Orioles Yankees Baseball

After being rained out twice and forced into an intrasquad game once, Andy Pettitte got Dave Eiland’s forecast for Friday’s game well ahead of time. ”Dave told me several days ago there was a zero percent chance (of rain),” Pettitte said. “I was still waiting for a black cloud to move in, but there wasn’t a cloud in the sky today.”

Pettitte pitched well in only his second full start of the spring. He pitched 4.1 scoreless innings, allowing seven hits but consistently stranding the base runners. Only one of the seven hits went for extra bases. He also walked one and struck out one.

“”I felt like my command maybe could have been a little bit better with my fastball,” Pettitte said. “Other than that I felt really good. I did get a little tired there at the end which I knew was going to happen because even though I threw 100 pitched my last time out, you just can’t simulate the adrenalin and having batters in there… The biggest reason I needed it was to build my stamina up, because you can’t build your stamina up in simulated games because it’s just not real.”

Here’s the Joe Girardi audio from this afternoon. He talked mostly about the series of injuries that have hit his team in the last week of spring training.

Orioles Yankees Baseball

• After Mariano Rivera hit Felix Pie with a pitch, Girardi ran to the mound to check on his closer. Rivera said it was because he’s been sick and Girardi was checking on him, but Rivera might have simply been being polite, not wanting to call out the Orioles’ bench. “Something (was said) from their dugout,” Girardi said. “He just walked off the mound, got back on the mound… It might have been in response to my frustration the other day. It’s okay.” You might remember that Girardi got upset with the Orioles when Jeremy Guthrie hit two Yankees on Monday.

• Royce Ring was reassigned to minor league camp, leaving only Boone Logan competing to be a second lefty in the Yankees bullpen. Turns out, Zack Segovia was sent down yesterday.

• Alex Rodriguez confirmed a Daily News story that he has already met with investigators from Major League Baseball concerning his connection to Dr. Tony Galea.

• Forgot to mention this earlier: Damaso Marte said his current shoulder injury is nothing like last year’s, and might actually have been caused by his exercises that were intended to strengthen his shoulder. “Maybe too much workout for my shoulder,” Marte said. “I’ve been working hard this month on my shoulder. I never felt like this. This is new.”

• Nice job by minor leaguer Josh Schmidt to get out of a jam and strand two runners for Pettitte in the fifth. Schmidt had terrific numbers in Double-A last season and had a great winter in Venezuela, but his raw stuff has never wowed scouts.

• Nick Swisher hit his second spring home run today and will finish with a .313 Grapefruit League batting average. He’s made some adjustments that he’s hoping will lead to a higher batting average this season.

• Catcher Mike Rivera played in a game for the first time since March 20.

• The Yankees will play a group of organizational, minor league all-stars tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. Javier Vazquez will start for the Yankees and most of their regulars will be in the lineup, though they aren’t expected to play very long (especially given the injury bug that’s floating through camp). There’s still no word on which minor leaguers will be involved.

Those are obviously Associated Press photos.

Oh, this is just great. Now Betsy’s turning to sarcasm. LMAO.

  5. m April 2nd, 2010 at 6:35 pm

I missed the whole hullabaloo. Did Rivera do it on purpose? I don’t retaliation in ST. But if so, wow. Big ups for the Holy One.

Betsy – please be yourself. Those of us who know your style and appreciate your Yankee-devotion understand. You are who you are.

  8. SJ44 April 2nd, 2010 at 6:38 pm

I predict at least one Yankees-Orioles brawl this year.

They are doing a lot of yapping for a cellar dwelling team.

  10. MTU(aka GBURL) April 2nd, 2010 at 6:38 pm

Mo hitting Pie was just a Holy roller getting away from him. ;)

  11. Chad Jennings April 2nd, 2010 at 6:39 pm

No, I don’t think Rivera hit Pie on purpose. I think the Orioles were upset along the lines of, “See Joe, sometimes a pitcher misses inside and hits a guy.” Girardi yelled at their guy, so the Orioles yelled at his guy. That’s the way I took it.

