Alex Rodriguez is here and in the lineup. The Yankees lineup also includes Marcus Thames batting second, probably to maximize his at-bats against left-handed starter Jamie Moyer.

Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Nick Swisher RF
Curtis Granderson LF
Brett Gardner CF

I really hope Joba has a mentor on the team. The kid has a lot on his plate between his family and the expectations of being a Yankee.

    Well….I guess that’s good news.

Chad this is a really cheap way to get multiple hits from the same person.(keep putting new threads every minute).

    Repost again.

Will the 3rd graders complain tonight if we lose the game?

    =========

If Chad goes roman numerals tonight for the score, its likely they wont even know what hit em. If that fails. Theres always the Lohud stand in a corner with a dunce cap timeout option.

  8. m March 26th, 2010 at 3:48 pm

So, someone wrote an article the other day that Granderson was the CF. Girardi said nothing’s been decided. Did he put Granderson in LF just to tweak that writer?

    Bob,

I think you have something there. Joba was probably under a lot of stress last season.

And I do think that Mo is the one who will take Joba on as his ward.

  13. blake March 26th, 2010 at 3:50 pm

Because they want a guy on the bench that can hit left handed pitching and Thames has a track record of doing it.

  14. Rick March 26th, 2010 at 3:52 pm

So if Thames hits 50 yr old Jaime Moyer… it means he can hit Lester, David Price, Cliff Lee, Liriano, Danks, Brett Anderson, etc.?

  15. tk March 26th, 2010 at 3:53 pm

    WYH,

I completely agree with you about the schedule. The Yankees seem to have a bad habit of starting out slowly and actually have one of the AL’s easier schedules this season. So if they are able to hold their own through this first part of the season, it will be really tough for anyone to catch them.

ML, I don’t literally mean that people are rooting for AJ to get hurt; any normal human being wouldn’t root for any player to get hurt, even on another team. I’m just saying that it almost seems like people are waiting for him to get hurt. Anyway, it’s not a big deal.

Glad to see Alex in the lineup. I’m confident that Thames, if he makes the team, will help us during the season, but it would be nice to see him string a few hits together.

  17. he's gotta be better then Thames, No? March 26th, 2010 at 3:54 pm

Joba Chamberlain on losing 5th starter battle to Phil Hughes: “Could be worse. They could be talking about sending me down.”

Perhaps this may help dispel the myth about the difference between wanting to have a certain role and the difference between want to have ANY major league one.

Oh a semi-related note, I hope to god Hughes has a good outing tonight. Gonna be a LONG 5 days if he doesn’t…

Jermaine Dye is still out there. Would assume he can be gotten cheap. He is a righty so how is he vs. lefties?

  24. Rick March 26th, 2010 at 3:57 pm

Dye would be a much better option than Thames….

“I really hope Joba has a mentor on the team. The kid has a lot on his plate between his family and the expectations of being a Yankee.”

    ==============

    excellent, and overlooked, point.

I remember seeing Joba and Phil talking to Roger and Andy in their first season and I thought that was great.

I would think Andy still shares wisdom with ‘the kids’ and CC and AJ seem like pretty good clubhouse role models…

but perhaps a guy like Joba misses a guy like Rocket (though perhaps he isn’t the best role model :) – he may have been able to relate well to Joba)

Joba might need some fire lit under him – the kind of fire that was inherent in a guy like Clemens.

  26. vb03 March 26th, 2010 at 3:58 pm

Thames’ career OPS against lefties is .845.

ST at-bats are a tiny sample size.

  27. CountryClub March 26th, 2010 at 3:58 pm

Anything Thames does against Moyer is not exactly going to instill confidence, haha. I mean he throws batting practice level fastballs.

  28. Tom B - March 26th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

Dye is just as bad, and likely isn’t signed yet because he won’t accept a bench job.

  29. tex's friend March 26th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

im stunned no one has even picked up dye yet. we have 2 million freed up. go get him.

  30. stuckey (”its ok to agree to disagree”) March 26th, 2010 at 3:59 pm

The difference between Dyne and Thames is Dye might not be willing to sit on someone’s bench for a couple million or less.

He’s had a different career than Thames, he might not be willing to try to hand on at any cost.

  31. CountryClub March 26th, 2010 at 4:00 pm

Hughes is pitching on short rest and will probably only throw 60 or so pitches. Just get through the game healthy.

