Aceves scheduled to start Saturday

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Mar 18, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

It’s is a remarkably slow day here in Yankees camp. The BYU-Florida game was the center of attention in the clubhouse as players filtered in for the past hour or so.

If there is any news today, I guess it’s the fact Alfredo Aceves will start Saturday’s game against Houston. Yesterday, Joe Girardi said he wasn’t sure whether Aceves would start on Saturday or pitch in relief on Friday.

Friday’s split squad has CC Sabathia starting at home against Rick Porcello. Sergio Mitre will start on the road against Dan Wheeler, with Chad Gaudin pitching in relief.

• Nick Swisher has a five-game hitting streak, Jorge Posada has gone 8-for-11 in his past four games and Robinson Cano has a hit in six of eight games, with multiple hits in four of them.

• Available to pitch today: Javier Vazquez, Chan Ho Park, Dave Robertson, Dustin Moseley, Mark Melancon, Romulo Sanchez and Boone Logan.

• Scheduled to play off the bench: C Austin Romine, 1B Jon Weber, 2B Reegie Corona, SS Kevin Russo, 3B Eduardo Nunez, LF Colin Curtis, CF Greg Golson, RF Reid Gorecki, DH P.J. Pilittere.

• Tomorrow’s split squad at home: Francisco Cervelli, P.J. Pilittere, Mike Rivera, Robinson Cano, Derek Jeter, Nick Johnson, Alex Rodriguez, Kevin Russo, Mark Teixeira, Jorge Vazquez, Greg Golson, Jamie Hoffmann, Marcus Thames, Jon Weber and David Winfree.

• Tomorrow’s split squad on the road: Jesus Montero, Jorge Posada, Austin Romine, Reegie Corona, Brandon Laird, Juan Miranda, Eduardo Nunez, Ramiro Pena, Colin Curtis, Brett Gardner, Reid Gorecki, Curtis Granderson, Nick Swisher and Randy Winn.

• The Yankees will almost certainly add some position players from minor league camp for tomorrow’s games. Basically, the starting outfield is going on the road and the starting infield is staying here.

• Pitchers going on the road tomorrow: Sergio Mitre, Chad Gaudin, Jason Hirsh, Amaury Sanit and Zack Segovia.

• Tampa Bay’s lineup tonight:

Jason Bartlett SS
Carl Crawford LF
Ben Zobrist RF
Carlos Pena 1B
Willy Aybar 3B
B.J. Upton CF
Pat Burrell DH
Sean Rodriguez 2B
Dioner Navarro C

LHP Carlos Hernandez

UPDATE, 3:21 p.m.: Pitchers who traveled with Tampa Bay: RHP Jeff Bennett, RHP Joe Bateman, RHP Richard De Los Santos, RHP Mike Eckstrom, LHP Heath Phillips, RHP Heath Rollins and RHP Dale Thayer.

Also, according to the Rays media notes, the team has already optioned Desmond Jennings, Jeremy Hellickson and Jake McGee to minor league camp. Tim Beckham has also been reassigned there. They’ve named James Shields as their Opening Day starter.

    S.O.S.

    Yes, most of them were.

Rob Morris has 3 starters fouled out.

Scottie Reynolds is 1 of 14 from the field with 16 points.

Usually, the underdogs get the breaks.

  2. CR9 March 18th, 2010 at 3:06 pm

    WHAT A JOKE!

Down 4, one ref calls a jump ball, which would have given possession back to Morris, but another referee (the one is gambling on this game) came in and took the jump ball away and called a foul.

  4. CR9 March 18th, 2010 at 3:08 pm

Rob Morris back down 1 with 35 seconds remaining!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was just checking out the GTLU rules.

    This is my favorite.

“6. If your handle is a body part, a bodily function, or a euphemism for a body part or function, I will ignore you and ban you. ”

And as head of the “secret police”, I approve!
    ****************************

I had to create that rule last season when some dude kept submitting line ups under the handle “I farted”

I felt ridiculous everytime I would say I had a line up from that person.

To make it even worse, some commenter said “Hey look, Erica keeps saying she farted”

So after that, body parts and functions for banned from GTLU. LOL

  9. Chad Jennings March 18th, 2010 at 3:12 pm

They haven’t announced when Phil and Joba pitch next, but I assume you’re right: Phil Sunday, Joba Monday.

  10. CR9 March 18th, 2010 at 3:12 pm

He went right to the rack for Morris, down 3, and even though it appeared to be a clean block, there was no foul called.

Rob Morris played its heart out against Nova and the referees.

  11. CR9 March 18th, 2010 at 3:12 pm

    RIGHT BACK! Down 1

  12. stuckey March 18th, 2010 at 3:14 pm

“Average ERA+ is set to be 100; a score above 100 indicates that the pitcher performed better than average, below 100 indicates worse than average.”

