Love that pic of best buds Jeter and Alex.

This is an awfully good team, but then this is an awfully good division; the Yankees could miss the playoffs and it wouldn’t be a shock. That’s how good the 3 teams are. I think a big key will be how they play against the Jays and O’s ,both of whom will be pains in the keyster.

Doeen, I would also be happy to help you with GTLU — not in running it, but in providing unbiased and honest advice (as a non-participant) when controversies arise and choices must be made. I did that several times for Erica last season, though she would never admit it due to ego and general Fascist tendencies. But I digress. I will be here for you!

Oh boy, looks like Jeter is hurt in that picture.

I hope he still will be able to catch up to that Beckett faaaaassssst ball tomorrow.

12 of the 25 players on the yankees opening day roster are home grown. If you want to count Nick Johnson it would be 13 of the 25.

From what I can gather regarding final rosters, 8 of the 25 players on the Sox opening day roster are home grown and 9 of the 25 players on the Rays opening day roster.

12 home grown players is one of the highest in baseball.

    http://www.newsday.com/sports/.....-1.1845123

Opening Day is such a cherished commodity that Major League Baseball has packaged it, franchised it, sold it and exported it.

Consider the beleaguered Montreal Expos, who went out of business because they couldn’t draw.

On Opening Day, April 3, 2000, they attracted 51,249. The next night, they were down to 12,143, and the night after that, they were back to a typical 8,867.

No, it wasn’t the downtrodden Expos the Canadian fans had come to see that first night. It was an occasion so special that it gets people to do what they don’t ordinarily do.

Even Joe DiMaggio, never one to share his reflections, once was moved to say: “You always get a special kick on Opening Day no matter how many you go through. You look forward to it like a birthday party when you’re a kid. You think something wonderful is going to happen.”

Opening Day is such a cherished commodity that Major League Baseball has packaged it, franchised it, sold it and exported it to Japan, Mexico, Puerto Rico and, now annually, Sunday night. The Yankees-Red Sox game Sunday night is part of the new tradition, an opener before the openers that began with baseball’s contract with ESPN in 1994. It has stolen some thunder from the folksy Opening Day parade in Cincinnati and the presidential first pitch in Washington. (President Obama will mark the 100th anniversary of that tradition Monday.)

Still, judging from the full houses, decorative bunting and excitement, Opening Day still is something of a civic holiday. And it is that way mostly because it always was. Baseball’s soul always has seemed to yearn for it. The notation “Commencement of the Season” was on the official scoresheet of a game April 10, 1846, a game umpired by Alexander Cartwright, the man credited with having invented baseball.

Credit the Cincinnati Reds, the de facto godfathers of Opening Day. Baseball people assume that the Reds were given the honor of hosting the first game (before the ESPN Sunday night era) because they were the first professional team in 1869. Team historian Greg Rhodes wrote that there is no evidence for that. He suggested the reasoning was that Cincinnati was the southernmost city and its field usually was in the best shape (notwithstanding 1877, when the rain was so bad that players had to take a barge to Louisville for the opener).

The Reds were the most successful in promoting Opening Day during the National League-American Association battles of the 1880s. A grassroots parade sprung up. It was adopted by shopkeepers at Findlay Market in 1920 and continues to this day.

The parade boomed when it was rerouted through the heart of town in 1970. When Marge Schott bought the team in 1984, she used influence at the Cincinnati Zoo to have animals included. As former Reds player Lenny Harris once said, “There are a lot of good Opening Days, but it’s tough to top those elephants in Cincinnati.”

Washington always could hold its own, what with the president making the ceremonial first pitch. Baseball enthusiast William Howard Taft (unlike predecessor Teddy Roosevelt, who didn’t consider the sport manly enough) began the tradition, tossing to Senators pitcher Walter Johnson in 1910 (Johnson followed with a shutout of the Athletics).

Harry Truman was the most bipartisan, throwing one pitch lefty and another righty in 1950. Vice President Hubert Humphrey’s pitch was delayed in 1968 because the opener was postponed twice by rioting after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.

Opening Day has broadened America’s horizons: Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947 and Frank Robinson became the first African-American manager in 1975 (and hit his record eighth Opening Day homer).

Opening Day has broadened baseball’s horizons: The Yankees introduced uniform numbers (1929), San Francisco’s Seals Stadium hosted the first West Coast game (1958), Ron Blomberg became the first designated hitter (1973) and Hank Aaron tied Babe Ruth (1974).

