Pretty impressive showing by the Yanks (and the bullpen) in this series.
They were forced to come into Fenway to start the season and face the alleged top three best starters in the history of the game and still beat them 2 of 3.
Could very easily have been a sweep. Outstanding bounce back outing for Park (and the bullpen in general the last two nights).
Here’s hoping the LoHuders will stop with the ridiculous obsession with the Red Sox for awhile (or at least until they meet again in a few weeks).
I’m glad the series is over. Too much nonsense when these two teams meet.
Now we’ll have to hear the chicken littles (trademarked my SJ) whine about the Rays this weekend.
The schedule-makers were not kind to the Yanks this year the first few weeks of the season. Lots of tough games still ahead (TB, LAA and TEX).
On the first pitch Granderson saw a 90mph two seamer from Papelbon and fouled it off.
Papelbon then tried to bust Granderson inside with a 4 seamer. It was a 94 mph fastball that missed it’s spot and tailed back over the middle and up.
And Granderson just crushed it. What an explosive swing. That’s not even a swing that is trying to hit a home run or trying to upper cut the ball. Granderson has a pretty level swing plane.
But Papelbon just made a mistake – not horrible – and Curtis just destroyed the pitch.
GF, I won’t be whining, but there’s nothing wrong with respecting a worthy opponent. I agree with your post; I’m glad to be getting out of Dodge. Sox/Yankee games give me agita, to be honest.

Kennedy had a mixed night for ‘Zona tonight, but, not that bad. 5 innings, 6 hits, 3 runs (all earned), 0 walks and 8 strikeouts.
Matsui is 2-2 so far.
Jackson is 2-5 with a triple but 2 strikeouts.
Damon is 0-5 with 2 strikeouts.
Cabrera was 1-4.
No statements involved. Just an update for their fans.
Flaherty said on YES that Granderson was a Yankees because of the HRs he’s hit here…….what a dumb thing to say. He was a Yankee as soon as the trade went through.
Interesting turn of events for the Sox pen tonight.
Papelbon threw 25 pitches. 24 were fastballs. 17 four seamers and 8 two seamers. He only threw one slider. No splits.
Granderson fouled off a two seamer.
Papelbon then got burned with a four seam fastball – his best pitch.
Bard threw 15 pitches. 11 of them were fastballs. He threw one change, one slider, one curve and one pitch which was probably a two seamer (might have been a second change).
It was that two seamer/ change that Swisher got the hit on. The pitch had some arm side run and missed inside and ran out over the plate.
Papelbon got beat with his “best pitch.”
Bard got beat with his “second pitch.”
We focus alot on pitch selection but so much of pitching is location and mistakes on location.
Rich in NJ…….O walks, 8 k’s…….Youthrow strikes, you’re going to serve up a few long balls….As you know, as long as they’re solo shots…Catfish & Palmer always had high hr #’s but they never walked guys and always pitched to the scorboard….Well maybe not CY or Cry Palmer as he was always hung up on his stats……Ian is going to be a 14-15 win type pitcher…..
So CB, should we then conclude that Martinez called a really poor game? How can Papelbon throw 24 fastballs and expect to hit his spot with every single one? You have to mix in some offspeed stuff to keep hitters off balance.
tex had a poor start last year as well.. most of the yankees did for that matter. that being said, they’re off to a great start so far and are slowly working into themselves. it’s scary to think what kind of damage this offense will do in a few months.
CB, Swisher was all over a 99 heater that he fouled back before he laced his single to right……Paps threw 25 pitches and must have rifled at least 5 more to first……Curtis hit homeruns over both bullpens……Nice start to the 2010 campaign
“should we then conclude that Martinez called a really poor game? How can Papelbon throw 24 fastballs and expect to hit his spot with every single one? You have to mix in some offspeed stuff to keep hitters off balance.”
Bard tried to do just that – mix pitches and he got beat on that change.
Pitches have to be executed – it’s very hard to make up for a mistake. That’s the point I was trying to make because both Papelbon and Bard got beat in very different ways.
You can’t blame the catcher. For whatever reason Papelbon stopped throwing pitches other than his fastball last year. That predated Martinez.
One difference between them was that Bard and Martinez weren’t reading that at bat right. I think they were outthinking themselves as Swisher was not getting great swings off bard’s fastball.
It was as if they were thinking ok we have to avoid getting predictable let’s go change up. And last year Nick doesn’t hit that pitch.
But ultimately Bard threw his third or fourth pitch and got burned.

