Gardner gets the start in center

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Mar 16, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Today’s lineup against the Astros, as promised, looks a lot like the expected Opening Day lineup.

Derek Jeter SS
Nick Johnson DH
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Jorge Posada C
Curtis Granderson LF
Nick Swisher RF
Brett Gardner CF

———

Also, my mistake in the morning Today in The Journal News post. Wednesday’s game in Clearwater is a day game. It’s Thursday’s home game against the Rays that’s at night. Sorry about that.

What time is the game today? TV?

  3. m March 16th, 2010 at 1:20 pm

    Chad,

Does Girardi read the blog and the GTLU entries before posting the lineup?

  4. jennifer March 16th, 2010 at 1:21 pm

I just looked on Yankees.com It isn’t on tv. I thought it was on. I am so disappointed. :-(

I was so close to a GTLU win. lol

  7. Frank March 16th, 2010 at 1:22 pm

    Who’s pitching?

  8. Chad Jennings March 16th, 2010 at 1:22 pm

My guess is that Girardi does not check the GTLU guesses before posting the lineup. I’d honestly be surprised if he knew I had a blog. I know Cashman and a lot of the players read it regularly, but I don’t think Girardi is among our regulars!

  9. m March 16th, 2010 at 1:25 pm

    Tex’s friend,

I wouldn’t read too much into it as far as opening day.

Girardi’s probably still taking a look at Granderson in LF. Did I see a quote by him talking about trying to get the best alignment? Girardi’s not afraid of making bold changes, but we’ll see.

  10. jennifer March 16th, 2010 at 1:25 pm

The players and Cash read it? I guess we better be on our best behavior, :-)

  11. Mark March 16th, 2010 at 1:26 pm

Any Yankee fan that doesn’t know what players are secure, marginal, or on the bubble, have been hiding under a rock.

  12. jennifer March 16th, 2010 at 1:26 pm

On that thing worries me about Brett in center is how he goes back on the ball. He seems to have trouble with that and gets turned around a lot.

  13. Holden March 16th, 2010 at 1:27 pm

    Hi Chad,

Respectfully, how do you know Cashman is a regular reader of your blog?

    Thanks.

  14. Jerkface March 16th, 2010 at 1:27 pm

    I am Brian Cashman.

  15. m March 16th, 2010 at 1:27 pm

    Chad,

Don’t be so modest. And don’t underestimate the lengths Girardi will go to in order to win. He’s a competita, that one.

  16. ScottMiester March 16th, 2010 at 1:28 pm

Gardner will be fine in center…at least they got some speed out there this year in Left to cover him :D

  17. jennifer March 16th, 2010 at 1:29 pm

Jerkface- I mean Mr. Cashman. Very under the radar name. No one would have ever guessed it was you. :-P

  18. Jerkface March 16th, 2010 at 1:30 pm

On that thing worries me about Brett in center is how he goes back on the ball. He seems to have trouble with that and gets turned around a lot

All the more reason to give him time at the position. Although I suspect the world series play is clouding your memory. He has gone back on balls fine in the past, and made more than the average number of plays on deep fly balls compared to other centerfielders.

  19. tex's friend March 16th, 2010 at 1:33 pm

im not worried. i actually think gardner is better in cf than lf. i believe granderson will be fine either way. still would rather have melky out there than gardner though.

Feeling kind of stupid here, what does GTLU stand for?

  21. NYYROC March 16th, 2010 at 1:35 pm

AJ is supposed to get the start, followed by Hughes. I have previously read that Marte and Mo might get in today or tomorrow.

    Mike, it’s Guess The Lineup

    =======

If lineup is one word. Shouldnt it be GTL?

Why is Gardner playing centerfield? He has been attrocious at the plate and its easier to replace a left fielder than a centerfielder. Keep Granderson in center getting as much reps as possible. Gardner might be gone after the first couple months of the year if he doesnt learn how to hit a ball past the infield.

  27. m March 16th, 2010 at 1:38 pm

    Jerkface,

FYI – If you click on my tag it will take you to my blog, such as it is, and the GTLU Rules are listed there on the right-hand side – permanently. :)

Once the regular season begins, I will not accept lineups w/o positions listed next to players. As Erica noted, and as today’s lineup shows, the position is as important as the batting order. :)

And it’s called GTLU because Erica made up the game, and whoever makes up the game gets to name it! :)

I read the line-up and my first thought is: Cano is the key to making this line-up work. He needs to drive in runs like Matsui could. He needs to be patient, wait for his pitch and be the .300 hitter he has been.
I would not be shocked if he excels and bats 5th all season. I also would not be surprised if he struggles in April and is dropped down in the order for a short time

  52. S.o.S. March 16th, 2010 at 1:53 pm

  77. XLJ March 16th, 2010 at 2:12 pm

Yankees do not need much from Gardner with his bat. If he just plays great defense. Steal a few bases, sacrafices and move runnners over I would be happy with that.

There lineup is loaded. Cano will have an mvp caliber season. Yanks will win over 100 games with no problem. Prepare for an offensive orgy like Michael Kay says.

    New post.

Also, I don’t think they’ve decided to do anything permanently about the outfield alignment. Today it’s Gardner in center, but I don’t think that necessarily means he’ll be there on opening day.

Jerkface, today’s lineup is basically how it’s going to be for the rest of the year, so I assume Gardner in CF now means he’s there permanently. I think it’s wrong to move Granderson to LF.

    - I don’t get it – they’ve decided to put Gardner in CF permanently over Granderson? Sigh.

    - Where has this been said? Also Gardner is very good in CF, and Granderson is very good all over.

Granderson and Gardner will probably switch quite a bit. If one has a day off, you don’t want the other to have not played in center for weeks.

Who said it was permanent? At this point it’s only 2 games.

I honestly don’t think it makes much of a difference. If they think it makes them stronger defensively then so be it.

In the military we had A LOT of acronyms. There are no specific rules for creating them. Proper spelling has nothing to do with which letters are includes, it is up to the creator of the acronym. For example, I worked on a program with the USAF & NASA known as SPADVOS. SPADVOS stands for Spaceborne Direct Viewing Optical System.

    FUNNY MEMORY:

I came up with a tongue-in-cheek one of my own that always gave the astronauts a laugh. The program was officially called VFT, which was Visual Function Tester and I was fortunate to get the astronauts to use it on quite a few shuttle missions. My opening briefing slide to the astronauts was for SPACEBALLS (as in the spoof movie) for Space Calibrated Eyeballs. The astronauts loved the spoofing and it was a great icebreaker.

If Gardy proves he is an everyday player then he will likely play CF.
Joe said that it is as much who is the better LF as it is who is the better CF.
If Gardy is a platoon or bench guy, Grandy will be in CF because you don’t want to keep switching them daily. Grandy may be like Melky in that it does not matter all that much where he plays. Gardy may not be all that good in LF.
Time will tell, but I bet Grandy will be the CF on opening night in Boston.
Gardy, Winn, Hoffman, and Thames need to kick it up a notch and win spots…

How will the Yankees simulate the wall in LF? :P

Seriously, neither one has much experience with it.
