Gray skies looming
It’s not a particularly pretty day here in Tampa, and the tarp is still down on Steinbrenner Field. The Yankees are scheduled to go through a workout before the game with the Braves tonight at 7, but it sure does feel like thunderstorm weather – thick and windy. I’ll keep you posted on any developments.
If there is baseball tonight, the Yankees will likely see Braves wunderkind Jason Heyward but not, unfortunately, Melky Cabrera (who isn’t on the travel roster. Eric Hinske is, though). Listed as Yankees reserves tonight are, among others, Austin Romine, Jesus Montero, Colin Curtis, Mark Melancon and Dave Robertson.
While you’re waiting for the clouds to clear up, how about taking a look at this video of a piece of the upper deck at old Yankee Stadium coming down? Thanks to reader Jennifer for passing it on. It’s still hard to believe that, sooner than later, that stadium is going to be completely gone.

The last thing I would do is click on that link.
The last thing I want to do is watch the real Yankee Stadium come down.
I’ll keep my memories of it intact – I barely look when I cross the street, except to blow a kiss.

I have one major issue with Nardi as the roving pitching coordinator and that’s that I have yet to find any track record of success for him as a pitching instructor at any level.
I don’t have a record of his minor league stops, but at the major league level he was a failure replacing Billy Connors for the Yankees, was dropped by the Mariners and also the Chicago White Sox.
I would be thrilled if the Yankees could find an established guy to replace Contreras in this role…
My top choice would have been for the Yankees to throw an obnoxious amount of money at Dave Duncan (and I still think that they should go this route the minute Tony LaRussa leaves the Cards) but I knew that was probably not going to happen. More realistically I had thought that Joe Kerrigan, when he was let go as Yankee bullpen coach, would have been a great candidate.
Other guys I would consider:
Leo Mazzone
Mark Wiley
Don Cooper
Guys with an established track record of success who may be at a point in their careers where they don’t want to deal with the grind of traveling with a team.
Imagine setting Leo Mazzone up at the Tampa complex and being able to send the top pitchers in the organization to work with him on a 1-on-1 basis. And what’s more, Mazzone goes with a great philosophy about pitchers needing more work, not less work.
This game better not get cancelled. I got good tickets.
I saw a section come down yesterday on the news. It wasn´t my old section (16) but it was close enough to sting a bit.
By the way, the Yanks have put season tickets on sale today. There’s not many cheap seats (if any) left. I was hoping for a 41 game bleacher plan but I think all the bleacher seats are sold.
“I have one major issue with Nardi as the roving pitching coordinator and that’s that I have yet to find any track record of success for him as a pitching instructor at any level.”
Sure. Those who can’t do, coach. Those who can’t coach become pitching coordinators.
The fact that the Yanks christened the new stadium with a WS Championship makes it a little easier to endure.
I’m sitting in the side field bleachers at Legends Field right now guys and the clouds are looking quite lovely..lovely as in “you may die by getting struck by a tornado”…it will be interesting to see how the weather pans out… and if they get a game in…
Mazzone was great when he had Maddux, Smoltz, and Glavine for the better part of two decades.
He wasn’t a genius any more when he went to Baltimore.
Chip:
You ever notice Leo Mazzone was a genius when he was coaching the likes of Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz but skirted the edges of idiocy when he was coaching guys like Daniel Cabrera???
Can I say something weird an unrelated? Today, we were referring to an ANCHORMAN dialogue. And today, Hall of Fame football player Merlin Olsen passed away, according to ESPN. Ron Burgandy, when introducing himself to Veronica Corningstone, tells her that he is “friends with Merlin Olsen and he comes to my apartment from time to time.” Weird stuff.
Sam, if the game is cancelled (I hope so – I don’t want any players getting hurt), will AJ pitch tomorrow? I don’t think he’d get any kind of substantive work just throwing indoors…..Thanks!
Have you gone from LF to pitching coordinators?
Who do you want to trade for? I don’t think Farrell’s available.
I think he’d have to screw up badly to get fired. And what’s there to screw up?