Opening Day is quirky and personal and poignant: One-armed outfielder Pete Gray debuted (1945); former catcher Charlie Bennett, whose legs were amputated in an 1894 train accident, threw the first pitch at every Detroit opener from 1896 to 1927; Fenway Park’s Green Monster was introduced (1934, three months after the original fence burned down).

For one day every year, every player feels like a kid. That includes a Yankees veteran who was known as “Old Reliable.” Tommy Henrich once said: “Believe you me, it takes a young player a long, long time to get over those Opening Day butterflies.”

And every Opening Day is when teams get to prove what they had said – “We’ll be ready when the bell rings.” Stan Isaacs, the former Newsday columnist, used to bring a cowbell and let it peal on the first pitch.

    Doreen,

The wild green onions were harvested from my back yard which is a veritable jungle of weeds. They thrive on my property because I’m green and don’t use any chemicals to fertilize. In the front yard, I pick weeds by the crate full every year this time of season. My dog is fenced in the back too, so I don’t want to poison him. Today, I actually mowed my front weeds, I mean my front lawn.

In 2011, NYY could add 3 more hime growns to the opening day roster in Melancon, Mcallister and Montero, with Curtis or Russo replacing Gardner. One of Curtis, Gardner or Russo will be gone in a mid-to- late season trade.

  59. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 3rd, 2010 at 8:01 pm

Fran, I don’t think it’s the same, though. Baseball is all tradition and Americana; the NFL is nowhere near as old and doesn’t have the same place in peoples’ hearts as baseball.

ok. I’ll admit it, for the first time i’m offiically a little concerened about losing Austin Jackson.

this has nothing to do with Curtis Granderson. And him either being or not being on this team.

it has to do with Timmy Kirk, and about 10 people affiliated with ESPN, who are picking him for AL Rookie of the Year.

no matter what happens, tho. Cashman will never take any heat from me for the trade. He did want i wanted him to do. And if were GM, i would have made the same trade

    Doreen,

Lawn maintenance certainly presents a conundrum of sorts, doesn’t it. I am very green though, so green that I don’t use a gas powered lawn mower. I use a manual old-fashioned human powered push mower with a rotating blade. I also compost all my leaves, grass clippings, weeds and fruit/vegetable scraps. One day I’ll start a garden. I really want to plant hearty stuff like sweet potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, green peppers, red peppers, tomatoes, melons, cabbage. I eat a ton of fruits and veggies. My grocery bill is way too high right now. It’s not sustainable. I’d also love to learn to hunt deer. I absolutely love the taste of venison, marinated in red wine vinegar and fresh herbs and spices. The problem is, hunting gear and everything costs so much money it’s almost not worth it unless you really know what you’re doing. My dad hunts deer with bow and arrow. I’d love to use a crossbow but you have to have some kind of handicap to qualify for one I think.

I know it’s a lot of work – cooking for/in an Italian family for the holidays. i usually host all the holidays at my house and I love the cooking – the planning, the prep, everything (except the clean-up, of course). But over the years, most of my family has moved far enough away that we don’t enjoy most holidays together anymore. We went from a houseful (23 people ) to sometimes 5 or 6. I hate it.

I’ll never forget the first Thanksgiving I cooked as a married person in my first home. We always had to have pasta, so i made stuffed shells as an appetizer, and everything from soup to nuts. I miss those days so much.

This year, it’s just myself, my husband and two daughters and we’re going to Bayonne to see my mother-in-law. And I cooked, but it had to be make ahead-able and easily transportable. I can’t indulge all my creativity with appetizers and desserts and multiple veggies. It’s boring. And it makes me very sad.

These days, Christmas is the only time most of us can be together, but we’re never all together anymore.

    Doreen

    Similiar here.

I do most of the holidays now and invite everyone because it avoids the your family/ my family debate and our kids whine less when they get to stay on familiar soil.

The group used to be 20+ and now fluctuates from 6-20+ depending on the holiday. I like the more the merrier for holidays approach because it’s what I was used to growing up. It doesn’t feel as holiday-ish when it’s just the 6 of us.

Combining customs and dietary needs of some family members makes it somewhat of a challenge but it’s only a few times a year and I think it’s important for the kids to have the tradition of it.

