What were you doing at that age?

Montero and Romine

What were you doing when you were 20 or 21 years old? Were you lounging outside of the Yankees bullpen watching a spring training game from the sideline?

It must be good to be Jesus Montero and Austin Romine. That’s them during Sunday’s game in Bradenton.

On this day of practically nothing in Tampa, here are a few links and notes from around baseball.

• There’s a story on the Mariners site about Rule 5 pick Kanekoa Texeira, who was taken out of the Yankees organization. He has allowed one earned run through five innings this spring. He has also walked three and allowed four hits. Texeira is in the mix for a big league job.

• Speaking of Rule 5 picks out of the Yankees system: Lefty Zach Kroenke has pitched four times for the Diamondbacks. He has a 9.82 ERA that is inflated by three earned runs in two-thirds of an inning on Wednesday. Otherwise, he’s been solid: Three hits and no walks through three innings.

• Speaking of the Diamondbacks, Ian Kennedy has thrown five scoreless innings for Arizona. He’s found some success with his new two-seamer.

• Speaking of traded Yankees pitchers, Edwar Ramirez made his Rangers debut on Friday in a B game. He allowed two hits and struck out a batter. “I’m ready to throw strikes,” he said. Then a swift Texas breeze came and knocked him over.

• If former Yankees aren’t your cup of tea, check out Cliff Corcoran’s breakdown of the Yankees spring training to date. As always, it’s great stuff over at Bronx Banter.

yankees should start aceves and put hughes and joba in the pen.

  2. Betsy - Romine wasn't built in a day March 15th, 2010 at 8:20 pm

Cool pic, Chad. I hope the Yanks keep Romine until the very last, so he can stay around Girardi and Pena. How has he looked behind the plate?

  3. xxx March 15th, 2010 at 8:25 pm

spring training is serious business for Cliff Lee.

  4. Carl March 15th, 2010 at 8:44 pm

at 20-21 I was reading lohud

  5. Rich in NJ March 15th, 2010 at 8:58 pm

If the Yankees put Joba and Hughes in the pen, they’re morons.

  6. Zach S March 15th, 2010 at 9:02 pm

He’s found some success with his new two-seamer.
    *******************************************************

Plus, it’s the NL which should help him out a bit. Glad to see he’s doing well though.

  7. Nick in SF March 15th, 2010 at 9:04 pm

The bullpen would be sick! Let ‘em cover like 3 innings between ‘em, or 2 each once every 3 games or something.

The other team would know they had to score by the 5th inning… they’d be gripping their bats tightly with all that pressure!

  8. MTU March 15th, 2010 at 9:12 pm

    No coverage of Tuesday’s
    game ?

  9. randy l. March 15th, 2010 at 9:16 pm

looks like the nats might take Stephen Strasburg north with the big league team.

saw that livan is still part of their rotation.

if livan follows strasburg in the rotation he’s going to look so slow that every pitch will look like a bugs bunny one .

if strasburg follows livan ,hitters will be looking at strasburg getting ready for the pitch and the ball will already be by them.

those two will be the odd couple of baseball.

of course livan will win more games in 2010 than strasburg :)

What were you doing when you were 20 or 21 years old?

  11. murphydog March 15th, 2010 at 9:24 pm

It was a rhetorical question. Nah, I pressed the submit button by accident.

I was lounging around Fordham’s Rose Hill campus in the Bronx, finishing up college and working in a supermarket, when I was 20 and 21. At least I was in the same Boro as the Yankees when I was that age.

  12. m March 15th, 2010 at 9:42 pm

    xxx,

Was Cliff Lee’s beanball in spring training bush league?

  13. RalphieD (OPPC) March 15th, 2010 at 9:46 pm

At 20 im posting this post…must be nice to be in big league spring training, for the yankees no less….ahhh the envy that i am feeling at this moment…

  14. xxx March 15th, 2010 at 10:04 pm

I think it was, M. Like Reynolds said, Cliff Lee’s control is too good for it to be anything but intentional.

Buzzing someone’s nogging in spring training is 100% bush.

Did Snyder say anything to Lee when they collided earlier in the game? Was there a cheap shot in there? Something obviously set him off, but up and in isn’t the answer.

  15. m March 15th, 2010 at 10:13 pm

    xxx,

    http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....id=4998218

This is the full story. The earlier one didn’t have Reynolds’ comments, but did say that Lee’s pitches came after words were exchanged earlier in the game.

I guess Lee didn’t take his meds today. :P

  16. Nick in SF March 15th, 2010 at 10:41 pm

No hothead bush Lee in 2011! Change course, Cashman, develop Phil and Joba for the rotation, stat!

  17. Rob B March 15th, 2010 at 10:42 pm

When I was 20-21, I was walking around in the pouring rain in Chile, completely cut off from the baseball world.

Those guys definitely have it better. :)

  18. burrman March 15th, 2010 at 10:49 pm

question…..i like sergio mitre…what do you see his role on the team this year being. i just read hes leading the team in Ks, thats good to hear. do you think he has a shot at the #5 spot? if he goes to the bullpen how do you think he will fare?

  19. pistol pete March 15th, 2010 at 11:01 pm

There may not be room for Mitre, it’s he or Gaudin, I don’t think there’s room for both and if Hughes gets the 5th spot which I think he will Gaudin is better suited for the bullpen. Joba belongs at AAA but I’m not sure the Yankees have the guts to do it. Joba’s not even close to the same guy he was when he came up and I’m not sure if he gets better, I certainly hope so but it makes me nervous.