Stuckey, he’s going to have more than a few bad outings this year, so people had better get used to it. It doesn’t speak well for their baseball acument if the bash Phil and/or the Yankees every time he struggles. I like the old expression if you aren’t there for the funeral, don’t be there for the wedding (or something like that). In other words, it’s not a good thing to be a fair weather fan.

Still with Dye, i wonder if we have even looked into it? I know we dont win or lose on the 25th man, but the reason thames is there is to replace gardner late against tough lefties. And if Gardner doesn’s come through, Dye would have the opening to start.

  41. Betsy -Romine wasn't built in a day March 26th, 2010 at 4:05 pm

I don’t get the constant need for motivation some players have – they’re professionals, they shouldn’t need to have someone kick their butts to get them going.

Phil and Joba are lucky to have wonderful veterans they can talk to and who are willing to share their knowledge: Mo, Andy, CC, AJ… I think this kind of mentoring is invaluable. It’s nice to get instruction from a pitching coach, but I sort of equate him to a parent while your teammates are like your brothers and sisters. In many ways, you’re closer to them and maybe even pattern yourself after them.

  42. stuckey (”its ok to agree to disagree”) March 26th, 2010 at 4:06 pm

Betsy, I agree with you in principle, but I’d be remiss not to remind you to give player’s like Gardner the same benefit of the doubt you want others to give Hughes.

I agree Hughes has the superior minor league resume, but as a ML starter, he hasn’t been all that much better than Garnder has.

Gardner has had his moments of brilliance as well. The 5-5 game, his June and July 2009.

Again, NOT comparing the players, I’m comparing the sentiment.

Give player’s room to prove themselves in the long run.

  43. Boston Dave - XXVII March 26th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

    RE: Hughes and 5th starters

what was the average ERA of a 5th starter in the AL last year? what about the AL East?

what should be considered a positive season for Phil this year?

    10 wins? a mid 4′s ERA? an average ERA+?

curious what the expectations are from most of you, taking everything into account.

  44. Pat M. March 26th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

    Next they need to do:

    ALDS Game 2
    WS Game 2

    WS Game 6

  46. ML March 26th, 2010 at 4:08 pm

    Betsy,

Fair enough. I’m also happy to let it go at that.

And just to prove it, I wholeheartedly agree with your comments about Hughes. If his first outing is subpar, then there will be plenty of fans on this blog screaming for him to be taken out of the rotation. Fans need to realize that every performance can’t be great.

Hughes has top of the rotation potential and was the #1 prospect in baseball.

  49. Boston Dave - XXVII March 26th, 2010 at 4:09 pm

    Betsy,

I agree with you RE: motivation…

but I suppose they’re so used to dominating at lower levels and having people kiss their butts, that perhaps they’ve never had to give 110% before and really dedicate themselves.

Plus they are kids who feel invincible and all of a sudden have fame and fortune.

I dunno. If I had their jobs, I’d surely give it everything I had so I agree with you.

  50. tex's friend March 26th, 2010 at 4:09 pm

Honestly with Phil, if he keeps us in games, and makes it through the year without getting hurt, it will be a successful year. I say 12-7 ERA 4.30. Just a guess though.

  51. blake March 26th, 2010 at 4:09 pm

The fact that nobody has signed Dye probably means there’s a good reason why.

He wouldn’t accept the same role that the Yankees want Thames for and probably wouldn’t accept it for the same money either.

Id be happy with a 4.5 and 13 wins. Cant ask more from a 5th starter. I just hope he can stay healthy through out the year. That IMO has been the only thing thats held him back. The comparison is there because you should have patience with all the Yankees, not just because they’re a top-drawer talent.

But if a player (young or old) dogs it, lets stuff go their head, or acts like a diva then it’s fine to get on them.

But not just because they’re a fringe player.

Oh boy, I’m about to go all Psych 202 on you all again today.

I know the perception this these guys are wealthy and privelaged and shouldn’t need any other motivation than the reward of playing at that level, but the human mind has a funny way of adapting to its environment and circumstances.

What’s extraordinary to most people becomes routine if it becomes your routine.

Now professions like major sports tend to weed out these people, because the competition is so fierce, but regularly people with extraordinary physical gifts but outlooks just like Ron Livingston in “Office Space” make it through.

It’s why wealthy people, or people who have enviable jobs are really no more happy or successful at personal relationships than anyone else.

