Can the manager still catch?

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Apr 01, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

Jorge Posada woke up with a stiff neck and can’t play today. P.J. Pilittere will get the start.

Mitch Abeita is here from the minor league complex, but the Yankees might have an extra catcher drive over just in case.

Doesn’t sound like a serious issue for Posada. Sounds like he just slept on it wrong.

UPDATE, 12:29 p.m.: Brandon Laird has also been scratched. Sore elbow.

Would Joe Girardi be allowed to catch if he wanted to?

  5. CountryClub April 1st, 2010 at 11:32 am

Didn’t this happen last yr with Jorge too? I think it was during the season.

  6. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 1st, 2010 at 11:32 am

My first inclination was to worry, but then I remembered that Jorge occasionally gets stiff necks; I’m sure he had a couple during the season last year.

I actually think Joe probably could catch for a few innings; he does keep himself in great shape.

Blake, I appreciate the explanation. I guess Phil seems fine with it. If he couldn’t throw them both at the same time, we probably would have heard about it by now. Now if I am walking down the street and someone asks me about this, I can give them an answer, lol.

Girardi is still in awesome shape.

I have no doubt he could do it if it weren’t against the rules

  8. blake April 1st, 2010 at 11:35 am

    Betsy,
Actually the clockwise/counterclockwise is opposite of what I said before..I confused myself there for a second.

  9. NYY626 April 1st, 2010 at 11:37 am

Giradi could definitly pull it off

  10. Bronx Born April 1st, 2010 at 11:38 am

Dang was hoping to see Jorge today esp since ARod and Jete not coming. Oh well its still Yankee baseball and I am goin to the game… in fact leaving pretty soon.

  11. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 1st, 2010 at 11:45 am

Blake, so the change is counterclockwise and the cutter clockwise? We’re just talking a slight moving of the wrist, correct, not something that would cause a wrist injury?

  12. NYYROC April 1st, 2010 at 11:47 am

The cutter and change are both thrown with the ball gripped slightly off center. That plus finger pressure gets the ball to spin the way they want. Not much wrist action, unlike a curve.

  13. blake April 1st, 2010 at 11:52 am

Betsy, right. With the cutter its more about just getting more pressure on the outside of the ball so as to create clockwise spin. The circle depends on who is throwing it I guess. I used to actually try to turn my wrist over when I threw it to try to get more movement. The important thing is to keep that circle on the inside of the ball..shouldn’t hurt your arm if thrown correctly.

NYYROC and Blake, thank you! Sheesh, I could never be a pitcher even if I had a great arm – way too many complications.

  18. upstate kate April 1st, 2010 at 11:55 am

wow, did anyone else’s blog view just change?

  19. CountryClub April 1st, 2010 at 11:57 am

I like the new blog design. It loaded much faster and just looks cleaner.

  20. Lardin April 1st, 2010 at 11:57 am

When is the last time Giradi caught Mo? Whats the difference between Mo now and Mo in 1996? Chad can we find out?

  21. Clare April 1st, 2010 at 11:57 am

    Erica,

Do you have any suggestions for how to find a good local accountant (in Texas)?

    Thanks so much.

Really, CC? My comments don’t post. I have to exit out and get back in to see that they posted – this is really, really, really slow.

  29. m April 1st, 2010 at 12:03 pm

Just clicked on stats. There’s the minor league stats people were asking about. Linked to USAToday.

If you’re looking for feedback, the only thing is the font’s a lot smaller.

    Thanks for working round-the-clock, Jeff.

  30. Pris April 1st, 2010 at 12:03 pm

is it just me or the new blog format/layout/platform doesnt work on Firefox? it’s all messed up and I can only view it in IE…

  31. Dave F April 1st, 2010 at 12:04 pm

It does seem to refresh very quickly. Betsy, I think the reason it was so slow is that you were caught in the change over.

  32. rodg12 April 1st, 2010 at 12:04 pm

    Well, this is different.

  33. antisocial scrooge April 1st, 2010 at 12:04 pm

some people just refuse to handle or accept change

  35. m April 1st, 2010 at 12:05 pm

And I’d bring back the obnoxious headshots of Chad. It seems much less personal.

  36. rodg12 April 1st, 2010 at 12:05 pm

    Pris -

Looks/works the same in both Firefox and IE for me…

  37. blake April 1st, 2010 at 12:05 pm

    Bring up Montero! ;)

  38. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 1st, 2010 at 12:08 pm

Perhaps so, Dave. It refreshes quickly for me, but the posting is not working so great.

    ***************

Sadly no. I would talk to your family and friends. Word of mouth and recommendations are very important.