Wow-that is weird
Chip, you still read Madden? The Daily Spews is a joke except for Feinsand. Madden is almost, but not quite, as bad as Pukica.
Atta boy, Frank.

SO TRUE – an awesome accomplishment !
When do tickets go on sale? I can’t find anything on yankees.com
RIP Merlin Olsen. I remember him as Jonathan Garvey on Little House on the Prairie. He seemed like a genuinely nice guy; how old was he? He must have been pretty young.
Egawa,
Only season plans tickets are on sale.

Joba Chamberlain is a better pitching instructor than Billy Conners. Billy Conners’ claim to fame has been in being George Steinbrenner’s Tampa snitch. When George leaves this life, Conner’s will become unemployed.
NYY screwed up in first letting Tony Cloninger go and then Mel Stottlemyre.
Came across this interesting debate:
Which do you find most exciting, and why? A clutch bucket with scant seconds on the clock or an RBI to end the game?

(also a little sumethin on mattingly and is he really the best one to replace Torre)
He was 69 Betsy
Bronx Born, wow – thanks. That’s way too young; I wonder what happened? How depressing.
Wow. Still remember having a nice package in that section of the upper deck back in 2008. Had many good times with good friends in the RF upper deck.
Todd Helton extended his Colorado contract by two years for a total of $9.9 mil over the two years. The selling point for Colorado was deferring $13.1 mil of his 2011 $19 mil over 10 years beginning in 2014.
Is the game tonight on TV (assuming they play?) Just curious!
No such thing as death.
Joba just gave up the game-tying homer to Feliz in Game 4, on MLB now.
Here you go Betsy.. has the particulars..

the chance of precipitation drops from 70% at 6pm to 25% at 7pm….so if they could probably get the game in if they want as the weather may have passed by then but no BP obviously and the infield may be damp
RBI to win the game is more exciting. The structure of a baseball Game allows drama to build. The absence of clocks, the pauses, the waiting to see if the ball falls or finds its way through the infield all add to the suspense. JMO and its probably a biased one.

It’s on YES and the MLB Network.
Bronx Born, thanks! I see commercials for attys representing mesothelioma victims; I think it has something to do with lead poisoning.
Ledger_Yankees Jeter scratched from lineup. Don’t know why yet. about one minute ago
Baseball to me is the perfect game and there is nothing in sports like a post-season baseball game.
Betsy,
asbestos…

Hey, not even the best chef can make cow dung taste like a great steak.
I believe the Yankees have talented arms in the minors; but they need someone to teach them how convert that talent into performance.
New Post: : Jeter scratched from tonight’s game
Trying not to panic, lol
blake,
The time element makes the buzzer beater more exciting to me. You basically have one shot to do it, and it’s do or die.
Erin,
uh oh.
Erin,
Thanks! Now I have something to watch tonight
Spring Training game or not, I’ve been away from Yankee Baseball too long for this game to be rained out tonight.
I’ve been catching up on the past threads all morning. Lots of moves all around baseball I wasn’t aware of.
For those that want to read a lot of scouting reports on the system kids. Beware that a few of them are repeats, not all are accurate and there are 14 pages worth. Many are from people/”scouts” that haven’t even seen them. I’d suggest saving them and reading them at your leisure.
Most have complete stats histories. Worth the time, just to become somewhat familiar with the names.

Great effin AB by Damon.
ARod a riot diving into 2B. LOL.
The losers who think Jorge isn’t a big-time player – watch him drive in two runs here in the ninth to put the game out of reach – especially with Mo coming in.
Haven’t watched Game 4 in a couple months. The emotions are coming up.
Mo TIME!
Weather forecast brightening any for tonight?
Looks like worst weather is between now and 6 pm – if you look at a radar loop the heavier stuff should be gone by gametime (fingers crossed!)
