Sounds like a plan

The Yankees have a pitching plan for tomorrow.

There will be an intrasquad game here at George M. Steinbrenner Field tomorrow morning. The Yankees haven’t announced who the hitters will be — probably a mix of minor leaguers — but these will be the pitching assignments:

Team 1: Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera and Damaso Marte

vs.

Team 2: Joba Chamberlain, Chan Ho Park and Dave Robertson

The rest of the Yankees will travel to Clearwater to play the Phillies. A.J. Burnett will start that game with Phil Hughes pitching in relief.

well, it is better than nothing.

Girardi can throw a few curves of his own!: Didn’t see that one coming!

  3. Chad Jennings March 21st, 2010 at 3:27 pm

It would have been the biggest upset of the year had Rivera been asked to pitch in Clearwater. The joke around here is that he isn’t even given a pair of grey pants in spring training.

  4. HolyYankee! March 21st, 2010 at 3:28 pm

Curtis, Montero and Webber should face Chamberlain.

  5. Rich in NJ March 21st, 2010 at 3:29 pm

I’m glad that Girardi almost followed my advice.

  6. HolyYankee! March 21st, 2010 at 3:33 pm

is it a full 7 innings? 5 innings from each starter and 1 inning from each reliever?

  7. Matt March 21st, 2010 at 3:33 pm

If this isin’t the biggest give-away that Hughes is the favorite for the 5th spot, I don’t know what is.

They selected him to start against the regulars, while Joba gets to face minor league hitters in an informal setting.

good article about the Yanks pitching inside, and protecting their own (something they didn’t seem to do under Joe T.):

Hughes gets to face Utley, Howard, Werth
Joba gets to face Dave Winfree, Greg Golson, and Reed Gorecki

I’m not surprised because AJ needed to face real live hitters……I am surprised that they didn’t just keep Andy/AJ and Phil Joba.

  12. Chad Jennings March 21st, 2010 at 3:45 pm

I don’t think the game is going to have an innings limit. I imagine each pitcher will pitch to his limit, however many innings that takes. It will probably be like a minor league spring training game. If a pitcher reaches his limit in the middle of an inning, they’ll simply stop the inning, take the players off the field and move to the next inning.

  13. Nick in SF in Larkspur March 21st, 2010 at 3:45 pm

So Joba faces players from the World Champions and Phil faces Last Year’s Losers?

Joba pitches with bullpen pieces and Phil is with the Starters Squad?

So transparent. It’s in the bag for Young Master Philip!

  14. Betsy - Romine wasn't built in a day March 21st, 2010 at 3:46 pm

I think all of us are trying to read signs from the Yankees, but none of use really knows anything. It’s not a sign that Phil is the leader for the4 #5 spot because initially Joba was pitching in Clearwater.

The same thing goes for Phil as would have gone for Joba. I doubt the Yankees are expecting him to dominate the Phils. I’d like to see him continue to throw his change, get his curve over and have good FB command. If they hit him, so be it.

  15. ranu March 21st, 2010 at 3:46 pm

  18. JT March 21st, 2010 at 3:53 pm

They are not looking at ERA when evaluating these guys, they are looking at stuff, command, pitch selection, etc.

So really it doesn’t matter who the hitters are. Of course, Joba can get away with more mistakes against minor leaguers than the Phillies hitters.

  19. Rich in NJ March 21st, 2010 at 4:06 pm

    JT

True, but it’s easier to trust your marginal stuff and throw strikes v. inferior hitters.

  32. LGY - Child Prodigy/GB7's Bestest Buddy March 21st, 2010 at 4:57 pm

This decision by the Yankees could not be more clear.

They are setting Hughes up to fail. They are throwing him to the wolves to face to big time lefties in Howard and Utley. They also know Hughes is not mentally tough enough to handle the spotlight in Clearwater during a nationally televised game.

Joba gets to stay home and blow away the scrubs. Girardi is probably calling all the minor leaguers into his office now and telling them to take it easy on Joba just in case.

The competition was over before it started. I don’t know what else you guys and gals need to see.