“Normal” is the most relative thing there is…

    Class dismissed.

  61. D Town March 26th, 2010 at 4:15 pm

  62. blake March 26th, 2010 at 4:15 pm

  64. pat March 26th, 2010 at 4:15 pm

As I said in the previous thread, Alex never said he was going to miss todays game. He also never said he was going to Buffalo or meeting with the Feds today.

Maybe all or some of the above happened but maybe anonymous sources were wrong and none of them happened.

I guess this is directed towards me. I have nothing but respect for Moyer’s career. But based off of last yr, at his age, he’s done. And even if he isnt, Thames is a FB hitter facing a pitcher that throws 80mph FB’s. I dont see how anybody can take anything positive out of him getting a couple of hits tonight.

Ummm, not if you understand the point.

To make the argument your prejudices are more well informed than someone else’s is a hard argument to win.

People have seen Phil Hughes and they don’t think he’s any good. They even might be right but are likely making a rash judgment.

That precept can be applied to anyone.

The difference is in the process and how those results came about. No one watched Joba last year and thought, ‘yea this guy is gonna dominate someday’. He looked really bad.

  72. Betsy -Romine wasn't built in a day March 26th, 2010 at 4:19 pm

BD, I think we should forget wins as those are often a product of bad luck (or good luck, depending on the run support). I would be happy with an ERA around 4 or a little above, but that’s not in a vaccum. If Phil has a few bad starts that completely skew his numbers, but he has some games where he’s just dynamite, I’ll take that as well. Consistency, I expect, will come next year.

  73. Rick March 26th, 2010 at 4:19 pm

With the way Thames is swinging the bat, and Gardner’s ability to get infield hits, force an error, etc…. I’m not even sure I want Thames pinch hitting for Gardner.

It doesn’t always need to be the 3-R HR.

The Yankees are not knocking down the bar in CF. That thing is a cash cow.

They did make a couple of changes that I heard of recently. One is that they are opening the gates 2 hours before game time instead of 3. The other is that they added a big parking rack for people who bike to the game(more people do that you would think). They took a lot of heat last yr for having limited bike parking.

Stuckey, you beat me to the punch but made all my points.

Human beings all need motivation at some point or another. Because they’re professional athletes doesn’t exempt them from the boredom factor that is inherent in all professions at one point or another. Have we forgotten the automatic “letdown” what happens right after the Yankees play the Sux? Do you remember the year when Seattle won the pennant well before the end of the season? They had to keep themselves motivated by trying to continue to win series.

We need to stop thinking of athletes as being superhuman because they are not. They may be extraordinarily good at what they do, but they are still human.

If fans could remember that we’d have a lot less whining and complaining on the forum.

I saw the tickets go onsale at noon on 4/10 for the May 21st date in AC. Sadly, I can’t go that day- its hair day/hibernation weekend

That AJ-Lester matchup can be very dicey for us.

  85. RS March 26th, 2010 at 4:23 pm

It wasn’t just the 4.75 ERA that doomed Joba, but also the fact that even before the Yankees messed with his schedule, he was barely averaging 5 innings per start.

Hughes has also had trouble pitching deep into games in his short major league career, but he always showed superior command in the minors, and with his better developed changeup and cutter, I think he can give the Yankees closer to 6 innings per start.

  86. Betsy -Romine wasn't built in a day March 26th, 2010 at 4:23 pm

BD, but not every player is like that, so I wouldn’t want to generalize. Joba may just need some growing up.

If the Yanks were so sold on Gardner, they wouldn’t all these reports (not speculation like there was with Holliday, but reports citing anonymous Yankee officials) that we are going all-in for Crawford.

Contrary to popular belief, there was never any real reports about us going after Holliday aside from fans speculating or media saying “don’t count the Yankees out because they are the Yankees”.

  90. blake March 26th, 2010 at 4:26 pm

    stuckey,

Wasn’t the question, why do fans cut Hughes slack but not Gardner? I was telling you why. Sorry if I misunderstood the point you were trying to make.

  91. ML March 26th, 2010 at 4:27 pm

    Country Club,

Moyer may be old, and perhaps he’s done, but if so the reason is not that his velocity has declined. He was never a hard thrower. It’s not all about speed. Moyer has been successful because he knows how to keep hitters off balance so they aren’t expecting the fastball when he throws it. Also, location is key. If a pitcher hits his spots, it can be difficult to hit him even if his FB is in the 80s.

