Pettitte back in the pen
Because of the rain, Andy Pettitte is throwing a bullpen session today. It’s too wet in Tampa for anything other than indoor work. Pettitte will not pitch in a game until Wednesday the 17th.
“He’s got four more starts,” Joe Girardi said. “We’ll make sure that he sees live people.”
Joba Chamberlain will pitch out of the bullpen behind Pettitte on Wednesday. Phil Hughes will pitch in relief of A.J. Burnett on Tuesday.
UPDATE, 12:19 p.m.: Pettitte is two innings into his three-inning session. He’s pitching to Austin Romine while Mike Harkey alternates standing in the left and right batters box. Dave Eiland is watching from behind the mound.
Two batting cages over, Joe Girardi is throwing batting practice to his son and one of his son’s friends. Two very different baseball worlds, 30 feet apart.

Sweeney on with Joe and Evan…Phil has looked FINE, clowns.
Chad, how come AJ threw a simulated game, but Andy can only throw a pen? Also, do you know if AJ threw any changeups? I admit I’m obsessed with him throwing this pitch, lol.
Oops, Sweeney not on yet – but he will be.
Ugh, forget it. I can’t listen to these idiots criticizing the Yankees for trying to prove that Joba is a starter. Nice- believing the Yankees are going against what they believe just to show the media. Sigh – WFAN has gone down the tubes, but what can I expect from two Met fans?

Betsy, do you ever leave here?
Betsy,
Nobody in the media is going to chart every pitch in a side session. That would be ridiculous.
Each pitcher prepares differently to start the season.
Trust me, the Yankees know what they are doing with these guys.
Don’t sweat the small stuff. This is small stuff.
sorry for bragging, but… i just got my ticket package, first game = 4/18 vs TEX

Awesome!
Ken, none of your business.
“i just got my ticket package, first game = 4/18 vs TEX”
Sunday plan?
Where are your seats?
SJ, not really sweating it so much as just curious…I’m not worried about Andy at all.
I wasn’t here for A.J.’s sim game so I don’t know what he threw, but I’m sure there were changeups involved. Pettitte is doing the same thing A.J. did. No live hitters, just someone standing in the box.
Bronx Jeers – One of my friends has full season tickets in bleachers 202, so I just get my own “ticket package” from him. basically I take all of the sunday games he’ll give me, i got a mets and 2 boston games… in addition to like 10 others. very excited.
Sweeney is either dumb or completely naive to believe Eiland and Joe are seriously considering Aceves/Mitre/Gaudin.
bronx jeers – and i never, ever sit in my seats. any time i go to a game i just wander around. we mainly hang out main level 3rd base side standing behind one of the sections.
Chad, thanks! I guess as long as they get their work in, it’s fine. I thought it was important that they face live hitting, but I suppose one day without it won’t kill them.
How come the next games for Hughes and Joba are behind AJ and Pettitte?
“How come the next games for Hughes and Joba are behind AJ and Pettitte?”
It would seem they have to somehow make up for these lost games, no?
It’s funny but the bleachers are the hottest ticket packages now.
Totally sold out.
Last season I would frequently sneak down from my 50$ terrace seats to sit in the bleachers.
Ken,
If Betsy wants to spend every waking hour here, and even sleepwalks to her computer to be on Lohud, I can’t see how it’s any of your concern.
My suspicion is, you would never have made such a comment to any of the male posters, many of whom spend as much time on here as, well…anyone.
Not for you to judge what is excessive, is it? Or to bring your gender bias, which no one cares to listen to.
Is the weather bad Statewide in Florida ???? Started my workout early today with great anticipation of watching Yankee Baseball and College Hoops……Bummer….I see that our pal Jerome Ave came by in the middle of the night to share his love for us…..Chump….Betsy, we need to get you on a Transcendental Meditation program or you’re not going to survive the season…..Breathe Deep !!!!
“Started my workout early today with great anticipation of watching Yankee Baseball”
hey me too, at least its over with.
Hey Pat it seems to be bad all over. When I looked at the radar, just wet…
Bodh, thanks! Not only that, but I have no idea who this guy is. If you or someone I post with on a daily basis wants to tease me about it, that’s fine. I don’t know that he’s being sexist, just arrogant.
Pat M, I’m really not stressed. The questions I’m asking are coming from a curiosity I have as I honestly don’t know the answers to the questions. I feel like the only stupid question is an unasked one, so even if it makes me look obsessed, I’m going for it, lol. However, your idea of meditating is a good idea…or else I might I might need to be mediCATED, lol

