After taking Monday off, the Yankees resume their spring training schedule tonight against the Astros. The Yankees are expected to use their opening day lineup, and the results are beginning to matter as the Yankees enter the decision-making part of spring.

This is the Yankees first night game of the spring, and their first of three night games this week: Tonight, Wednesday against the Phillies and Friday’s split-squad against Tampa Bay.

Do you want to submit that lineup in GTLU today? :)

  7. upstate kate March 16th, 2010 at 8:41 am

ok, I missed the boat, and everyone is picking what I would have…so just to be a little bit different:

    SS Jeter
    DH Nick the Quick
    1B Tex
    3B Alex
    2B Robbie
    C Posada
    CF Granderson
    RF Swish

  8. Doreen - 2010 GTLU March 16th, 2010 at 8:42 am

    BBFan -

In the regular season, I’ll need positions (you too MTU, if you play). :)

Most are self-explanatory, but can I assume you want Grandy in CF and Gardner in LF?

  9. MTU March 16th, 2010 at 8:44 am

    2010 rotation:

    CC
    AJ
    Andy
    JV
    Hughes

    BP

    Mo
    Marte
    Joba
    Robertson
    Aceves
    Park
    Gaudin

    Bench

    Cervelli
    Pena
    Winn
    Thames

  10. MTU March 16th, 2010 at 8:49 am

    Doreen-

    Understood.

    Grandy CF
    GGBG LF

    for now.

  11. Rich in NJ March 16th, 2010 at 8:53 am

With Park on the roster, I would rather have a LOOGY than Gaudin in the pen.

  12. MTU March 16th, 2010 at 8:56 am

    Rich-

I understand that but I can’t see them letting Gaudin slip away.

  13. MTU March 16th, 2010 at 9:03 am

    Scranton :

    Hirsch
    Igawa
    Nova
    Z-Mac :)
    Garcia

  14. Rich in NJ March 16th, 2010 at 9:03 am

    MTU

There’s a reason that they got Gaudin from SD for virtually nothing.

  15. blake March 16th, 2010 at 9:03 am

    Kate,
From the last thread, yea the turf is a little concerning but if he isn’t hurt and is still running well I don’t think it would keep me from signing him.

  16. MTU March 16th, 2010 at 9:04 am

Scranton Lineup (Not in order) :

    1B Miranda
    2B Russo
    SS Nunez
    3B Laird
    LF Curtis
    CF Golson
    RF Winfree
    C Montero :)

  17. MTU March 16th, 2010 at 9:07 am

    Rich-

I like Gaudin and hope they keep him. If they need to move someone my vote is for Mitre.

  18. sunny615 March 16th, 2010 at 9:11 am

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c.....index.html

Yankees are #1 with CC, Arod, Curtis Granderson, and Tex

    2. Phillies (Chase Utley, Roy Halladay, Ryan Howard, Jimmy Rollins)

    3. Mets (David Wright, Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran, Jason Bay)

    4. Red Sox (Dustin Pedroia, Victor Martinez, Jon Lester, Josh Beckett)

    5. Cardinals (Albert Pujols, Matt Holliday, Adam Wainwright, Yadier Molina)

Funny thing is, they’d also be at #8 with Jeter, Posada, Cano and Javier Vazquez

  19. Rich in NJ March 16th, 2010 at 9:11 am

    MTU

Mitre wasn’t on your proposed roster, so isn’t that a false choice?

  20. teddy March 16th, 2010 at 9:12 am

    Jeter
    Johnson
    Tex
    A-Rod
    Cano
    Posada
    Grandy
    Swish
    GGBG

  21. MTU March 16th, 2010 at 9:14 am

    Rich-

I guess so. Now that you know though, Mitre disappears before Gaudin, right ?

  22. Rick March 16th, 2010 at 9:15 am

The Hughes / Joba question continues to get beaten to death but the fact remains that they’re both not going to the bullpen. Phil is in the lead as the #5 starter and if he wins it, will still need some limited innings out of the pen in April with the schedule being what it is.
Joba’s next 3 exhibition outings are critical for what role he’ll have.

  23. Rich in NJ March 16th, 2010 at 9:18 am

    MTU

I’ll grant that point despite my personal feelings.

