AJ (don’t pitch him, please, if it’s rainy out) is only going to throw FB and change-ups, so let’s not panic if he gets smacked around.
TV or radio?
Its on YES
YES!
Greg Golson hit .263 .308 .395 .703 in the minors. He isn’t a threat to Gardner, I don’t care how athletic he is.
Its also on the MLB Channel live at 7.
Hey Sam, arent you able to get the list of the reserves who will go in in the 6th? Chad listed them each game.
Brandon,
You gotta stop buddy. Greg Golston has not hit at any level of the minor leagues.
He’s neither a better hitter or player than Gardner.
He isn’t even as fast as Gardner.
You gotta gettin’ caught up in fringe guys hitting HR’s in early March ST games against career minor leaguers.
Can’t wait for john sterling calling the game tonight!!!!! calling c
Ledger_Yankees Cervelli on the travel list to Viera on Friday. Looks like he’s on schedule coming off his concussion. 2 minutes ago
Brandon,
when cashman traded edwar to Texas, he should had asked for Murphy unless he really plan on keeping Hoffman. hoping Hoffman breaks out and become their starting LFer.
Ugh – I don’t get the Yankees. They give Cervelli the rest of the Winter League off to recover from his concussion, but they are rushing him back now? I can’t think of a stupider decision.
SJ-
“I know you and I have already gone back and forth a bunch of times but I would really appreciate your answer to my question about Nardi’s specific job duties”
Does he just “coordinate” as you say, or does he actually teach pitching to minor league pitchers ?
Are you saying he does NOT get get involved with teaching at all ?
Cash would have had to trade a lot more than Edwar to get David Murphy. We were lucky to get cash.
Its starting to get veryyy windy in Tampa right now. We have a tornado watch and all that. Still cant decide if I should risk heading to the game, wasting the parking money.. They are in store for some bad weather. I doubt they will push it either considering its only ST….
Sam, do you mind posting an update right away if you find out its cancelled? i appreciate that in advance…
wonder if alex still wants jose reyes on our team?
He’s not an on field, everyday teacher MTU. Does he do some on field work? Yes. Is that the big part of his job? No.
I know you believe there is some magical “guru” in the organization who can fix any pitcher. It doesn’t work that way.
You have a bunch of coaches in the organization working with these guys. There are no gurus.
Just a bunch of hard working, competent, underpaid (they all are at the minor league level across baseball) guys.
SJ-
Sorry I did not see your other post first from the other thread.
I find what you said quite amazing.
If Contreras’s direct role is that small how can he get credit for anything other than being a coordinator ?
Wow !
“Cash would have had to trade a lot more than Edwar to get David Murphy. We were lucky to get cash.”
I wasn’t completely serious.
SJ44, I didn’t say he was the better overall hitter, he has better power, he has the most upside fielding, hitting, yes running too, he’d give Gardy a run for his money if he gets the bat going.
BTW what does Colin Curtis have to do to get 3 ABs? Thames, Hoffman continue to get penciled in over him, so does Winn.
Why do we even want Murphy? He’s basically league average. Gardner and/or Winn can be that.
Is it up to the Yankees whether they cancel? I hope they do……sounds like dangerous weather.
SJ-
No. I really don’t believe there is a GURU even though it may seem that way to you.
I was just surprised that his role is so indirect and basically irrelevant.
I had heard his involvement was much greater than that in relation to direct teaching.
He has no upside with the bat Brandon. He hasn’t hit his entire career! lol
He’s a AAA-AAAA player. That’s all he is and the chances are that’s all he will ever be.
Brandon,
They are getting Randy Winn ready for the season. They want to see what Thames and Hoffman can do because they are battling for the final spot on the roster.
They aren’t interested in getting Colin Curtis AB’s.
He will get enough of them in Scranton.
Bohdi-
wasn’t there an interview with Nardi Contreras on PP recently ?
Did it say anything about what Contreras actually does ?
If so, could you post it ?
Thanks.
Thanks for your response in the previous thread SJ. I’m going to try to keep up with the comments/post here a bit more so I’m not harping on topics probably previous discussed ad nauseum.
It’s pretty tough for me to admit it – but I think the Yankees MIGHT have people within the organization who can project Joba’s future better than I can. MIGHT.
I obviously hope they’re wrong in their evaluation of Joba. In the meantime, I’ll just try not to let my Joba-love prevent me from having a rational discussion on his role with the team.
“BTW what does Colin Curtis have to do to get 3 ABs? Thames, Hoffman continue to get penciled in over him, so does Winn.”
For better or worse, Winn is going to be on the 25 man. Got to get him good to go.
Cash would have had to trade a lot more than Edwar to get David Murphy. We were lucky to get cash.
=========
They must have been druged as was the Braves to not force us to pay just to get rid of him. Too bad Cash’s Jedi mind tricks hasnt been ablt to get rid of Kei. Is this his last year?
OT: Looks like the ‘Cuse is going down the drain this afternoon at MSG. Little surprising.
MTU,
How does somebody get credit? Simple. Give effusive interviews about the prospects to websites.
People love that stuff.
That’s how you get a “name” for yourself among the fan base.