“I like the fastball/changeup combination Buchholz possesses.”
sj44-
a good change up for any pitcher is such a weapon.
i’m hoping hughes can develop his sooner than later.
i agree buchholz still has to prove himself over a full year against all kinds of competition as you say.
the time it’s taking for buchholz , hughes , and joba shows it’s not easy to develop starting pitching when you are always a contender for a playoff spot even when teams have all the financial resources that the red sox and yankees have.
there is no luxury like the royals or marlins have to just throw a guy in the fifth spot and let him learn on the job.
baseball, the work out, or both?

I think Ken may be a peeping tom lurking of the shadows of the LoHud blog.
Pat M,
Its awful throughout the state today.
I’m in South Florida and its been a monoon all day.
Just one of those, “get nothing accomplished” days.
I hear you Besty, affectionate teasing is automatically qualified.
Not that I need my girlfriend to tell me what is and what is not gender bias, but I happened to read the comment aloud to her and she went berserk

I keep trying to get her to join, but she’s a lurker here only, lol. She’s on other boards, though.

so true, I wonder if Greinke, Felix, Josh Johnson, etc would have been this good this soon if they had come up in the AL east. It doesn’t matter how talented you are at the big league level, there is a learning curve that requires time and failure to some extent to get past.

SJ, I guess your Ferreira Golf Cart is staying in the cart house for the day…..Indoor workouts suck atthis time of the spring, especially if you’re player on a timer for re-assignment……
What’s Zumba???
my wife does it, its some kind of latin dance workout or something or so she says. Shes tried to get me to go with no success thus far.
Cashman and Theo need an “under the table” agreement to provide each other with some breathing room to develop their young starters.
If they don’t re-sign Beckett we won’t sign Lee and let’s see what some of these kids can do.

Blake, That’s what it is for the most part…High intensity 55 minutes of Salsa and all types of dance moves that incorporate all core and leg muscles…..Part of my rehab as it’ll improve balance and coordination….The most difficult thing I’ve ever done…..Upside, it’s 75 women, 3 guys and all I do is watch the ladies in front of me so I can try ( great failure ) follow their footwork….You get 3 12 second breaks…..700 calorie workout…..

Blake,
I’ll give you the short answer. No. None of those guys would develop under the white hot glare of Boston and NY.
That’s why both franchises have such a hard time developing homegrown arms.
Yankee fans panic over 3 ST losses in a row and guys working on things during those outings.
Red Sox fans are in a 24/7 sheer state of panic.
How in the world do you develop pitching, or even position players, that way?
That’s why the Red Sox, regardless of their overhyped farm system, paid 82.5 million for John Lackey. A guy with a bad elbow and horrible numbers pitching in Fenway Park.
Its why the Yankees acquired Javy Vazquez instead of having 2 young guys in the rotation.
Its about knowns vs. unknowns.
Boston and NY, for all they have going for them, simply don’t have the luxury to wait on unknowns. Its about acquiring as many knowns as possible.
Neither cities fan bases or executive offices will allow for “rebuilding” or “development”. Its not in either franchises mission statements.
Its all done on the fly. Not exactly the optimum way to develop from within.
It is just pouring down in Clearwater right now.
Pat, you do Zumba? I think you have spent too much time out in the SoCal sun. Time to get you back to NY to toughen you up a little bit.
apologize in advance if that comment offended any of the ladies on here especially since this is going to be a hit and run.
Randy, I think that’s the thing I’ve learned most over the past year or so – how hard it is to develop pitching. Now, Phil has had injuries, but I suppose that’s part of the game. He seems to be comfortable with the change; I think it probably just needs to be decent to good, correct? He doesn’t need to have a great change if he’s got his FB command/cutter/curve. One thing I’d like to see is Phil gain more consistency with the curve. He didn’t use it out of the pen much and when he did, it got hit.
LGY, good point!
Blake, maybe not, but I do think it’s not necessarily a bad thing for Phil/Joba/Bucholz to go through; they really are learning from facing the very best. Phil’s #s in 2007 ended up being terrific for a 21 year old in this division; I do think you have to look at the numbers differently for all pitchers in the AL East.
Jeers,
Beckett is close to signing a new deal with the Red Sox.
Wouldn’t shock me if its announced before the end of ST.
” That’s what it is for the most part…High intensity 55 minutes of Salsa and all types of dance moves that incorporate all core and leg muscles…..Part of my rehab as it’ll improve balance and coordination….The most difficult thing I’ve ever done…..Upside, it’s 75 women, 3 guys and all I do is watch the ladies in front of me so I can try ( great failure ) follow their footwork….You get 3 12 second breaks…..700 calorie workout…..”
Geez, yea she said its really hard, sounds like there are some fringe benefits involved as well. I’ve been doing Yoga (or attempting to) for a few weeks and I really can’t do it at all, turns out I’m not real bendy.