  12. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 2nd, 2010 at 6:39 pm

Joe, thanks! It’s starting to get really aggravating when everything I post is questioned. I post one lousy article on Buchholz and Becca bites my head off.

I do not look forward to these O’s games at all…

Please don’t stop worrying I want everything to go right this year.

It provides order in the Yankee Universe. :)

    SJ-

    Speaking of brawls.

The one I’m looking forward to is the one with the Rays.

And I’m very much hoping Maddon will be right in the middle of it. ;)

  17. m April 2nd, 2010 at 6:42 pm

    Chad,

Way to burst my bubble.

I thought Mo was above that anyway. That’s why my respect would’ve went up a couple of notches if it was on purpose.

So. How many hit batsmen over the course of his career?

  18. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 2nd, 2010 at 6:42 pm

MTU, I don’t get it – and this is really annoying. How exactly am I worrying? I post one article on Buchholz – all I said was “so much for his mechanical difficulties”. It was one comment and I am not worried. If I can’t even post without EVERY SINGLE thing being taken the wrong way, then maybe I shouldn’t post.

  19. cano he didnt April 2nd, 2010 at 6:42 pm

anyone know of the top of their head if the game tomorrow is televised?

  20. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 2nd, 2010 at 6:43 pm

LOL GB – this has been a testing day. I hope Chad really did send me a button because I could use a good laugh or two.

  21. Joe from Long Island April 2nd, 2010 at 6:43 pm

SJ – it’s really speaks volumes about the Os. When you can’t win, I guess you get into the gutter. Not classy, nor professional in my opinion. I thought Trembley was supposed to be baseball lifer, a pro. This stuff doesn’t reflect well on him.

I hope nobody gets hurt because of it.

  22. SJ44 April 2nd, 2010 at 6:43 pm

The Orioles should just shut up and try to win. 75 games this year.

Talking smack to Rivera is the height of stupidity.

    ———————————————————————————————————

That’s what makes playing teams like Baltimore tough to deal with. They have a decent offense and their pitchers have nothing to lose. when their hitters start ducking, they’ll be the ones stopping that crap.

  25. m April 2nd, 2010 at 6:45 pm

These ST incidents with the O’s are good. The Yankees can get complacent at times when playing the weak sisters of the league.

  26. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 2nd, 2010 at 6:47 pm

GB, we really don’t have pitchers that will retaliate that way..

  27. Nick in SF April 2nd, 2010 at 6:47 pm

Since mariano can’t get a pie in the face, he tried to put one in the face of a Pie.

  29. stuckey April 2nd, 2010 at 6:48 pm

Betsy, I genuinely wouldn’t mind giving you some insight into how you’re PERCEIVED (by me and apparently others. I have no insight into how you really think and would presume to try). And I’d offer such insights with genuine good intent.

But not going to foist it on you. Up to you.

  33. SJ44 April 2nd, 2010 at 6:49 pm

    Betsy,

Joba, AJ, and Javy have no problem hitting Fouts. Even CC has a little gangsta in him.

    No Mussina’s on this roster.

Guys will get drilled if they make hitters target practice this year.

  34. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 2nd, 2010 at 6:50 pm

MTU, I can handle jokes about my worrying (I love jokes; a sense of humor is VERY important to me), but when every single post of mine is assumed to come from some depth of despair – well, that makes it very hard on me.

  35. stuckey April 2nd, 2010 at 6:50 pm

“Since mariano can’t get a pie in the face, he tried to put one in the face of a Pie.”

    He really creamed that guy.

He took a bite outta Pie.

    This is fun…

Wow, thanks. I was just saying something factual and now you’re biting *my* head off.

Whatever, not trying to start a fight.

  37. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 2nd, 2010 at 6:51 pm

Javy didn’t retalitate in the ST game, so I have my doubts about him. I know AJ will. Hopefully Phil will have this mentality; he’ll need it as a starter.

  38. SJ44 April 2nd, 2010 at 6:51 pm

Hitting folks. Sorry for the typo.

  39. Giuseppe Franco April 2nd, 2010 at 6:51 pm

Meh, the O’s aren’t exactly a scary team, although they do have several really good hitters in that lineup.