Fans LOVE prospects. So much so (and this goes for every team, not just the Yankees), they overrate just about every one of them.
Nardi comes along and gets overly effusive about these kids. He may work with one or two of them on an incremental basis and all of a sudden, he’s a “guru” in the internet world.
Here’s the way I look at it……
Major league pitching coaches make between 2-4 times the amount of money minor league pitching coordinators make.
If Nardi was such a guru, a major league team would have snatched him up by now.
He does a good job for what he’s hired to do. No more, no less.
Let’s not make him out to be more than he is.
Hobs,
No worries.
All this stuff usually works itself out in the end.
Guys end up playing to their levels, regardless of their roles on the team.
Frank,
I was listening on the radio yesterday that it may be best for Syracuse to lost early. They have a few of their men banged up and would be best to get some rest. So its a win win for them. I believe they will get a 1 seed regardless of the tourny outcome.
SJ-
“If Nardi was such a guru, a major league team would have snatched him up by now.”
Again, I personally am not saying NC is a GURU.
However, to your point above correct me if I am wrong but hasn’t NC been a MLB pitching coach in the past. Possibly more than once.
Perhaps, his skills have declined ?
I wouldn’t know.
SOS:
May be the best thing. Not sure on the seeding though. Wonder whether they slip to a #2 if Ohio State and Duke whistle through their resepctive tourneys.
MTU,
He’s the position he’s in right now. No more, no less.
The Yankees have PLENTY of competent pitching coaches, and pitching-centric people (like their manager for example) in the organization to work with these guys.
There is no shortage of brainpower.
MTU,
Nardi is the decision maker when it comes to pitching. They give all players drafted 30 days to pitch ‘as is’ once they sign and get in games (or instructs, etc…). Then Nardi decides what changes to make. He instructs coaches of any mechanical tweaks. He also decides what pitches a pitcher should add or drop. He’s a big CB guy.
Not for the faint of heart. http://www.ireport.com/docs/DOC-418569
Yankee stadium coming down.
Where is Chad??
Chad is on vacation.
Frank,
Duke is ranked #4. They will get the 1 seed. I doubt that Ohio State knocks the Orange off even if the win out right. They play in a weeker division and have more loses(7) this year. To have ONLY 4 loses in the Big East this year is a major feat. I think they have it locked up.
Just for the record on NC :
“Following his playing career, Contreras served as a coach in several major league organizations, including a few at the major league level. He was the pitching coach for the New York Yankees in 1995, the Seattle Mariners in 1997-1998, and then with the team that gave him his shot at the majors, the White Sox, from 1998 until 2002. In 2005, he returned to the Yankees organization, where he currently serves as their minor league pitching coordinator, in which capacity he gained recognition for developing pitch count guidelines—styled “Joba rules”—for Joba Chamberlain.”
This is all WIKI has to say about NC.
There was an interview with PP recently but I do not have access to it.
Would be interesting to read.
Later people.
Frank,
I heard on Dan Patrick(i believe)a question thats interesting. Would you take Kansas and Syracuse or the field? Most took those two. I would play the percentages and take the field even though i think one of them will probably win.
SOS:
Probably the field, but I think Kansas is going to win it.
Quick drive by…celebrating a Hoya win!!
“In 2005, he returned to the Yankees organization, where he currently serves as their minor league pitching coordinator, in which capacity he gained recognition for developing pitch count guidelines—styled “Joba rules”—for Joba Chamberlain.””
Recognition, eh? Interesting they chose to use that word rather than “credit”
Golson is athletic and has a good arm. He is nearly as fast as Gardner with a bit of power, but he has hit less in the minors than Gardner. He could develop, but he won’t make this team unless several others completely fall on their faces. He too seems to be a defensive replacement, pinch runner type.
Jennifer that is such as sad thing to watch, literally it made me think of this song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWhmXoEr9z0
Farewell old friend.
I saw that, Jennifer. I came here to post that same link. Sad to see it come down like that.
Just a complete side note –
This latest thing with the Mets is really strange. At what point does a team have to reconsider their medical personnel?
1. They screw up the handling of Ryan Church’s concussion
2. Screw up the handling of Carlos Beltran’s knee and Jose Reyes’s hamstring last season
3. Beltran and the Met doctors significantly disagree over how to handle his knee to the point that he has surgery without team consent.
4. Mets say Reyes will be on the field in a couple of days and a few hours later the agent says that Reyes is going to need about 8 weeks…
MTU,
You can’t post PInstripes Plus links, it’s subscription based.
You can’t even cut and paste their stuff (there’s actually a way to do it, but I don’t remember how to do it).
Contreras does a standing interview with Pinstripes Plus, as do other coordinators in the organization. Aldred has also done Q&As with them.
Nardi’s job description reportedly is:
“In charge of developing organization arms.”
I remember it being reported that Contreras put the Joba Rules in place in 2007.
Here’s his playing days bio:

