Today in The Journal News
Last week the Yankees announced Phil Hughes would be their fifth starter. On Wednesday, they announced when he will make his regular season debut. Hughes will make two starts in extended spring training before pitching in the ninth game of the year, at home, against the Angels.
Hughes was on the mound Wednesday and started his outing against Denard Span, who lined a ball into the stands, hitting — of all people — his own mother. The notebook also has items on Mark Teixeira, Alfredo Aceves, Francisco Cervelli and the competition for a second lefty in the bullpen.

keep this format, much better
Please tell me that the rumored sale of the Yankees to the Dolan’s was just another April fool’s joke.
C’mon Hal. You know you were just kidding about selling your much beloved Yankees. Weren’t you ?
I think the Yankees plan is a fine one, but I admit to already feeling itchy to see Phil on the mound. He’s had a very good spring – I couldn’t ask for more. With time and practice, I’m sure the change will become a plus pitch for him
A big whew that Denard Span’s mom is ok; that was scary.
well apparently Nick Swisher has been traded to a team in the AL West (presumably Oakland). No word yet, on who we got back
Sweeney Murti is getting ready to go on WFAN
MTU,
RAB has the inside scoop on the sale.
Betsy-
Here’s my projected breakdown for Phil’s season.
He will make a maximum of 30 starts (probably less) assuming 5-6 innings average per start( which I think is reasonable).
I am assuming 1/4 of the starts will above average. Meaning 6+ innings of < 2 runs.
1/4 will be sub par. Meaning 3-4 runs.
And approx. 1/2 will be right on expectations which would be 6 innings of 3-4 run ball.
I expect Phill to have a few games which will be positive stunners. Shutouts which will be near no no’s.
Overall record 10-12 wins with > 4.0 ERA
Probably totally wrong but this is what I am expecting.
LGY-
I know. I DO NOT want the Yankees to change hands. Why mess with success.
MTU:
That actually sounds about right to me.
Frank-
I think some people are a little too optimistic considering Phil’s developmental stage.
I’m probably totally off but I was just doing a “bell curve” model.
Anyway, it’s fun.

I don’t love Sherman, but he has written some good articles this spring and this is one of them. It’s not a negative article on Joba at all.
MTU,
Scroll down a little on that RAB article
According to my NYY calendar, which I just flipped when I got into work this morning, April is CC Sabathia month.
MTU, I don’t consider 3-4 runs in 6 innings sub-par for a 23 year old 5th starter……
I don’t believe in predictions, but even if I did, I don’t have any for Phil. I think he’s going to have some bad games simply because he’s a kid and he’s getting used to starting in the majors again. Mostly, I think he’ll be fine – and yes, he will have some brilliant games.
The only prediction I feel comfortable making is that the moment Phil struggles, the media and fans will question when Joba will replace him. Fortunately, the Yankees have seriously committed to Phil as a starter and I think the only way he gets replace is if he’s downright awful for a long period of time (or injured).
OK, you guys know today is Aprils Fools right? Swish isn’t going anywhere.

Don’t know whether this is a 4/1 joke or not, but I would think that as long as the old man is alive, the team stays in Steinbrenner hands. After that I wonder. I don’t get the sense that Hal comes anywhere close to having the passion for the Yankees that his father has.

I hope it does turn out to be a joke.
You can see what I was referring to over at RAB.
Probably just smoke w/o a fire.
LGY
sorry
Betsy-
On the sub-par that should have read >3-4 runs.
It’s April fool’s so the whole thing is bound to be a joke anyway, right ?
New Post: Lineup vs. Toronto
Almost as good as the “Waldman To YES Booth” on Mystique and Aura… “Suzyn Waldman will join Michael Kay and Tino Martinez in the Yes Network booth” is a sentence no one wants to read, April Fool’s or not.
P.S. David Cone- I will miss you this year and that’s not a joke : (
upstate,
No problemo. Every party needs a po*oper. It is just the natural way of things
