Injury updates

Three quick injury updates, and one non-injury update.

Mark Teixeira
He got in a game for the first time since being hit by a pitch to the elbow on Tuesday.

“It feels really good now. Yesterday, if felt really good by the end of the day and I woke up this morning, it got better. You know your body. When you’re getting better every day, you feel pretty good. If it starts getting worse maybe, or isn’t getting better, then you start to worry, but I knew right away that I was going to be fine.”

He doesn’t like wearing protective sleeves, but he wore one today and said Joe Girardi wants him to continue wearing it until he feels no discomfort whatsoever.

Jorge Posada
He was a late scratch from today’s game because of a sore neck.

“He said he could have hit left-handed, but I don’t think they were going to change pitchers,” Girardi said

Long-term, Girardi said there is absolutely no concern about the issue. Short term, they just want to make sure he’s 100 percent for opening day. As long as he shows up in camp feeling fine in the morning, he’ll play tomorrow.

Alfredo Aceves
Not much of an update here. Girardi simply said that Aceves is better today than he was yesterday. The Yankees still plan to have Aceves pitch tomorrow.

Dave Robertson
Girardi went to check on Robertson during the game because he saw him shake his leg. He wanted to make sure nothing was wrong. Turns out, Robertson’s shoes were hurting his feet.

“Maybe it’s time to get new shoes,” Girardi said.

    “2011 Yankees”

Is the 2010 season over already?!?!?!?

  7. KhanArtist April 1st, 2010 at 4:22 pm

Curtis Granderson moving from Comerica to Yankee Stadium can have 40 HR
If Nick Swisher ends his Yankee Stadium hex, he can have 40 HR…

The Yankees could have four 40 HR hitters! (including 40 HR from the 7-8 spots)

  8. Paul April 1st, 2010 at 4:22 pm

I’d rather have Nick the Stick as the DH next year if he stays healthy rather than Posada.

Posada could be Montero’s back up and be a dynamite backup player like Lowell is for the Sox.

Was really good to finally get to see the Yanks. AJ pitched out of a troublespot or two… It was good to see him work himself out of it. Am very impressed with Pena. And Cano is so awesome on defense. I like this team.

Wow??..take a gander at this gem I found in reference to Joba:

    Betsy- who said that?

  15. STUCKEY April 1st, 2010 at 4:39 pm

“As Vb3 stated before, he wouldn’t be surprised to see Josh Beckett sign an undermarket extension to avoid the media backlash the pro-Red Sox media would spin against him.”

Right. And if you does, you and he will say “see”.

But when Jason Bay LEAVES the Red Sox, apparently without fear of the ESPN-Lord, you say what?

    “Exception to the rule?”

“Similarly, providing the Indians with the option of saving face while trading their All Star catcher in a salary dump is another advantage.”

Or, the Indians could have found and made a BETTER trade.

Why didn’t they just find a team willing to give them better players?

The Braves gave the Yankees Vasquez for what the Boston-controlled media machine described as a 4th outfielder, a lefty reliever with control issues and a A ball player.

Why didn’t the Red Sox jump in and use the machine to get Vasquez for what the machine tells every is more but is actually less, sign him to a discount extension and not give John Lackey and his 5+ Fenway ERA 5 years?

“Making it more difficult for a player to take more money when leaving via FA, making it more difficult for a FA to take more money elsewhere”

    Again, Jason Bay says hello.

I think the “Previous/Next Post” links should be at the top. Much easier than having to scroll through game thread with 5,000 comments.

  17. danny April 1st, 2010 at 4:39 pm

Joba can get minor leaguers out throwing low 90s

not going to work against the heart of the sox order. he doesn’t have the movement like hughes does where he can throw low 90s. l.

  18. Bronx Jeers April 1st, 2010 at 4:39 pm

Lowell’s so dynamite that the Sox would trade him for a bag of beans AND eat most of his contract.

Yanks are going to be spending 13 mil on a back-up catcher.

  19. SJ44 April 1st, 2010 at 4:39 pm

    Probably a moron Joba fanboy.

