Burnett returning to Fenway

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Apr 06, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

A.J. Burnett was almost untouchable in his two Fenway Park starts in 2008, but he was infinitely hitable when he pitched there last year.

“Do you chalk it up to he got too involved in he rivalry? I don’t know,” Joe Girardi said. “Do you chalk it up to he just had a bad year? I don’t know. Obviously we’re going to be able to find out over the course of the season what he’s capable of doing.”

Tonight, Burnett will return to Boston with a chance to get the Yankees first win of the season. He’ll pitch to Jorge Posada, hoping to reconnect after the two struggled together last season.

“I’m going to have to pitch here eventually,” Burnett said. “It just happens to be the first start. That’s in the past, and I think it’s in the past for both of us. We’re just looking forward to getting out there and having fun together.”

Here’s Burnett talking to a few reporters on Sunday.

I’m confident that AJ will pitch well and that the Yankees will win.

  2. m April 6th, 2010 at 12:57 pm

AJ looked fine in his first 6 innings at Fenway in pinstripes. Whatever. We’re the world champs. :D

  3. m April 6th, 2010 at 12:57 pm

    Why so serious?

  5. Erin April 6th, 2010 at 12:59 pm

I think AJ will do fine tonight

It’s you. I don’t see any at all. Yay! Small victory. Those things are driving me nuts.

“Is it just me or are there a lot of Greek symbols in this post?”

    It’s all Greek to me.

(I have no idea what that means. More seriously, no symbols.)

  8. Frank April 6th, 2010 at 1:00 pm

Burnett’s always a coin flip. Wouldn’t really want to guess what he brings tonight. Lester has been a historically slow starter, so I’d bank more on the Yankees capitalizing on that than I would Burnett shutting them down.

  9. Erin April 6th, 2010 at 1:01 pm

I am still convinced that their inability to get on the same page caused the problems between Jorge and AJ. Someone wisely pointed out last season that they didn’t have an entire ST together and that could have been part of the problem. Hell, even AJ said they were bad vibes between them last seasonj. How much more proof do you want that there were problemrs????

That said, I am hopeful that having an entire ST together, they have been able to iron out the wrinkles.

By the way, I am not “blaming” either of them as it is ludicrous to put all the oweness on any one shoulder. As my father would always say, three sides to every story: mine, yours, and the truth. And by the way2, if it ever happened that they could not work out their stuff (I don’t believe that will be the case seriously) I would be all for having Cervelli be AJ’s personal catcher.

Bottom line – I’m about winning the games, not about forcing a fit.

I’m not going to make it out to be THAT big of a deal, but does anyone else find it perplexing as to why the Yankees open and close their season in Fenway?

Why is it that we couldn’t have our ring ceremony at home with Boston watching like they did at the start of the 2005 season in front of the Yankees? In all fairness, we should have opened in Boston and closed in New York or vice versa, I don’t care which.

Also- Am I the only one who misses seeing Chad & Sam’s smiling faces as the respective author on each new post???

M, I still think the article was rubbish. How is Phil or any young pitcher supposed to develop if you keep taking the short view? If Joba had pitched better in 2010, Phil would be in the rotation this year and we wouldn’t have Vasquez.

As to AJ, I think he’s spooked by Fenway now. I think he’s going to have a very fine year and I think his change will help, but I absolutely have no confidence in him in Fenway. I still want to see him dominate like he did with the Jays; even though he didn’t dominate all the time, I still don’t think we saw his best stuff last year. I don’t recall being overwhelmed by his FB like I’ve seen when he’s pitched against the Yankees.

“I’m not going to make it out to be THAT big of a deal, but does anyone else find it perplexing as to why the Yankees open and close their season in Fenway?”

It’s boring and tedious, but no, it’s not perplexing. MLB probably think it increases interest in the sport, and it has the added benefit of potentially putting the hated Yankees at a disadvantage.

I’m not sure if you counted it or not because I didnt have a chance to check back on the blog. If you did, Thanks!! If you didn’t, well just remember that I had to sit through a loss at Fenway and was subjected to hearing 35,000 bostonias screaming sweet caroline along with Neil Diamond ( who was horrible btw!)…. ;)

“As to AJ, I think he’s spooked by Fenway now.”

Boy I hope not. I think the key to pitching to Boston is really not getting beat by the back of that lineup.

Youk is a beast as is VMart. Jacoby and The Laptop are also tough outs.

