Spring Training Game 19: Yankees vs. Tigers
It’s raining pretty hard right now. This might pass quickly enough to play ball, but right now it’s pretty ugly and it’s hard to imagine the game starting on time, if it starts at all.
YANKEES
Derek Jeter SS
Nick Johnson 1B
Jorge Posada C
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Curtis Granderson CF
Randy Winn LF
Francisco Cervelli DH
RHP A.J. Burnett
TIGERS
Brandon Inge 3B
Johnny Damon LF
Magglio Ordonez RF
Miguel Cabrera 1B
Carlos Guillen DH
Don Kelly CF
Gerald Laird C
Scott Sizemore 2B
Adam Everett SS
RHP Justin Verlander
TIME/TV: 1:05 p.m./YES Network
WEATHER: Not good. Forecast calls for rain all afternoon.
UMPIRES: Only three listed for today’s game: HP Mark Wegner, 1B Andy Fletcher, 2B Toby Basner
ON THE LINE: Phil Hughes is pitching out of the bullpen, still trying to make his case for the last spot in the Yankees rotation. He was terrific his last time out… The Tigers brought two left-handed pitchers, so Curtis Granderson could get another at-bat against a lefty… Marcus Thames and Jamie Hoffmann each have the day off.

UPDATE, 12:39 p.m.: Northwestern football coach Pat Fitzgerald is at the stadium today. He’s a good friend of Joe Girardi and brought his family to check out spring training. Girardi went to Northwestern, hence the connection. Fitzgerald was a heckuva player back in the mid-90s.
UDATE, 12:41 p.m.: While we’re waiting for the game to start, check out Marc Carig’s Q&A with Kevin Towers.

they’re not getting this game in, looks very ugly out…not just a passing shower, a day long even most likely
I’m not sure about the free medical and dental for life – as I read a story on Sal Fasano being wiped out because of medical issues and he’s been trying to get back on any major league club to get those things worked out (unsuccessfully).

Anyone know what happened to Josh Thompson? Is he still with LoHud?
M, if I’m the Yankees, I push AJ to tomorrow. He’s already had one rain out and you saw what throwing to Jorge without facing any hitters did for him last out – he was way too strong and wild. AJ has had a very iffy ST in terms of preparation and he really needs to face live hitting; there’s no way I make him throw another simulated game (which isn’t even simulated, with no hitters in the box).
As to Phil and Joba, maybe AJ and Andy should go tomorrow and Phil/Joba pitch in a minor league game…

“I’m not sure about the free medical and dental for life”
It just seems to be too expensive, sadly, although no one should go broke for lack of health insurance.
“Stuckey, I thought we agreed that a good starter will be more valuable to a team than a good set-up man?”
Not sure I see your point?
Once again, it’s just a numbers game on a VERY deep team. There is one rotation spot.
It’s as simple as that.
Betty,
Yes, that makes sense. I have no doubt, though that AJ will be ready. Have him face a minor league squad. We have a national crisis on our hands right now with the #5 competition.

pcaldera The way it’s raining here at Tampa, picturing a riveting simulated matchup between Burnett and Hughes inside the batting tunnel at GMS Field

betsy, you are correct about hughes because home team won that game.
Anyway, I am sure that none of you guys will ever think about but Park could be our setup role. It will help either Hughes or Chamberlain to log on more innings out of bullpen. Pettitte (health) and Burnett(wild/ high count) may struggle to pitch deeper and Aceves is not going to pitch 2 or 3 innings every game.
Repost @ Josh:
I don’t think that’s how it works Josh – according to the article, it seems to be year to year:
“If you are a ballplayer, and you spend so much as a second on a major league roster, you are entitled to a year of coverage that, says one major league executive, “takes care of pretty much everything you can think of.”
It seems to rain an awful lot in FLA…
If Phil/AJ face hitters, then it’s fine. If they don’t, then that makes no sense…..I never understood why the Yankees didn’t have AJ face hitters (or Andy for that matter) the last time they got rained out.
The state of Florida needs a dome…
Erin, it will be as riveting as the fungo golf game, lol. I think Phil should hit against AJ and vice versa, lol.
Game has been cancelled.
Seriously, the Yankees should move their ST camp to AZ.
Betsy,
‘Ya think the Yankees haven’t done this before?
It’s not rocket science.
I think this staff has demontrated an understanding on how to get ready for the season.
As to Phil and Joba, maybe AJ and Andy should go tomorrow and Phil/Joba pitch in a minor league game…

I respectfully disagree with this because Pettitte and Burnett are veterans and their jobs are secure. Pettitte and Burnett should pitch in a minor league game. Chamberlain and Hughes should pitch in a major league game with Giarardi in the dugout.

Right. They have a multi-million dollar complex in Tampa, the family lives in Tampa, but, they need to move 2500 miles away to Arizona and build a new complex.

So the land and building are worthless if sold?

It seems to snow a lot in the northeast, too. What’s your point?
As long as the Steinbrenner Family owns the team, they aren’t moving anywhere.
They have a state if the art facility. They will just take it indoors today to get their work in.
It’s not a big deal.
“It seems to snow a lot in the northeast, too. What’s your point?”
Which is why they have ST in FLA.
You are taking way too literally.
TYankees will move from Tampa when they are the only team remaining in Florida, and not before. They draw a ton there. In Arizona, while they would be the Yankees, would be only one of many, many teams in the Phoenix area.
Will Burnett and Hughes pitch in a simulated game today? If so, how does that impact the so-called 5th starter competition?
“So the land and building are worthless if sold?”
In Florida, in 2010?
You can buy whole towns in Florida for pennies on the dollar Rich.
I’m not trying to start a fight, just pointing out Florida has been hardest hit by the mortgage/financial crisis, and it isn’t even close.
Yankees would get anywhere near the investment back they sank into the complex if they moved.
NOT EVEN CLOSE.
Prediction: No matter how the pitching realignment shakes out, Chamberlain will make this scheduled start in the major league game tomorrow.
