The Yankees used their A lineup on Tuesday, and it included Brett Gardner in the No. 9 hole. Gardner seems to be leading the race for the third outfield spot. He’s hitting below .200 and hasn’t stolen a base, but he’s struck out only twice and has two bunt singles, showing improvement in two key parts of his offensive game.

Also on Tuesday, the Yankees officially hired Kevin Towers as a member of their scouting department. The notebook also has items on Phil Hughes pitching well, A.J. Burnett pitching not so well and Mariano Rivera pitching at all. There’s also a note on Joba Chamberlain’s scheduled outing this afternoon and individual tickets going on sale Friday.

Anyone else get the feeling that Mariano decided he wanted to throw a certain number of pitches, and it was by design that those people reached base? :)

Doreen, I wouldn’t be surprised. I wonder if the Astros manager said that his team now knows how to hit Mo – or whatever it was Charlie Manuel said, lol.

    Huuuuuughes!!

Betsy, how are you? We are world champions, we did it. Yay!!! I was reading your comments from yesterday, where you were gushing over Hughes’ performance. I’m just here to say that Hughes loves that you love him so much. I’m sure he can feel your energy, passion, and loyalty. You’ve stuck with him and believed in him, and now he’s rewarding you with 4 perfect innings in spring training.

As a Yankee fan, I feel vindicated too.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day everyone :)

  7. MTU March 17th, 2010 at 8:31 am

    Five Questions:

Has Hoffman shown enough to be a keeper ?

Will Girardi fill out the BP with a Lefty ?

Who will the Yankees get in return for Mitre

Will Russo edge out Pena ?

Who will be our best AAA pitcher ?

  8. Patrick March 17th, 2010 at 8:32 am

Dang I forgot it’s St. Patrick’s day and my name is Patrick! Unfortunately I am not wearing green today :(

i’ve got a feeling that hughes is going to break out

i would send joba to AAA & give hughes the 5th spot

with joba in AAA we still have the option to develope him as a starter & if that does not work as a reliever & our bullpen has the debth without joba

joba needs to be humbled & taken out of the spotlight

  11. Patrick March 17th, 2010 at 8:33 am

Has Hoffman shown enough to be a keeper ?
    No

Will Girardi fill out the BP with a Lefty ?
    No

Who will the Yankees get in return for Mitre
    Money or a C prospect

Will Russo edge out Pena ?
    No

Who will be our best AAA pitcher ?
    Igawa :)

    Patrick-

And I’d be willing to bet you’re no Saint ! :)

  13. Roger March 17th, 2010 at 8:37 am

    Who’s pitching today?

  14. MTU March 17th, 2010 at 8:40 am

    Bru-

SJ has said that Joba’s fate depends on how he looks be the end of ST.

If Joba is still totally out of whack AAA might be a possibility.

My concern is what happens if he is somewhere in the middle, i.e.
not good enough to win the starter’s job but not bad enough to go to AAA.

Then he probably starts the year in the BP.

The Yankees will decide on the relative merit of Joba Gossage vs.
    Joba AAA.

    Might be interesting ?

    Okay -

    We’ll do GTL(U) today. :)

I’ll accept Line Ups until Chad posts the official one. The Luck of the Irish to ya!

  16. Patrick from CT March 17th, 2010 at 8:43 am

I wish I could have seen the game. It sounds like Phil pitch well but lets keep in mind who he faced.
Today Joba needs to pick it up or he’s going to find himself in AAA to start the season.

  17. bru March 17th, 2010 at 8:45 am

joba might be our best AAA pitcher

unless we give up on him starting i just don’t see him going north with the team

once he goes to the pen he is there for good

why not start him in AAA,give hughes the 5th spot & when & if we need a starter we have joba

one more bad start by joba & there are only 2 options left

    bullpen or AAA

hughes is getting the feel for his secondary pitches & pitching very well
we also still are seing flashes of brilliance with hughes

i think we need to build on joba’s 2009 year of starting by sending him to AAA & get hughes into the rotation

  20. Doreen - 2010 GTLU March 17th, 2010 at 8:47 am

I really think it’s unfair to say Joba needs to be “humbled.” We have no idea who Joba is outside of the camera’s lens or writer’s pen. In fact I’d be willing to bet he’s just as likely to be confused about what’s going on as we are with regard to why he’s such a changed pitcher.

