Poor AJ…….and Phil, too, but more AJ because he’s had the worst luck. He absolutely needs to face hitters….and if the Yanks are going to judge Phil, so does Phil.

Erin, it will be as riveting as the fungo golf game, lol. I think Phil should hit against AJ and vice versa, lol.
************************
LOL Did we ever find out who won the fungo golf game?
If they don’t (and they don’t extend the time for making a decision), it will reveal how nonsensical this “competition” has been from the start. It would have been an insult to the intelligence of the players, the fans, and the media.
SJ, did you read AJ’s comments last out? He was overly strong because he didn’t face hitters; please tell me the benefit of a “simulated game” where the pitcher just throws to a catcher. Clearly AJ was anxious to face hitters….and I don’t blame him. I don’t see anything wrong with what I’ve said.
yeah one of the misconceptions of Florida, California should be called the Sunshine State. Florida really has similar weather patterns of New York except it has daily high averages 25-35 degrees warmer in the winter where it’s supposed to be drier but you still get washouts here and there. July-September it rains literally everyday at least an hour

TYankees will move from Tampa when they are the only team remaining in Florida, and not before. They draw a ton there. In Arizona, while they would be the Yankees, would be only one of many, many teams in the Phoenix area.
Will Burnett and Hughes pitch in a simulated game today? If so, how does that impact the so-called 5th starter competition?
————————————————————
The only advantage is the limited travel in Arizona. 14 0f the 15 teams are within 20 miles of each other. The players, and especially the pitchers, don’t like the fact that they can’t get up a good sweat in the desert. That seems to the the one constant thing that you hear from the players.

yeah travel is easy and cheap from New York to Tampa/Florida compared to Arizona
Per Jack Curry, Girardi’s door is still closed……and Phil is waiting by his locker, waiting to see what’s up. Curry speculates that AJ and Andy will both pitch in the intra-squad game (I was wrong – it’s not a minor league game) and that Phil will pitch against the Phillies along with Joba. Curry said that Phil, when asked, said he doesn’t think it makes any sense for him to pitch in a simulated game because the team is still evaluating him.
Rich, agreed. Let AJ and Andy throw in the minor league game and let Phil and Joba go tomorrow.
********************
Betsy,
Jack Curry on YES is waiting to talk to Girardi about the pitching plans but he speculated the Yankees will do exactly what you posted. And since the game is on YES tomorrow you would get to see Phil
Interesting remarks from Curry on Pettitte. He gets the impression that this will be Andy Pettitte’s last year. It will be a sad day to see him go. If it is, hopefully he leaves with a 21 win season to reach 250 career wins.

GB, how are you feeling today? I would love to see Andy get 21 wins, but I’m not expecting it. What a wonderful career he’s had…
————————————————————
Do well today, Betsy. Thank you for asking. Other than the rainout, hope your day is going well.
I’m not expecting Pettitte to win 21 games this season, either, but, I wasn’t expecting Mussina to leave on his first 20 win season. I’ll settle for his normal average of 16 wins, though. 16 wins and an ERA of about 4.00 would be just fine. I do want to see him have a winning season, though. Not many pitchers have 16 year careers with no losing seasons. His worst was 14-14. Another WS title and a couple more PS wins would be the way for him to retire.
GB, glad to hear it. I’m fine, thanks! That is an amazing stat, Andy never having a losing season. I would be very happy with an ERA about 4; I’ll take 16 wins, but you never know about run support, so I’ll just take Andy pitching well. I will also take another WS title – it’s weird, but it’s like those few years in Houston never happened. I can barely remember the Yankees without Andy… Well, those years did happen or else we wouldn’t have Phil, but still.
I walked in at 1:30 and was so excited about actually being able to watch my first spring training game of the season (I am always at work)….. with Johnny Damon
Andy is very candid about his HGH use. No matter what I think of Roger now (and I was a huge fan), I always find it sad when a close friendship ends or is changed forever.
We’ll be seeing Romine and Montero again in the not-so-distant future………it’s time for Jorge and Cervelli to get the majority of playing time now. Golson had a nice spring, I think – good for him
Betsy, I’m not sure that 2004 would have been any different, but, I assume that it would have. He missed 2/3rds of that season, but, that injury to a weak elbow was because of a check swing. I like to think that it would have been different, but, NYY lost 3 front line starters all at once.
Hopefully, Hughes can carry on where Pettitte leaves off and pitches just as well for the next 15 years. Same with Chamberlain and the kids coming up behind them. With the young pitchers in the system, if NYY gets 5 pitchers that can produce at or above ML average, NYY pitching will be in good shape for the future.

GB, if Phil, Joba, etc.. can approximate Andy for the next 15 years, I will be thrilled – and so will all Yankee fans. As I recall, Andy came up and had immediate success so maybe fans are spoiled. Joba and Phil have had their bumps in the road, but I feel certain the end results will have justfied our patience.

Yikes I take the Gonzaga hit…. Yep, lots of good news with regards to the kids. I’m sure the Yanks were very happy with Montero and Romine as well as Curtis and Golson. I’m still rooting for Russo, I admit it, but Pena is a nice player as well. It stinks that the Yankees are always trashed for their minor league system, but we won the WS in large part because of contributions from our kids. In the end, that’s what counts – results, not hype.

What a surprise.
Is it possible to have a Yanks game without rain/threat of rain?
At this rate, home opener will definitely be rained out/postponed too.
Anybody watching YES? They are previewing the game with the tarp on the field behind them and still haven’t said the game is rained out.
Plutonium,
The rain nearly killed us last year. Took Posada down for a time and also Molina.
April and even May in the Bronx the last couple years has been so hostile to the game of baseball.
Not comfortable for the spectator, either.

Gonzaga could win this game if Syracuse agrees to take no more shots.
Emphasis there is on “could”. I’d still like SU’s chances even if they made that agreement.
21 victories on final season for Pettitte would be a great feeling.