  141. Joe from Long Island April 3rd, 2010 at 8:39 pm

GLove, that really was a big change there, with Boston going away from the supremacy of OBP in signing FAs Beltre and Cameron. Jerkface, I’d hate to think AJ can only pitch there now because the lineup is weaker. Something happened there – I don’t know. Then again, I never thought AJ was close to being dominant last year, even during that stretch in June or July. I mean, he was very good, but not like I thought he would be. I don’t know if his FB was down or what, but he didn’t have many of those 2 or 3 hit, 10 K games people associate with him. I think he had a good year, unlike most, but he did it differently than I expected. If he’s better this year, maybe he’ll be better in Fenway as well.

I called my older brother who has a greenhouse on his property and a very successful small garden that feeds him well. there are no black holes in the rays and red sox lineups like the yankees have with gardner and a potential one once nick johnson hits the DL again.

after being traded to florida last year, NJ played in only 22 of 53 games..
this is what he does folks..

you know what Damon would have done if he got hit in the knee area like NJ did yesterday? he would have gotten up like a man, prolly would have missed 1 day.. but then he would played through it…and made it work.

NJ will probably miss a week or let it affect him if he does play, watch..

  185. Bret the Hitman April 3rd, 2010 at 9:03 pm

    Doreen,

It’s not difficult to start a compost pile. I didn’t read any books or anything. Basically just remember to put in more green stuff than brown stuff at roughly a 2/1 ratio. My problem in the beginning was too much brown stuff and not enough green. Finally, after many months of adding nothing but kitchen scraps, I reached the tipping point and everything is now turning into soil and smelling more like dirt. On the flip side, too many kitchen scraps without any old dead leaves will cause your scraps to rot and mold. Grass clippings are the best fuel for your compost pile because of their high nitrogen content. If you take good care of your lawn then you probably have a large amount of grass waste to put in a compost pile. You wouldn’t have to depend on kitchen scraps so much like I do. Another thing, no meats in the compost. They spoil it. Only fruits and veggie scraps.

    Doreen,

Yes, I do have a special compost bin that I bought from my county. Many counties sell bins at discount prices because they want to reduce the strain on landfills. Check with your county. Mine is an $100 bin but I got it for $40. Once I start a garden I’ll buy one of those rain barrels that attach to gutters and capture like 100 gallons of water. Rain water is much better to use to water gardens because it contains more minerals than tap water. Garden plants thrive on the nutrients found in rainwater because it strengthens their immune systems and makes them more resistant to pests.

  220. Joe from Long Island April 3rd, 2010 at 9:43 pm

Benny, really, he’s back on the DL? Boy, he’s had more than his share of arm problems.

I think Anaheim is going to be wanting for pitching this year. Even though I think they were appropriatley wary of Lackey’s shoulder, they didn’t really replace his ability and innings in the rotation. Replacing Lackey with Kazmir? I don’t know, and this DL business points it out. I think Seattle and Texas are going to give them a lot of problems this year, I think they’re relying on aging players (Abreu and Matsui) to much (how ironic, after seeing Vlad age before their eyes), and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Seattle or Texas take the division.

  221. Bo knows April 3rd, 2010 at 9:44 pm

Garden, eh? One package lettuce seed. One six pack tomatoes. Cost, under 5 dollars. Dig in compost into dirt. Half a bucket of water per tomato plant twice a week. Salad in six weeks. Tomatoes two weeks later. Instant garden. Each journey begans with the first step. Next year, expand. Nothing tastes like going into your garden and plucking a red tomato off the vine.

I honestly have no idea what is the stupidest part of this post.

Jon Lester is a helluva pitcher and he’s OBVIOUSLY at a different point in his career than Phil Hughes. Match him against Javy or AJ, not against Phil – it’s completely unfair.

I’m not the biggest fan of that NL GM, but Marchand thinks the Sox have greater depth with Dice K and Wakefield? So, they are not aging and/or injured, but Andy is? I see that Phil is unproven, but he’s the #5. Buchholz is NOT proven either, but he’s the #4. What am I missing here?

    This takes the cake:

The Winner: Red Sox The reason we give them the slight edge is that they don’t have the possible hangover effect from last year’s postseason. All pitchers are injury concerns, but Burnett and Pettitte could be impacted by their 220-plus innings last year. Burnett has never thrown 200 innings in back-to-back seasons.

    ****

Can ESPN NY get any worse? I can no longer take this dope seriously.

