Girardi: “The culmination of all the emotions”

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Podcast on Apr 13, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

We have the audio from Joe Girardi’s pregame media session, but first this little tidbit.

Jerry Hairston Jr. is here. The Padres have an off day, so Hairston flew to New York to get his ring. He’s been shaking a lot of hands and saying a lot of hellos.

Yankees Home Opener Baseball

As for Girardi, nothing has changed since yesterday, so there wasn’t much to talk about. At one point, there was complete silence in the press conference room.

Most of his discussion was about Hideki Matsui.

• Girardi said he has “matchup ideas” for Hideki Matsui, but it also “depends on where we’re at” in the game.

• “If you don’t execute your pitch, Hideki Matsui is going to hurt you,” Girardi said. “We know that.”

• Girardi said today’s ring ceremony will be “the culmination of all the emotions we had last year.”

• On Pettitte: “We’ve been pretty consistent on how many pitches we let guys go this time of the year, and Andy’s never really been a guy that we’ve really pushed to 120 recently. I’d love to get seven innings from him.”

I cheated a little bit and took that AP shot from yesterday’s press conference.

UPDATE, 10:49 a.m.: Here’s the Angels lineup.

Erick Aybar SS
Bobby Abreu RF
Torii Hunter CF
Hideki Matsui DH
Kendry Morales 1B
Juan Rivera RF
Howie Kendrick 2B
Jeff Mathis C
Brandon Wood 3B

RHP Ervin Santana

By the way, the Angels roster lists Kendrick’s first name as Howard. Is that a new thing? Is he going by Howard now?

It’s very cool that Jerry would fly out here on his off day to get his ring; he did a good job for us last year and I hope he has a good year out in SD with his brother.

Cash said that Bruney and Wang were invited as the Nats are in Philly and had a day off.

I believe they decided to sit it out which is fine.

  7. Andrew April 13th, 2010 at 10:43 am

JHJ did a great job off the bench for the Yankees; money & circumstances sent him to SD but I wouldn’t have minded him on the bench again for 2010. Definitely glad that he’s back today, he must be feeling pretty good since the Padres amazingly scored 17 runs, in PETCO no less, yesterday which is like a month’s worth for their offense.

Hey, quick question for anyone who saw Repo Man. Why did Jude Law get a heart transplant? Is it because he was “dead” from the faulty defibrilator?

  29. Bob in NH April 13th, 2010 at 11:09 am

To refute the notion that Curtis Granderson cannot hit lefties, I’ve heard Suzyn say at least three times during a game in the last few days how Curtis Granderson has already “hit a HR off Jon Lester”. I cannot believe no one corrects her! He had a single off Lester, his game winning HR came long after Lester was gone.

  30. Jerkface April 13th, 2010 at 11:10 am

Hey, quick question for anyone who saw Repo Man. Why did Jude Law get a heart transplant? Is it because he was “dead” from the faulty defibrilator?

The electrical shock nearly killed him, he needed a new heart. And Forrest Whitaker set it up so that he had to get a replacement to keep him in the job.

Where id Bruney, Wang, Nady, Gaudin?

    Where is Melky/Hinske?

    Where is Brett Tomko?

didn’t this offseason seem really long?

I know it was only 5 months and the yanks didn’t even make the playoffs in 2008, but maybe cuz of the horrible winter we had, the offseason seemed to be endless.

    Free Agent Racism?
By Tim Dierkes [April 13, 2010 at 9:54am CST]
Twins second baseman Orlando Hudson hinted that racism is why Jermaine Dye is out of work, reports Yahoo’s Jeff Passan. Hudson’s comments:

“You see guys like Dye without a job. Guy with [27 home runs and 81 RBIs] and can’t get a job. Pretty much sums it up right there, no? You’ve got some guys who miss a year who can come back and get $5, $6 million, and a guy like Jermaine Dye can’t get a job. A guy like Gary Sheffield, a first-ballot Hall of Famer, can’t get a job. We both know what it is. You’ll get it right. You’ll figure it out. I’m not gonna say it because then I’ll be in [trouble].”

    ___

hey Orlando. You have a job so shut up! Due WAS offered a contract and turned it down. Sheffield sucks on Defense and his attitude is a turn off. This is why he has played for half the teams in baseball.

I think what Sheets got was stupid also, but perhaps Lofton’s and Sheffield’s need to adjust their attitude and maybe teams will show interest. In Dye’s case, don’t turn down offers if you want a job.

