Jeter scratched from tonight’s game (UPDATED with reason and Girardi audio)
The Yankees have just handed out new lineups for tonight with Derek Jeter no longer hitting leadoff. There’s no further word on what happened, and the Yankees clubhouse is closed since the team is working out. Just speculation, but there has been a bad cold going around the Yankees clubhouse – it hit Tony Pena, Dave Eiland and Joe Girardi (to a lesser degree) – so perhaps Jeter picked up the bug. As soon as we hear something I’ll update the post.
Here’s the new lineup:
Winn DH
Swisher RF
Teixeira 1B
Rodriguez 3B
Posada C
Thames LF
Hoffmann CF
Pena SS
Corona 2B
UPDATE, 3:53 p.m.: Yankees just announced that Jeter is out with the flu. Apparently the bug is picking up steam.
UPDATE, 4:34 p.m.: Yankees trainers sent Jeter home so he wouldn’t pass on his illness to anyone else, and Girardi said he hopes Jeter will play Saturday. For those wondering, here’s the travel roster for tomorrow’s looooong bus ride to Viera to play the Nationals:
Pitchers: Pettitte, Garcia, Logan, Mitre, Mitchell, Segovia
Catchers: Cervelli, Gil, Montero, Pilittere, Rivera
Infielders: Cano, Corona, Nick Johnson, Laird, Miranda, Nunez, Pena, Russo, Vazquez
Outfielders: Gardner, Curtis, Gorecki, Granderson, Hoffmann, Weber, Winfree, Winn
The bus is supposed to leave at 7:45 a.m. and Girardi said that, with an awful forecast for the east side of Florida, the Yankees expect to hear from the Nationals by 7:30 a.m. if the game will be played. If it isn’t, Pettitte will probably throw a simulated game in Tampa or the Yankees may play an intra-squad game.
In other news, Girardi said that he has encouraged Francisco Cervelli to consider wearing the extra-padded batting helmet that David Wright tried at one point last year. Also, Hal Steinbrenner was in the house today for meetings but Girardi said that wasn’t uncommon.
Here’s Girardi’s audio:

You ever notice Leo Mazzone was a genius when he was coaching the likes of Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz but skirted the edges of idiocy when he was coaching guys like Daniel Cabrera???
Hey, not even the best chef can make cow dung taste like a great steak.
I believe the Yankees have talented arms in the minors; but they need someone to teach them how convert that talent into performance.
Hopefully it’s nothing too serious for the captain.
If it’s just a bad cold, I’ll be happy. I still prefer AJ not pitch in bad weather……no sense taking any chances.
Hope it turns out to be nothing serious.
Betsy, please stop worrying about AJ! They’re not going to do anything foolish.
Spring Training game or not, I’ve been away from Yankee Baseball too long for this game to be rained out tonight.
I’ve been catching up on the past threads all morning. Lots of moves all around baseball I wasn’t aware of.
I wanna see a Montero/Heyward hour derby before the game.
M, I would feel the same way about any pitcher. I would prefer they cancel the game rather than take chances getting players injured.
gf is back! feelin better?
Hi GF! It’s so nice to have you back here – we missed you!
why play jeter in a meaningless exhibition game where it might rain?
Ahh hopefully its nothing too serious. Jetes pretty much had a cough the entire 2009 season though. Sometimes he looked like he was going to hack up a lung!

FB, Jeter.
Thank you Betsy and mick. It’s been way too long.
I have a feeling my stay at home will be permanent this time.
I know, you would, Betsy. It’s just that you’ve typed it about 4 times, so I was teasing you.
We hope so, GF…
Minka better make him some chicken noodle soup !
For those that want to read a lot of scouting reports on the system kids. Beware that a few of them are repeats, not all are accurate and there are 14 pages worth. Many are from people/”scouts” that haven’t even seen them. I’d suggest saving them and reading them at your leisure.
Most have complete stats histories. Worth the time, just to become somewhat familiar with the names.

Updated post to reflect Jeter out with the flu.
Oh, LOL M – I know you were teasing me (and to be honest, I might not have typed it 4 times for anyone other than Phil or AJ…Just kidding, I think).
The weather up here is pretty lousy, too; I’ll bet it’s the same system. It’s going to rain buckets for the next couple of days.

NYPost_Kernan As I thought with Jeter, Yankee flu. It’s running through the clubhouse, haven’t see coach Tony Pena in a week 52 seconds ago
Someone needs to disinfect the Yankee clubhouse with a can of Lysol!
Great, this season is going to stink.
CC has been awful. Jeter is sick. Burnett is going to pitch and might get hit by a few raindrops.
Ooh, nasty. Poor Jeter – well, let him take as long as it takes to get better. I expect Alex will be next as they’ve been car pooling lately, lol. Hopefully he’ll get better soon…

I almost feel sorry for the Mets. Almost.
Flu shots are mandatory in the military. It never failed that I’d end up with a worse case of the flu by taking them than I ever had before them.
Erica, I remember that. The thing is, the regular flu shot is different than the swine flu shot. I need to get flu shots because although I don’t get sick (can’t remember the last time I got a fever), I have allergies and I get very bad colds. The flu shot has been a god-send to me.
Hey Sam…..Do you know if Vazquez is on the 6th inning list?