“ok. I’ll admit it, for the first time i’m offiically a little concerened about losing Austin Jackson.

this has nothing to do with Curtis Granderson. And him either being or not being on this team.

it has to do with Timmy Kirk, and about 10 people affiliated with ESPN, who are picking him for AL Rookie of the Year.”

An extremely athletic, talented center field prospect with a history of having trouble making contact tears it up in spring training and puts up the following numbers:

    .315 .378 .425 .803

9 ESPN analysts predict he’ll win rookie of the year.

    Austin Jackson in 2010, right?

    Not quite.

    Cameron Maybin spring training 2009.

So how did Maybin do in 2009 the year he was destined to win ROY? He played 54 games in the bigs in 2009, had 199 plate appearances and put up the following line:

    .250 .318 .409

He had around 175 at bats in 2009 and struck out 51 times. Not quite what he did in spring training.

An extremely athletic centerfield prospect with a history of having trouble making consistent contact puts up the following line in spring training:

    .324 .378 .471 .849

Multiple ESPN experts pick him to win ROY?

    Austin Jackson 2010?

No. Jordan Schafer of the braves spring training 2009.

How did Schafer do in 2009 in the major leagues:

    .204 .313 .287 .600

Schafer had around 170 plate appearances in the bigs and struck out 67 times – that’s 38% of his at bats.

Austin Jackson may go on to have a fantastic career but fans and the media are putting way too much attention to his performance in spring training. You can’t infer very much from it.

    Hi everyone,

Went to the game today. My Dad and I both got the replica championship rings they were giving away. I expected them to be cheap plastic but they are actually real metal and are pretty cool looking.
I got to say hi and wish good luck to Jesus Montero. He is a big kid and if he was not in shape when he reported he doesn’t look that way now.
I was sitting right next to the future stars bullpen and got to watch Ivan Nova warm up. I thought his fastball was pretty good but he looked like he had trouble controlling his slider.
Slade Heathcott is very fast. He beat out a routine grounder that A-Rod may have not played with a great deal of urgency.

The thing that impressed me the most today was afer they left the game, the entire starting infield went to one of the practice field and worked on turning double plays.

That folks is the stuff that makes champions.

“Wasn’t Maybin a much higher rated prospect than AJax as well?

I thought Maybin was almost a cant-miss kind of guy ”

    BD,

Maybin was and is a much better prospect than Jackson is. There’s no comparison.

Many people feel that this is going to be Maybin’s year. And he’s so talented it very well might be.

But here’s the thing – people talk about “5 tool players” all the time. And Maybin in many ways is a legitimate “5 tool” guy.

But not all tools are created equal.

Maybin has a long swing that has holes in it. He’s had trouble making contact in the minor leagues.

And that is often a kiss of death for a player because if there is a clear hole/holes in a swing major league pitcher will attack it relentlessly. Which is what happened last year to both Maybin and Schafer.

And Schafer too was a better prospect than Jackson is.

Jackson’s problem in the minors are similar to those Maybin was dealing with and he’s not nearly as talented. Jackson has been extremely streaky in the minors and that very well might have been what happened this spring. He is very talented.

He could win rookie of the year this year. I wouldn’t be shocked. But if he hit .150 I wouldn’t be surprised at all.

I personally don’t think he’s ready for the bigs.

Part of why Maybin struggled so much last year because he was rushed to the majors.

Which team rushed Maybin to the majors?

    The Tigers.

  320. Boston Dave XXVII April 4th, 2010 at 12:12 am

good points – and I do remember when the Tigers called up Maybin. very interesting indeed.

It wasn’t that long ago that some in the media were downplaying AJax as a prospect because he was an athlete and not a baseball player. Many kept him out of the top 75 prospects in baseball. Now he’s a ROY favorite. I guess we’ll see.

yeah Tampa gets picked on too much about the attendance issue by the national media that really don’t know the situation….the location of the ballpark is terrible for a metro area w/ zero public transportation . The demographics in that immediate area of Downtown St. Pete is all snowbirds who go back up North most of the summer. The younger demographic is across the bridge in Tampa. Lots of Young families, more corporate money, etc. If a new ballpark was built by the Hockey Arena near downtown Tampa, near George Steinbrenner Field, or at the Florida State Fairgrounds near the Hard Rock Casino they wouldn’t have an issue getting 25K average on weeknights if they are competitive. Tampa Bay definitely is a better sports market than Miami, a new ballpark won’t fix the Marlin’s problems, they are just bad fans in every sport.