I’m not going to freak out on Thames either way based on today’s game. It’s the definition of small sample size. But I’d rather see him get hits than not. The big think is just that he gets a few more ABs against a lefty.

  92. Carl C. March 26th, 2010 at 4:28 pm

I agree, Joba. It is supid, but what can you do?

Go to the pen, dominate, show the fans/mediots that they were wrong and get ready to reclaim the spot in 2011 and become the golden child again… JOBAMANIA!

  93. I like Inge March 26th, 2010 at 4:29 pm

You guys realize that 30 days from now Chamberlain has a very good chance to have logged 10-12 relief innings, 15 Ks, a bunch of holds, and working smoothly in the 8th to set-up Mo. Actually I expect that to happen cause I expect Chamberlain to perform well all the time.

Why over analyze young Chamberlain because he did not get the starting job? Its a waste of time. He’s pitching the 8th and he’s going to rock it.

  94. m March 26th, 2010 at 4:29 pm

  95. R+ March 26th, 2010 at 4:30 pm

Gardner IS going to get more slack than Hughes because Gardner can hide in this lineup and even if he is awful, we may not even notice or care because he is playing great defense.

Hughes is 1 of 5. His starts are going to be magnified and he can’t “hide”. Every start is going to be analyzed and he can lose games for us if he gets lit up. Gardner won’t lose games us if he goes 0-16 in a week.

    No.

The question is why criticize other people for their particular prejudices if you have many of your own?

I may often sound like a know-it-all (guilty as charged) but one thing I will admit too, I’m not better at predicting the careers of major leaguers than anyone else, and I suspect not many people are any better or worse than I.

The grass is always greener. Usually there’s a lot of pressure that goes with having that kind of withholding. A lot. A ton of high-pressure responsibility and in a lot of cases, a life that is a lot more public than private.

I am happy to have my comfortable little life where I’m happy with the simple things and have the pleasure of spending time rooting for my favorite team with others who feel the same way, without being subject to the harsh criticism and demanding nature of same. You guys are putting words in my mouth. There are plenty of people on this board who think you have to throw 92+ to be a good pitcher….I am not one of them. But when you lose the ability to spot your pitches AND you throw 80 mph AND you’re pitching to a guy who is a dead red hitter, well I’m not going to be too surprised if Thames hits one 450 feet.

However, the point of original post is that I also think Thames is toast. So I can care less if he hits a 600 ft homer tonight and I can especially care less because he’s facing a pitcher that’s shot. Again, he’s not shot because he throws under 90; he’s shot because he’s shot.

I remember Jerry Seinfeld once telling Larry King that the best thing about having all that money he made was simply not having to worry about money anymore.

You are right, the simpler things in life don’t necessarily have a price tag attached to it. However, it would be nice to live a life where the anxiety of worrying how to make ends meet is no longer an issue. I work hard, pay my bills, invest my money, raise my kids … and live with the fear that it still might not be enough. It would be nice to not have to worry about such things anymore.

While I’m on the subject, I propose a lengthy dyspeptic, name-calling debate over which role Angela Cartwright is most famous for. I think it was as Penny in Lost and Space, and anyone who disagrees is a [fill in your epithet of choice].

Cash did say (on Francesa) that the best possible scenario FOR 2010 would be to have both Hughes and Chamberlain in the bullpen and have Ace, Mitre, or Gaudin win the 5th spot. He then followed that up by saying that specific scenario would not be beneficial to the Yankees in the long run.

Logically, that makes perfect sense. If one of those last 3 were able to fill out the 5th starter need, the Yankees would then have a nearly indestructable bullpen. But, as Cashman said, it would not help them long term. Hence why the situation is what it is right now.

And when I looked at the homes of the people in Haiti, those that still have homes, I almost felt guilty that I was in a warm home with food on the table and a nice television on which to watch the Yankees.

I certainly don’t mean to moralize, so I apologize if it appears I am doing that. I just think that sometimes we need perspective to help us realize that with all we don’t have, we still have so much more than most of the rest of the world.

That said, I certainly understand your point. These are tough times.

No. You know what I mean. How’d you end up on the wrong end of Tobacco Road? :P

In closing, when I hooked up with her she had finished the Poseidon Adventure….I saw her a few years ago, as she still has a place in Laguna Beach and still owns a Art Gallery and a Pottery shop….Still looked good….