But Drew, Scutero, Beltre, Cameron, and most of all Papi should really be attacked. Despite what ESPN wants you to believe, this is not like Millar, Nixon and Mueller at the end of a lineup.

Steven Tyler annihilating the National Anthem AND Neil Diamond singing Sweet Caroline. Of course, Sweet Caroline has everything to do with baseball!!! Uh…it doesn’t?

Sorry but I think everything about fenway is idiotic.

And hey, how about the vomit green pea shooter they call home? What an ugly little ball park. (McCoy is pretty nice by the way.)

  34. RayVT April 6th, 2010 at 1:13 pm

Well, I for one don’t mind playing the RSox in the first & last series at Boston. The 1st series is always tough because RSox still think they are in it. The last week is when they realize they are out of it so it doesn’t matter. Of course it would be grand to knock them out of a WC at their home field. Sometimes, justice overcomes deviants plans.

  35. GiambisGoldenThong April 6th, 2010 at 1:14 pm

If I find a good picture, I’ll toss it out there but leave the judging to someone else.

The 2005 Red Sox opened their season with 3 in the Bronx. The 2008 Red Sox played 7 games in three countries before their 1st home game. It’s strictly business with the schedule maker, not personal.

  43. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 6th, 2010 at 1:19 pm

William Buckner, when AJ is good, he can beat anyone. I just can’t come up with a reason why he was so hideous there last year. It’s certainly different pitching there as a Yankees rather than a Jay, but I don’t think that would account for why he was so dreadful.

  44. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes April 6th, 2010 at 1:20 pm

    Nick in SF/Buddy Biancalana,

Are you guys going to any of the Yankees vs. A’s games in April or July?

I got a “lil Yankee fan” on the way in June and as a result am skipping out on the April series, but I fully intend to hit up at least one of the games in July if you want to meet up again, grab a beer(s), and watch the Yankees dominate the A’s.

I think the Rangers (hockey) played that song in their locker room after wins a couple of seasons back.

With traditions like that it’s no wonder they went 54 years without a Cup.

Perhaps someone should do a study that analyzes the link between Neil Diamond and chronic losing.

    Uh huhhh.

Jay-Z would rough him up big time in a fight, no? :)

  57. upstate kate April 6th, 2010 at 1:28 pm

This early in the seaon, the game is most likely going to be decided by the relievers anyway, so hopefully AJ keeps it close.

I like this year’s schedule. It seems to me that the Yankees always struggle early, so I just as soon have some of the games w/ tougher opponents over now (if you are going to lose, at least lose to a good team) I am also happy that, except for Texas, the west coast trips are finished by the ASB. And I would guess there are fans of other teams who are complaining about that.

Not going to lie, I was excited for Steven Tyler ( i really like Aerosmith) but he was definitely on something during that performance…

The Neil Diamond thing was just sickening though. I actually like the song ( :hangs head in shame:) but after that horrific performance and all the boston fans cheering like maniacs, I dont think I can listen to it anymore lol.

  66. Frank April 6th, 2010 at 1:35 pm

“It’s the last series at Fenway that appears to be personal. The RS didn’t face that in 2007.”

It’s a strange schedule. Aside from the beginning and end, it’s unusual that 9 consecutive games in the season series will be played at NYS. FWIW, I’d rather have the home series on 9/24-9/96 than the one on 10/1 – 10/3 as the late September games are more likely to be meaningful than the early October ones.

  67. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes April 6th, 2010 at 1:36 pm

I know he’s like 4’9″ or something, but clearly Paul Simon is a far superior musician than Neil Diamond. I bet he too would beat down the Diamond in a fist fight and while kicking him in the head, Paul would no doubt yell “You can call me Daddy”.

  68. m April 6th, 2010 at 1:37 pm

What does YMCA and Cotton Eye Joe have to do with the Yankees? I don’t hate on them like Pete did, but none if it really makes sense at all.

He’s semi-retired, likely to go to HOF as a Red Sock, and a pretty big part of the NYY/Bos rivalry reviving itself to something close to the way it was in mid-late 70′s. Didn’t have any real problem with that.

Looking through Burnett’s gamelog from last year, I saw that in his 20IP vs. BOS he allowed 23H, 20ER, 16BB, 16SO, 6HR, and an 8.85 ERA. Against everyone else, 187IP, 170H, 73ER, 81BB, 179SO, 19HR, 3.52 ERA. I think it was Frank that mentioned earlier about AJ being a coin flip, and I felt the exact same way. However, it looks like he was actually pretty consistent–he really struggled against BOS with the exception of that one start and was really successful against everyone else.

