Mark Melancon is almost certainly crowded out of the Yankees bullpen, but he might be simply be following the path of Dave Robertson who opened last season in Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and finished it in the World Series. What his destination, Melancon isn’t worried or anxious, he’s just pitching, and pitching pretty well.

The pitching battles that really matter are reaching a new level tonight when Sergio Mitre and Chad Gaudin face the Rays, basically pitching for the right to stay in the fifth-starter competition. The notebook also has items on Damaso Marte, Javier Vazquez, Chan Ho Park, the outfield competition and Alex Rodriguez being out of the lineup.

    upstate kate -

Thanks. We’re leaving on Sunday morning at 5 a.m. But today I’ve got to go pick up #1 daughter and one last trip to the mall, and then tomorrow is pulling it all together. Not the fun part at all.

Is 8-8 on the brackets decent? So many close games yesterday that could have gone the opposite way and made me a winner. Oh, well. Last year I was reckless, picking upset after upset, to no avail. I played it safer this year, and while I’m faring better than last year, it’s still not very satisfying. Well, at least my final four teams are still in so far. Last year I was out of that on the first day! :)

The Yankees are in a very good position, pitching wise. It seems like they have depth in all areas. And they also look like they have some minor league position player insurance as well, as Kevin Russo and Colin Curtis continue to impress. Not to say they could replace at the same level, but could be viable.

    Catch you later guys.

Oh, and a reminded that there is no official Guess The LIneUp today, but certainly feel free to guess to your heart’s content if it pleases you to do so. :)

while they have said that the loser of the joba/phil competition gets the eight inning gig, i think the relief pitching order is really to be determined during the season. joba/phil may the the first guy to get the 8th inning shot, who ends up with it longer term will be determined during the first few weeks of the season.

if the season started today it would probably be joba but it may well end up being drob, chan-ho or even melancon as the season gets going.

Melancon didn’t look that great last night – I really don’t see what the hype machine sees in him; he was ok, nothing special.

Mitre and Gaudin don’t have a prayer of winning the 5th spot….

    Y’s guy
Pat M made a good point about the Yankees using both DRob and Joba more to save Mo. In any case, was it specifically said that Joba (or Phil) would be the EIG, or are we making the as-sumption that would be where they go, based on the fact that they are better pitchers?

The Yankees went in to their Dr. for a checkup.

And the Dr. said they were healty except for one thing.

    They have glut problems.

They suffer from upper level glut problems.

He suugested rest and a few trades to solve the problem. :)

I Think I’d rather go with Thames & Winn as the bench outfielders & Let Hoffman go back to the Dodgers.
I really don’t think much of Winn either. I believe his best days are behind him. I really hope Winn proves me dead wrong. If he struggles he should be released & let Golson, Winfree, or Curtis get the call up. Hoffman has had every chance to impress & he hasn’t.

There’s always a chance the Yanks offer the Dodgers something in exchange for holding on to Hoffman. Thames took a third strike last night in an RBI situation which is not a great way to make friends and influence people

I really hope the Yankees make a full committment to both Hughes and Joba as starting pitchers. They will both be needed in the rotation during the course of the season. Plus it gives the kids who have been developed for the BP (DRob, Melancon, etc) a chance to show they can do the job. Plenty of time to switch one to the BP around mid-season if needed.

All that said, the one who doesn’t win the 5th starter job should pitch April 8th…in Scranton!