Can’t win if you don’t have any decent pitching.

  40. SJ44 April 2nd, 2010 at 6:52 pm

    Betsy,

you don’t do it in a ST game. You do it in the regular season.

  41. MTU(aka GBURL) April 2nd, 2010 at 6:52 pm

    Betsy-

“MTU, I can handle jokes about my worrying (I love jokes; a sense of humor is VERY important to me), but when every single post of mine is assumed to come from some depth of despair – well, that makes it very hard on me.”

Then I promise to try never to do that again. Sorry.

  42. cano he didnt April 2nd, 2010 at 6:53 pm

AJ doesnt need to purposely retaliate, Im sure he will do it accidentally and then blame it on retaliation lol Unless of course he controls his pitches better this year *fingers crossed*

  43. Jerkface April 2nd, 2010 at 6:53 pm

The O’s are dumb, their pitchers were pitching dangerously high and inside. Rivera missed down and in the dirt and PIE didn’t skip out of the way in time.

Their pitchers need to get a clue.

  44. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 2nd, 2010 at 6:54 pm

I didn’t mention AJ for fear of being accused of being biased….

Stuckey, I’m sure I know how I’m perceived and I’d rather not know the truth, to be honest. I’d rather continue on blissfully ignorant.

That said, you need to tell me what was wrong with my Buchholz post because, IMO, there was nothing wrong with it.

Sorry Becca, but you typed in caps SPRING TRAINING GAME like you were yelling at me……exactly how was I supposed to take that?

  45. stuckey April 2nd, 2010 at 6:54 pm

Isn’t Daniel Cabrera still out there somewhere. Perhaps we can reserve the 25th spot for a pitching goon, ala NHL teams?

    And yes, I’m kidding.

This board is going to be Hell on Earth starting tomorrow, the first time a Yankee Future strikes out a Yankee regular or gets a hit off of vazquez.

Even more sadly will be starting the first game when the Boston trolls as well as Mets trolls and the slugs from the other Yankee boards arrive en masse to trash the board. You already see that with the handful that slithered in during the last couple of months with one purpose….to keep stuff stirred up.

MTU is right – it’s supposed to be fun. After coming home from work (or, sometimes during work), I can use a little fun. Certainly not that other stuff.

I am going to have an after dinner glass of wine, and watch the Encore on YES. After a busy week, right now, that qualifies….

  57. becca April 2nd, 2010 at 7:09 pm

    Betsy -

I really wasn’t trying to insult you; I would have responded like that to anyone who posted that article. Sorry it came off as snippy (which it probably was, but again it wasn’t specifically aimed at you).

  58. stuckey April 2nd, 2010 at 7:09 pm

    Betsy,

“but it seems Buccholz has found something after his struggles.”

This SEEMS to be to be jumping to the conclusion that Buccholz’s results means anything more than just a random 6 innings. I think Becca perceived it that way too. Her point was, it might and probably doesn’t mean something clicked that will carry over long-term. It was just 6 random innings.

“It’s just something to consider with regards to the respective rotations.”

This SEEMS to be suggesting that now we might need to reevaluate the balance of power between the Red Sox and Yankees, because Buccholz threw a few good innings.

The same point stands, 6 ST innings don’t mean much, much less enough to have to reconsider the comparative strengths of the rotation.

As I say, I don’t know if you intend to, but you SEEM to extrapolate a lot into isolated events. A guy gets hit, you worry he’s out for an extended period. Marte and Aceves have minor bugaboos, and suddenly “our pen is suddenly not so fantastic.” which is a declarative statement, not even speculation or a conditional “if”.

It SEEMS like you’re looking for and expecting kinks in the armor, in the very smallest of places. In short, you seem to read very much into what’s often so little.

That said, Betsy, there is an old saying, perception is reality.

People around here of all walks of life – sex, age, temperment have similar reactions. No one is asking or expecting you to post any less than you do. You’re clearly a beloved part of the fabric around here to most.

But you might consider considering no one is out to get you, and perhaps there is actually reason for the unique reaction you seem to soley elicit. Sure, GB7 will tell you otherwise and that’s his right, but *I* for one genuinely hope you can just make the minor adjustment to see things with a little broader perspective. I genuinely think you’d have more fun than it SEEMS you’re having.