2008 was kind of the opposite for AJ, he dominated the Yankees, was very solid against BOS, and had an ERA of 4.92 against all other opponents. So maybe it is a coin flip with him?

I could be wrong, but I don’t think they mentioned the Zimmer fight video on YES.

    Stay classy, Boston.

  82. Frank April 6th, 2010 at 1:52 pm

“My main problem with the Pedro was thing was that they showed the Zimmer fight on the big screen and the stadium went crazy. Totally uncesessary IMO”

Yeah, it was. Zimmer’s not too popular in that town. Bobby Sprowl and all the ’78 stuff left a bad taste. Still, no real reason to play that.

  85. G. Love April 6th, 2010 at 1:54 pm

I think I’ve come to the realization that it doesn’t matter who starts for either Boston or the Yankees when they play one another, as that joke of a park and both teams hitters patience turn every game into pinball.

I would love to see AJ pitch 7 innings of 2 run ball, but these games in Boston never seem to shake out that way. That’s why it was so impressive, to me, when Joba dueled Beckett that start in Fenway in 2008.

I hope we do the same kind of damage to Lester that we did to Beckett the other night. As long as their starters know they are going to get smacked around that park when the Yankees come to town, we’ll own them. Our pen won’t be as leaky later in the season as it was the other night and CC will be better conditioned to go longer in the game.

  86. Roger(live from Amsterdam) April 6th, 2010 at 1:55 pm

Swisher has to bat before Granderson with Lester pitching:

    Jeter SS
    Johnson DH
    Tex 1B
    Rodriguez 3B
    Cano 2B
    Posada C
    Swisher RF
    Granderson CF
    Gardner LF

  87. William Buckner April 6th, 2010 at 1:55 pm

    Thong,

You’re right I forgot, Dustin didn’t steal the laptops. Regardless, he is still a tough out.

    Betsy,

I think with AJ you can almost tell in the first inning. If he has control of the curveball, he’s going to have a good night. The game in Fenway last year where he and Posada had all those problems, he had no curve.

The classic he and Beckett had at YS, he had a great curve. And with him, it doesn’t seem to come and go. Either he has it or he doesn’t.

Mel, I can at least S-T-R-E-T-C-H my imagination far enough to think that Cotton Eyed Joe might have been for Joe Torre. And YMCA is cleaning the field entertainment.

But what in hell Sweet Caroline has to do with the Red Sox is beyond me. I think it is a gay gay gay gay song to be played at a baseball game.

That said, it suits them well.

    G. Love,

“that joke of a park and both teams hitters patience turn every game into pinball.”

Joke is an apt description, I absolutely hate how that place rewards pop-ups and punishes rocket line drives–outside of there Pedroia would have simply had a deep flyout and A-Rod would have had a no-doubt homerun.

“I hope we do the same kind of damage to Lester that we did to Beckett the other night. As long as their starters know they are going to get smacked around that park when the Yankees come to town”

Despite popular opinion, Lester is significantly better than Beckett, but I too hold out some hope that the Yankees will get his number too. I’m always confident they can hit Beckett and hopefully that performance late in 2009 against Lester will be something they can continue.

“Our pen won?t be as leaky later in the season as it was the other night and CC will be better conditioned to go longer in the game.”

No doubt. If it were midseason, there would have been no arguments about pulling CC, as he would have easily carried the game through to Robertson/Mo.

GG, absolutely I didn’t. And I am an HR attorney so even more so I wouldn’t knowingly use a word that I felt would disparage anybody. Maybe it’s a regional “no biggie” but people around here use it pretty freely as a word to trivialize things – and that’s how I meant it. It was very unPC in the past, but at least around here it seems that people have gotten over getting their backs up when the word is used (unless someone is intending it to be a homophobic slur).

    Thanks for understanding.

Glad to help on the DKM’s.

Congrats on adding a little princess to the fold. If she isn’t born on a Yankee b-day or the Yankees lose on that day, just tell folks she was conceived the night the Yankees clinched the 2009 AL East. That should be more than good enough.

Best wishes to you and the Mad Princess.

  165. Chip April 6th, 2010 at 2:54 pm

Earlier today on WFAN Sweeny Murti was defending Posada, wondering why it is that in this Burnett/Posada thing fans and the media are willing to give the benefit of the doubt to a .500 pitcher and not a borderline hall of fame catcher. The answer is that if this was an isolated incident Posada would get the benefit of the doubt, but it isn’t. Jorge has had issues with different pitchers for years – Mussina, Johnson, just to name two.