————————————————————
Marv was a great minor league slugger for the yankees. He just couldn’t get it going in the majors. He was good for a laugh, though. The stories are legendary. In one of his first games with the Mets in 1962, he hit a two out bases loaded triple to put the Mets ahead. The umpire called him out on appeal at first base for missing the bag. Stengel comes out to argue and old time umpire Shag Crawford waved Casey back, saying, “Forget it Casey. He missed second base, too.” None of the runs scored and the Mets lost.

But it will soon change.
Bronx Jeers -
From what I read this morning, they were going to treat it like it was a temporary inflammation, but apparently there is a test that can more accurately diagnose the condition. I would imagine he’s either had or will be having that.
I have Hashimoto’s Disease which is the opposite condition -underactive thyroid. So I take synthroid every day. No biggie.
Bronx Jeers, there ought to be some kind of thing where if you have to take medication long-term, there’s some kind of discount. To have to keep refilling prescriptions seems awfully expensive.
What team is in Viera? Ick – nasty weather in Florida. Maybe the team should go to the arcade again, lol.

Who is pitching tonight for the braves?
this just in : george mitchell has just retired from public service.
the red sox have signed him to a one minor league contract so he can retire a red sox.
mitchell will then move to his new job as an impartial analyst for espn along with that other new impartial analyst nomar garciaparra .
mitchell, in tears of gratitude, said it was a lifetime dream to return to the red sox after having to leave to clean up the rest of major league baseball.
mitchell said.”unfortunately, not all teams are as ethical as the red sox. i told larry lucchino on leaving that i bet i don’t find anything about the red sox “.
( just kidding folks. just had to get that out )
Doreen,
I had Grave’s and had the radioactive iodine treatment. Now I take levothyroxin. Which I guess is the same thing as yours.
I can see why they are going to wait it out. I used to take the pills for hyper and the side effects are kind of harsh. He could probably play but there’s concern as his heart rate and BP are probably inflated.
Betsy,
It’s not really the cost but the trouble of getting the prescriptions and having them filled all the time. It’s not a controlled substance or anything like that.
I usually go to Ecuador once or twice a year so sometimes I’ll just buy it there without a prescription.

Brian Giles was a steroid machine. Much like his bro Marcus.
Illnesses like Mono can cause inflamation and lead to changes in thyroid hormone output. Usually is self limiting, hopefuly the case with Reyes.
Giles is a horrible human, that should be kicked his face in plentiful times, but he is a hell of a baseball player, king of the OBP% until Nick Johnson and Albert Pujols dethroned him.

GreenBeret–you can’t get the flu from a flu shot. It’s just not possible. The correlation of catching the flu around the same time as getting the vx (and I mean the virus, not a shot reaction) is because, generally, people who get the vx are at doctor’s offices and clinics with many other people, some of whom are already sick.
You can get the flu from a flu shot because it’s usually the weakened form of the virus…. it’s pretty rare, though.

Don’t start telling me what I had. Reactions don’t last 5-7 days. After 20 years of getting them, I know the difference.
Doreen,
Wow, we had that discussion some time ago!
Well, the upshot is, if you can stomach ‘em, eat radishes!
(They also are great for the bones. Some pharmas predispose to osteo problems, and one way to check is with sulfur, like MSM or if supplements are a pain just good old radishes – black and red, & daikon, the long white carrot looking ones used in Asian cooking).
Doreen,
I see. You have a serious ethical dilemma on your hands. LOL.
I was really surprised this time actually. They raised the rates for every customer so they usually won’t cut you a break because it would be unfair. So, I just called to say I needed to cancel Showtime to make up for the increase and the guy just said right away don’t worry about it I can lower your bill.
GreenBeret-That is no way to treat a lady. She did not say that you got a reaction. You need to settle down. Elizabeth said you got the flu because you went to a doctor office, where the flu is more prevalent.
Looks like GB has made a new friend
Betsy – current influenza vaccine given intramuscularly is all killed/inactivated virus particles. It is biologically impossible to contract influenza infection from that. While one may develop soreness, muscle fatigue, even low-grade fever from that, it is due to personal reaction to the foreign antigen and not influenza infection.
That is in contrast to the inhaled nasal spray, which is live, attenuated virus particle, and may, not infrequently, cause mild influenza disease.
Just to be correct about it….
Doreen,
Just need to clarify: MSM, because it has sulfur, is good for bones, but it isn’t good for thyroid slowness.
Radishes are also good for bones, but they are not goitregenic, as MSM would be for a person who’s hypo. Just to be clear!