Ledger_Yankees Tarp still on the field. Clouds looming. #live 2 minutes ago
This team is built around the infield (two and maybe three or four hall of fame locks) and now Granderson. With that sort of talent and production, you do not need to worry too much about the other two outfield spots.
Watching that video of the upper deck coming down was rough.
Not taking any sides in this debate.
But it seems to me that Contreras is a troubleshooter. One example is last season (or the one before?) when Phil went back to AAA (or maybe it was the Bronx) and he had a little hiccup? Nardi caught the problem on video, did a side session with Hughes and it was fixed. So it would seem that he knows a little something about pitching.
I haven’t heard any complaints about him except from SJ, whom we all respect greatly. So I wouldn’t completely dismiss them out of hand.
But, as long as we have good pitching coaches at each level, and Nardi doesn’t interfere with their jobs, it would seem to be that the Yankees are fine with him doing the roving thing.
Just like being the GM of a business or chain of retail stores. Some are good, some are full of themselves, and others do an adequate job. But ulimately, results are going to come on the heels of the individual branches or stores’ efforts.

Ledger_Yankees Melky Cabrera not on the trip, but Hinske and his nifty new back tat are coming to town. #live about 1 minute ago
Anyone read Madden this morning?
He (in my opinion wrongly) predicts that the Yankees will look back on the decisions to trade for Granderson and let Damon go with regret.
I get that Damon was a very good player (offensively) for the Yankees, but articles like that just prove to me what a short memory columnists (and fans) in this town have. It wasn’t too long ago that everyone in this town was killing the Yankees for having a glorified DH in CF/LF in Damon. That all the years were taking their toll on his body and so on and so forth.
Again, the Yankees did exactly the right thing here. Given the option of dropping a player a year too early or hanging onto him a year too long I’ll take the too early option every time – and I think that Curtis is going to be the best all around CF the Yankees have had in a very very long time.
MTU, look what I found for you:

Torre Puts His Trust in Tampa. No, Really, He Does.
By TYLER KEPNER
In past years, Joe Torre might have gotten a suggestion on pitching coming from Tampa, Fla., and ignored it. Billy Connors, a confidant of George Steinbrenner’s and a nemesis of the former pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre, was the organization’s pitching guru.
With Steinbrenner’s influence fading, Connors is taking less of a public role. Nardi Contreras, also a former major league pitching coach, is in charge of the development of the Yankees’ minor league pitchers. And it is Contreras who established the ground rules for how Torre will use Joba Chamberlain.
Chamberlain – who is being trailed by the brilliant Sports Illustrated writer, Gary Smith, this weekend – retired the side on 10 pitches last night. But because Contreras determined that Chamberlain must get one day off for every inning he pitches, Torre cannot use him tonight. And he’s fine with that.
“I have a great deal of respect for Nardi,” Torre said. “He’s got absolutely no axe to grind other than what’s best for the pitchers. This is what he came up with, and I trust the man. I’m not saying it won’t change, but somebody else would have to tell me. I don’t know as much as he does about the physical aspect of pitching.”

Thanks again. i will study it more carefully later.

While i agree that melky and a-jax would be great to still have, Swish is no bum out there and defensively gardner isnt bad either.
I dont think it is worth any panic or lost sleep.
HEYYYY – Did you climb that mountain??
M -
I have one major issue with Nardi as the roving pitching coordinator and that’s that I have yet to find any track record of success for him as a pitching instructor at any level.
I don’t have a record of his minor league stops, but at the major league level he was a failure replacing Billy Connors for the Yankees, was dropped by the Mariners and also the Chicago White Sox.
I would be thrilled if the Yankees could find an established guy to replace Contreras in this role…
My top choice would have been for the Yankees to throw an obnoxious amount of money at Dave Duncan (and I still think that they should go this route the minute Tony LaRussa leaves the Cards) but I knew that was probably not going to happen. More realistically I had thought that Joe Kerrigan, when he was let go as Yankee bullpen coach, would have been a great candidate.
Other guys I would consider:
Leo Mazzone
Mark Wiley
Don Cooper
Guys with an established track record of success who may be at a point in their careers where they don’t want to deal with the grind of traveling with a team.
Imagine setting Leo Mazzone up at the Tampa complex and being able to send the top pitchers in the organization to work with him on a 1-on-1 basis. And what’s more, Mazzone goes with a great philosophy about pitchers needing more work, not less work.
Bohdi-
Yes, I did.
Today is just local.
But I gotta get going.
If you ever want to hear more about some my adventures or misadventures let me know.