The theory has always been that because Jorge is such a good hitter he calls pitches as if he was in the batting box whereas a pitcher wants a catcher who is going to call a game that the pitcher is comfortable with. When those two schools clash Jorge’s temper gets the better of him.

On another note – love the NY Post…highest of high comedy. George Young III is already saying that the Yankees made a mistake putting Hughes in the rotation instead of Mitre and not putting Hughes in the pen.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I can’t get concerned after game 1. Can’t get concerned after game 9….unless they are 0-9.

I will say I’m a little concerned in looking at Joba. He’s listed at 6’2″ 230lbs. If Joba Chamberlain is 230lbs then Derek Jeter must weigh 70 pounds. I wonder if Joba would benefit from laying off the post game buffet a little bit.

It is not unusual for Pitcher & a Catcher to disagree and even argue to the point of wanting to fight.

As a rule Catchers are pretty tough and confident. They almost have to be to survive.

Most Pitchers are ego maniacs and rarely accept any responsibility for anything that goes wrong. I mean if you look at most of them, they never lost a game all the way thru HS and probably College too. Most have even stared in the minors. They aren’t ready to accept blame, because they almost never had too.

The hard part is airing it on the field or in the press. If AJ had done his spiel with Munson, AJ would have been on the DL getting his jaw rewired.

“The theory has always been that because Jorge is such a good hitter he calls pitches as if he was in the batting box whereas a pitcher wants a catcher who is going to call a game that the pitcher is comfortable with.”

I can’t buy this. I can see clashes developing over Posada’s knowledge of AL hitters vs. what a given pitcher might be comfortable with in a particular situation, but the idea that Posada’s catching with a hitter’s frame of mind seems pretty bogus.

“If you meant silly say silly. You’re a former HR attorney and know better than to be inflammatory to make a point.”

No, I’m pretty sure she meant to say “gay,” whatever she meant by it.

Far as I’m concerned, no group owns a word and controls how it may be used. The meaning of the word was taken over and put to good use by a group of people unfairly attacked and persecuted by others. But today, as happens with words and history, things change and the word is now used in a different way by some to mean something “silly” or unimaginative or boring. Thankfully, time marches on.

Inflammatory – even unintentionally inflammatory – rhetoric is a pretty time-honored American tradition, especially when it comes to sports and politics. It may not be particularly persuasive, but inflammatory speech does get the competitive juices flowing.

I probably wouldn’t have used the word myself – I still recall The Stonewall Riots and the world before 1969. But I defend to the death trisha’s right to free expression… as long as it doesn’t violate the user agreement of this blog ;)

  197. Chip April 6th, 2010 at 3:10 pm

I don’t know that Sweeny was “attacking” AJ so much as he was defending Jorge.

As for pitchers vs. catchers – it’s one of the rare times I’m going to agree with Jim Kaat. There is no statistic for wins or losses by a catcher. The best catchers are the guys who sit quietly behind the plate, put their glove up and catch the ball.

I respect Jorge and what he’s meant to this club, but I’ve never been as high on him as some others. I won’t mind seeing him phased out by Montero, not because I think Montero will be Jose Molina defensively, but because I think Montero will take direction from the pitchers more than the other way around.

  198. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 6th, 2010 at 3:11 pm

Chip, it still sounds asinine. Neither AJ nor Jorge were at fault and AJ’s record has nothing to do with this. If anyone’s to blame, it’s Joe.

  199. RayVT April 6th, 2010 at 3:12 pm

upstate kate April 6th, 2010 at 3:02 pm

Jorge is a hard worker. He learned from an extremely smart & studious Catcher named Joe G & listened to another great Catcher Joe T. He studies the hitters, probably more than the pitchers. Thinking like a hitter is a perspective that most Pitchers can’t understand. Posada calls a good game. His arm is well above average. His hitting is superb for a Catcher. His knowledge of AL East hitters is tremedous.

Mussina was probably more than his match in studying hitters. Mike didn’t like anyone. LOL! He knew what he wanted to pitch and when. So someone like Posada would have been tedious for him.

    RJ hated everyone. Nuff said!