I’d guess that would be a contributing factor as to why he’s not throwing it as much. Weird thing is, I always thought his problems were more with his shoulder than his elbow.
Another thing I thought of could be that it’s a bit of a spiral effect. He got away from it for whatever reason last year and then just didn’t use it and didn’t use it then lost the feel for it…

I don’t think the splitter is much more stress on the arm than a fastball. It’s basically the same throwing motion, just a different grip and maybe a bit more downward snap with your wrist.

Yeah, he had the shoulder injuries. Just wondering if his elbow might have weakened and started barking last season. Still outstanding numbers but the walks took a big jump.

Quite possible. Don’t know if you’re familiar with a stat known as FIP at all, GB. Explanation here…
Anyways, if you look at that stat, it shows that Papelbon wasn’t as good last year as his traditional numbers showed. Which, meets the eye test of the times I saw him pitch last year as well…
Do you agree that players such as Kevin Brown, Randy Johnson and Carl Pavano have been received differently that players like Matsui, Damon, Teixerira?
If so, how does one describe it exactly?
The sentiment has been used more to describe when fans fully embrace new players.
All of these guys are Yankees the first time they put on the uniform.

All except pitching great Robin Roberts, who was a Yankee for 5 months. Bought from the Phillies in October of 1961 and released in May of 1062 without ever getting into a Yankee game.

Familiar with it, but, not a follower of the magic formulas. Never interested me. Too many things are left to guesswork and interpretation.
I think the Red Sox are really going to have problems against good starting pitching this year. The total runs will be there at the end of the year because they do have enough offense to beat up on bad pitching and middle relievers, but that lineup can really be exposed.
Pettitte on a limited pitch count and without his best stuff held them to 1 run in 6 innings in Fenway. Considering how much their offense is built around that park that really is remarkable. They are just incredibly dependent on Youkilis. With Bay hitting behind Youk last year, you really had to think twice about who you were going to go after. With Ortiz behind him there really is no question. You can simply attack the lineup really only having to worry about one guy beating you.
1-9 they have above average hitters, but above average hitters are not the ones who are beating guys like CC, Greinke, Verlander, Felix, Lee, Buerhle, etc. Those type of guys are too good to let the Cameron, Beltre, Scutaro, Papi, string together hits resulting in runs. Hitters like Youk are the ones who are able to get to really good pitchers. And there is only one Youk-type hitter in the lineup.
As per MLB the Cubs have the most expensive non premium sections tickets $52.56, Red Sux are second $52.32, and the Yankees third $51.83. The Diamonbacks have the lowest $14.31
“Matsui, Damon and Tex are all likeable people…but I’m not sure what your point is?”
You described how fans have been critical of Granderson. Someday those fans who have been critical if him may give in to accepting him. It might be particular moment when their reservations mostly have way. For Granderson it might have to be a big hit against a lefty for a walk-off.
I’m just describing how the term “moment they became a Yankees” is used. I’m simply asking if you believe there are MOMENTS when fans fully embrace new players?
Oh, I don’t know Stuckey – maybe for others, not for me. The moment a player signs his contract or a deal goes through, they are Yankees to me and don’t have anything to prove. It’s just another way for Yankee fans to show how snobby they can be.
For me, I embraced Curtis Granderson as a NY Yankee the day the trade was announced…….Now that the season is underway, the next baseball ritual that I look forward to is GB’s minor league reports & updates…..It’s almost like listening to games on the radio as a kid……..A summer bonus of sorts for me…….
What’s even more incredible about the Pettitte performance tonight was the fact that he was getting cheated (squeezed) all game, and was forced to get more than 3 outs in multiple innings.
Sneaky Pete Abe asked Mariano before the game about the no hitting Otiz ruckus, in the papers. Mo hadn’t heard about it, so Pete filled Mo in. Mo’s reaction was really , after only two games if you are trying to decide on a player, you don’t know baseball. Mo says David remains a dangerous hitter that has his respect!
I miss Pete Abe & his insight. Sam & Chad just aren”t cutting it as evidenced by this post.
Since Pete left I am always wanting more & seem to be left hanging… More questions than answers. When I go back to review a game post, I can’t figure out what took place.
The “writers” who negatively compared him to Damon and Matsui should find another line of work.
Wow, that’s crazy, Chad – and nice picture, lol!
Granderson is a wonderful guy who is probably already loved in the clubhouse; he’s also a wonderful player who showed what he’s made of this series.
Yeah, Rich – garbagemen. Some fans have done the same as well…
Granderson to Papelbon: “Brett OWNS you, but you are my b….”
Damon and Matsui who?
that is a sick stat
who was ripping Granderson after Game 1?
how bout some egg in yo face.
A new Yankee classic on YES. Great clutch hitting by Swish and Granderson. Gardner proved Nay Sayers why his intangibles are so important.
Pettitte is amazing to come back from that knock down. Pavano would have been in traction.