Thank you! I love the name Zumba
hmmm…I don’t think I am coordinated enough for zumba
sorry you people in FL have such lousy weather. We have had 10 days of uncharacteristically beautiful pre-spring weather, clear and starry nights, sunny days in the 40s, there are lots of places where the snow is gone.
That’s good news for the Sox, but I wouldn’t have wanted the Yankees to go after him anyway. If Vasquez pitches well this year, I see no reason not to re-sign him…UNLESS Joba is in the rotation this year and pitches well. In that case, Phil gets the last spot. If Joba goes to the pen, I suspect he stays there and the Yanks still need another pitcher. Many Yankee fans would say that the Yanks should just offer arb to Javy and get the 2 picks for him – I guess that’s ok, but Javy will be a lot cheaper than Cliff Lee (if Lee even goes FA).
Put Joba in the NL west pitching most of his games in a division with 3 pitchers parks or flip flop him with Pelfrey pitching 1/2 his games in Citifield without the DH. I’m pretty sure he would be regarded as one of the best young starters in the league.
The best thing for a young player in the Yankees system is a player on the major league roster going down with a serious injury because then the team has no choice.
I’ve read that about Beckett and the Sox and I think it’s very un-Sox like to do that.
I guess because we all remember him from 2003 it seems like he’s an older guy with a lot of mileage on that arm but it’s not true.
He’s actually relatively young and has only pitched 200 inn a couple of times.
They’re saying the deal would be similar to Lackey & AJ’s which I think is pretty good for them.
I fear that keeping him and a possible emergence of Buckholtz will enable them to cast off a package centered around Clay for a big bat next winter like A-Gon or God forbid Mauer if that deal falls through.
Rich on the 6 Train @ 12:33, With rainouts last night and today plus an off day Monday, in order for the NYY to get all their SP consistent work in games, they have to “double up” on some of these games. Otherwise somebody could go 8 or 9 days without pitching in a game.
Blake.
Are you enjoying the Yoga. I have been doiing it every day for a long time. I am not flexible either. Yoga is more about what you do “inside”, within the posture, than about being flexible.
Bronx Jeers – every action has a consequence, and the Red Sox’ signing of Beckett to another contract would 1)potentially free up Bucholz for a deal 2)give them a very solid rotation (barring injury, of course), and 3)increase their costs, more so if cost-controlled Bucholz is traded for FA contract Adrian Gonzalez.
This would make me wonder if they’re changing their business model, as their payroll costs would be going up, not sure where the new revenue to match it would come from.
RichardC,
Yea I’m enjoying it. I’m only doing it one day a week (its part of the p90x workout) though. I am getting a little better and am finding out you’re right, its more about strength, balance, mindset, etc, than flexibility. Its painful during but you feel amazing when its over.
Randy I ( The Original Tin Cup ) , are you still playing with just a wedge and putter ???? LGY,I’ll be in NY either in May or June ( Yanks-Mets )…..Zumba is part of my rehab / physical therapy and as I stated it is the most difficult and challenging thing I’ve ever done…..My feet just are too slow to respond….Brown loafers on a black Tux….I am getting a little better each time out…..Just about all the women are so very fluid and they make it look so easy…I stay far in the back corner…..
Joe from Long Island
Buchholz turns 26 this year! His days as a major piece in a package is almost done.
“This would make me wonder if they’re changing their business model, as their payroll costs would be going up, not sure where the new revenue to match it would come from.”
I think perhaps the Sox are begginging to see the writing on the wall. Now that the Yankees are spending their money the right way and not wasting it, they may have no choice but to try match them payroll wise in order to keep up. I also don’t know where the money will come from though, they have good revenue streams but nothing like the Yankees do.
Anyone have any insight into the few possible Latin American kids the Yankees are looking at:
Hecheverria a shortstop from Cuba, DePaula a top pitching prospect, and another more diminutive in stature but flamethrowing pitching prospect. Three big money guys connected to the Yankees.
Any room for one, two or three (I highly doubt three) of these guys? Any word on where the Yanks stand?
Thanks for the help.
Blake.
Glad you are enjoying it. I am pushing 60 yrs old and just maintaining a level of flexibility. But my body is loose and open for my age. And,yeah, it feels really good. I mean, really good. Its an energy thing. It keeps the energy moving and open where energy tends to shut down as we age.