I’m merely saying that I think it would be a mistake to keep Gaudin over a second LH reliever.

  24. Noreaster (How do you like me now?) March 16th, 2010 at 9:18 am

    Jeter – SS
    Johnson – DH
    Tex – 1B
    ARod – 3B
    Cano – 2B
    Posada – C
Granderson – CF (But I’d rather have him in left)
    Swisher – RF
    Gardner – LF

    Cano’s line for the year, .326, 28HR, 105RBI, .365OBP, .535SLG

  25. MTU March 16th, 2010 at 9:18 am

    Rick-

    I think it’s only 2 more starts a piece not 3.

And you’re absolutely right, the next starts are the ones they are really gonna look at.

  26. Noreaster (How do you like me now?) March 16th, 2010 at 9:19 am

MTU, I think I saw a couple of days ago that you hike, if so, where and what do you hike? I’m knocking off the 4000 footers in NH (I’ve got 17 of 48 done).

  27. MTU March 16th, 2010 at 9:19 am

    Rich-

Logan can be sent to AAA can’t he ? Kept in reserve.

    swb roster

montero, rivera, miranda, vazquez, russo, corona, nunez, curtis, gorecki, golson, winfree and weber

mcallister, nova, igawa, hirsh, sanchez, melancon, duff, ring, logan, segovia, albaladejo and whelan

however, with horne, kontos and others rehabbing, expect to see the roster churned quite thoroughly throughout the season.

  30. Rich in NJ March 16th, 2010 at 9:24 am

    MTU

Maybe, but why? If the idea is go north with the best roster, why not do that?

  31. MTU March 16th, 2010 at 9:27 am

    Rich-

I just don’t think they’ll take logan over Gaudin, and I believe that is the choice, because if they do so they loose Gaudin.

I don’t think they want that even though Logan might make good sense.

Logan can be stashed at AAA. They lose Gaudin the other way.

    JMO

  32. Rich in NJ March 16th, 2010 at 9:40 am

    MTU

You could be right, but I think there is a reason that Gaudin pitched 1 inning in the postseason. He isn’t good, and now he’s overpaid.

  33. Noreaster March 16th, 2010 at 9:41 am

Sounds great MTU, I’ve done the Grand Canyon a couple of times. Very different from the East Coast!

  34. MTU March 16th, 2010 at 9:46 am

  36. Jerkface March 16th, 2010 at 9:48 am

1 of Gaudin/Mitre is going to be kept on the roster as a long reliever. I don’t think they’d lose both of those guys, although 1 has to be traded by the end of spring I’d think. Plenty of teams hurting for starting pitching. Mitre and Gaudin have been much better than guys like Suppan, half the Mets, Gaudin could go back to the Cubs and either pitch in relief or start, etc.

    I got the bullpen as
    LOCKS
    Rivera
    Robertson
    Park
    Aceves
    Marte

2 more spots contingent on other things
    Hughes/Joba
    Gaudin/Mitre/Melancon/Logan/Ring

And if the loser of Hughes/Joba goes to AAA (my preference) its even easier to keep a LOOGY/Melancon AND 1 of Gaudin/Mitre.

Gaudin is certainly more intriguing out of the pen than Mitre, but Mitre might have the better upside, simply being a Chien Ming Wang who can strike guys out if he lives up to his stuff.

  37. upstate kate March 16th, 2010 at 9:52 am

My understanding is that Mitre is not comfortable being used out of the pen, where Gaudin doesn’t seem to care

  38. Alan March 16th, 2010 at 9:55 am

Either Gaudin or Mitre could be on the bubble ….. possibly both.
Both Aceves and Hughes can go multiple innings in the early going.
Girardi may want the extra lefthander in the bullpen. So far, Royce Ring has done nothing wrong and Boone Logan has pitched well and has options.
Adequate pitching talent at AAA as the season moves along.

  39. Noreaster March 16th, 2010 at 9:56 am

MTU, Rim to Rim in one day is crazy. I’ve hiked it twice, both times down Kaibab and up Brigth Angel. The first time I did it in one day (crazy but not rim to rim crazy) and the second time I stayed down at the Phantom Ranch.

