Ohhh thank the Lord the power in my house is back on and I have internet again! We lost power around 5pm, and at around 4 in the morning I was woken up to flashing blinking lights. UGGGG. What is going on with this weather lately?

Is the game televised today? I need some baseball…

    Morning all.

Great article about K. Long in the last post. Love Posada’s quote.

I’m rooting for Marcus Thames to get the job. For no particular reason. Or maybe because he was a Yankee player before.

It’s thundering here in central NJ. Looks like another beautiful day. The shade of grey is so depressing!

Decided not to make the drive to LI today.

I think the 5th rotation spot discussions here are pretty darn good. It will be really interesting to see how it ends up. I like that there is this “mystery” in Yankees camp this spring.

I guess we’re about at the point in ST where we’ll start to see things taking shape. The pitchers going a little longer into games; the regulars starting as a group more often. Next Saturday we’re headed to Orlando for vacation, and when we come back it’ll be one week before opening day. Finally!

I only lost power for an hour and a half. What did you do for all that time????

  5. NYY626 March 14th, 2010 at 10:14 am

    Thanks TO!

    Erica –

A power line fell on the house across the street from me, so thats why my power was out for so long. I was supposed to go into the city last night to meet up with my old college roommate, but there was no way I was going to take the subway (imagine if the subway lost power??? how scary would that be!). So basically I read a book with a flashlight for about 2 hours lol. I think I fell asleep around 10ish.

Thankfully everything is working again though :)

“Sounds like we might see the Yankees actual lineup on Tuesday, almost certainly with Robinson Cano batting fifth.”

Love to see that Joe G is following my line of thought of going with a lineup of

    Jeter – R
    Johnson – L
    Tex – S
    Arod – R
    Cano – L
    Posada – S
    Granderson – L
    Swisher – S
    Gardner – L or Winn – S

That would be R,L,S,R,L,S,L,S,L or S

With a talent like Cano who makes contact frequently, has a high average, has increasing power, tons of hits and doubles and is entering his prime at 27 this season about time the Yankees ask him to step it up big time. Yes he has issues with men on base, but it is up to him to better that this season.

I predict a season of 30+ HR and 100+ RBI for Cano this coming season.

    ++++++++++++++

Doreen, Marcus is going to have to step his game up so far he has not done anything for a guy fighting for a job. I was expecting more from him in Spring. A job is there to be had but its like some of these guys aren’t hungry and thirsty enough to grab it.

All of these bubble guys need to be performing like Aceves to get their roster spots. So far neither Hoffman nor Thames are impressing for that last bench spot.

Subway + No Power = Erica’s Worst Nightmare

I was trying to watch TV around 4:30, but my power kept flickering and my cable box would reboot everytime which made DVR watching tricky. I decided to take a nap and woke up to an outtage.

I lit candles, chatted with my neighbors, then came back inside to try to find something to eat. I was eating a lovely salad by candlelight when the lights came back on

If Cano is going to be the superstar everyone thinks he could be then he needs to embrace the 5th spot and succeed. Batting behind Arod and in front of Posada isn’t the worst spot in the world. It’s time for Cano to get to the level of Utley. There’s no reason he can’t, he has power, great hands, can hit leftys, he just needs too do it with runners in scoring position. Superstars don ‘t bat 7th and hide at the bottom of the order. It’s time to put up or shut up for Cano. I think he can do it, he certainly has the talent to.

  14. blake March 14th, 2010 at 10:44 am

Twins need a closer, if they called up Cashman and said we’ll give you Aaron Hicks for Joba I wonder what the Yankees would say? Not that that would ever happen cause its a very un-twins like thing to do but I wonder if Cashman would make that deal.

  15. Doreen - 2010 GTLU March 14th, 2010 at 10:54 am

    Fran -

GTLU is scheduled for Tuesday. But I think the real game is “Beat Chad/Sam to Posting Lineup” –

  16. Doreen - 2010 GTLU March 14th, 2010 at 10:56 am

    blake -

At this stage, I don’t think Joba is on anyone’s radar as a closer. He’s never done it. Even the Yankees would be using him as a set-up man if he doesn’t start.

  17. Bronx Jeers March 14th, 2010 at 10:59 am

Chad wrote an excellent article on Kevin Long in case you haven’t read it.

He certainly has been getting a lot of good press lately. The players really seem to trust him and the results don’t lie.

  18. SJ44 March 14th, 2010 at 11:02 am

    No reason to trade low.

You never trade young pitching unless you are getting a known commodity and you can withstand the loss.

That’s what they did in the Vazquez deal.

Hicks is a prospect. Good or not, until he proves it he is an unknown.

You don’t sacrifice young pitching who have succeeded at the major league level, for prospects.

  19. blake March 14th, 2010 at 11:04 am

    Doreen,
I actually think most other teams in baseball see Joba as a reliever future closer and the reason he would be a Set up guy for the Yankees is because they have the greatest closer in history in Rivera. Just brain stormin a bit. Almost zero percent chance of something like that happening. I just wonder what cash would say if it did.

    Doreen,

What time do you start taking entries? ;)

  21. SJ44 March 14th, 2010 at 11:09 am

    He would say no.

He gets those kind of offers for Hughes and Chamberlain all the time.

The mantra for a large market GM is, never trade knowns for unknowns.

    Re: Cano….

Only way you will know if he is up to the task is to put him in the 5 hole for the first 30 games and see what happens.

Don’t panic if he has struggles, don’t listen to fan babble, and don’t move him around.

After 30 games, you will have enough of a sample size of the quality of his AB’s with RISP to know if he can handle it.

