Chad, going back two threads, these 5 Questions posts are great. But do you plan on posing 5 Questions to a major leaguer that we’ll actually be watching this season?
Chad-
I guess I’m confused by something in your post.
You have listed Winn as a player in both Intra Squad games.
Are they at different times ?
I thought the games were concurrent.
What is the weather like today? Hopefully they get this game in. Yesterday I thought I had to choose between the Yankees and the Syracuse game…then the Ys got rained out and Cuse didn’t really need me to watch!
Nice interview w/ Johnny D, he had all good things to say about his time w/ the Yankees.
If Joba can’t make a good showing against the lineup he is going to face today I guess he deserves to go to the BP.
How can Joe possibility weight a performance against this lineup fairly ?
It would seem they are offering him the perfect opportunity to be completely dominant.
How is this a good test ?
Guess I don’t get it.
I did see Bob Lorenz post a message to mother nature that he’d buy her a beer if she didn’t rain out the game. So it doesn’t sound very good. lol
It’s sunny here in clearwater. They’ll get the game in.
And Phil is probably going to face Philly scrubs as well for just a few innings.
What am I missing ?
re: Jesus Montero
Butch Wynegar will be with Montero every step of the way at AAA to do what’s necessary to polish his defensive progress.
If a tandum of Montero / Cervelli is to be the catching future of the Yankees, they may want to consider Austin Romine as a corner OF.
He’s too good of a bat to let get away regardless of who a trade is for.

That’s good to hear!
Lineup sucks, thanks for the rain out yesterday
I would trade Cervelli before I converted Romine to a corner OF….
Ugh, I hate that the pitchers have to hit. AJ, Phil – just stay out of the way of the ball.
No DH today ??????
I hope AJ just walks the bases and doesn’t even swing.
Same for Phil.
I guess the Yankees had no choice on this one ?
Otherwise, why expose your guys to the risk.
I started the five questions thing as a way to get to know some of the non-roster guys and some of the minor league guys. I never really intended it as a series for the big league players. There’s a lot written about those guys anyway, and there will be even more as the spring continues.
As for Winn in both instrasquad lineups, he’s going to hit against both groups of pitchers. The guys who are hitting aren’t playing the field (other than the catchers).
BryanHoch Regarding numerous inquiries, the 10am intrasquad game at George M. Steinbrenner Field is NOT open to fans. 2 minutes ago
OH man WFAN is killing me right now w/ Tiger Woods …. I see Randy Winn still has a spot here, btw thanks for pushing Gardy this ST.
Bright spot is Nunez, Russo and Nino get 3 maybe 4 ABs today.
Oh, ok, Chad. Thanks. I did not realize that was your original intent. Sorry, I must’ve missed that somehow.
But if you have a chance to speak with Johnson now that he’s back with us, and Granderson because he’s completely new to the organization, that would be most appreciated.
I think they should just skip the pitchers AB’s in ST if there is no DH. The games mean nothing.
MTU, if Montero is playing in the intrasquad game that’s probably why no fans are allowed. He’s a liability.
blake
My bet is that they will skip the pitchers ab’s. No reason for them to bat at all.
Chad
Great way to integrate the minor league discussion into the blog!
Tarheel,
One would hope that would be the case.
I would assume the Yankee decision makers are going to spend a considerable amount of time cogitating on the 5th starter decision.
The quality of the data they use to make such a decision is
extremely important IMO.
Joe G. has already stated the the first 2 outing basically dont count.
That leaves what to make a fairly momentous decision ?
2 partial starts or so.
Some against scrubs.
Someone please explain to me how that doesn’t begin to desend into farce ?
I must be missing a lot. Can someone please help me out here ?
New post on the intrasquad game.
in 1969, catcher john ellis , at age 20, came up to the yankees big league team and stayed in the major leagues for the next 13 years.
the problem for him was another catcher who was a few years older than him came up at the same time, thurman munson.
ellis was blocked behind munson and was traded to cleveland where he became their starting catcher and had a very good year right away.
oh, and he was traded to cleveland for some guy named nettles.
having a multitude of catchers has happened before and while seeming to be a problem can be a very good thing.
oh, one other thing, rick dempsey became the back up the next year after ellis left.
it’s catcher deja vu all over again.
who’s going to be the new nettles this time?
MTU,
Obviously I have no way of knowing this but I think they have known for a long time who there 5th starter would be. IMO they had a guy in mind (probably Hughes) and unless he got injured or fell flat in his face in ST that’s who they were going with.
The competition IMO was to have the 5 guys push each other and also to have all 5 stretched out and ready in case of injury, as well as to showcase Mitre and Gaudin to other teams.
You just can’t make a decision on something like that based in a couple of ST appearances and to me its impossible not to have preconceived notions of who they thought should be in that spot.
Randy/Blake/Tar-
What do you think about what I said above about the 5th starter decision ?
I would really like to hear what you guys have to say.
Thanks.
Why overthink it MTU?
There are games, side sessions and bullpens in which you evaluate pitchers.
You also have information going into the spring that you want to see from each of the guys.
It’s not going to be a farce.
It’s what every team in baseball does each spring. Evaluate talent and make decisions.
This is no different from anything else teams do.
Blake-
Thanks. But if what you said is true that sucks. Just sucks bigtime.
And the whole 5th starter thing would indeed be a farce.
Sorry man but that’s how I would feel.
SJ-
I understand what you are saying fully.
IMPO that is just not enough data for such an important decision.
I’m not gonna debate it with you.
We’re just gonna have to agree to disagree on this one.
Of course there is enough data.
It’s not like they haven’t had these guys in camp before.
They know both of them very well. It’s not rocket science. It’s fundamental player evaluation.
You are making more out of it than it is.
SJ-
I don’t agree but as I said i’m not going to debate it with you.
End of story.
You ask questions looking for answers. If you get them and don’t like the answers, I can’t help you.
They don’t need 40 innings from each guy in similar circumstances to make this decision.
These are veteran baseball people. They aren’t fans.
They know what they want to see from their players.
When they see what they want, they make a decision.
It’s not as difficult as you think it is, whether you want to debate it or not.
MTU (aka GBURL)

1st we don’t know a decision for the 5th SP has been decided. 2nd, the Yanks are looking at more than the results of a SP outing. They are looking at the pitches thrown and the quality of the pitches. How many strikes and location, location, location! Also, how many pitches they command. How the change-up is working. How their consisitent their windup is for all pitches.
Lastly, a decision now means little later as well. If Joba indeed goes to the pen now, he easily could be back in midseason or sooner or next year. (Same with Phil.)
As SJ and others have been saying, Joba is most likely to go to the pen to work out his motion, windup and gain his confidence back. He excelled there earlier and should again.