  20. David in Cal March 15th, 2010 at 11:41 pm

Mo, Aceves, Joba or Phil, Marte, Park, Robertson are six pretty certain spots in the bull pen. Barring injury, that leaves one spot for Gaudin, Mitre, Logan, Melancon, Hirsh, or Ring. Seems not an easy choice. Gaudin pitched well for the Yanks last year. He and Mitre can be a long man/starter. Logan and Ring and lefties. Melancon and Hirsh looked good this spring.

Last year the Yanks ran out of pitchers, because they didn’t have inning eaters in pen. I think Girardi will want to avoid last year’s problem, so he’ll keep Gaudin or Mitre.

  21. MTU March 16th, 2010 at 12:08 am

I know I am not the only person who feels this way.

But I’ve got a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach about this 5th starter thing.

We all have to accept the outcome.

But it’s likely to nag at me for a while.

And leave lingering doubts, at least in my mind.

I don’t like that prospect. I don’t like it one bit.

Before a young starter is relegated to the BP for good wouldn’t you want to be sure they belonged there ?

I want to be sure because I don’t think there is any going back.

Sorry, but that’s how I’m feelin’ right now.

The decision is coming soon. I don’t think it’s gonna turn out the way I would have hoped. :(

  22. CR9 March 16th, 2010 at 12:12 am

Lee is an arrogant, classless punk.

His behavior during Game 1 of the 2009 World Series showed his classless arrogance.

And the two commentators who I shall not name are the only ones more classless, for laughing at Lee’s antics.

  23. m March 16th, 2010 at 12:27 am

    CR9,

Wait. Lee is classless. But it’s more classless to laugh at his antics?

Are you talking November or today?

  24. m March 16th, 2010 at 12:33 am

    Never mind.

I thought you said commenters. I think you’re talking about Buck & McCarver. They are nameless no more!

  25. Brandon Awesome (B/c I'm more AWESOME than RAW w/ no Miz) March 16th, 2010 at 12:44 am

    Is Randy Winn still here?

  26. Rich in NJ March 16th, 2010 at 12:46 am

    Too bad Lee doesn’t bat.

  27. Yeah March 16th, 2010 at 1:15 am

When Brett Gardner was 21, he was not playing pro ball. Good old days.

  28. Rich in NJ March 16th, 2010 at 1:18 am

What’s wrong with playing college ball at 21?

  29. E-gawa March 16th, 2010 at 1:28 am

Leave Lee alone. He’s a future Yankee :)

  30. Yeah March 16th, 2010 at 1:54 am

Absolutely nothing. In fact, I’d be ecstatic if Gardner resumed his amateur status.

  31. Rich in NJ March 16th, 2010 at 2:04 am

When they find someone better than Gardner, fine. I don’t think Winn or Thames are at this late point in their respective careers.

  32. blake March 16th, 2010 at 7:26 am

I think the 3rd outfielder is Gardner’s job to lose and thus far he hasn’t done anything to lose it. However I have questions on whether he can hit big league pitching on an everyday basis. They will give him a chance out of ST but if he’s hitting .215 after the first month or so they will turn to Winn who is a better bitter and has been a regular for years. I think this is likely a one year job anyway so I doubt the leash will be very long with any of them..whoever is playing best will play.

  33. blake March 16th, 2010 at 7:37 am

    MTU,
You can never be 100% sure but for them to send Joba to the pen for good they will have to be pretty certain in their minds that’s where he belongs. Many people in baseball are leaning that way and if I had to guess so are the Yankees. I would love for Joba to remain a starter but he’s 24 now and at some point you just have to pick a lane with a guy and keep them there. Continueing to try to develop him as a starter if he’s showing no signs of progress (I don’t know if that’s the case) is just wasting years of his career IMO.

  34. upstate kate March 16th, 2010 at 7:43 am

    Blake
I agree, I think the LF will be replaced next year. Who are you leaning towards? Crawford? Werth? someone else?

  35. blake March 16th, 2010 at 7:50 am

    Kate,
As of now Crawford because I think he could slide into the #2 spot in the lineup and give them speed and the best defensive LFer in baseball.

They have a right handed power bat on the way with Montero and I think Crawford will fill needs a little better than Werth. That could change though by next offseason.

  36. upstate kate March 16th, 2010 at 8:03 am

I like Crawford myself. Some on this board seem to worry about his years playing on artificial turf.

  37. Bronx Jeers March 16th, 2010 at 8:14 am

    Kanekoa Texeira:

“I like this group of guys and the staff is nice, too,” he said. “I would rather stay here…..But if I go back [to the Yankees], I would have to shave and cut my hair.”

  38. Comet March 16th, 2010 at 8:15 am

Hey Upstate Kate: Good to see you here. Who is your favourite Yankee all time? How is your weather today. I think it is Crawford in left next year.

    Regards,

    C

  39. upstate kate March 16th, 2010 at 8:17 am

    Comet
all time fav is Ron Guidry
our weather is beautiful, sunny and supposed to reach the 50s today, snow is melting fast

  40. Betsy - Romine wasn't built in a day March 16th, 2010 at 8:18 am

Ok, lol…The guy would rather stay with the Ms because he’d have to cut his hair with the Yankees? Let him stay – what a joke.

  41. Comet March 16th, 2010 at 8:20 am

Kate our snow is gone. Guidry was very special. I have always liked Mickey Mantle.

Sun is out here this morning.

At 21, Apr 67 was along the Mekong River, wishing I could get baseball. But all is well as I’m enjoying my Yankees.

  43. Kathleenz March 16th, 2010 at 10:25 am

I used to have the same feeling about Edwar every time I watched him pitch! LOL, Chad!

  44. Tank March 16th, 2010 at 1:02 pm

    agree