There are a “few” of them around.

  20. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 1st, 2010 at 4:40 pm

A poster on NYYFans. I really don’t post there anymore, but I still check in and I couldn’t believe what I read, lol. They all need anti-depressants to be honest…either that or reality checks. It makes for entertaining reading, though. I’m getting a kick out of how angry they are with the Yankees for ruining Joba and Phil, lol.

  21. Rich in NJ April 1st, 2010 at 4:40 pm

    Betsy

    Do you have a link?

  22. Rich in NJ April 1st, 2010 at 4:41 pm

Oh, Joba didn’t say it. Nevermind.

  23. Slow Man April 1st, 2010 at 4:42 pm

We gave up our #2 ranked prospect (Vizcaino, according to BBA) and a starting OF on a championship calibur team for Vazquez.

That would be like the Sox giving up Ellsbury and Casey Kelly. A starting OF and Low-A stud pitching prospect that was highly ranked.

We did not rob the Braves. We gave up equal value.

What the Sox gave up for V-Mart on the other hand… that was robbery.

  24. SJ44 April 1st, 2010 at 4:43 pm

Roy Halladay seems to do ok getting Sox hitters out throwing 91. David Robertson gets them out throwing 91.

Andy Pettitte gets them out throwing 88.

It’s not about velocity. It’s about movement and location.

There is more to pitching than the radar gun.

  25. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 1st, 2010 at 4:43 pm

SJ, that whole place is full of them. Someone started an April Fool’s Thread about how the Yankees changed their minds and put Phil back in the pen with Joba and I think they nearly had a collective heart attack. I don’t take them seriously anymore; they’re just for kicks at this point.

They must not have much faith in Joba if they think like that, to be honest; I wonder if they are even fans of his. How do you say something like that? If he gets rocked, by the way, it’s no good for the team.

  26. Rich in NJ April 1st, 2010 at 4:46 pm

Velocity increases a pitcher’s margin for error. It’s nice to have, but not essential.

The thing about Joba is the change. If he never threw that hard, no one would care, but he has.

When I saw Hughes pitch at Trenton, he was sitting at 92 and inducing tons of GBs. I think he’ll sit at 93 by June.

  27. Brian April 1st, 2010 at 4:47 pm

Better these minor injuries now while in spring training then halfway into the season when we are in a pennant race. Yanks are missin’ Gene Monahan. Hope he gets better soon and rejoins the team asap.

  28. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 1st, 2010 at 4:47 pm

SJ, but they don’t get that. I think they don’t believe Joba can succeed throwing mid to low 90s……I think they believe he needs his heat. That board has a weird relationship with Phil. That same poster (I think) was ticked off that Phil threw about 89-90 in a game against Tampa when Price hit 97 and another kid hit 93. I say ticked off because he, like so many, wonder where Phil’s velocity went. I really don’t get it. As a starter last year, he was hitting 92-94 and was doing fine (some iffy moments and a really bad outing, but also some splendid performances). Frankly, I would rather see Phil at 92-94 with 4 pitches than 96-98 with 2; I like that he’s trying to become a real pitcher.

Crazy stuff, but it gets me through the day.

  29. Manson April 1st, 2010 at 4:48 pm

The Sox have developed that reputation by ALLOWING guys like Bay, Damon, Pedro to walk away if they ask for too much $$. That is why their players feel compelled to sign with them when the Sox offer something and they really want to stay in Boston. The Sox are not going to fool around and get into a bidding war. They set a price on a player and leave it up to them.

It is not an empty threat. Boston doesn’t need to re-sign Beckett and he knows it. He needs them more than they need him. He already saw Bay miss out and go for the most money… now he is on a train-wreck team in disarray with no chance of contending. Beckett didn’t want to make the same mistake.

Beckett is smart. Taking 4 years from Boston is a much better career decision than 5 from the Mets.

  30. Doreen - 2010 GTLU April 1st, 2010 at 4:48 pm

Nice that Joba had two good outings on consecutive days. I like the Yankees’ bullpen. I like their rotation. What’s not to like?