He may be in need of being reworked, but “humbled” is awfully – I don’t know, it just seems an unfair assumption.

    Its GTLU.

No parenthesis. Some things in this world don’t change :-)

Still can’t believe we missed out on Adeiny Hechevarria. He would have been an awesome Yankee – and he wanted to be one too. Jeter of course, was blocking him… still should’ve offered more $$?

  24. SJ44 March 17th, 2010 at 8:49 am

If Girardi considers him one of the 12 best pitchers on the team, he’s going north with the Yankees.

  28. MTU March 17th, 2010 at 8:52 am

    SJ-

Right now if that was the criteria he will be going to AAA.

2 more starts to change that opinion.

  29. Patrick from CT March 17th, 2010 at 8:53 am

Joba’s got 2 more outings to show he can bring it. Maybe he will get a say in his fate like Phil did last year; bullpen or starting in AAA. Like most have said, this maybe it for Joba as a starter; at least for the Yankees. If I’m Joba, I want to be a starter or a closer. The 8th inning gig for the next 3 years is not going to make him the big $$.

  30. MTU March 17th, 2010 at 8:53 am

    Erica-

    “Taxes are evil”

Then you are doing the Devil’s work unfortunately.

  31. SJ44 March 17th, 2010 at 8:55 am

There is nothing in Joba’s work this spring that shows he has to be “humbled” at all.

I think posters all too often project their own wants into the situation. Even when it isn’t accurate.

Nobody, on or off the record, has a problem with Joba’s conditioning or work ethic this spring. That was not the case last year.

His velocity is better than it was last year at this time. The tilt on his slider is better.

It just may be that he is best suited for the bullpen, despite posters claims to the contrary.

    That is to be determined.

However, to say he needs to be “humbled” just isn’t accurate this year. He got humbled…..last year.

He is in much better shape and form so far this year.

  32. Doreen - 2010 GTLU March 17th, 2010 at 8:57 am

    Erica -

    Just being cheeky. :)

  33. NYYROC March 17th, 2010 at 8:59 am

Andy is getting today’s start. Joba and Marte will also be pitching.

  34. SJ44 March 17th, 2010 at 8:59 am

That’s not true MTU. He threw the ball really well the other day. He was just working on throwing inside. The quality of his stuff though was good. Now, he has to build on that.

Girardi has said in the Spring, whomever doesn’t win the job between the two is going to the bullpen. He hasn’t said anything about either guy going to AAA. Posters are saying that.

Even CC Sabathia, when talking about his struggles as a young pitcher last week, said his situation was “different” because one guy is going to the bullpen instead of AAA.

Nobody with the Yankees have talked about sending Joba to AAA.

  35. ditmars1929 March 17th, 2010 at 9:00 am

Chad, this is way off topic, but something I’m curious about. Does the team stay together during spring training? In a hotel, or something resembling an army barrack as in the movie Major League? Or do players just rent their own apartments short-term?

    New Post: Lineup in Clearwater

  37. Patrick March 17th, 2010 at 9:01 am

I highly doubt Joba is going to AAA, this is a championship caliber team and they aren’t going to sacrifice games in April/May just to help Joba. He is one of the 12 best pitchers, he will be with the team on opening day.

  38. MTU March 17th, 2010 at 9:03 am

    SJ-

Let’s see what he gives us today.

I’m sorry to hear that the Yankees will not consider sending Joba to AAA.

  39. jbanks March 17th, 2010 at 11:32 am

what is it about Gardner that makes the Yankees so high on him? He hasn’t had so much as a two week hot streak since he’s been around.