Sometimes a person has success as a Pitcher and they don’t want to change things. AJ, JC & others come to mind. AJ wants to throw fastballs thru the bat & Joba lives off his slider. Posada knows if tendencies are obvious that hitters will kill the pitcher no matter where placements are. (Except maybe Mo or a knuckleball pitcher.) Thus the clash!

  200. Erin April 6th, 2010 at 3:12 pm

One guy pitches every five days and when he does the crowd hangs on his every pitch, as do the batter, catcher, fielders, managers, sportscasters, sponsors and scouts. And maybe his family and his agent. Ideally, this guy does his thing at least one hundred times per game, sometimes more, and with the expectation of a vast out-performance of the solo pitcher vs. each of the opponent’s batters, three, four or more times each.

The other guy wears the tools of ignorance, squats for three hours or so maybe 150 times or more a year in grueling heat or freezing cold, pitiless sunshine or deadening rain. He has to out-think the hitter and the pitcher, the manager and umpire and every single know-it-all in the press box and peanut gallery. For that privilege he gets hit with baseball bats, foul tips, sliding or crashing base runners and insults.

Put an extreme personality in either place and you can have fireworks. Put an extreme personality in both spots and you either have lightning in a bottle or skunked beer. Last year it was the latter. This year I’m expecting lightning.

If I am understanding correctly, what you are saying is Jorge does both. He studies the hitters and also decides what pitch to call as a good hitter himself.

I think Jorge doesn’t get enough credit for his game calling, where Varitek, for example, gets too much credit for calling a good game.

BOSTON — New York Yankees president Randy Levine fired an executive-level brush-back pitch at Milwaukee Brewers owner Mark Attanasio.
    Levine’s message: Stop whining.
Levine believes Attanasio should stop publicly lamenting the Brewers’ troubles in signing first baseman Prince Fielder while pointing out how much the Yankees spend on salaries.
“I’m sorry that my friend Mark continues to whine about his running the Brewers,” Levine told ESPNNewYork.com in a phone interview Tuesday morning. “We play by all the rules and there doesn’t seem to be any complaints when teams such as the Brewers receive hundreds of millions of dollars that they get from us in revenue sharing the last few years. Take some of that money that you get from us and use that to sign your players.
“The question that should be asked is: Where has the hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue sharing gone?”
The Yankees’ payroll is expected to be about $200 million this year; the Brewers’ will be in the $80 million range.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/newy.....id=5060292

Levine made his comments in reaction to an Attanasio quote in a USA Today story about the average salaries of this year’s players. Attanasio — as he has done before — made sure to mention the discrepancy in how much the Yankees spend on players in comparison to other teams.

Betsy, I am not arguing. I have friends that played on those Munson Yankee teams. Ask GB or SJ or Randy. Munson put the team 1st. AJ, while perhaps his intent wasn’t to show up anyone else, did! That would have been corrected.

  231. Frank April 6th, 2010 at 3:26 pm

“It’s over……well, not in the media, but that’s their problem.”

Way I see it Betsy is that the personal relationship piece of it is over, but how they work together as a battery is still a little up in the air. AJ was pretty piss poor in Spring Training. Granted ST numbers are not the end all and be all, but he allowed a ton of baserunners and walked more than he struck out. Most, if not all of that was with Posada behind the plate. Despite some good starts with Posada behind the plate last season, the overall numbers for that battery on the year were not good.

    OMG MESSI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    And Barca are moving on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  239. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 6th, 2010 at 3:28 pm

Frank, it’s ST – who cares about his #s? I don’t want to get into this again; AJ did fine with Jorge during his best stretch of pitching last year. If he has bad games, it has nothing to do with the catcher. It’s the same as if CC, Andy, Javy or whomever have bad games – Jorge is not to blame, it’s on the pitcher.

  240. Doreen - 2010 GTLU April 6th, 2010 at 3:28 pm

The Red Sox lineup is up, so I’m expecting the Yankee lineup soon.

  241. CR9 April 6th, 2010 at 3:29 pm

    Roger

Well, Arsenal’s defense is terrible! Messi has more surrounding talent than Rooney.

  242. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes April 6th, 2010 at 3:30 pm

    Betsy/Greg,

Let’s just leave well enough alone okay? You guys obviously aren’t fond of one another so let’s just accept that, ignore one another, and cease throwing unnecessary quips back and forth.

Just trying to mediate, hope you guys don’t get angry with me :~

  243. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes April 6th, 2010 at 3:31 pm

    CR9/Roger,

Rooney is INCREDIBLE. That guy is a beast and is still pretty darned young. Man U. is going to be very fortunate to have had Rooney when its all said and done.