and Farnsworth breaks a top of the 11th tie…

Former Yankees tonight:
Kennedy – 5 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 0 BB, 8 K
Ohlendorf – 5 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K
Melky – 1-4
Jackson – 2-5, triple
Damon – 0-5
Ian Kennedy whiffed 8 in 5 innings….He served up a 3 run dinger in the 2nd, but did alright otherwise…He’ll get a no decision…….
Kennedy is going to be a good one. I always thought he’d be a 15 game winner. Works quick, throws strikes, nice cuveball, nice K rates

Does Granderson has TEH CLUTCH yet?
It tastes all the sweeter because of all those dumb articles after the first game, questioning the Yanks.
The best thing about IPK’s outing is that he didn’t give up any BB, but he is probably always going to be vulnerable to giving up HR.
His avg. FB velo: 89.51
Max FB velo: 91.2
Said Park, “When Cameron hit that ball, I went, ‘Oh (bleep!),’ you know? It’s a good thing I threw him a fourseamer, the sink kept it in the park.”
http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/yankees/
NY sportswriters may actually have to write a positive story tomorrow. Should be interesting what they put out there.
I guess they could always fall back on Alex being unclutch since he grounded into that DP
and Detroit’s new closer with loss #1
Flaherty said on YES that Granderson was a Yankees because of the HRs he’s hit here…….what a dumb thing to say. He was a Yankee as soon as the trade went through.
So can I finally read the papers/website or listen to sports radio tomorrow?
ankiel takes Valverde of Detroit out of the park to even up the score at 2-2 in the 11th.
It feels like Jeter, Arod and Tex have been a bit invisible thus far.
That means very bad things for the rest of baseball. This team might have juggernaut written all over it.

He threw 3 four seamers to Swisher at 97, 97,97
Who got the belt tonight?
Or did they discontinue that after Damon left?
oooo[[s. it was an RBI double. Sizemore boots the relay to score winner.
Um – I would say Farnsworth’s win was a “Vulture win”
They appear to have discontinued it, which is too bad. The plastic belt was Damon’s, given to him by AJ’s sons…..I guess they never replaced it.
So CB, should we then conclude that Martinez called a really poor game? How can Papelbon throw 24 fastballs and expect to hit his spot with every single one? You have to mix in some offspeed stuff to keep hitters off balance.
FWIW, Swish called the Bard pitch that he hit a change.
They switched to a real championship belt which was then auctioned off for charity near the end of the season last year
tex had a poor start last year as well.. most of the yankees did for that matter. that being said, they’re off to a great start so far and are slowly working into themselves. it’s scary to think what kind of damage this offense will do in a few months.
Farnsworth was definately bailed out after giving up the tying run. Scherzer was very good with a 6 inning 1 hitter, 0 runs.
The point is, I guess no one bought a new belt….I really liked that tradition.
Holy crap ERica you are destroying me in fantasy right now. What the hell is going on
Pat M
True. Catfish was the king of the well-timed solo HR.
Betsy,
Yeah it was fun but I think this team wants to create it’s own identity.
CB, Swisher was all over a 99 heater that he fouled back before he laced his single to right……Paps threw 25 pitches and must have rifled at least 5 more to first……Curtis hit homeruns over both bullpens……Nice start to the 2010 campaign
I for one hope the retire the belt and I also hope they retire the pie.
I have/had nothing against either, btw. It’s just not 2009 anymore.
New season. Time for new traditions and wrinkles all its own.
This was a tough way to open the season for the hitters and pitchers as far as taking on the probable #2 or #3 team in baseball against the #1 team.
TylerKepner
How will Teixeira (0 for 12) spend the off-day in Tampa? Working with Kevin Long at Yanks’ minor league complex, mostly on his LH swing.
Bard’s got a little bit of Farnsworth in him. The fastball is uber fast, but straight.
I don’t think he’s going to blossom into what the Red Sox and their PR/Media is telling us he’s going to blossom into.
They have already said the pies will continue.
Tex does have 2 rbi’s !!!!
“should we then conclude that Martinez called a really poor game? How can Papelbon throw 24 fastballs and expect to hit his spot with every single one? You have to mix in some offspeed stuff to keep hitters off balance.”
Bard tried to do just that – mix pitches and he got beat on that change.