  40. blake March 16th, 2010 at 9:58 am

I would shop Gaudin and Mitre and whichever brought the best return would be traded. Gaudin makes 3x as much money as Mitre so that could play into it. They both could be valuable as spot starters or for long relief though. I know many aren’t high on Mitre but for 800K he’s serviceable and will take the ball.

the one thing i didn’t like about the grand canyon trail is hiking back up when the mules coming down insisted on hikers standing on the outside edge of the trail when they passed you . they wouldn’t go by if a hiker was up against the safety of the wall.

when on the edge of the trail looking into empty space below , it wasn’t a great feeling knowing your life depended on a mule having control of his swaying butt so he wouldn’t knock you off.

then again the heightened senses because of the adrenaline made the view even better :)

    “Great perfume, huh ?”

i forgot about that. insult to injury.

first they make you stand on the edge and then they let you know what they think of you.

all kidding aside, i hiked down with a friend in the late 60′s while hitchhiking around the country for 6 months and spent about ten days down there. it was by far the most amazing place on the whole trip.

i’ll tell you one thing, if joba went down and back up two or three times over a week’s time , he’d be ready to begin the season.

of course the stand off between joba and a mule when joba shakes off the mule when the mule wants him to stand on the outside would be interesting :)

  51. JohnC March 16th, 2010 at 10:24 am

I do not think I saw this posted amongst the Hechevarria news, but the Yankees offered $1.5 million less than the Jays, so the Jeter thing just seems like a spin/excuse.

Gonna need some big time help from the beat writers on this game.

  57. Yankz1 March 16th, 2010 at 10:43 am

Depending on who might make the final ML cut. With the players listed, my SWB lineup would be:

    Russo 3B
    Curtis LF
    Miranda 1B/DH
    Vazquez DH/1B/3B
    Montero C/DH
    Nunez SS
    Weber RF
    Golson CF
    Corona 2B

But I still think Russo and Vazquez could make the ML bench. But that is one heck of a lineup!!!

I saw you guys talking bullpen.

I put up the 7 I thought it would be yesterday, but I think I left off Marte (Mr. Invisible).

So, it seems we need to do something with Aceves, Gaudin, Marte.

Barring any trade(s) or releases, I think this is at least in some part possible:

    -Mo
    -Joba/Phil
    -Robertson
    -Marte
    -Park
    -Mitre
    -Gaudin

Where’s Aceves you ask? He’s in the Scranton rotation, first man called up. I know people like Aceves in the Mendoza role. But I like Aceves in the mucho macho economical role he’s been playing this spring.

Park can take the short reliever role Aceves played. Mitre/Gaudin could take the long reliever role he played. And for you Melancon lovers, he could be the first reliever called up if necessary.

Ideally, you would want to trade one pitcher (my choice would be Gaudin).

Impressed with both Scranton and big league staffs.
I think the Gaudin is most likely to be shipped off. I personally like him. But as pointed out Mitre could have more upside and if a spot starter is needed he could be used in a pinch. Also, thinking of next year, he could be the new 5th starter if Joba is officially a reliever.
The only thing that could change this is the offer they may get for Mitre versus Gaudin.

There is no chance Aceves is not on the 25 man roster.

Girardi has said all Spring he’s taking the best 12 pitchers north.

Aceves is one of the best 12 pitchers on the team.

Also the best 12 pitchers is subjective. Joba has certainly not been near top 12 so far. If he doesn’t improve I wouldn’t trust him in the bullpen. But would he go north anyways because of past history?

To you hikers out there–Rocky Mountain National Park has amazing hikes even for we at or over middle age. There is nothing like a hike to a mountain lake. It does take a couple of days acclimating to the altitude so I do the easiest first.

Mitre is not exactly a good pitcher. If he has to go through waivers, I think he may very well make it. What numbers is he putting up? He had two good outings in ST (probably against kids as he’s coming in in the middle/late innings), one bad one and he was awful last year.

  84. m March 16th, 2010 at 11:16 am

    Jerkface,

Absolutely correct. Girardi (and Eiland) also said there’s a 5-way competition for the last spot in the rotation, but we know that’s in name only.

We also know that Gaudin’s not in the top 12, but he’ll probably go by virtue of contract status.

“LOL In that case, can I come along too??? ”

I will make sure that you and Robbie are front and center in the photos.

I hope you would be able to stand the excitement.