I think the LF/9th spot will work itself out as the season progresses. But 1-8 is pretty darn good, woudn’t you say? And at least LF is not a defensive hole.

    Bronx Born -

Glad you had a good game to see on your birthday!

It is just a gorgeous day today. The flowers are flowering, the bees are a-buzzin’ and the birds are singing. Loving it! (In spite of the fact that I just surveyed our yard and the winter (snow/rain) sure left its mark.)

  31. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 1st, 2010 at 4:49 pm

Rich, I think when the weather warms up, Phil will probably sit 92-94. With him, though, it doesn’t matter…

Those guys just want to give up on players WAY too soon…

  32. SJ44 April 1st, 2010 at 4:49 pm

Just because a publication ranks a prospect at a certain level doesn’t mean the team sees it the same way.

Vizcaino was not rated the second ranked prospect in the Yankees minds.

In fact, many in the organization think Jose A Ramirez has a bigger upside.

It’s extremely rare to have a short season pitcher rated by teams in the Top 3 among their prospects.

It’s too small a sample size to make that big a leap from an evaluation standpoint.

  33. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 1st, 2010 at 4:50 pm

I think a link to the new threads should be at the top as well as the bottom – just a suggestion.

  34. austinmac April 1st, 2010 at 4:51 pm

SJ–I certainly agree their is much more to pitching than velocity. However, if a pitcher lacks the command of the pitchers you name, 90 mph fastballs get hit more than 94 mph pitches.

I think Hughes has shown suffienct command to succeed in the low 90s, but I don’t think Chamberlain is their.

  35. SJ44 April 1st, 2010 at 4:52 pm

Joba hasn’t hit 94, until this Spring, in the last two ST.

Chances are pretty strong he will sit at least 94-96 in season. Perhaps even higher when the weather warms up.

If so, that’s plenty of velocity.

  36. Doreen - 2010 GTLU April 1st, 2010 at 4:53 pm

    Manson -

You hit the nail on the head. And, for some reason, there is little sentimentalism up there – not even by the fans. Different from NY in that regard, though Cashman is starting to be a little tougher these days.

Boston is a good team to play for. They are a perennial contender and have a strong fan base and a nice history. Why wouldn’t Beckett want to stay? I don’t like the Red Sox, but you have to give them their due.

  37. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 1st, 2010 at 4:55 pm

It’s plenty of velocity if he doesn’t throw a flat FB…..

  38. Jerkface April 1st, 2010 at 4:55 pm

But when Jason Bay LEAVES the Red Sox, apparently without fear of the ESPN-Lord, you say what?

    “Exception to the rule?”

You must have missed the multiple reports from ESPN / Peter Gammons about Jason Bays health and how his knees were going to explode. He got crushed for signing with the Mets

  39. Jerkface April 1st, 2010 at 4:56 pm

I think a link to the new threads should be at the top as well as the bottom – just a suggestion.

I like the links at the bottom, the only people who would be using them are the ones who click a post to read comments. Perfect world would have the links at the top AND bottom.

I guess people who use feeds might click on individual articles and want to scroll through, but i don’t think its as big a priority as a font size adjustment on the comment section.

Oops. Well apparently the filter is still filtering certain words, even if the blog’s format has changed up. :)

Just wanted to say I agree with Jerkface’s opinion about the new threads and the font size.

But I made the observation that when I was wearing eyeglas*es, I had no problem with the font or the page colors; today I am wearing my contact lenses and both are a bit problematic. That could just mean it’s time for new contact lenses, but still…

    :)

  43. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 1st, 2010 at 5:01 pm

Yes, both top and bottom…..but it’s no big deal. I wish there was a way to notify us when Chad updates the post. I didn’t realize Brandon Laird was out of the game until much later…..but then, that’s on me I suppose, lol.

I agree the other stuff is more important – the color scheme and lack of bolding need to be addressed as well before the location of the link.