  36. Doreen - 2010 GTLU April 13th, 2010 at 11:13 am

Aw, c’mon. Give these guys a break who decided not to come. It would have been nice, but it’s not mandatory and I can understand why someone might not want to be a part of something they’re no longer a part of.

  37. Carl April 13th, 2010 at 11:14 am

Who cares what Orlando has to say. This day is for my Yankees.

  38. Matt April 13th, 2010 at 11:15 am

Actually, Carl Crawford deserves a ring for making the game saving catch for the AL All Stars last July which ultimately gave the Yankees home field advantage throughout the postseason of 2009.
He will however have his chance as a uniformed Yankee to get rings.

  39. m April 13th, 2010 at 11:15 am

I’m really surprised that Wang’s not here. But not really.

I think most have bruised feelings (understandably) and Nady is too sexy for this kind of thing probably didn’t feel like a part of the championship team.

Love that Jerry’s making a special trip and that he makes no effort to hide his glee. He seems to be a happy guy in general, but he seems to be especially happy that he gets to play with his brother.

    Jerkface,
    Thanks.

saturday morning, (the past day after NYY lost to Tampa) Heyman was on the radio and said that Tampa was truly the better team. And he went on to say the Yankees have many question marks.

Jon Heyman is a joke. Nor do i like him as a human being. Very smug

  60. Tankus April 13th, 2010 at 11:30 am

Wang didn’t even pitch 80% of the season and didn’t participate in the playoffs. He probably feels the same way that AJ did in 03. I can understand him not wanting to come to the ring ceremony.

Bruney pitched 0.2 innings in mop-up and he was traded to a last place team. I doubt he has many warm feelings for us.

The Braves are playing in San Diego today… I doubt Hinske/Melky want to travel 12 hours before a game.

Gaudin is in Seattle and plays tonight… makes no sense for him to fly out here. Nady played 2 games. Tomko sucks.

  61. m April 13th, 2010 at 11:30 am

Sorry about that rant. It’s just that there are very few black players as it is, and sometimes when they speak it comes out wrong. They mean well, I suppose. But there are many people who are struggling, not just black baseball players.

  62. timo April 13th, 2010 at 11:31 am

On the Howie/Howard issue, I found these comments on an LA Times blog from a year ago, so I’m guessing it’s nothing new.

“Interesting that although he was drafted less than a year ago, Devaris Strange-Gordon has already had his name shortened to Devaris Gordon and then shortened further to Dee Gordon. By the time he reaches L.A. I fully expect him to be known simply as D.G.

Posted by: Eric Enders | April 14, 2009 at 03:17 PM

Along the lines of Dee Gordon, Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick is called “Howard” on MLB.com per his request.

But nobody else calls him Howard.

How sweet for Joe Girardi. Only two years as manager – and novice manager at that, seeing he only had one year with the Marlins – and he’s managed the team to a world series. And that in a year where he was without Alex, Jorge and Jose Molina for part of the season and with a bullpen that had injuries throughout the season.

His bullpen management has definitely been key, IMO.

    Good on ya Joe.

  87. MTU(aka GBURL) April 13th, 2010 at 11:43 am

I sure hope Joe G. doesn’t get really mad sometime and decide to take a bite outa someone’s neck.

    “Jaws” has nothing on Joe.

    (loose the braces Joe). :)

    I thought Marge Schott died?

  89. Erin April 13th, 2010 at 11:44 am

BryanHoch Thinking Hideki Matsui might get the loudest ovation of anyone when he walks out, in Angels red, to get his ring today.

  90. m April 13th, 2010 at 11:44 am

    stuckey,

Not saying that at all. It’s just a slap in the face to the players and descendants of those who played in the Negro league. Those players would’ve loved to play in this era. Where even a player on his last legs like Dye still had even a chance to play.

Has it been proven that there’s racial discrimination in salaries/opportunities? I don’t think so.

  91. GiambisGoldenThong April 13th, 2010 at 11:45 am

    CD,

I laughed out at my desk right there.

  92. GreenBeret7 April 13th, 2010 at 11:45 am

Note of interest. 55 years ago tomorrow, Ellie Howard played in his first major league game and had an RBI single in his only at bat… and played left field because some guy named Berra wouldn’t let him catch.

    M,

I hear what you are saying. But it’s the Japs and the money hungry Jews who are the real problem

DC, I did read that MLB.com would have the feed.

  96. blank April 13th, 2010 at 11:47 am

The loudest ovation better be for Hideki, the SB MVP!