  322. becca April 4th, 2010 at 12:17 am

Pedroia is really good, I gotta say. Right now I take him ahead of Cano (and if Zobrist can repeat what he did last year, I take him ahead of both of them). In a year or two, though, who knows.

  323. CB April 4th, 2010 at 12:21 am

    BD,

On that note another fascinating guy in the minors also plays for the Marlins – Mike Stanton.

Stanton is the most talented position player prospect in all of baseball. More talented than Heyward or Montero.

Stanton, Heyward and Montero are all basically the same age.

Stanton’s got 80 power and can play centerfield. He’s the kind of guy who could hit 50 home runs in the bigs in a year and it wouldn’t be surprising. He’s got more home run power than Montero.

Last year Heyward, Montero and Stanton all started the year in high A and then were promoted to AA. How they did was very interesting to watch.

Heyward and Montero thrived and even dominated AA.

Stanton – the most talented of all of three – really struggled at AA because, like Maybin, the part of his game that’s most underdeveloped is contact and strike zone command.

But in the end those are the two most important tools.

It’ll be very interesting to see how he does this year. He is immensely talented but has a very concerning potential achilles heal, an achilles heal that is often impossible to fix.

  324. Joe April 4th, 2010 at 12:21 am

Dice-K is the perfect example of what CR9 talks about with the Sox-agenda machine.

What has this guy ever done in his career aside from a fluke 2008 season where he happened to walk almost 100 guys?

Was it his 4.40 ERA in 2007? His 5.76 ERA last year?

Why is this guy portrayed as some good pitcher who is a sure thing?

  325. Boston Dave XXVII April 4th, 2010 at 12:24 am

    becca,

Pedroia is definitely good, but I also think he’s a little overrated. Pedroia has a .756 OPS away from Fenway (.896 at Fenway). It’s tough to argue with that.

I’d be shocked if Cano didn’t have a better year than him both at the plate and in the field.

If Zobrist repeats his 2009, he’s not only the best 2nd baseman, he’s an MVP candidate. Don’t forget Aaron Hill either – he was among the best as well.

  326. Boston Dave XXVII April 4th, 2010 at 12:26 am

    CB,

Oh I know about Stanton :)

He’s going to be one heck of a power hitter.

Do you really think he’ll be a more complete player than Heyward though? Or what do you mean by “most talented” ?

  327. CB April 4th, 2010 at 12:27 am

The Yankees won their 27th world championship and are days away from getting their rings.

They have the most talented team in the game and the best organization in baseball.

And yankee fans on this board are still obsessing about the Red Sox.

It’s just so strange to see. Even after winning the obsession with the Sox won’t die.

Too many yankee fans have become what a number of Red Sox fans used to be. And for years yankee fans laughed at the Sox fans for those insecurities and obsessions.

  328. Boston Dave XXVII April 4th, 2010 at 12:28 am

    Joe,

I’ve watched enough Daisuke starts – the guy seems like an enigma to me.

He can have an at bat where he makes some of the best hitters look silly and then the next inning he can’t find the plate and looks like he has no idea what he’s doing out there.

I feel like Daisuke has the stuff and repertoire to be a very good pitcher but he’s never been consistent enough to get the job done.

Considering he’s no rookie, the odds are against him ever finding that consistency. But if he did, he might actually live up to half of the hype he got when the Sox first landed him.

  329. becca April 4th, 2010 at 12:31 am

    Boston Dave –

I agree Pedroia is a product of Fenway and away from the Sox I don’t know if he’d be as good, but he has very good on-base skills and he’s a great defender. It would not surprise me if Cano had a much better year than him, however.

  330. CB April 4th, 2010 at 12:32 am

    BD,

Stanton has more physical talent and better tools than Heyward. For example, Stanton could legitimately play center field right now (perhaps not when he’s 30). He’s got better defensive tools. Stanton has much more power than Heyward.

But he’s the less “complete” player because he has trouble making contact.

Stanton could outgrow those difficulties but he really struggled in AA.

He’s an even more extreme case than Maybin. What he Stanton did in low A and High A is just jaw dropping. It’s hard to believe an 18-19 year old could hit for that much power in in the Florida State league – a place where the ball just doesn’t carry at all – is just amazing.

Nice comparisons CB. The day the Tigers announced that Jackson was going to be their starting CF this year I immediately thought of Maybin. I think the Tigers are putting way too much pressure of Jackson especially since he is going to be hitting leadoff.