  244. Roger(live from Amsterdam) April 6th, 2010 at 3:31 pm

A LOT more. How do you watch you’re normal(not Cl games) over there? Is it on espn?

  245. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 6th, 2010 at 3:32 pm

Mad, I didn’t start it…. I refuse to sit back and be insulted. I don’t have a problem with anyone on this board, yet people want to insult and attack me. Sorry – I’m not putting up with that anymore. I don’t care if he likes me, but there is NO call to be insulting.

  246. Doreen - 2010 GTLU April 6th, 2010 at 3:32 pm

Would have been valuable information earlier today. :)

    Ledger_Yankees
Something to know: Brett Gardner has never faced lefty John Lester. Marcus Thames has 2 ABs, one of them a home run. #nyy

  247. Doreen - 2010 GTLU April 6th, 2010 at 3:34 pm

And yes, now I am following Twitter as part of my GTLU duties…

I wasn’t getting as deep as that.

I just think an “I’m sorry” is usually more useful than entrenching when intent is misunderstood.

  251. CR9 April 6th, 2010 at 3:36 pm

On Tuesdays. they one is on FOX SPorts net and the other on Fox soccer channel.

On wednesdays, one is on Fox soccer channel and the other on fox soccer plus.

During group stages, there are UEFA channels on Directv for free that you get every game.

And also the UEFA cup games, like what Pool are in right now.

Yes he does both. His job is to know what is working and to keep a Pitcher from being predictable unless it is warranted.

Some pitchers keep a score card in their minds. When something works it is because of the Pitcher. When something goes wrong its the Ump or Catcher.

Since so many people were ripping Attanasio yesterday, I figured Levine would get cheered for his comments today. I guess the mob truly is fickle, haha. Anyway, I’m glad he stood up for the Yankees.

  259. William Buckner April 6th, 2010 at 3:38 pm

“CR9, the Liverpool wheels have come off to be sure.”

As a Liverpool fan, I think Rafa can take much of the blame. I keep hearing about spending, spending. He’s spent enough, just not well.

They’ve totally lost their attacking style and he’s under used Aquilani. Torres is right. They need maybe 4 quality new guys. Especially someone up front.

But if they retain Torres, and Girard returns to form, they could return to the top four next year. I really like Glen Johnson, Aquilani, and Rodriguez. I think Kuyt may be past it.

I’m really hoping Rafa goes to Italy and they get McLeish. I think he’d make a huge upgrade.

  260. JohnC April 6th, 2010 at 3:39 pm

This is what Thames was brought here for. To provide some offense against lefties. Hope he gets off to a good start. Good test for him against a real tough lefty

  261. Frank April 6th, 2010 at 3:40 pm

    Betsy:

I qualified the meaning of the ST numbers. Further, it’s not about blame. It’s about what works. Those meaningless ST numbers happen to mirror the numbers that Burnett put up when he and Posada were working together last year. Much as I disagreed with it, the Burnett/Posada battery was viewed as enough of an issue in the eyes of Yankees management, that they scrapped it for the playoffs. Again, not an indictment of either guy, but rather going with what they thought would work best. This is a new year and they’re going to try it again, and I applaud the effort. However, the jury on how it’ll work remains out for now.

  262. RayVT April 6th, 2010 at 3:41 pm

Betsy I enjoy your take on things. I don’t always agree, but I read your posts!

  263. The Mad Prince in Pinstripes April 6th, 2010 at 3:43 pm

    Buckner,

I agree…the biggest problem is Rafa.

I think they are fools if they ever let Torres get away from them. I don’t see that happening any time soon though.

That dude Jovanavic is supposed to join us and then there was another guy…name escapes me, from Turkey or or something like that who said he intends to play for Liverpool next season. Sounds like the interest is there…

The only song about Boston I can think of is “The Man Who Never Returned” by the Kingston Trio.

    ———————————————————————————————————————-

    The song is “The MTA”.

Another somg was “Please Come To Boston” by Dave Loggins.

  266. GreenBeret7 April 6th, 2010 at 4:23 pm

I noticed some clown brought up the Posada/ Burnett non-issue by quoting a remark made by of all people, Sweeney Murti…another NY media jackazs…mentioning Mussina and Randy Johnson. The only two people they got along with was themselves. If you remember, Mussina had a habit of glaring at players who had the temerity to make an error behind him. They should have glared at him when he gave up a home run.