If anyone boos him, they should be escorted out from the stadium….. if there is one person who should not be booed, it is matsui-san……

  97. stuckey April 13th, 2010 at 11:47 am

“It’s just a slap in the face to the players and descendants of those who played in the Negro league. ”

That STILL reads like the same sentiment to me. AGAIN it sounds like they should be grateful just to have the opportunity because previous generations did not.

“Has it been proven that there’s racial discrimination in salaries/opportunities? I don’t think so.”

    In baseball or in general?

  98. Jerkface April 13th, 2010 at 11:48 am

:x Barry Bonds hogged all the MVPs, why do the blacks need to have all the MVP awards? :x

  99. DC April 13th, 2010 at 11:48 am

thanks…ill watch the rings then get up in the morning to watch the game on tape

  100. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 13th, 2010 at 11:51 am

I’m still dumbfounded, to be honest; I don’t even know what to say except that I agree with Stuckey’s 11:41 post.

  101. m April 13th, 2010 at 11:51 am

Sorry, didn’t mean it that way at all. If one of my relatives was a player who was banned, my thoughts would be, “be grateful that you have this opportunity, my great-grandfather never did.”

    And I’m talking baseball.

  102. Glenn Beck April 13th, 2010 at 11:53 am

I always knew Scott Boras was secretly black, the way he always complains about money.

  103. Vermont Vet April 13th, 2010 at 11:56 am

    Stuckey,

It implies contemporary African-Americans should be grateful they now ALLOWED to play baseball.

    Wow…. just wow…
    —————————–
Contemorary African-Amerian players should be grateful – grateful to the African-American players who fought and suffered to integrate baseball. Making it better for everyone.

  104. stuckey April 13th, 2010 at 11:57 am

“Sorry, didn’t mean it that way at all. If one of my relatives was a player who was banned, my thoughts would be, “be grateful that you have this opportunity, my great-grandfather never did.”

    And I’m talking baseball.”

How did you not mean it that way at all, you just said it again directly – “grateful that THEY have this opportunity”.

Should African Americans and women be grateful they have the right to vote?

  105. tala08 April 13th, 2010 at 11:58 am

    m,

I’m not going to take this to the other post so you may not even see this but stop using the word “grateful.” Its not about being grateful.

  106. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 13th, 2010 at 12:00 pm

M, I’m sorry, but also you make it sound like all black players are angry and complaining…that’s a pretty outrageous stereotype.

  107. m April 13th, 2010 at 12:01 pm

    stuckey,

I didn’t mean it like that at all. It’s just a slap in the face to those who didn’t get to play. That’s all. Because once upon a time, sadly, that’s how it was.

Now you can continue to read it the way you want, but I felt that it’s disrespectful. Much in the way that athletes in general complain about salaries, when retired football players can’t even get medical.

  108. m April 13th, 2010 at 12:03 pm

    Betsy,

I’ve already apologized for using too broad a paintbrush.

So, I’ll keep it specific. Torii Hunter is a complainer, well, was until he got his big contract.

And Milton Bradley and Gary Sheffield are angry men.

  109. Evan April 13th, 2010 at 12:10 pm

you’d be angry too, if Tiger was hoarding all the white women.

  110. tala08 April 13th, 2010 at 12:12 pm

Its not their fault and they shouldn’t just keep their mouths shut because those before them couldn’t play, didn’t get paid as much or cant get medical. You and many others may not want to hear it but they should speak up for what they want and feel they deserve. And it doesn’t matter if outside people think they already have too much.

  111. stuckey April 13th, 2010 at 12:16 pm

    m,

As I say, you can keep saying that isn’t what you mean, but you keep expressing the same sentiment over and over again. I honestly hope that somewhere in your heart you DON’T feel people should be humbled and grateful for gaining rights they never should have been denied (which is tool to continue to oppress people), but it appears that’s exactly how you feel.

  112. Terry April 13th, 2010 at 12:32 pm

Thank goodness, Jeter is one of the good ones

  113. charlestonchew April 13th, 2010 at 2:11 pm

“If there are fewer blacks in baseball, it’s by their choice…not baseball’s. Now, can we drop the subject?”

    Greenberet

Not to push the subject any further, but there is a significantly higher start up cost to playing baseball (mitts, balls, bats, large field area, bases, need 18 people, etc).

African-Americans are historically disadvantaged economically compared to most other ethnic groups. They don’t have a choice. If someone has a basketball or a soccer ball or a football, you can more easily replicate those games than baseball.

It’s only a choice when you have the option to choose.