    “Starter of specialized role player?”

Hard to tell after 300-something career ABs, which is entirely the point.

Most young players don’t pop out of the minor league womb fully-formed. Most have to grow, learn to eat solid foods, take their first steps. Get potty trained.

Unless you have argument with that concept?

  68. m April 2nd, 2010 at 7:15 pm

    Betsy,

No offense, but since you accused me of overreacting, I’m going to say it anyway.

There’s no need for you to be defensive (I know what you’re going to say. That you’re not. But from the outside, it seems like you are).

You are over-reacting a bit. You’re going off on people because one person got under your skin earlier today.

Not everyone has bad intent when addressing you. Please don’t look for something that’s not there.

  69. 7:15 April 2nd, 2010 at 7:18 pm

Sun Tzu plagiarized Lao Tzu, just like Rebecca plagiarized that article from another blog.

  70. choochoo April 2nd, 2010 at 7:23 pm

Stuckey–it’s just as much the “way” I see Gardner perform as the numbers reflect. His skill level is sub-par for a major leaguer, especially his swing, hip rotation, and utilization of his back side. He is frequently overmatched and rarely “loads up” and drives a pitch with any authority. I’m sure you don’t see that, however. I don’t see Gardner ever getting potty trained. No more than a chimp.

  71. m April 2nd, 2010 at 7:29 pm

    Stuckey,

And I have a bone to pick with you, too. I was a little hurt by your greasy eatery comment earlier.

As long time readers of the blog know, I grew up in Texas. As someone who spent a fair amount of time riding through the countryside, stops at Stuckey’s were heaven!

When I’m over my hurt, I’ll share my ice cream story with you.

  72. Jerkface April 2nd, 2010 at 7:32 pm

how does a japanese person end up in texas

  73. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 2nd, 2010 at 7:35 pm

Becca, no problem – friends again?

Stuckey, I admitted earlier that my comment about the pen not being fantastic was an overreaction. However, I still think I have the right to be concerned about Marte and Aceves without it being implied that I’m overwrought. IMO, those are valid concerns to have.

You could be right about my Buchholz comments, but that wasn’t my intention. I brought him up because we’d been discussing his mechanics recently. When I read the article, I thought that, well, his mechanics apparently were straightened out. CB at the end of that rotation, if he’s good, makes it even more dangerous. That’s a fact – it’s not an overreaction, it’s not a reach.

I am not a paranoid person and I do not think people are out to get me; let’s get that out of the way.

  74. Rose April 2nd, 2010 at 7:36 pm

    Betsy

Just be yourself. If people don’t like it, tough.

    I don’t think Mo would.

  75. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 2nd, 2010 at 7:36 pm

Erin, thanks! I love the whole team; my favorite is actually Mo….but I make no bones about liking Phil and AJ. Again, though – I love everyone; I would’t be a Yankee fan if I didn’t

  76. BBFan April 2nd, 2010 at 7:39 pm

We had enough in the previous threads.
It is time to stop Betsy this, Betsy that from both sides.
Season is starting in a couple of days.
    Let us talk baseball…..

Will Yanks start with better success against Sox unlike last year when they were 0-8 before we knew it? If so why?

  77. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 2nd, 2010 at 7:40 pm

M, actually there was no one person who got under my skin; you can believe it or no, but the person I believe you’re referring to didn’t bother me in the least. This whole thing started because I expressed concern about Marte and Aceves. My comment about the pen not being fantastic was an overreaction, but I do not in any way believe that my comments about Aceves and Marte were an overreaction.

I made a comment about Buchholz (which I now regret) and whoosh – it took off again. I’m finding that people are parsing every single thing I write and taking it to mean I’m freaking out. That’s what it seems to me, at least.

  78. becca April 2nd, 2010 at 7:42 pm

    Betsy – NP. :D

BBFan – If they leave the first series with one win I will be a verrrry happy girl. CC has rough Aprils and Beckett always seems to start off really well, so I’m not expecting to win that game. Then we have to face Boston’s *actual* ace against AJ, where you never know what you’re gonna get. Lackey/Pettitte, meh.