  33. Pat M. March 21st, 2010 at 4:59 pm

Joe in Long Island…..No insider info, I just been wagering since my days in HS….It’s a controlled hobby…I startoff every season ( Football / Basketball . 34. blake March 21st, 2010 at 5:00 pm

    Stuckey,
Does the decisions regarding the pitching assignments tommorow change your opinion on whose job it is to lose?

    Pat M. – I’m envious. With me, it’s not gambling, it’s a sure thing.

  36. Pat M. March 21st, 2010 at 5:08 pm

Joe in Long Island, I discovered long ago that I know much more about sports than I do the market, and it’s been for the most part very rewarding……Let’s put it this way, I took a beating in the markets during the past 18 months, I could never lose that much handicapping sports….I like my edge better this way….

  37. stuckey March 21st, 2010 at 5:15 pm

“Does the decisions regarding the pitching assignments tommorow change your opinion on whose job it is to lose?”

    Little bit.

I’d still put my money on Chamberlain and stick with my ultimate prediction on the 5th starter, but yes, it has created a higher level of doubt.

  38. blake March 21st, 2010 at 5:18 pm

    stuckey,
    Fair enough.

  39. Mark March 21st, 2010 at 5:22 pm

Joe can always rationalize it by saying that Hughes/AJ was the original plan for today and they just pushed it back.

Who knows? Maybe AJ told Joe that he wants to face ML hitters to get into a groove and that’s why the alignment is like this.

  40. kd March 21st, 2010 at 5:22 pm

first of all, GO BEARS! My glorious California Golden Bears will punish the silly Blue Devils.

    Ok, a guy can dream.

Any guesses on the Mauer contract? Mine is 10/220.

If he was a free agent, 10/290

  41. t-rock March 21st, 2010 at 5:25 pm

“Does the decisions regarding the pitching assignments tommorow change your opinion on whose job it is to lose?”

Can be looked at 2 ways.

    1. Hughes is in the lead for the 5th spot and he needs the experience vs. big leaguers (and is being prepared to face ML lineups) and Joba doesn’t because its likely he goes to the pen.

    2. Joba is in the lead, so they don’t need to see him face big leaguers, but rather, just get his innings in. Thus, they wanted to see how Hughes fared against the better hitters.

Or its much ado about nothing.

Either way, it is curious that they didn’t just go Hughes/Joba in the Phillies game.

Did AJ ask to face the better lineup because he has only faced a ML lineup once this spring and wants to work on things (like his change) against big leaguers? Did they intentionally try to split both kids up?

  42. Benny Blanco March 21st, 2010 at 5:25 pm

Does anybody else think the yankees will open up against the redsox with CC, AJ, JAVY VS LESTER, BECKEET, LACKEY?

  43. Frontier March 21st, 2010 at 5:26 pm

Mauer will give the Twins a hometown discount.

My money is on a 5 yr/$92 million dollar deal. A franchise like that can’t absorb a $100 million+ contract, and he knows it. So he will take just below that.

  44. LGY - Child Prodigy/GB7's Bestest Buddy March 21st, 2010 at 5:26 pm

“BTW Randy Winn must have nude pics ala Ransom last yr.”

    —————————–

Except that Randy Winn has an established track record of success as a major leaguer and Ransom had/has zero.

Winn’s numbers last year are completely skewed by an absolute horrid performance against LHP. So bad and so out of line with his career norms that it could very likely have been a complete aberration.

Last year Winn was .292/.354/.397 in 472 PA against RHP. That was 80% of his PA’s. If he was completely done as a baseball player he would not have been able to do that in the VAST majority of his PA’s.

Winn vs. LHP in his career is a .280/.332/.426 hitter. Last year he was .158/.184/.200 in 125 PA. In his career his BABIP against LHP is .301. Last year against LHP his BABIP was .178. That is an unsustainably low number.

In 80% of his at bats last year Winn was still a good baseball player. In the 20% of his at bats where he was horrible his numbers were completely out of line with his career norms and he could very likely have suffered from incredibly bad luck.