  332. tampayank April 4th, 2010 at 12:34 am

    I wish AJax well

  333. Dale April 4th, 2010 at 12:36 am

    CB,

It stems from the fact that very few people here can take criticism of the Yankees or praise for the Sox. It is always some conspiracy or anti-yankee agenda. As if saying the Sox have a better rotation or something is outrageous. Both these teams are very good and either can win the division.

  334. stuckey April 4th, 2010 at 12:37 am

“And yankee fans on this board are still obsessing about the Red Sox.”

I find there is less obsessing about the Red Sox, and much more obsessing about how they perceive how the media perceives the Red Sox, which makes it exponentially stranger.

  335. stuckey April 4th, 2010 at 12:39 am

Bear in mind the AJax thing is partially because he’s one of the few true rookies handed a starting role out of the gate. Part of being RoY is getting the time to compile stats. IF he sticks and id he’s batting lead-off, he’s simply going to get a LOT of ABs.

  336. Rainbow April 4th, 2010 at 12:40 am

Nevermind that 21 of 35 ESPN analysts picked the Yankees to make it to the WS, with about 32 of them picking us to win the division.

On the heels of 9 of 13 SI experts picking us to win the WS.

…but someone writers an article about how the Sox rotation is ‘slightly’ better and the “NESPN!” crowd comes out of the woodwork.

    Strange.

  337. stuckey April 4th, 2010 at 12:41 am

    Centerstage: Bill O’Reilly?

    Really?

Well, I guess Fox’s ad dollars got them a little bonus.

  338. CB April 4th, 2010 at 12:43 am

“Nevermind that 21 of 35 ESPN analysts picked the Yankees to make it to the WS, with about 32 of them picking us to win the division.

On the heels of 9 of 13 SI experts picking us to win the WS.”

It is very strange. The yankees have been overwhelmingly chosen by the national press as the team to beat.

But that’s not enough, I guess.

  339. Boston Dave XXVII April 4th, 2010 at 12:44 am

    good point Rainbow :)

I think you settled that one.

  340. Jerkface April 4th, 2010 at 12:56 am

Its 1 thing to pick the team in a 30 person pick table (many picks made by people who do not contribute articles), its another to write article after article bashing the team.

  341. stuckey April 4th, 2010 at 1:02 am

“its another to write article after article bashing the team.”

“Bashing” as in harshly criticizing how they go about their business, suggesting the team is not talented, isn’t play-off worthy? Are articles like that being published?

Or do you mean “bashing” in another way?

  342. pistol pete April 4th, 2010 at 1:08 am

What a great bench Cashman has assembled. Winn, Thames, Cervelli, and Pena. Plus, I couldn’t take my eyes off that left field battle between Hoffman, Golson, Thames, Winn, and Gardner who won it with a stellar .200 batting avg with absolutely no power, what a joke. The Yanks will miss Matsui and especially Damon. I do like the Vazquez trade and Granderson is an upgrade over Melky but Johnson will have a tough time matching Matsui’s numbers and the Gardner/Damon comparison is a joke. Gardner is a part time player and his weaknesses will show up the more he plays, not to worry we have killers Winn and Thames to step in if he fails. Should have swallowed their pride and just signed Damon., Left field is a joke.

  343. Boston Dave XXVII April 4th, 2010 at 1:10 am

    pistol pete,

gardner is certainly a downgrade from damon.

but how much of an upgrade is he defensively – from a WAR perspective or whatever you choose, what is the effect of having gardner in LF vs damon?

just curious how bad it really is.

i mean, the Sox replaced Jason Bay with Cameron. There must be some value in defense, no?

  344. pistol pete April 4th, 2010 at 1:19 am

No matter how good his defense is if gardner doesn’t hit he’ll be replaced in left field, you can count on it. You can’t have a corner outfielder on the Yankees with as little pop as Gardner, plus, it’s not like he looks over and sees Bernie and O’neill. Our outfield is weak, plain and simple, and our bench stinks. There will be changes in mid season as there always is.

  345. stuckey April 4th, 2010 at 1:21 am

“No matter how good his defense is if gardner doesn’t hit he’ll be replaced in left field, you can count on it.”

    Okay.

“and our bench stinks. There will be changes in mid season as there always is.”

    Okay.

So IF Gardner doesn’t hit he’ll be replaced and the bench will be fortified mid-season.

