IF Sherman is correct, then what do you guys think of the 3 choices he proposed?

There are a bunch of black squirrels that roam around the Stuyvesant Town complex on the LES

    MTU,
I think its very important that they keep the possibility alive that they can both be starters long term. I think they will do that.

Keeping that alive makes them much more flexible and less reliant on expensive free agents. Its possible that they will need two starters next offseason. Both Hughes and Joba in the rotation would mean they only need one (Pettite, Vazquez, Lee, Beckett, or Webb) to round out the 2011 rotation. Without Hughes and Joba in the rotation they will need two of those instead of one.

Alex is going to have a busy day :)

I still do not get what the Yankees see in Mitre; I still think it was a horrible decision they made, keeping him over Gaudin.

It doesn’t take a lot to see that Phil has a lot more potential than Aceves (hope his back is ok), but I thought this was a telling paragraph:

*****Still, the ultimate-now franchise was not going to concede anything in the present unless they believed that Hughes’ repertoire had matured enough to warrant winning a rotation spot. That mainly came down to him refining a changeup. And the changeup he brandished Monday against the Phillies was a clincher. And the Yanks were not watching with their hearts instead of their eyes. I have now spoken to three scouts who concur that Hughes had a knockout changeup on Monday. ****

Blake, I have to imagine the Yankees want Joba to be a starter if at all possible. They need to keep him stretched out to a point where he can spot start or fill in for a few starts. Mitre as the 6th starter is unappealing to say the least, but I want Joba as the 6th starter because I would love a rotation with Phil and Joba in the pen.

BryanHoch Phil Hughes says he’s coming back on short rest to pitch vs. Phillies Friday. Sounds like he’s won, but nothing official yet.

    Betsy,

Mitre has been derailed by injuries pretty much his entire career. Last year in particular he was recovering from TJS. The stuff is there for him to be an effective pitcher. It is just a matter of him pulling it all together and staying healthy (both are no small feat though). In the first half of 2007 he was literally one of the best SP in all of baseball.

I hate how Sherman can say as if it’s fact that Hughes has won the spot, despite having nothing from Girardi or Cashman that suggests that. And of course, if he’s wrong, it’s ok because “everyone thought Hughes was going to be the #5″. Which of course wouldn’t be true.

    I do.

he can miss bats. And get ground balls.

the Yankees know this is a formula for being able to pitch in the new stadium. And that’s why he’s still on the roster. He is very good insurance, as the #6

by the way, has Aceves made it out your doghouse yet? Good luck to him with that

    “I do.

he can miss bats. And get ground balls.”

He’s not a strikeout guy and has made a career of NOT missing bats. Always had a good GB/FB ratio, but has still been awful.

in the starts i watched him last year, he was getting strikeouts. As he has this spring

Not sure why they would pitch Hughes on sbort rest this time of year.

Betsy, I don’t think they neccessarily need to spot start Joba (if he is in the pen). Just think they need to try to get him enough innings so that starting next year again would be a possible transition if they chose to do it.
Same thing with Hughes if he’s the one in the bullpen this year.

    Ledger_Yankees Gaudin’s been released. #nyy about 1 minute ago

  15. Frank March 25th, 2010 at 8:53 am

Agree with Sherman that Vazquez is the real #2 on this team. In the end it doesn’t much matter because the front four will all make 32-33 starts barring injury, but Vazquez is the team’s 2nd best starter.

  16. Jay March 25th, 2010 at 8:54 am

My guess about the 5th starter is:

Both phil & joba will pitch every 5th day 1 will start & the other will finish they will take chances (1 starts today & the other starts the next game they’re pitching then back to the 1st guy) the starter will always pitch 5 innings with the 1 coming in from the bullpen going 4 innings & 1 simulated inning if needed.

The reason to that is cuz joba was stretched out too much last year & he has to cut back a little not to push his arm & phil will be stretched out slowlly

Also with idea both will be stretched out enough so if 1 of our starters goes down with an injury 1 of the 2 can step in right in the rotation

Pls reply with your negetives to this idea

Gaudin on the other hand I believe has been a bit overrated by Yankee fans based on his short stint here. There is a reason he has been on 6 teams in 7 years. He is simply not a complete pitcher. He gets hammered by LHP. As a short reliever he really is nothing more than a RH specialist and the Yankees have plenty of guys in the pen that can get RH out. As a long man or spot starter he has a huge weakness in his game that could very easily be exposed.

Also Mitre is under team control for 2 more years. The Yankees are facing a lot of uncertainty in their 2011 rotation and Mitre is a decent guy to have around next year for at the very least depth. Gaudin also cost 3x as much. You can have Mitre for 2 years for Gaudin’s salary this year.

I don’t see anything controversial in what Sherman wrote. Just seems like a couple, three options that have plusses and minuses associated with all of them.

Personally, I’d use choice 3, Hughes with 4-5 innning starts, backed up by Joba for 3-4. That is, if all goes according to plan.

Like Joe said, in the Sherman piece, nothing goes according to plan. As in life, you always have to adjust on the fly.

bru, I don’t know who it’s going to be. When I said it could be Ace for all I know, I meant it. I just don’t take my guidance from forum speculation. Never have, never will. I leave my window open for all possibilities.

For me, something isn’t so until it is announced by the Yankee organization. Girardi and Cashman said there were five guys in contention. Now there are four. You want to think that was just a ha ha, have at. I’m content to leave it at that and wait for the results.

    lgy-

at the rate hughes and joba are being developed ,by the time they are both quality starters, they will be expensive free agents :)

  22. blake March 25th, 2010 at 9:38 am

Randy, that is a good point.