Don’t be tricked into promises of rapid refunds either by big tax prep companies. The only true way to get a quick refund is to e-file and wait about two weeks. Anything else is just a high interest loan.

  40. blake April 1st, 2010 at 12:09 pm

I don’t know if Girardi could still catch or not but he certainly looks like he could.

  41. Erica - always OPPC - Sesame Street Mafia and GTLU supporter April 1st, 2010 at 12:10 pm

I am pretty sure that we aren’t supposed to be bolding ourselves.

I remember that it slows down & breaks the blog when too many people do it

  42. Dave F April 1st, 2010 at 12:11 pm

    Betsy,

Sorry, tried again and you are right, it loads very quickly but posts slowly.

  43. Boston Dave - XXVII April 1st, 2010 at 12:11 pm

the more I read about Slade Heathcott, the more I wonder how guys like Casey Kelly and specifically Ryan Westmoreland (prior to his health issues) were top 25 overall prospects and Slade wasn’t on any top 100 lists.

prospect lists are almost never too accurate after the top handful of guys, but I’d put my money on Heathcott being more successful than either of those 2 (though I do think Kelly will reach the majors and get a chance)

It’s nice to see a legit OF prospect in the Yanks ranks even after AJax is gone.

    ETA 2013?

  44. upstate kate April 1st, 2010 at 12:12 pm

it seems to refresh faster for me, and so far its not freezing up on me like it was last week.
if you use ctrl and scroll w/ your mouse, you can make the font bigger.

  45. Pat M. April 1st, 2010 at 12:12 pm

  46. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 1st, 2010 at 12:12 pm

  49. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 1st, 2010 at 12:14 pm

The gray is just not a good look, lol – but to be fair, Jeff said they’d get to that stuff after the major kinks are worked out.

  50. Doreen - 2010 GTLU April 1st, 2010 at 12:14 pm

  51. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 1st, 2010 at 12:15 pm

  53. Zimbo April 1st, 2010 at 12:17 pm

I wonder if Joba throws today if he would get to pitch to Abeita? Mitch was Chamberlain’s catcher at Nebraska.

  54. pat April 1st, 2010 at 12:18 pm

Girardi was asked in an interview if he could still catch a game and he said no.

  55. 86w183 April 1st, 2010 at 12:21 pm

Will this format allow us to send PMs to each other? Sometimes I would like to take a discussion/debate off the blog.

Catcher could be a concern, obviously with Cervelli struggling to stay healthy as well as Jorge turning 39 in August.

  56. Azaz April 1st, 2010 at 12:22 pm

the grey needs to be changed to yankee colors and the poster name font should be bigger then the comment.

    Chad/Jeff,

Love the tabs at the top. The link to your print stuff is much more visible now. The schedule will be a godsend. And the stats will provide the snapshot analysis that we crave.

Here’s the biggest shocker of the season so far:

Gammons, now with MLB.com, predicts the Red Sox will win the World Series this season!

  76. blake April 1st, 2010 at 12:56 pm

    That is shocking.

  77. m April 1st, 2010 at 12:57 pm

And, since you asked ;) , your main threads need some kind of formatting. The paragraphs all kind of run together.

  78. Joe April 1st, 2010 at 1:00 pm

    Test again

  79. pat April 1st, 2010 at 1:01 pm

Totally blacked out today. But the Twins and Sox are on ESPN if anyone’s interested. :?

  83. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 1st, 2010 at 1:06 pm

Now Brandon Laird is hurt? I hope he’ll be ok…….LOL I know this was posted earlier, but I just saw it now. I hope this is not a bad sign…….and I’m not superstitious; I just feel uncomfortable seeing all these injuries.

  84. jennifer April 1st, 2010 at 1:06 pm

A suggestion. The first comment should be in grey. It is very easy to skip over it.

  85. pat April 1st, 2010 at 1:06 pm

Ortiz scratched with a stiff neck. Did Jorge and Papi go to a tennis match together last night?

  86. Billy April 1st, 2010 at 1:08 pm

Nothing is shocking when it comes to Gammons and his unabashed love affair with the Sox. He probably thinks they will win 130 total games.

Again, nice new look but I think the font needs a slight increase and the names of posters need to be bolded.

I know it’s a work in progress, I’m looking forward to more blog improvements :)

This redesign is kind of a p.o.s.

It looks better than the old one, but at least the old one worked right.

  92. Phil the Thrill April 1st, 2010 at 1:19 pm

There are no links for the game.

  93. JMZ April 1st, 2010 at 1:23 pm