If I understand the metric correctly, 100 is the average for major league pitchers. What is the average for major league starting pitchers?

  13. CR9 March 18th, 2010 at 3:14 pm

Morris down 3 with 10 seconds and the ball.

    Maybe a 4 point play?

  19. stuckey March 18th, 2010 at 3:19 pm

“Pettitte was a No. 3 2009 playoff starter and Joba can’t tie Pettitte’s laces, numbers be damned. The comparison you called for by the numbers exposes Joba’s flaws; it’s a case where the sum of his parts is just not indicative of the whole. IMO, you’re inviting people to arrive at a dubious conclusion by resort to numbers alone. And that’s just my humble opinion of course.”

Honestly, some will call this word games and that’s fine. I’ve come to expect that, but comparing him to a member of his own team is pointless in context of the point at hand.

If you or others fail to recognize the contextual difference between Chamberlain’s performance as a #5 starter as compared to the #3 starters on play-teams that Yankees compete against, and there are no circumstances in which Chamberlain needs to outperform a teammate once the bell rings, then I concede defeat.

Yes, Pettitte was much better than Chamberlain, which of course, was a very GOOD thing.

[and I get accused of arguing just for the sale of arguing]

  20. Frank March 18th, 2010 at 3:19 pm

“Maybe they had money on Villanova”

With Nova an 18 point favorite, that would seem unlikely.

  21. S.o.S. March 18th, 2010 at 3:20 pm

Why am i not happy my team won right about now?
Its funny, even though i fill out my bracket and have some favorites winning. Every year I always seem to be rooting for the under dogs to beat any power house team. No playoff is better than March madness.

  22. Ralph March 18th, 2010 at 3:21 pm

Frank they could have bet the money line (not actually suggesting they had money on the game)

  24. stuckey March 18th, 2010 at 3:22 pm

“I just did prove you wrong. An ERA+ of 90 and a 4.82 FIP is below average for starting pitchers.”

If I’m wrong, may I ask for the courtesy of linking me to the evidence?

Not doubting, I’d just like to see the margin of my error myself…

  25. S.o.S. March 18th, 2010 at 3:22 pm

Speaking of underdogs. Its seems like Sam Houston st. and Murray st(got them) are taking the Morris route. Making them earn the win. Hopefully the refs already cashed in on the Nova game.

Lohud has really turned into a hay field recently…

Lots of dry, straw man arguments getting foisted up again and again.

The thing about straw men is that they are simultaneously combative and boring at the same time. That’s quite a combination.

Verbal fist a cuffs usually at least have some kind of entertainment value…

It seems like we’re no longer so fortunate.

  45. m March 18th, 2010 at 3:36 pm

Anyone who doesn’t like pro-playoffs must not have a team that plays in the playoffs. ;)

  46. stuckey March 18th, 2010 at 3:36 pm

“Once again, thinnest kid in fat camp argument.”

When at the end of the year, the aware the world championship to the thinest kid in camp, then that’s relevant.

The whole point of MLB is competition. You only have to be better than the next best. There are no style points. You don’t have to meet an objective threshold.

So to play out your analogy, the Yankees don’t have to be THIN, they simply have to be THINNER.

Multiple discussion will become much more succinct when this is fully understood.

  47. Alan March 18th, 2010 at 3:38 pm

The Rays sent Desmond Jennings down but he’s the successor to Carl Crawford in LF when Carl becomes a Yankee in 2011.

My office is using the CBS brackets and what I do is take a look at the notes for each team and go from there.

  49. stuckey March 18th, 2010 at 3:38 pm

“If you’re asking whether he compared favorably with other below average pitchers, then the answer is a resounding yes.”

One other thing – if you think the majority of pitchers in the major leagues are below average, then I don’t think you have a firm grasp what average means.

HALF the pitchers in the majors are average or above, by RULE.

SoS, on CBS you can; you go into the screen where you click on your picks and hover over the little note icon at the top right. I don’t know if other pools have this option. I also occasionally check ESPN and CNN’s bracket notes, but I really basically looked at the notes and went on a hunch.

I was surprised that they even brought up as many players as they did that hadn’t even played above High A ball. None of them disappointed, either. Not sure if they ever make an impact, but, they at least show the world that they have others besides Montero.

It will be interesting to see who wins the James P. Dawson Award for the best rookie in camp. I’d think that McAllister, Curtis, Russo and Laird will lead the pack.

It’s no surprise there are so many close games in the tourney. Lots of parity and precious few dominant teams like UNC ’09.