  22. Doreen - 2010 GTLU March 14th, 2010 at 11:20 am

    Fran -

I have offered to take GTLU entries from the night before, but have had no takers. :)

    blake -

Not arguing with you at all. Just suggesting that the Twins need a bona fide, seasoned closer to take Nathan’s place. :)

I agree about putting Cano in the 5 hole and leaving him there and not getting antsy on a game by game basis if he struggles. But I don’t think I’d look for 30 HRs from him; 25 and anything else is gravy.

  23. pistol pete March 14th, 2010 at 11:20 am

As long as we’re kicking trades around that won’t happen how about Joba or Phil, plus Johnson, Montero, and a couple prospects to the Twins for Joe Mauer. It gives the Twins a future closer, a good bat, and a future allstar catcher while giving the Yankees the best player in the game. The Yanks would move Posada to DH and score 1000 runs while not losing any starters. It would cost the Yanks about 10 m more this year and signing Mauer to a heavy extension. I’d do it in aminute, do you think the Twins or Yankees would.

  24. Bronx Jeers March 14th, 2010 at 11:25 am

I think the stars are aligned in Cano’s favor regarding the 5 hole. He’s certainly got the physical gifts.

And the other 5th spot the Yanks are looking to fill? I sort of feel bad for Aceves as I think he would be a reliable option but ultimately will be passed over.

  25. Y's Guy March 14th, 2010 at 11:25 am

i dont see the yankees starting the season with joba, phil or aceves in aaa. these guys are major leaguers now and important parts of the major league club. its just a question of who gets which role and joba as the set-up man just seems to be the best option.

but there is really no reason to decide yet, they will each start 3 more times in ST.

imo its still phil’s spot to lose.

Doreen, I agree about enjoying the mystery! I think it’s awesome. Ultimately the Yankees will give the 5th spot over to the person they think gives the team the best chance of winning. I am thinking they will backstock maybe two potentials in the event the winning contender doesn’t produce sufficiently. We’re very lucky to be dealing with that kind of talent this ST!!!

    May the best pitcher win.

    :)

Y’s Guy – while it may be Phil’s to lose, he just may lose it. Aceves has really stepped up to the plate – so to speak. I don’t know that you waste that kind of talent on potential long relief or potential spot starts. Unless Phil answers the call it’s going to be a tough decision. And I don’t want to write Joba off because people still believe in him. And then there’s Sergio Mitre.

Seriously, an embarassment of riches finally, in terms of potential pitching.

I remain open-minded about what is to come. I think this is awesome.

Finally, you people in NJ and NY must be terrible sinners to have this weather wrought upon you! :)

I am a real winter person and I can’t tell you how disappointed I was that you guys ended up with all the snow and we got totally screwed. Every time there was a storm coming, you got killed and we got nada. We are getting some residuals of that rain and wind, but certainly nothing dramatic.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++

I think that is the key for him to hit the way he does when men are not on base. I think at 27 this is going to be his monster season of production for us. Like you said its up to Cano to go out and get it done. He is aware of his role in this lineup.

A consistent 3,4,5 for the Yankees of Tex, Arod, Cano is gong to be terrific in the heart of the order. Considering Posada will be rested quite a lot this coming season given his age and to keep him fresh.

Now is the time for Cano to tranlate his high average, increasing HR power, league leading hits and doubles into RBI’s.

CANO CANNOT HIT WITH RUNNERS ON BASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sure, give him 30 more games to just reaffirm what we’ve already seen last season. Bases empty, he’s great. RISP…he chokes like a dog. And, yes, you can call it choking because his whole approach seems to change. And Arod will get even fewer good pitches to hit with Cano an easy out behind him.

  32. Macfan March 14th, 2010 at 11:46 am

The thing is Aceves is like a rubber arm, Girardi knows he can go to him if a starter has a short outing and really have him bridge those 4,5,6th innings if a starter is knocked out of the game.

Aceves in those spots will give you quality innings and keep you in the game as opposed to adding on more runs, enabling you to have a chance to battle back in the game.

Also he can pitch multiple innings, 1 inning or 1 batter if need be.

    I see the rotation as

    Sabathia – L
    Burnett – R
    Pettitte – L
    Vazquez – R
    Hughes – R

    Gaudin – R / Mitre – R
    Park – R
    Aceves – R
    Robertson – R
    Marte – L
    Joba – R
    Rivera – R

And is there some holy grail out there that says that cannot change at all whatsoever and will always remain the same.

I wouldn’t worry about Arod getting good pitches or not, Arod is a slugger that knows the strike zone, its not like he will be chasing junk.

Also your assertion doesn’t take into account that

Jeter, Johnson, Tex all who get on base at a high rate will be in front of Arod in the order. I want to see the team willing to walk Arod and put men in scoring position, with Jeter, Johnson and Tex constantly on the bases, given their high OBP.

Here’s the psychological component that is going to push Robby into a new person. His buddy Melky is gone and that’s a reminder that no spot is a guarantee with the Yankees. Look for him to concentrate even more this season.

  35. Manunited2512 March 14th, 2010 at 12:25 pm

I personally like Cano in the mid to end parts of the batting lineup. He proved last year that he was a solid guy in these spots. I also prefer a guy like Cano who has great speed on the bases and a clutch bat that hits for power in these spots. It is almost as if you have a leadoff guy in the later parts of your lineup. There spells trouble for pitchers who have him leading off the inning. It is almost like two Jeters in the lineup. Let’s face it, Cano is great for leading off the inning as well as going deep on the first few pitches of the inning.