Sounds to me like you’re saying there is nothing to worry about, or do I misunderstand?

  346. Jacob Ruppert April 4th, 2010 at 1:26 am

What happened to Hoffman? I must have missed hearing about it.

  347. Rich in NJ April 4th, 2010 at 1:37 am

Gardner to be replaced by a bench player to be named later?

  348. Jerkface April 4th, 2010 at 1:50 am

“Bashing” as in harshly criticizing how they go about their business, suggesting the team is not talented, isn’t play-off worthy? Are articles like that being published?

Bashing: the payroll, age of the team (despite it getting younger), the opening article which featured many errors and suggested the Yankees escaped injury but for A-rod (ignoring wang, nady, posada) etc

Backhanded statements in regards to the payroll and other things.

Any BBTN episode which talks at all about the yankees is going to involve some kind of backhanded comment.

    Obnoxious.

  349. Pat M. April 4th, 2010 at 2:02 am

When you are The NY Yankees & The defending World Series Champions, shots are to be expected…..It comes with the territory….When the cheap shots discontinue, then there’s something to be concerned with…….Until then, enjoy life on top of the heap !!!!! Little Town blues

  350. stuckey April 4th, 2010 at 2:14 am

I haven’t read or read reference to any story about the current Yankees that doesn’t recognize them as arguably the most talented team in the league on paper, a certain contender and no less than one of the favorites to win the World Series.

I think our definition of “bash” is a little skewed when when we’re defining it as recognizing the Yanks as prohibitive favorites but highlighting potential pitfalls.

  351. Patrick April 4th, 2010 at 2:17 am

Hmm I’d take Jackson over Schafer and Heyward over Stanton. Gotta disagree with you on this one CB.

Both Heyward and Stanton grade out with 80 power, not sure where the “stanton has more power” argument comes from

  352. Jerkface April 4th, 2010 at 2:27 am

Could be Stantons 39 HRs in the minors at age 18. Or His 28 the next year. Heyward had 11… then 17?

  353. Patrick April 4th, 2010 at 2:39 am

Oops I misread the scouting report… tequila owns me. Heyward is 80 for hitting, Stanton is 80 for power.

I still take Heyward over Stanton but that’s just my opinion.

    Happy Easter!

    Happy Opening Day!!!

NYY626 – Very inconsiderate, don’t you think???

    —–

I just wanted to comment on the “age” criticism that haunts the Yankees. I think it is because it is the Core 4 who are “up there.” Though each of the 4 has really showed no signs of being affected by their “advanced” age, it is a fair concern. It’s unchartered territory in a way. Shortstop, catcher and closer are key positions on a baseball team, so it is fair to wonder, I think.

But we’ve seen how Jeter and Posada had stayed in shape; how they’ve made adjustments to their off-season workouts. Mariano is Mariano.

So, think the reality of those three and who they are and what they do negates somewhat any worrying due to their age.

  367. Hiero April 4th, 2010 at 8:40 am

Hate to start the criticisms before the game is played, but it’s not entirely comforting to know our only bench players are Pena, Thames and Winn. Pena has proven himself, but Thames is only good against lefties and Winn is a 35 year old backup. I would rather see guys like Winfree, Gorecki, Golson and Weber given the opportunities to come off the bench, but I suppose it’s more sensible to have veterans who know what’s expected and can step up.

    C. Dustin Pedroia

    A. Robinson Cano

    B. Aaron Hill

    E. Ben Zobrist

Am I the only one who constantly wonders why Pedroria is so overhyped and Cano is so underrated? Talent wise, Cano is definately the better second baseman.. and over the past few years Pedroria has not lived up to his MVP season… while Cano just seems to be getting better. I voted for Cano.

Cano always seems to choke when it matters.

Cano is nothing until he hits with RISP.

  374. Comet April 4th, 2010 at 9:31 am

Fortunately the Yankees get the worst of venues out of the way for awhile being at the Green Sardine Can in front of silly, jealous Bahhstin fans.
Next stop, Tropicana Field. The Rays open up against the Orioles and among the giveaways will be 10,000 new “super” cowbells …… just in time for the Yankee series on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

  377. MTU (aka GBURL) April 4th, 2010 at 9:39 am

As the Romans used to say “Let the Games begin”.

    A few pre-season predictions:

    Montero > .320 at AAA

Beltre, Papi, Cameron, and Drew all underperform.