  79. Chuck58 April 2nd, 2010 at 7:42 pm

    Thanks, Trish, my pleasure :-)

Rose, I concur on Mo and retaliation…..
actually, I think he would just go about his business of sawing off bats, letting those actions speak loudest.

    My thoughts exactly :)

  81. m April 2nd, 2010 at 7:45 pm

    Betsy,

I’m trying not to laugh, but you said some not too nice things to that person. I’d hate to see you all hot and bothered! ;)

(and the smiley face is a colon followed by the closed parenthesis)

  82. Chuck58 April 2nd, 2010 at 7:45 pm

BBF, we WILL start out better than 0-8 to Boston this year.
I suppose I could mumble some platitudes about how we are better and they are not as good as the 2009 teams, which may or may not be the case, but let me cut to the chase:
Lightning doesn’t strike twice in the same place. Right?

  83. BBFan April 2nd, 2010 at 7:48 pm

“Lightning doesn’t strike twice in the same place. Right?”

    That’s a good one :)

  84. m April 2nd, 2010 at 7:48 pm

    Jerkface,

Half Japanese. And sometimes a toddler needs to go with the mother. Not always, but most of the time.

So, how many games did we win the division by? Was it 8? If so, that was a 16 game turnaround, right?

  85. Rose April 2nd, 2010 at 7:49 pm

Last year I predicted 20 wins for AJ. My bad.

    ——————————————————————–

This year I’m picking Robertson to be a shut down guy. The kid throws strikes, and has great composure on the mound.

  86. Chuck58 April 2nd, 2010 at 7:49 pm

haha! Thanks. Easier than analysis ;-)

  87. Beanietown April 2nd, 2010 at 7:49 pm

  88. m April 2nd, 2010 at 7:49 pm

Doh, maybe not. What was our biggest deficit to the Sox standings-wise?

  89. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 2nd, 2010 at 7:51 pm

M, I think I remember the comment you’re referring to and I regret it. My point (which I should have made more tactfully) was that I can take some ribbing from the people who I post with here regularly. However, I’ve been insulted numerous times by drive-by trolls and I figured he was one of them. At least the regulars here know me somewhat; what can some guy that never posts know about me? I didn’t want to hear it from him. For that one moment, I guess he did get to me, but overall he wasn’t the problem.

    :)

  90. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 2nd, 2010 at 7:52 pm

    Hey, I did it.:) :) :)

  91. Chuck58 April 2nd, 2010 at 7:52 pm

Biggest deficit? Not sure, Mel, but I would guess 1912, 1913, maybe 1967….

  92. Rick April 2nd, 2010 at 7:52 pm

Just let word filter around the league that Oriole pitchers are purpose pitching and the end result may see players like Adam Jones or Nick Markakis doing some stints on the DL.

  93. MTU(aka GBURL) April 2nd, 2010 at 7:52 pm

A few pre-season predictions (just for fun):

    CC >20 wins
    Yankees over 100 wins
    Grandy >30 homers > .250 vs lefties
    Swisher > .260 BA
    Rays ahead of the Sox
    Beltre disappoints
    Scutaro disappoints
    Papi disappoints
The Yankees will look different after the ASB. (that’s a real safe one)
    Montero tops .320 at AAA
Z-Mac will be the best starter at AAA
    AP will not return

  94. Chuck58 April 2nd, 2010 at 7:52 pm

    Nice emoticons, Betsy :-)

  95. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 2nd, 2010 at 7:53 pm

I think we were down by about 6 games at one point……..but I remember thinking that the Sox had that 12 game winning streak and hadn’t put us out of our misery (which was not so good news for them).

  96. Jerkface April 2nd, 2010 at 7:53 pm

    Biggest lead: 10 games
    Biggest trail: 6.5 Games
Final result: 8 game lead over Boston

  101. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 2nd, 2010 at 7:56 pm

I hit the nail right on the head as far as how many games back we were, lol.

I don’t expect the division to be that easy this year. I really think the Rays are going to be very tough; last year they really were never in it.

