesson?

Hard to believe he gets paid to do what he does.

  19. pat March 9th, 2010 at 8:31 am

    Pat M

What the heck are you doing up at 5 in the morning?

  20. Betsy - Romine wasn't built in a day March 9th, 2010 at 8:32 am

Pat M, you made it through the filter. When I see those types of articles on-line or in the paper, I skip them. I am uninterested in reading about this – there’s nothing to it and it’s boring.

  21. Doreen - 2010 GTLU March 9th, 2010 at 8:32 am

    Betsy -

I think that’s a bit premature. As much as I am looking forward to the day Montero fulfills his potential, he really hasn’t hit major league pitching yet and he hasn’t even played a lot of games in AAA yet.

  22. Erin March 9th, 2010 at 8:35 am

    Doreen:

    SS Jeter
    DH Johnson

    CF Granderson
    LF Gardner

    Thanks!

  23. Jason O. March 9th, 2010 at 8:35 am

Lance Armstrong and Michele Ferrari, anyone? anyone? Bueller?

  24. blake March 9th, 2010 at 8:37 am

    Rounding third,
No I don’t think he will be worth that when he’s 39 but they didn’t make the deal for those years..they made it for the present years. As has been said previously its highly unlikely they COULD void his contract over something like this so why tick him off for no reason.

  25. Frank March 9th, 2010 at 8:37 am

Spring training Doreen. I’m not entirely on my game yet. All regular positions. I’ll clarify left and center by saying Gardner and Granderson respectively. Thanks.

  26. Pat M. March 9th, 2010 at 8:39 am

pat, I’ve been up since 3 this morning…I’ll be heading to bed after my wife calls me when she’s boarded her flight….Ian O’Connor, I cringed everytime he wrote an October piece for the USC Today Sports…..

  27. Betsy - Romine wasn't built in a day March 9th, 2010 at 8:39 am

Doreen, it’s absolutely ludicrous. This is partly why I like Romine better – they hype on Montero is ridiculous.

  28. Doreen - 2010 GTLU March 9th, 2010 at 8:40 am

So far the following people have posted lineups:

    Y’s Guy at 8:09 am

  31. Coach6423 March 9th, 2010 at 8:43 am

You like Romine better because the hype on Montero is ridiculous? Another fantastic point from Betsy.

  32. Doreen - 2010 GTLU March 9th, 2010 at 8:43 am

    Betsy -

I think Romine is lucky he is under the radar! :)

Poor Montero – everyone’s already expecting him to be the next (name your player) with the bat, all the while calling him a dud behind the plate (which he is not). It’s a tall order, but based on his interview with Mike F last week, he seems to be a hard worker with a good head on his shoulders.

What a problem to have, though, for the Yankees. Two up-and-coming catchers, right around the same ETA.

  33. pat March 9th, 2010 at 8:45 am

O’Connor used to write for LoHud (I think when it was still The Herald Statesman) back in the day.

His picture next to his story used to look back at me everyday when I read the sports section. Just like Sam’s does now at the top of this blog.

you are a very knowlegeble baseball man and generally your input on this board is insightful, but you are totally blind to your own weak points.

first off, you just can’t accept that even you could be wrong occasionally.

secondly, you feel the need to attack anyone who questions your opinions or just disagrees with you.

third, you are unable to see when you’re personal experiences and relationships cloud your judgement on a subject.

nobody ever questions that your input on this board is knowlegeble, well presented and illuminating, but still you feel the need to attack those who disagree with you. why is that? most people on here just discuss or debate a point then agree to disagree, but with you it becomes some kimd of holy war to defend your honor.

everybody here respects your baseball knowlege (including me) but you really need to chill out.

Do I need to serve smelling salts with this?

    About Ace’s outing:

    “Brian Cashman was impressed.

“He’s giving us something to think about,” said Cashman, who came to this game and did not stay in Tampa, which tells you something, too.

“Believe me, I feel we have five guys competing for one spot right now that could legitimately be in almost any rotation in the game. We’re going to have a tough decisions to make.”

Yes I know. Cashman is smoke screening and the press are idiots to buy it. The real deal is known only by a few posters on this forum.

pat or doreen, since I think both of you have attempted to be rational about this, if Ace keeps this up and shakes out at the top, I don’t think the Yankees have any choice but to start him. If that were the case, where would you see Joba and Phil ending up?

I just need to clarify – for centerfield you want Colin Curtis, right, now Curtis Granderson?

  43. MTU March 9th, 2010 at 8:58 am

From the very small sample seen in ST so far who would you pick for your LF’er :

    A Hoffman

    B Gardener

    c Winn

    D Thames

    E Curtis

F Golson, Gorecki, Winfree, or Weber

    G None of the above

I didn’t see all of the posts so there may be other posters who want to weigh in on this. IF Hughes and Joba don’t end up getting the starting position (unless you can’t see your way to that possibility but can consider it possible if even remote, feel free to answer) where do you think they would end up? Would both end up in the pen? Is there a possibility that one would go back to AAA?