“This would make me wonder if they’re changing their business model, as their payroll costs would be going up, not sure where the new revenue to match it would come from”
Lot coming off the books up there. Ortiz, Lowell, Lugo’s money. Probably Beltre’s too. Varitek. That’s something in the neighborhood of $45M-$50M…a lot of it dead. Beckett get’s an $8M raise and they lock in Martinez as their DH/occasioanl C for $13M-$14M (a $6M to $7M raise) and they’ve got themselves some room to add a significant bat and come in at less than they’ll be at in 2010.
“DePaula a top pitching prospect”
Thought I saw that he signed with Seattle.
Frank,
They can’t consider Vmart a longterm catching option can they? Mauer would be perfect for them as they need a big bat and a catcher, which is why I guess you hear so much about it. They will have money to spend next offseason but I’m not sure where they go with it if Mauer re-signs with the Twins and an Adrian deal can’t be reached. Next year’s class gets much thinner if Pujols and Mauer aren’t in it.
Sox are pushing 170 mil this season which is odd as they don’t have a single guy over 20 mil (Yanks have 3) and only 1 over 15 mil (Lackey) while the Yanks have 6.
DePaula hasn’t signed with Seattle yet.
The Cuban SS is mulling 6 offers and there is no timetable for his decision.
The other kid? No idea. That’s been an under the radar thing you and I haven’t heard much reliable scuttlebutt on that one.
Blake:
No, they can’t. Which is why I indicated DH/occasional C.
Mauer is perfect for anybody! lol
He’s also perfect for the Yankees.
Now, I know the prospect lovers will tell me about Romine and Montero.
Trust me, if Joe Mauer ever hit the open market (which isn’t happening, IMO), the Yankees would be front and center with a HUGE offer.
LH bat in Yankee Stadium. All-American guy. He would OWN NY.
“No, they can’t. Which is why I indicated DH/occasional C.”
I know, I’m just saying its going to be an issue for them.
Pat m,
USC coming to town today. A friendly wager?
“Trust me, if Joe Mauer ever hit the open market (which isn’t happening, IMO), the Yankees would be front and center with a HUGE offer.”
oh I agree with that, but you could make the argument that the Sox need him more than the Yankees do.
Outside of Mourneau, Nathan and Cuddeyer, the Twins have squat on the books for 2011.
They’ll certainly have the money for Mauer but who knows. Maybe Mauer has cold toes right now. Which could lead to cold feet.
the sox will offer mauer a billion dollars to play there… his hit spreads are tailor made for fenway.
It’s not so ridiculous to think that there’s a real competition.
If Phil doesn’t add to his arsenal and Joba can’t get it together, then they don’t deserve the spot.
Aceves is a good, solid starter. He could be potentially one of the most efficient starters in the game.
But, I think the Yankees are secretly pleased with Phil’s progress this spring.
They’re probably waiting patiently until Joba shows up.
Feinsand handicapped the race.
Hughes 2-1
Chamberlain 5-1
Mitre 10-1
Aceves 12-1
Gaudin 15-1
Hughes, Aceves, mitre are my top 3 for the #5 job.
I think if Hughes fails to win the job. It could be Aceves #5, Hughes to the pen, and Joba to AAA because the only scenario that would have a non Hughes/Joba pitcher as your 5th means that things are seriously f’ed up with those 2.
Aceves has a bad back and is the only guy versatile enough to be used in the Mendoza-like role Girardi loves to use him in.
If folks want to believe Mitre or Gaudin will win the spot, fine by me.
The spot has been Hughes’ to lose since the end of last season and he has done nothing thus far to lose it.
Blake,
EVERYBODY could use a Joe Mauer. Yes, even the Yankees.
Its a moot point since he won’t hit the market.
However, if he did, the Yankees would offer him more money than the Sox, just as they did with Tex.
They won’t let any prospects get in the way of their thinking on a guy as elite as Mauer.
I think the Yankees like Aceves in the role he was in last year. He was really good at it.
Bad News LoHud-
It turns out after 3 weeks of complaining I don’t feel right, I have a massive sinus infection that required 4 medicines. One of which is a steroid.
Therefore, I am removing myself from the Yankee 40-man roster for the time being so I do not get suspensed for PEDs.
Thank you very much for your understanding
SJ, I also think the point is moo (as Joey would say)
Erica,
No worries. Go see Dr. Galea. He’s got some good stuff and will get you back on your feet in a few days and you will pass every drug test.
If it worked for Tiger, it can work for you!
Erica
It is to your credit that you have admitted your PED use before any sleazy reporters could break the story
Erica, we don’t have testing in place as of yet. Just don’t tell Jose Canseco what you’re up to.
the sox will offer mauer a billion dollars to play there… his hit spreads are tailor made for fenway.