  44. Rich in NJ April 1st, 2010 at 5:02 pm

Could all the user names be bolded?

  45. Rich in NJ April 1st, 2010 at 5:03 pm

Kelly is more advanced than Vizcaino. I think Vizcaino has a chance to be better.

  46. Doreen - 2010 GTLU April 1st, 2010 at 5:03 pm

I do like the layout of the blog a lot. It’s a cleaner look. And I love the tabs at the top of the page. I do miss the pictures of Sam & Chad, but, whatever. :)

And thanks for getting rid of that tempting facebook connect thingie.

  47. Dave F April 1st, 2010 at 5:04 pm

    Jeff,
Thanks for all your work in getting the blog going. If I could suggest just a few small tweaks. Please Bold the poster name, I am sure you saw all the requests for this. And if you could get just a bit of color or darken the grey to show more of a contrast. Also new thread link on top and bottom. Again thanks for your effort.

  48. Doreen - 2010 GTLU April 1st, 2010 at 5:05 pm

    Rich in NJ -

What’s really strange is that names that are connected to a website are now lighter in appearance than regular names. In the old format, those names were bolded. And when you scroll across a hyperlink, you can barely see the change in color.

  49. danny April 1st, 2010 at 5:07 pm

    Vizcano throws mid-90s

    Kelly throws 89-90

Vizcaino throws harder and is better

    Doreen,

I don’t have facebook so I would never use it but what is wrong with the facebook connect option?

  51. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 1st, 2010 at 5:07 pm

The user names and comments are in the same font/color and are really not distinguishable from each other. Obviously we can tell the difference just by reading, but still – the names should be bolded. I wear gla sses and although I’m not having a hard time per se, it could be made more user friendly.

  52. STUCKEY April 1st, 2010 at 5:08 pm

“You must have missed the multiple reports from ESPN / Peter Gammons about Jason Bays health and how his knees were going to explode. He got crushed for signing with the Mets”

But he did anyway. I was responding to how the Boston media machine strikes fear in the hearts of players to leave.

    He left. No fear.

Got a better deal. The Mets didn’t listen to Gammons.

    What is being argued again?

  53. Jerkface April 1st, 2010 at 5:09 pm

I don’t have facebook so I would never use it but what is wrong with the facebook connect option?

It quite obviously connects your profile from facebook to your postings, so it listed your name and a link to your profile. I now know what Doreen and her husband look like. As well as where they live, what they enjoy eating or listening too, where they hide their spare set of keys, the guard rotations, and the password to their vault. It will be all be over soon.

  54. TMZ April 1st, 2010 at 5:10 pm

Is this the new way the blog is going to look or is this just a temporary thing?

  55. SJ44 April 1st, 2010 at 5:10 pm

How many times have you seen Kelly and Vizcaino pitch? Since you are basing whose better by the radar gun, I’m guessing zero.

  56. STUCKEY April 1st, 2010 at 5:10 pm

Anyone going to point that Ellsbury/Kelly is irrelevant to this conversation?

  57. Jerkface April 1st, 2010 at 5:11 pm

Got a better deal. The Mets didn’t listen to Gammons.

    What is being argued again?

I am arguing that the media shills for the Sox and tries their best to ruin the reputation of the players that leave. I don’t think I’m arguing that the Sox strong arm everyone into staying for less money, but they do take a lot of cheap shots at players prior to their departure.

  58. LGY - Child Prodigy/GB7's Bestest Buddy April 1st, 2010 at 5:12 pm

  60. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 1st, 2010 at 5:15 pm

    Jeff, thank you!!!

  61. Doreen - 2010 GTLU April 1st, 2010 at 5:16 pm

    LGY -

There’s nothing wrong with having a facebook connect. However, what happens is the name that appears here is the name you have listed on facebook. So, if that is your complete and full name, that will appear here. And if a person were to click on your name, it would take you to facebook. Again, no real problem with that, but you better know you want that. Because anyone here can click on that and get whatever information you have on your facebook site (email, etc.).

So if a person wanted to do facebook connect, first they need to set their security at facebook.