Why is there only 1 play-in game. How come they don’t expand the tourney to 4 play-in games?

  75. S.o.S. March 18th, 2010 at 4:05 pm

    Frank,
I have Sienna winning that game.
Who do you think of the lower seeds have to potential to do the most damage? I think Texas and Tennessee can be a handful if they play to their potential.

What do you think about UTEP and Cornell getting past the first round?

  76. S.o.S. March 18th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

    mel,
Nick and I were talking about that the other day. We both agreed that it would be better to have an extra 4 play in games.
96 teams though, seemed like too many and would hurt the importance of the regular season. Someone mentioned to have the first 32 teams have a bye and go with the 64 in the first round.

  77. Frank March 18th, 2010 at 4:08 pm

    M:

Kansas ’10 is probably UNC ’09. They may not win, but they have way more talent than everyone else.

As for play-ins, they have one now to accomodate the champion of a newly formed conference (The Summit Conference, maybe?). They added the play-in game because the Big 6 conference were pissing and moaning about the number of at-large teams being reduced from 34.

  87. Zach March 18th, 2010 at 4:30 pm

I have a funny story about George Mason…

My mom teaches there, and she was excited about the team, so she decided to buy a shirt at the university store. So she walks up to the counter, and starts talking to the cashier about the different styles, etc… After she buys her shirt, she turned around and saw a line of about 75 people standing therein absolute shock. They had all been waiting for ages, and my mom just waltzed in, assuming the place would be relatively empty, as it usually is.

    Was she embarassed or what…

That was a fun time… No one outside of VA had even heard of George Mason.

  88. Betsy -Romine wasn't built in a day March 18th, 2010 at 4:31 pm

SoS – crossing my fingers. Sam Houston is probably a tiny school, so even if they lose – hey, they gave it a real run.

  89. S.o.S. March 18th, 2010 at 4:34 pm

    Zach,
    A. Shock that their winning?
    B. Shock that she cut in line?
    C. Shock that she found a nice style shirt?
    D. Shock that no one said anything about her cutting in line including the cashier?
    E. None of the above?

Doing pretty well, Pat. Just tired after a long week. How’s your rehabbing going?

I really do like Laird’s bat. The real surprise for me, though, has been the huge improvement that he’s made on his defensive play over the last year. He’s done nothing wrong since his stint in the AFL. Like most of the others in the organization, he’s not going to be a huge walk guy, but, he won’t strike out a lot, either. Really nice power to all fields and mostly line drives. Just gets a little jumpy at the plate from time to time. His biggest knock is his slow starts, though. He turns up the heat around June, though.

Not sure who, but some teams are playing in Providence. 5 minutes away, easy enough to get tickets (SJ isn’t the only one with friends in high places. :) ) Hmmm. Nah, screaming college kids in a smelly auditorium isn’t my idea of fun.

I predicted that Jorge would have a tear-butt ST and end up batting 5th as a result. It looks like one part of it is true anyway – or at least in the last several games.

  110. Tom in NJ March 18th, 2010 at 4:59 pm

  114. Gator March 18th, 2010 at 5:02 pm

My bracket is going great so far

    Picked FLA over BYU
Robert Morris over Nova (I thought Nova was shot going in)
    Vandy over Murray State
    ND over Old Dominion
    Sam Houston over Baylor

Also picked North Texas getting the upset over KSU… ouch.

Still have a chance for my first win if Richmond wins.

  115. m March 18th, 2010 at 5:03 pm

Tom is right. It was a fade-away. And it looked way short, esp. since it looked like the defender to the left clipped it. I screamed when it went in. Of course I freaked out the kids.

  119. Pat M. March 18th, 2010 at 5:08 pm

Earlier someone posed the question as to why Phil Hughes didn’t go earlier in the 04 draft……The overall opinion was that he’d go to USC if the Angels didn’t select him, so teams stayed away because of money and the fact that he wanted to play in Anahiem….The Angel scouts, and many insiders wanted him badly…However Stoneman wanted Jareed Weaver who would have been the # 1 overall pick if it weren’t for Boras and his nonsense….Stoneman wanted a close to ready starter to go with Bartolo Colon, Lackey, Washburn…..He didn’t want to wait for Hughes as he already had a young Ervin Sanatana ready to hit the Big Club…..Everyone that I talk to who is involved with the Halos, all consider not taking Hughes a big mistake down the road…..

  124. Banks March 18th, 2010 at 5:12 pm

    The NCAA tournament is awesome

People who know nothing about basketball or college basketball and don’t even watch much of the regular season, who couldn’t even name more than 3 or 4 players/coaches in this tournament all act as if they know whats going on.

Ironically, those people fill out the best brackets because they don’t over analyze and get into specific matchups and complicate their bracket.