mauer won’t make it to FA.
Mauer would be great on any team but I think it would be good for Baseball if he stayed in Minnesota and played for his hometown the rest of his career
Erica – Best wishes. Feel better soon.

Thats the scary part. I have been fully functional and still working 60 hours a week for the last 3 weeks. I had no idea I was that sick. The doctor yelled at me for not being there two and a half weeks ago.
However, the steroid is apparently going to make me very hungry and hyper. Which for anyone that knows me- is a very scary thought
Bronx, no need to fear what the Sox do as long as the Yankees remain good and you trust them. If the Sox get Gonzalez, it’s because they need him – the same way the Yanks got Tex, AJ and CC.
As the Florida weather has yet again let us down and the only thing we have is another simulated game to keep us going….
I’ll play devil’s advocate and stoke the Mauer fires a little bit for the excitable crowd.
Sorry in advance to level-headed.
http://content.usatoday.com/co.....an-mauer/1
M, I really don’t think there is a competition. I think it’s all for show…..and unless Phil and Joba BOTH crap out, it’s one or the other. I’m glad the Yankees don’t make their decisions by what mediots say. Aceves, Mitre and Gaudin are not the future of this organization. Not only that, but a good Phil or Joba are much better than all of them. I like Gaudin, but he’s merely ok – I like him in the pen. I don’t care for Mitre, and even if he lives up to whatever potential he has, he’s not very good. Aceves may or may not be a good starter, but he certainly doesn’t have the potential that Joba or Phil have; he’d be a back end guy.
It’s interesting, but per the papers, it seems like it’s all about Joba, Joba Joba. If Joba doesn’t get the #5 spot, it won’t just be because he pitched poorly, it will be because Phil pitched well. I think the media really just wants to kill the Yankees for supposedly ruining him or making the wrong decisions with him.
I can’t see Mauer hitting FA……..
I hope the Yankees IFA signings are not affected by the Newman situation.
I also don’t think it’s fair to say Phil would have F’d up if he doesn’t master the change by the time ST ends. I’m sure Joe doesn’t expect that – I think he’s just hoping it’s at least a workable pitch for him.
Feel better Erica! I’ve had a few sinus infections-they’re not fun.
Erica,
I can tell you from recent experience that the steroid can also make you irritable.
I was on high doses four times a day for five days and it did increase my appetite as well.
Lots of bad side effects but they do work pretty well.
I guess that’s why they do serve a purpose in medicine.
Erica
Google “neti pot”. Very effective sinus infection relief and future prevention.
New post with Pettitte audio.
You lefty? Get an agent and start shopping yourself to some MLB teams. There are some teams out there that could use a steroid-enhanced slugger.
New Post: Pettitte no-hits the Phillies
Oops, M – You didn’t say that. However, to be honest, Phil blowing the change is the only way I can see that he F’s this up (doesn’t mean he’ll win the spot, just that I don’t expect him to be awful). Even if the kids struggle, one of them should be the 5th starter.
“Bronx, no need to fear what the Sox do as long as the Yankees remain good and you trust them”
It’s only a baseball-related fear which actually scores kinda low on my overall fear-o-meter.
It’s probably smaller than the fear that the MTA will make good on their proposal to kill the “W” train but greater than my fear that killer bees will finally make their way to NY.
