Today in The Journal News
At 34 years old, and with a surgically repaired hip, Alex Rodriguez has cut his baseball workouts in half. He fields fewer ground balls and takes fewer swings in the cage, all in the name of staying healthy. “Every swing, you have to make it count,” he said.
Also off the field, the Yankees have made a decision about their fifth starter but Joe Girardi wasn’t ready to announceit last night. The notebook also has items on Rodriguez’s meeting with federal investigators, Javier Vazquez’s strong start, a change to the postseason schedule and five more cuts in big league camp.

pat -
There are black squirrels in Princeton, NJ. I have lived in central NJ for a long time, and Princeton is the only place I’ve seen black squirrels. The first time I saw one, while driving, it was quite a distraction!
Congratulations to the winner of the Starting Pitcher Competition, whoever it may be. I will be happy for whoever gets it and disappointed for whoever does not. I will be shocked if it is not one of the two I have in my mind.
Catch you later, all. Off to Disney Studios and the Rock-n-Roller Coaster and Toy Story Mania today.
I think you could make a good arguement for Hughes or Chamberlain getting the 5th starter role.
Personally I would give it to Hughes and I think he will get it but but I would understand the reasoning for Joba also. Both have shown encouraging signs this spring so I think I would feel pretty good about the #5 either way.
Blake-
Good morning.
You’re right a case could be made either way.
Would have loved to have been a fly on the wall during the discussions.
Blake-
As long as the Yankee Brass keeps their eye on the ball for the long term who gets the nod now does not really matter.
The possibilities for next year’s rotation should also provide some intrigue, and endless speculation.
hopefully we find out the 5th starter today…can’t put the decision off much longer!
looks like we missed a good game last night, judging by the video from mlb.com on the game last night…too bad YES couldn’t have shown that instead of nets b’ball
Pat
we don’t have black squirrels here, but they are common up in Ottawa
Doreen
have a great day
Obviously Joe couldn’t announce it until he spoke to Joba and Phil.
LOL YES Network left themselves open for a Dewey Defeats Truman sort of fame by proclaiming “It’s Hughes” on their home page simply based on Joel Sherman’s article.
We’re very fortunate, and so is Alex obviously, that his hip responded so well to the operation.
Betsy-
“We’re very fortunate, and so is Alex obviously, that his hip responded so well to the operation.”
What was the quetion posed to Alex’s hip ?
And exactly what did Alex’s hip say ?
“I’m cool”.
Question not quetion
Girardi said at the start of camp they would have a decision by March 25. Last I checked, today is March 25. Nothing has deviated from his plan.
My guess is the players have been told.
And I will tow the party line to the bitter end. Joe had to talk to four pitchers since four pitchers were being considered for that spot (four now that Gaudin is gone). And I’m sure he spoke to each one.
I never even knew that there were black squirrels! I had to google images this morning to see what they look like. Then I read about them on wikipedia. Here’s an interesting factoid. Grey squirrels can produce black offspring. I hope squirrels can read wikipedia or there are going to be some divorces out there!!!
Pat, I am an afficionado only with respect to my devotion to the little guys (and gals). I just think they are the cutest things.
“As long as the Yankee Brass keeps their eye on the ball for the long term who gets the nod now does not really matter.”
Yes indeed.
SJ
Do you think Joe G wants to keep an extra Lefty in BP especially with playing Boston early?
I still think Hughes is the #5, & Joba to the pen this year, but I think Joba starts next year.
Yes, but I’m sure they were told last night – which is why they couldn’t announce it yesterday.;
Trisha-
But.
Do you trust them to do so ?????
Ray VT, I don’t know who the 5th stater is, it could be Aceves for all I know, but I also believe that Joba will be a starter for the Yankees at some point.
Ah, YES took down that headline; good.
garcia pitched a great game yesterday i believe it was
man if he can stay healthy he will move quick
fantastic stuff
BTW, Trisha, I love your pic. Very nice!
I only hope whoever gets selected this year does great & the others do too. I am anxious to see this team play in 2010 for real!!!
If Doc Halladay can help an injury riddled AJ Burnett stay healthy then there might just be hope for Garcia.
Now all we need is a “mentor” for him.
Of course, I am am strange, but I think Gila monsters are cute.
Cuter than squirrels.
it will not be ace
it was always between hughes & joba
like i said all indications are that hughes has it wrapped up
i also don’t think girrardi will keep 2 lefties
won’t get any innings
can’t see logan staying at the expense of losing a very important long man like mitre
joba
mo
ace
marte
park
robertson are in with the starting 5 wich leaves one more
mitre ???
unless we carry 13 pitchers wich i don’t see
posada
cervelli
tex
cano
jeter
arod
gardner
granderson
swisher
johnson
winn
thames
pena
cc
burnett
pettitte
vazquez
hughes

robertson
ace
marte
park
mitre
MTU, I think they are top-notch in their planning, on top of things that we haven’t even thought of, and always thinking ahead.
So I think the answer to that would be an unequivocal yes! Some posters act like they think the Yankee organization exists under a turnip patch and would just fall apart without their guidance. (not referring to you; it is a generic statement)
Trisha,
OK. anything you say.
I think the Yankees know what they are doing.
Ray,
Thats a possibilty. Although, I think it’s easier to piggyback Hughes’ starts early in the season To manage his innings since other guys are stretched out.
Could go either way though.
Girardi would not have told the media they have reached a decision without telling the players first.
Why put guys needlessly through a sleepless night?
That’s not how he operates.
They had a night game. They had all day to talk to the pitchers.
This isn’t rocket science. Especially since they have known for a long time who they wanted in the slot.

I think the Yankees know what they are doing.
I agree SJ! I am excited for this team as I see tons of potential.
bru, I don’t know who it’s going to be. When I said it could be Ace for all I know, I meant it. I just don’t take my guidance from forum speculation. Never have, never will. I leave my window open for all possibilities.
For me, something isn’t so until it is announced by the Yankee organization. Girardi and Cashman said there were five guys in contention. Now there are four. You want to think that was just a ha ha, have at. I’m content to leave it at that and wait for the results.
Well MTU see the only reason I say that is because I never saw the Yankees come to this forum for advice. I did see people here ballastic last season when their advice wasn’t taken!!! Sergio Mitre should be up! Sergio Mitre’s a dog! Mark Melancon should be up! Mark Melancon should be used, what the hell are the Yankees doing!!! How stupid can they be? WHAT? They’re not using Melancon again? Why do they even have him up here? WHAT???? Again????
And I sat back and watched the Yankees win the world series. Aha! I said to myself. Here I was thinking that the Yankees were a stupid organization, never paying attention to the forum unrest, and they end up winning the world series.
So that’s what makes me think that they know what they’re doing. See?
if arod cuts back on workouts, what else can he work on to “fill the time”? stretching (probably not lifting)? mentoring younger guys? viewing more game film? more public appearances (at the stadium) on game day (meet/greet fans)?