Winn is due for a bounce back year (probably why Cash signed him) and even if he is not he is a very useful player against RHP who the Yankees will face the majority of the time. Not to mention his defense is very valuable.

Winn’s spot on this team is not in jeopardy. You either need to accept that or get over it.

  45. Jay March 21st, 2010 at 5:31 pm

Winn is a better player than Hairston– better hitter, better fielder, faster, slightly more power, yet everyone loved Hairston last year.

  46. jim March 21st, 2010 at 5:33 pm

    Some good games going on:

    Xavier vs. Pitt
    Texas vs. Purdue
    Democrats vs. Republicans
    Cal vs. Duke

  47. Pat M. March 21st, 2010 at 5:35 pm

LGY, Randy Winn will be a very valuable contributor in 2010…..I’m still convinced that we’ll be seeing him patrolling left field come May

  48. LGY - Child Prodigy/GB7's Bestest Buddy March 21st, 2010 at 5:39 pm

    Additionally,

Last year Winn was .225/.289/.296 at home and .295/.345/.404 on the road.

In his career he is a .285/.344/.412 and .287/.344/.425. Nearly identical.

In his career at San Fran’s ballpark he is .292/.345/.423. A far cry from the .225/.289/.296 he was last year.

Mauer should have been a Yankee, this is devasting news and we will feel the effects for years to come. When Mauer is leading his Twins over the Yankees in the ALDS this year, everyone who is currently happy about this signing will turn into anger. The Yankees should have prevented this, there should have been a deal under the table by the Yankees promising Mauer 300 million if he went to free agency.. I AM disgusted.

  69. DonnieBaseball March 21st, 2010 at 6:22 pm

The Mauer deal makes the Red Sox and their fans extremely nervous. They need to now be major players for Adrian Gonzales or Prince Fielder or some other power bat. The reason why is linked to the dirty little secret in the prospect world – the Red Sox do not have any hitting prospects who can bat in no. 3 or no. 4 in the lineup and be generational. We have seen how Dustin and Youk are great at Fenway but not generationally great outside of the green monster. The Sox will continue to look for that big bat that Manny Ramirez represented.

  70. Bronx Jeers March 21st, 2010 at 6:22 pm

“I’m not seeing a lot of crying in the midst of RSN. Most folks including Sox fans figured Mauer would resign with Minnesota.”

I think most of us thought he would re-sign as well but we sure as hell did not want to see a Theo vs Cashman bidding war.

Because I think the Yanks would have won that war but at great cost.

Now we can keep our awesome, young and cheap catcher and still have the cash for a different prize.

  75. Bronx Jeers March 21st, 2010 at 6:32 pm

And it really is great deal for both sides.

Mauer gets the 4th biggest deal ever and the Twins aren’t going to be crippled paying an old catcher 23 mil per year.

I think it was Mauer’s agent (Ron Shapiro) that said the best deal is the one where all parties win and in this respect I think he succeeded.

Fans, City, Player, Team and Ownership all win on this deal.

  76. G. Love March 21st, 2010 at 6:33 pm

    Great news about Mauer.

Now let Adrian Gonzales get dealt to Seattle, the Mets or anywhere other than Boston and I will be a very happy man.

If Gonzales gets to dealt to another team, we’ll get treated to wild Hanley Ramirez back to Boston fantasy offers again by the likes of Gammons and the rest of NESPN.

They’re running out of franchise players to trade all their “top chips” for.

On a side note, I really felt bad for Pete when I checked out that blog while drinking my coffee this morning. If they get 5 comments on a post it seems like it’s a lot. Sad. The give and take he experienced with all of us here is non-existent there.

Donniebaseball, I think Pedroia’s split stats are indeed significant but if you look at last year’s stats anyways Youkilis does nearly as well away as he does at home.

Last year he actually had more double away (19) than home (17). He had exactly 1 less home run away (13) than home (14). He has four less RBI’s away than home. Home OBP was .422 with an away OBP .405

He had 76 hits home and 74 hits away. I will grant you his overall average was 30 points better at home, but in most categories his home and away stats were very close.