    Yankees> 100 wins

    Rays > Sox

    CC > 20 wins

Z-Mac = our best AAA pitcher

    Cano > 100 RBI’s

    A-Rod > 40 hrs

    Thats enough for now.

No reason to be anything but optimistic for a repeat as long as the key players stay healthy. :)

  378. Dan April 4th, 2010 at 9:42 am

“Dan as GB has pointed out many times 2009 was an aberration for Cano with RISP. He will hit with RISP.”

    It was no aberration.

I watched nearly every single game and Cano was brutal. There was no “bad luck” as Girardi claims. Cano swung at pitches he normally lays off when nobody is on base, and seemed to change his total approach at the plate. He flat out stunk.

  379. SJ44 April 4th, 2010 at 9:47 am

    Dan,

Relax. It’s not a newsflash he had a bad year with RISP last year. Every other facet of his game has was outstanding.

    He’s had a great Spring. It’s a new year.

If you are going to be miserable wait until the games actually start.

You can post your misery posts in the game threads with the other emotional children.

It’s Opening Night, the Yankees are the Defending Champs and most baseball people think they are better this year.

It’s not a sin to be optimistic.

    ========================

I too found it a bit disturbing that they have so abruptly, and almost completely, terminated their coverage of yankee baseball, especially just after a championship season. I’ guessing they are experience some cutback nowadays.

  381. austinmac April 4th, 2010 at 9:52 am

I’m glad to read CC isn’t nervous today. I’m glad I’m not pitching because I’m nervous. I would like an over .500 April. It is a tough early schedule.

  382. Tom in N.J. April 4th, 2010 at 9:54 am

    New post

  384. SJ44 April 4th, 2010 at 9:58 am

I don’t see anything to be nervous about.

These early games, while overhyped, are not “big” games. Teams are playing their way into the season.

It’s a LONG season. I think all if us forget just how long it is.

You just take it day by day and see what happens. It’s why the players have the proper perspective on it.

Given that they started out 0-8 against Boston and 15-17 in their first 32 games, yet still won the WS, I think that should keep folks from making too much out of the early part of the season.

  385. blake April 4th, 2010 at 9:59 am

I think you could make the argument that Pedroia is better than Cano at this moment in time. However, this time next year I’m not sure that will still be the case. They are both great players, but Cano is one step away from Utley territory IMO.
I don’t think Pedroia has that same ceiling.

MTU, like the predictions…opposing AAA pitchers will consider it a success to just survive their Montero encounters ;)

  386. pistol pete April 4th, 2010 at 11:15 am

I hate to admit it but right now Pedroia is better than Cano. He won an MVP. He was a center piece of a championship instead of a fringe contributor like Cano. He bats in an important part of the line up. He’s a good fielder, a gamer, and tough as nails. That said he doesn’t have the talent level of Cano. Cano is a better hitter, has more power, and in my opinion is a better fielder. He makes plays in the field that leave you speechless, he has a better arm than Pedroia. At this point it’s all about intangibles with Cano, not talent. He needs to hit in the clutch better, hit better with RISP and needs to concentrate in the field better on routine plays. He’s batted down in the lineup most of his career because every time they’ve moved him up he’s failed. This is a huge year for him batting 5th, an important RBI position and well protected between Arod and Posada. He must suceed here to be considered better than Pedroia. Remember superstars don’t bat 7th where Cano has hibernated his whole career. This is a huge year for him, I hoping he breaks out.

  387. charlestonchew April 4th, 2010 at 12:49 pm

Zobrist is probably better than Cano and Pedroia – let’s be honest. He and Chase Utley put up similar numbers last year. That’s saying something.

Cano might end up with better stats batting in the 5-hole behind A-Rod, though. Cano is more talented than Pedroia, but Pedroia can steal bases. That’s his real advantage. He isn’t better than Cano for average, RBI, power, or fielding. He’s lagging behind in all of those categories.

Let’s call it even until we see differently.

  388. Tennore April 4th, 2010 at 6:40 pm

Great work, Cashman! Nice offseason, and I am looking forward to the season. I think this year more than any other I am looking at some of the ones who didn’t make the 25 man; I think some of these are already decent major league quality.

  389. Yankees April 13th, 2010 at 1:44 pm

I’ve been a Yankee fan since 2000!!!It’s been a crazy 10 years. We’ve definitely seen the highs and lows of this team.