  102. m April 2nd, 2010 at 7:57 pm

So a 14.5 game turnaround? Is that possible?

We won 50 games that year. :-(

[The emoticon is just for Betsy ;-) ]

  105. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 2nd, 2010 at 7:58 pm

M, I love it……I wish there was a sidebar where you could just click on different emoticons. I have a stuffed smiley face on my desk at the office; he’s a favorite with the infant set when my coworkers bring their kids by. Unfortunately, one of my co-workers drew evil eyebrows on the smiley so that he looks downright mean; I have a bandaid covering the eyebrows so he’ll always have that happy face look.

  106. Chuck58 April 2nd, 2010 at 7:58 pm

Are you high on Phil Hughes’ chance as a starter? Doesn’t he have to have the change up working to turnover a lineup 2-3 times?

I didn’t see him this spring, so I could easily be out of date on where his changeup is, but what I saw in the past did not look to me like it was going to turn over a good AL East lineup 3x, as you asked.

I seem to recall that the Yanks generally do better than their Pythagenpat indication. Maybe the reason is that because of Mo (and Hughes last year) the Yanks win more than their share of close games. Since Mo is still around and the rest of the bullpen looks promising, I’m guessing that they’ll win well over 100 games again in 2010.

I wasnt sure if we’d get through the chat without at least 1 Phil question. Law has never really liked him, so I almost hesitated reading his answer. Well, he’ll see him at some point I suppose. The questioner interestingly asked about the change, so I guess the change is looked at as a very important pitch for Phil (as opposed to the cutter).

I’m watching the replay here. Saw Mariano hit Pie. Obviously not intentional. What the hell did the Birds say?

  193. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 2nd, 2010 at 8:53 pm

I thought that was Big Brother, lol.

Bodh, I believe the gist of it is that Pie started yapping because he thought Mo was retaliating from the last time the two teams played. The O’s are annoying as heck..

  194. blake April 2nd, 2010 at 8:55 pm

I’m sure they just said something because Girardi did the other day when Guthrie couldn’t hit the side of a barn.

Mariano will forgive them :D .

Seriously – they thought that was payback? Not where he’d put it, were that the case.

Here’s another one of my favorites.

Don’t draft small bodied pitchers they’ll never be successful at the ML level. Always go for the big-bodied guys. ;)

  204. Go Yanks April 2nd, 2010 at 9:17 pm

    Betsy,

    Throw was not perfect . . .

it was 1/2 inch too high and 1/4 inch to the left /s

    That’s another.

Here’s another: little ball beats big ball.

  206. stuckey April 2nd, 2010 at 9:20 pm

“Stuckey–it’s just as much the “way” I see Gardner perform as the numbers reflect. His skill level is sub-par for a major leaguer, especially his swing, hip rotation, and utilization of his back side. He is frequently overmatched and rarely “loads up” and drives a pitch with any authority. I’m sure you don’t see that, however. ”

Thoughtful response choo-choo. And I don’t agree with all of it, but I can respect the opinion. Much better than drive by swipes at him.

“I don’t see Gardner ever getting potty trained. No more than a chimp.”

Ah, so close yet so far.. lol

  207. stuckey April 2nd, 2010 at 9:22 pm

“As long time readers of the blog know, I grew up in Texas. As someone who spent a fair amount of time riding through the countryside, stops at Stuckey’s were heaven!”

:-) I honestly can’t say I’m all too familiar with them, other than a bad childhood experience and the reputation in these parts as what would happen if you put a Denny’s in a gas station bathroom.

  208. Benny Blanco April 2nd, 2010 at 9:28 pm

And another : For a starter to be successful they must not be emotional, or show a lot of emotion while on the mound. Stoicism is required.

  210. stuckey April 2nd, 2010 at 9:36 pm

    Betsy, it’s all good.

I know some advocate everyone should just doing exactly what they’ve been doing, but it seems like this dynamic has existed for a long time, long before I ever showed up.

I’m simply trying to understand where you’re coming from and perhaps help you understand where some of us come from sometimes, perhaps contribute a small part to getting past this.