It was as if they were thinking ok we have to avoid getting predictable let’s go change up. And last year Nick doesn’t hit that pitch.
But ultimately Bard threw his third or fourth pitch and got burned.
Papelbon threw his best pitch and got burned.
Betsy, since Giambi became the first huge free agent to join the Yankee dynasty team and struggled early and then hit a walk-off grand slam against the Twins in the rain, the Yankees’ announcers have talked about the moment new Yankees pick-ups “became” Yankees… earned their pinstripes, so to speak.
Blyleven, Robin Roberts, Jim Kaat and Warren Spahn all gave up a ton of homers.
CB,
I’m pretty sure it was a changeup from Bard, in which case he got beat with his “third” pitch.
That curveball/slurve he was throwing was filthy (partially because hitters are forced to sit fastball).
Patrick, good point.
The pie is not being retired; that is not a 2009 Yankees thing – that’s something AJ has always done. I hope he never stops it as the fans love it and the players love it – there’s no doubt about that.
Stuckey, I think that’s asinine. No player has to “earn” his pinstripes……..not in my book.
I thought Mussina was the first huge FA to join the dynasty team?
I just want to see AJ pied for once…it stinks that he can only do that by pitching a complete game.
I’m saying I wish it would be.
I also think YMCA should have been retired 10 years ago… for the record.
Do you think that the slider and split finger of Papelbon’s hurt him too much to throw it? Those are tough on an elbow.
Rich, correct. But starting pitchers don’t have walk-off, singular moments like offensive players do.
Remember, it’s the “moment” they became Yankees. Not games.
Betsy, not advocating it, but it’s been something the broadcasters (especially Kay) have done since that Giambi game.
Michael Kay probably started it, lol – like he started that Generation Trey (ugh).
Fergie Jenkins was another pitcher who was committed to strike one and thus gave up a lot of solo shots.
I love this sentence from NESN.

Big challenge for the Twins bullpen. Getting 6 outs with a 3 run lead.

GF, the chicken littles/trolls are annoying as heck, but I can’t pretend not to respect the Rays or the Sox when we face them. It’s just not in me to say that the Yankees are going to roll over this division. I have a lot of confidence in the team, but I also know how good the others are.

Not sure why you seem to get defensive with my remarks. My criticisms above do not usually apply to you.

They better not blow the win for Pavano (me)!!!

Which, meets the eye test of the times I saw him pitch last year as well…
I need to go to sleep!
Good night Yankee people!
Giuseppe (and Betsy):
Just playing devil’s advocate.

I’m not defensive at all…
May of ***1962***
Whatever happened to the split-finger? In the 80′s and 90′s it was the pitch du jour (if memory serves, Sutter bringing it to prominence.
Seems to be becoming something of a dwindling (if not lost, yet) art these days…
Stuckey, I don’t recall the receptions for any of those players, but Kevin Brown and Randy Johnson were surly individuals while Pavano was…..Pavano.
Matsui, Damon and Tex are all likeable people…but I’m not sure what your point is?
The Grandyman can! Man I love it Sterling.

Pat
Just watched Parenthood. LOL. Minka was great, the Peter krause and wife scenes were HIGHlarious!
NESN suggest Lowell DH against left handed pitching ouch for Ortiz!
LOL @ at the Sleaze Ortiz!!!!
LGY
What’s even more incredible about the Pettitte performance tonight was the fact that he was getting cheated (squeezed) all game, and was forced to get more than 3 outs in multiple innings.
Sneaky Pete Abe asked Mariano before the game about the no hitting Otiz ruckus, in the papers. Mo hadn’t heard about it, so Pete filled Mo in. Mo’s reaction was really , after only two games if you are trying to decide on a player, you don’t know baseball. Mo says David remains a dangerous hitter that has his respect!
CRP, THe entire wowmen faking their organism is a way of thanking you for trying and turning in a good effort
Yeah, too funny. I love Krause!
Great show, very funny last night…….
I miss Pete Abe & his insight. Sam & Chad just aren”t cutting it as evidenced by this post.
Since Pete left I am always wanting more & seem to be left hanging… More questions than answers. When I go back to review a game post, I can’t figure out what took place.
Jay, you can find Pete over at The Globe.
He’s missing you.