    I have beyond cracked-

A new kid came up to me and said “I have a dumb question for you”.

I told him, “There are no dumb questions. Only dumb people.” LOL

Found a spinoff series that was bigger than the original.

Apparently, Andy & Opie were guests on The Danny Thomas show.

By the way, I drive a 1997 Acura by choice. I like being without debt (as much as possible) and I’ll be damned if I am going to take on any more debt just so I can say I drive a “better” car. As long as this baby runs, it’s my car of choice. My dad always taught us that a car was transportation, nothing more, nothing less.

Then again, I never really cared what people thought of what I did, said, or drove. :) I think I’m about as society conscious-less as one can get and still be within some bounds of good taste.

    :D

m, this is true…you didn’t go to Duke did you?

  173. Pat M. March 26th, 2010 at 5:31 pm

Wave as long as Duke bellies up tonight…..I place 50.00 on the money line for Purdue to win, it’ll pay of at 190.00…..Got to go….Disco Stu is back…Very cool

I can listen to a Granderson interview all day.

  175. Betsy - Romine wasn't built in a day March 26th, 2010 at 5:35 pm

Boy, Curtis Granderson is practically perfect, lol. He was just on with Francesca (good interview, by the way) and he gave the most pefect answers. Mike asked if he had a preference between LF and CF and CG said he didn’t, he just wanted to be sure he didn’t make a silly mistake and bat out of order, lol. Mike asked him if he was always this “easy” and Granderson said he is easy to please, that the only thing that bothers him is people complaining (if you want to complain about something, then change it). He came off as unbelievably smooth, but not in a smarmy way at all. I just love this guy.

  176. m March 26th, 2010 at 5:35 pm

Nah. My dad lives in the area. Gave my son Duke gear when he was younger. Son almost went there, but stayed west.

Color of the sky? Seriously? You got through dental school with that kind of logic?

  177. Betsy - Romine wasn't built in a day March 26th, 2010 at 5:36 pm

Trish, lol, I have no idea what Cash Cab is. By the way, I forgot the LOL at the end, so my comment sounded like I was annoyed, even though I wasn’t.

  178. blake March 26th, 2010 at 5:36 pm

“I can listen to a Granderson interview all day.”

Hes a really smart dude, one of these that might quit playing early because ESPN and MLB network will be all over him to come work there.

  179. Betsy - Romine wasn't built in a day March 26th, 2010 at 5:38 pm

Good for Curtis that he loves to eat different kinds of foods…he’ll find NY a total melting pot. He’s from Chicago, which is a fantastic city in its own right, so I knew he’d like NY.

I never saw Lost in Space, so for me, Angela Cartwright’s most famous role was in Sound of Music, lol.

I’m not sure who asked this, but Phil is pitching a shortened outing tonight to line him up behind Javy. Of course, depending on what the Yanks decide to do with his innings, it might be moot. I’m not sure how many pitches he’s slated for tonight.

“Color of the sky? Seriously? You got through dental school with that kind of logic?”

good logic IMO.. in all seriousness, Duke is a great school and if your son almost went there then he must be a sharp kid. I lived between Durham and Chapel Hill for 4 years…Great place!

    Blake,

I just heard that interview. What a down to earth guy. Like really down to earth guy. Low maintenance ball player with all star talent. The dude is a star who is going to be a bigger star in NY.

    Grandy all the way!!

  183. m March 26th, 2010 at 5:42 pm

It is to line him up behind Javy, but there must be more to it than that because he’s not projected to start for a while once the season opens.

CC & Javy pitched on the same day yesterday. :?:

I agree, I think he is perfect for the big stage and Yankee fans are gonna love this guy.

  185. Don March 26th, 2010 at 5:45 pm

Angela Cartwright was very famous from Make Room For Daddy, after all it was on for seven years and was one of the big shows of that period (1950s)

“I did a tax return last week for a guy with a W-2 of 1.4 million dollars. That was infuriating.
He had more withholdings from NY state than I made last year”
The grass is always greener.
(well the criticism I get here is certainly nothing compared to the barrage of those who have a lot more$$$$ than I.)

I’d take the one year of high pressure and then take the next 20 years off.

Is tonight’s game on TV? It is not marked as “watch” on MLB.TV