I agree that the Yankees would have a tough decision to make. IF Ace continues the way he is going, do you sit him in the pen and wait for the time you might need middle relief? Tough call.

    Trisha-

I like to talk hypotheticals sometimes.

If someone other than JC or PH is selected as the #5 then one or both of JC and/or PH has to be kept stretched out.

    How ?

    AAA is the only place.

PH must be sent down before 4/25 or face revocable waivers.

JC has more time so he could be sent down later.

If Girardi believes the BP can withstand the loss of both guys then both should go to AAA.

If not, then Phil to AAA and Joba to the pen.

However, I don’t think anyone other than PH or JC are gonna get # 5. ;)

  49. pat March 9th, 2010 at 9:04 am

Oh and trust me, no one got it right without even looking at what anyone submitted.

    RayVT

Batting ninth, do you mean Colin Curtis in LF or is there a Collins on the team. (I lost my player list.)

  51. Pat M. March 9th, 2010 at 9:06 am

Tricia, That would be a turn of events that would alter what I had seen happenning in the bullpen….We knew either Hughes or Joba is going to spell the 8th inning…Aceves would be the long releif ( multi inning ) option…..Will that go to once again Hughes or Joba…Or doeone of then stay back in Tanpa for an extended spring training ???? I just don’t see both guys being shutout of the 5 th spot unless they are just brutal…..Young Master gets th 5th sopt, both Ace and Chamberlain go pen side…..March 9th tooo early to even get serious abouttyhis…However your point could gain strength over the next 3-4 starts….

  52. Doreen - 2010 GTLU March 9th, 2010 at 9:06 am

“However, all along the way, Alex needed to let the Yankees know who he was seeing and for what. It seems he didn’t let them know about Galea. That’s the problem, and that’s what the “big deal” is in Yankeetown. Another, okay, Alex, what happened THIS time moment. I agree with mel that at some point, the exasperation level within the Yankee organization has to be about at its limit, if not over it. I do not think they would do anything contractually, however.”

    ——————————-

    Very well said Doreen.

This is the point that I was trying to make even if A-Rod did absolutely nothing wrong his name is still linked to an investigation. He is still being called in to testify to the FBI. Do you think anyone’s employer would be thrilled with that? That alone is an “issue.” You would think by know he would be careful enough to cover all his bases. Even if some doctor is prescribing him cold medicine the Yankees should know, especially considering his past.

Anything medical, drug, rehab, etc. related should have been relayed back to the Yankees. If he had let the Yankees know Galea was involved there would be no issue, no speculation, no questions, because the Yankees would have come out and said we okayed him.

Instead, the Yankees have to sit back, wait, and wonder because they had no idea about Galea.

There are plenty of athletes that stay out of the news because they know to cover all their bases no matter what.

  54. Y's Guy March 9th, 2010 at 9:08 am

this is one reason why i dont pay much attention to the results of ST games.

colin curtis is not going to start for the yankees this year. in fact, he’s not even going to make the team. aceves is also not going to be in the rotation for the yankees.

the fact is that ST is long and boring and theres really not that much to talk about so hyping guys who have 2 good games in the first week of ST is all there is to do. its great when someone like curtis steps up and gets recognized but the best he can hope for coming out of this ST is to catch the attention of another team who would trade for him and give him a chance to play in the majors. he’s not going north with the yankees.

similarly, despite the fact that cashman and girardi and everybody else will say things like “we’re going to take the best arms”, etc. the 5th spot is going to be either hughes or joba, period (barring injuries). what the yankees know about guys like curtis, aceves, joba and phil from several regular seasons of play in the majors or minors counts much more than what they’ve seen in one week of ST games. and it should

  58. trisha - OPPC member who sees, hears, and knows all. 28 is on its way!!!!! March 9th, 2010 at 9:11 am

MTU, thanks for being willing to discuss hypotheticals! You may very well be right that in the end, one or the other earns the position. I have always been high on what Hughes has to offer as a starter. If I were to make a blind bet (I just made that up) I would put my money on Hughes, totally based on what I have seen of both of him and Joba, both starting and in the pen, and what I have seen of both of their “pitching mentalities.”

Because I totally believe that this is wide open it becomes all the more intriguing to me.

You know that the Yankees will go back to camp with back-up starters. I suppose that you could do worse than having Ace as that person, or as one of the people. I agree though that Phil needs to stay stretched out no matter where he goes so keeping him in the pen wouldn’t be the best idea.

Potentially tough decisions on their way. Nobody will convince me (or Cashman or Girardi I would say, lol) that the 5th position is sewn up by anyone right now.

You are always willing to look at things objectively. 63. wild will March 9th, 2010 at 12:53 pm

I don’t like what the Yankees did this offseason. why trade for Javier Vazquez. he was terrible for them in 2004. Nick Johnson is too injury prone to be worth five million for a year. Curtis Granderson will play defense well but he hit homers in Yankee stadium because of its size. To me, the Red Sox looked like they had the better/productive offseason.