  125. stuckey March 18th, 2010 at 5:15 pm

“After that, there’s not a lot to talk about”

You mean the black hole in LF has collapsed?

Isn’t Jorge Posada still worse than my late grandmother behind the plate?

We no longer worried about Jeter’s contract and how long he can play shortstop?

There HAS to be some overblown concern we can talk to death, no?? :-)

  130. Frank March 18th, 2010 at 5:24 pm

“Isn’t Jorge Posada still worse than my late grandmother behind the plate?”

Not anymore. Sure, your grandmother probably frames pitches better, but Posada has the stronger arm and is far better at blocking 59 footers.

  139. Fred March 18th, 2010 at 5:47 pm

College hoops stinks ever since all the great players started leaving after 1 year of college.

It’s JV basketball compared to what it used to be.

If it weren’t for the brackets, the ratings would be lower than the NHL.

  140. Jason March 18th, 2010 at 5:49 pm

  142. Mike March 18th, 2010 at 5:58 pm

One thing about the Yanks no one is talking about-lefties in the pen. If Logan gets sent down-and I’m not sure he’s major league material-that leaves us with only Marte as a lefty. Not a comfortable thought.

  143. stuckey March 18th, 2010 at 6:02 pm

“The Yanks should sign Dye and Dukes, then package them in a deal to the Mets for Johan.”

I’d prefer Felix Hernanez or Lincecum. Hell, I’d even include Juan Miranda AND Romulo Sanchez to make it happen.

  144. RayVT March 18th, 2010 at 6:03 pm

I wouldn’t be surprised if the A’s signed Dukes. Have someone drive him to each game & follow him around. Also write his checks for alimony.

  145. stuckey March 18th, 2010 at 6:04 pm

Yanks got by just fine with only Phil Coke out there last year, and they’d probably would have gotten along just as well without him.

  146. Jim March 18th, 2010 at 6:08 pm

Whoever signs Dukes is getting a young 5-tool player oozing with talent who has learned his lesson and will have a chip on his shoulder.

A team devoid of talent should not be releasing a stud prospect. C’mon, the guy had a couple of slip-ups off the field, but he is not a bad guy. He didn’t kill anybody.

Oh well, that’s why they are the Nationals. Some team is getting a gem.

Not only is Dukes having knee and foot problems, but Washington doesn’t want him in the clubhouse. He’s a disruptive influence who’s production isn’t worth the problems he causes.

    http://washington.nationals.ml.....8;c_id=was

***General manager Mike Rizzo said Dukes was released based on performance, not any off-the-field incidents. But Rizzo did say the clubhouse would be more united.

“We just didn’t see the progress we hoped to get,” Rizzo said. “This was not a knee-jerk reaction on several Spring Training at-bats. We spoke about this throughout the winter internally. We had a game plan in place to see who was going to claim the job, and we thought we should go in a different direction by releasing Elijah.

“The things that happened in the clubhouse are clubhouse matters. We are not going to go into any details on what happened behind closed doors. We have a more cohesive, united group. I think the chemistry will continue to be great. We think we are going to be a better ballclub moving forward.”***

  150. RayVT March 18th, 2010 at 6:21 pm

“He’s a disruptive influence who’s production isn’t worth the problems he causes.”

    ————————

Elijah Dukes as the 25th man on the roster in a locker room with guys like Jeter, Posada, CC, Granderson, etc. would have to kill one of his teammates to be disruptive. Especially since the only thing you lose is 400K if you cut him at the first sign of trouble.

Dukes played a very different role in the Nationals clubhouse than he would with the Yankees.

Why anyone would want the Yankees to sell their soul for this psycho is beyond me. Sorry, I’m not giving him credit for being on good behavior (if he was) for however long he may have been. It’s all moot – the Yankees spent a lot of time getting rid of the bad apples and they are not going to bring in the baddest of them all.

  155. Jerkface March 18th, 2010 at 6:28 pm

Why wholesale handbags only? Well, this is because you can save from 50% to 75% by opting for wholesale store instead of a retail store. Wholesalers usually urge you to shop in bulk and when you do so, the prices of the items drop considerably. If you are thinking what you would do with the bulk of handbags bought in wholesale, you can keep them for a giveaway as gifts on occasions.

These tools are not finished products; indeed, they may never be finished products. With the British Pavilion as my metaphor, I am beginning to believe That We Should never stop improving on the teaching tools That coaches use to Improve instruction. So I am putting These tools out there for people to try out and give us feedback. We hope to refine our tools Continually know That they are simpler and more powerful, with the goal of creating a set of tools That help us Achieve our goal of having an unmistakable positive impact on children’s lives.