There is a ritual in high school basketball. Whenever the fans of the losing team cheer for saying one of their players drawing a foul or a turnover from the team that’s ahead, the fans of the team ahead simply point to the scoreboard.

In a way, when I see people (NOT just you) express concerns about minor injuries or a bad pitching performance in spring training, I sort of want to point to last year’s standings and the results of the last 16 years. And say, “what are you talking nonsense about”. :-)

Yeah, they aren’t infallible, and other are other good teams and only two can from from their division, but they’re a REAL talented team. It would take a series of really bad things to happen for them to miss the post-season, not a standard amount of small ones.

Perhaps what I see in game threads I unfairly project onto you, but it seems like a whole contingent worried hourly until the Yanks mathematically clinched home field throughout. It was my first regular season experience here and I found it quite bizarre and a quite a bit fascinating. I’m still playing catch-up to a degree.

  211. GreenBeret7 April 2nd, 2010 at 9:38 pm

Rest In Peace, Miguel Cuellar. You were a Hell of a fine pitcher. 72 is still too young.

  212. pistol pete April 2nd, 2010 at 9:42 pm

Left field is an embarassment for a team like the Yankees especially since Granderson and Swisher are hardly Bernie and O’Neil. Among Hoffman, Golson, Thames, Winn, and Gardner it’s a sad bunch. Imagine Gardner won the job with a 200 spring and no power, what a joke. Damon was cheap enough, proven, a better 2 hole hitter than Johnson, hits leftys, has power, fits Yankee Stadium perfectly, and is playoff proven. This group Cashman has assembled stink, really stink, what an embarassment to have a corner outfielder with no pop. Remember how enamered the Yanks were with Dave Collins years ago, that lasted less than a year and so will Gardner. The more part timers play the worse they get. What the hell was he thinking, we’re the Yankees not the Royals, we don’t shop for corner outfielders at K Mart, we go to Brooks Brothers.

  213. Joe from Long Island April 2nd, 2010 at 9:43 pm

GB – You mean Mike Cuellar? The guy who pitched for Baltimore back in the day?

GB – You mean Mike Cuellar? The guy who pitched for Baltimore back in the day?

    ———————————————————————————————————————-

Yeah, Joe. Cuban born lefty. Outstanding screwball, curve and solid fastball with control on everything. Hard to believe that he was Baltimore’s first Cy Young winner in ’69, and not Palmer, Bunker or McNally. I believe that Randy knew him from his ST and bullpen days. Regardless of the era that he played in, 185 wins, ERA of 3.14 and 1600 strikeouts in 13 years is impressive.

  218. Jenny April 2nd, 2010 at 9:58 pm

So has the opening day roster been finalized?

    ———————————————————————————————————————-

The great players are leaving guys like us way too soon, Joe. Cuellar, Willie Davis just recently. Hard to believe that all that’s left from that great ’72-73 Baltimore pitching staff is Jim Palmer.

  222. GreenBeret7 April 2nd, 2010 at 10:16 pm

MTU, none that throw it a lot, though, a few might throw it once in a while. I think that Pedro Martinez plays with one and Jamie Moyer does on occassion. Jim Mecir, Tug McGraw, Fernando Valenzuela and John Franco were among the last of them.

  223. Joe from Long Island April 2nd, 2010 at 10:34 pm

Palmer’s the only one left? My gosh, I still think of him as a relative youngster. Time is relentless. But, they really had a great pitching staff, especially starting rotation. And that was back when starters were expected to finish, and to go on 3 days rest. The good old days…. :)

Well, the wife just pulled in from her business trip. So, I’ll bid everyone a good night. I’ll check back in tomorrow.

How ironic, Opening Day falls on Easter. Both days signify a renewal.

    Good night.

  224. Pat M. April 2nd, 2010 at 11:26 pm

GB, I just heard about the passing of Mike Cuellar……I managed to line white a double against him in 73, as he hung a screwball over the plate for me……Have to say though Iron Mike Marshall threw an impossible to hit Scrooge,as he threw harder and it had a late tight break…..Almost like a reversed slider……What did he die from ????