I’ll try my best to contain myself. I’m not making any promises though.

I’m no hiker, but I visited Rocky Mountain National Park a few years ago when I went on a tour of Colorado National Parks and I have to say that it’s spectacular. Actually, the whole state is ridiculously spectacular; I believe it’s considered the Switzerland of America. We were lucky in that we saw elk AND big-horn sheep….

    Betsy,

If teams believe that Mitre has fully recovered and come back all the way from Tommy John surgery, he’ll attract some attention.

I don’t care about him either way. But if he’s shown that last year (one 1 year removed) was post-surgical rust then the Yankees might want to hold on to him. They’re going to try to trade guys before releasing them anyway.

Taking your best 12 isn’t always easy. Roster considerations, contract status, and other things get in the way.

They work together on the roster.

Since he has to manage them, Girardi has a big voice on roster construction.

He loves Aceves. He isn’t going to AAA to keep Sergio Mitre on the roster. He’s a better pitcher than Mitre.

  94. Betsy -Romine wasn't built in a day March 16th, 2010 at 11:21 am

I don’t get the idea of taking the 12 best arms if one of those arms needs straightening out. If Joba is still struggling by the time ST ends, what is so wrong with sending him to AAA? The Yankees are a terrific team; they can certainly get by with Joba in AAA for awhile. They really need to think about the future and not just the present. If Phil loses the #5 spot, send him to AAA. They will survive and, yes believe it or not, win games without him as the set up man. I love Cash, but if he doesn’t start developing these kids, I’m going to start wondering about him.

  95. austinmac March 16th, 2010 at 11:22 am

Joba has had success as a starter and in the pen when his fastball is 95 or above. He has not yet shown enough command to pitch with a 90-92 MPH fastball. It gives hitters more time to recognize his slider and lay off it. That is why he is walking more and striking out less.

I know something about hitting but less so about pitching. I don’t know if his problems with decreased velocity stem from never fully recovering from his arm injury, fear to hurt it again or a mechanical problem. Thoughts?

  96. Jerkface March 16th, 2010 at 11:22 am

Please correct me if I am wrong, but doesn’t Cashman make the decision of who is on the big league roster and not Girardi?

Girardi and Cashman are a team. Watch MLB Network’s The Pen, you see Ruben Amaro having a strategy meeting at the end of spring with Charlie Manuel and some other guys discussing who to bring North. Same stuff happens with the Yankees, more so now because Girardi is one of Cash’s guys. They work well together so far.

  97. steveoh March 16th, 2010 at 11:22 am

    Cano: .357/.391/.550, 33 HR, 50 2B, 133 RBI, MVP

Ok, probably not, but preseason is for dreaming. :)

  98. m March 16th, 2010 at 11:23 am

    Girardi loves Mitre, too.

But not as much as Aceves. :P

Anyway, one of Gaudin, Aceves, or Mitre won’t be on the opening day roster.

Unless one of Joba or Phil aren’t. haha.

  100. Betsy -Romine wasn't built in a day March 16th, 2010 at 11:24 am

If Mitre gets claimed, he gets claimed -he’s no big loss. I would much rather have Gaudin than him anyway. Mitre has no future with this team except as a possible garbage time reliever.

  101. Betsy -Romine wasn't built in a day March 16th, 2010 at 11:24 am

    Ugh, a new post, lol

  102. m March 16th, 2010 at 11:25 am

    Betsy,

I respect your opinion about Gaudin. But what future does Gaudin have with the team?

To me, they’re one and the same. One just costs 3x as much.

  103. Chad Jennings March 16th, 2010 at 11:26 am

    New post.

  104. Alan March 16th, 2010 at 11:26 am

When rosters shake out at the end of the month, economically minded GM’s will ask Cashman about Mitre and his $850K salary. Teams with a glaring need of a No. 4 or 5 starter will inquire about Gaudin and his $2.95M salary.
Both are still considered in the No. 5 mix possibly as some leverage or overhype in a deal.
Pitching injuries can be a factor in the next 2 weeks adding to the desperation some teams could have.

Joba topped out at 94 in his last outing.

He didn’t top out that high this early in his last 2 ST with the Yankees.

Tells you his arm is sound.

Now, he has to build up his pitch count and clean up his mechanics.

Plenty of time to do that.