What I did was mindlessly click a button and find all that out.

Also when you post via facebook,l believe your post here will be published on facebook. Since I post here a lot, I wouldn’t necessarily want that to be on facebook. Just like I hate scrolling through all those silly facebook games that people play, I don’t want to be taking up inordinate amounts of my page with my ramblings from here! :) But that is definitely a personal preference.

I was able to log out, but it took a couple of tries.

  62. Comet April 1st, 2010 at 5:16 pm

Jeff, that’s better for the people who don’t link to a website in their name. But for those of us that do, our names are still kind of hanging in the background – even lighter than the regular font. Can you bolt those, too?

I think maybe a light blue/white alternate like the old version would make it perfect.

I pick the Yankees over the Braves!

  71. Doreen - 2010 GTLU April 1st, 2010 at 5:23 pm

I want to know where are the Sox that much better than the Yankees?

I really want to know. Because I don’t see it. They could be equal, yes. I could see that. But why is Dice-K not a question mark? Wakefield? Lester and Beckett, sure. But everyone else?

I don’t see the offense as being as big as it has been for Boston in the past.

Ah, whatver. Predictions are really meaningless. Gotta play the games.

  72. Rich in NJ April 1st, 2010 at 5:25 pm

I want to know where are the Sox that much better than the Yankees?

It is a matter of bias more than knowledge. People who grow up loving a team tend to overvalue its wealth and overlook its deficiencies. I think that is true of the ESPN crowd. But a bias doesn’t make one wrong, unless to don’t analyze it realistically. In fact a known bias can cause someone to downplay their bias which I think happens all too often with the NY media. It is a sign of intelligence to account for a known bias.

That said, when someone says Team A is better than Team B, but proceeds to provide the data in making the decision and that data clearly indicates otherwise is stupidity and arrogance. Thus, ESPN & Mr. Law!

To be semi-fair the best team does not always win the WS.

If healthy, Lester-Beckett-Lackey in a 5 or 7 game series is very good.

Heard on the radio, ncaa basketball is going to 96 teams. Now we will have to print 2 pages long brackets and try to puzzle them together. That sucks. It was hard enough following 16 games in one day. Now we’ll have anyone that recorded a win going to the dance. I wonder if that will eliminate the NIT or will they take on the winless squads to see who the best loser is? Or is that the worse loser?

I think SJ is right, though I don’t count Madden, Harper or Lupica, all of whom are annoying at best and insane at worst. The Yankees are a better team than the Red Sox and I’m sorry – Harper is picking the Sox based on a trade they MAY make?

I would love the shadings to be the light blue we had before ; the gray is depressing.

“I am arguing that the media shills for the Sox and tries their best to ruin the reputation of the players that leave. I don’t think I’m arguing that the Sox strong arm everyone into staying for less money, but they do take a lot of cheap shots at players prior to their departure.”

    Fair enough. Other are.

And btw – the media will shill for anyone who will give them something to schill with.

If the Yankees called up most any national writer and gave them off the record comments about a player, if he/she didn’t use it believe me they’d find someone that will.

Are the Rex Sox more willing to try to use the media like this. Apparently they might be.

Do other teams let that affect their decisions? I highly doubt, with the Mets being the latest example.

Just talking to general JF, not to you specifically.

“Harper is picking the Sox based on a trade they MAY make?”

Writers routinely say the Yankees will acquire what they need to address any weaknesses, strength their bench Betsy, it’s just a more specific version of that.

“Harper is picking the Sox based on a trade they MAY make?”

Same reason people are picking the Rays to miss the playoffs… because many of them cite that the Yanks and Sox will make moves at the deadline if they need to and Tampa can’t.

@Rick can you be more specific with that complaint. It was designed on a mac and we did all kinds of browser compatibility testing. Is there a specific issue you are having?

Don’t agree on Drew being better than Swisher…drew hasn’t driven in 70 in 3 years. Always hurt.

  92. Noreaster April 1st, 2010 at 6:54 pm

    But nice analysis!
