Girardi: “The culmination of all the emotions”
We have the audio from Joe Girardi’s pregame media session, but first this little tidbit.
Jerry Hairston Jr. is here. The Padres have an off day, so Hairston flew to New York to get his ring. He’s been shaking a lot of hands and saying a lot of hellos.

As for Girardi, nothing has changed since yesterday, so there wasn’t much to talk about. At one point, there was complete silence in the press conference room.
Most of his discussion was about Hideki Matsui.
• Girardi said he has “matchup ideas” for Hideki Matsui, but it also “depends on where we’re at” in the game.
• “If you don’t execute your pitch, Hideki Matsui is going to hurt you,” Girardi said. “We know that.”
• Girardi said today’s ring ceremony will be “the culmination of all the emotions we had last year.”
• On Pettitte: “We’ve been pretty consistent on how many pitches we let guys go this time of the year, and Andy’s never really been a guy that we’ve really pushed to 120 recently. I’d love to get seven innings from him.”
I cheated a little bit and took that AP shot from yesterday’s press conference.

UPDATE, 10:49 a.m.: Here’s the Angels lineup.
Erick Aybar SS
Bobby Abreu RF
Torii Hunter CF
Hideki Matsui DH
Kendry Morales 1B
Juan Rivera RF
Howie Kendrick 2B
Jeff Mathis C
Brandon Wood 3B
RHP Ervin Santana
By the way, the Angels roster lists Kendrick’s first name as Howard. Is that a new thing? Is he going by Howard now?

It’s very cool that Jerry would fly out here on his off day to get his ring; he did a good job for us last year and I hope he has a good year out in SD with his brother.

Matsui news conference
Oh please, Suzyn is partially blaming the Yankees for not bringing back Damon. She’s clueless……..I just turned her off, lol.
Very cool that Hairston flew in.
I love jerhair , so glad he made it.
Cash said that Bruney and Wang were invited as the Nats are in Philly and had a day off.
I believe they decided to sit it out which is fine.
JHJ did a great job off the bench for the Yankees; money & circumstances sent him to SD but I wouldn’t have minded him on the bench again for 2010. Definitely glad that he’s back today, he must be feeling pretty good since the Padres amazingly scored 17 runs, in PETCO no less, yesterday which is like a month’s worth for their offense.
would been nice if wang showed up, oh well
I would really have liked Hairston back as well…….
Trisha
I hope you are feeling better & get well soon!
No problem if Andy can give a solid 6-7 innings. The bullpen is well rested.
Suzyn is partially to blame? Erica, now you know who to blame.
Thanks for all the links. Right now, I’m watching cars going over a bridge. Is that right?

Thanks Rishi! I love this year’s team, but I’m going to miss Godzilla.
GO JERRY HAIRSTON!!!!
gb7 thats a great link… suddenly my respect for pete’s old gameday posts has just vanished.
Yanks are 70-36-1 in all home openers.
You’re quite welcome, Tom. I read them before games…lots of info in there.
We ought to offer a WS ring to Mike scummy Scioscia, for actually beating the Red Sox in a playoff series and actually losing to us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SCIOSCIA!!!!!!
That might qualify as trash talking from Matsui……..
Thanks for the link, GB7. It’s like a history book.
Hey, quick question for anyone who saw Repo Man. Why did Jude Law get a heart transplant? Is it because he was “dead” from the faulty defibrilator?
To refute the notion that Curtis Granderson cannot hit lefties, I’ve heard Suzyn say at least three times during a game in the last few days how Curtis Granderson has already “hit a HR off Jon Lester”. I cannot believe no one corrects her! He had a single off Lester, his game winning HR came long after Lester was gone.
Hey, quick question for anyone who saw Repo Man. Why did Jude Law get a heart transplant? Is it because he was “dead” from the faulty defibrilator?
–
The electrical shock nearly killed him, he needed a new heart. And Forrest Whitaker set it up so that he had to get a replacement to keep him in the job.
You’re quite welcome, Mel. Happy to share.
lol tom
You did not actually believe Pete did all the work himself?!!!!!
WOOOOHOOOOO!!!!!
I hope we shove one of those rings right up Scioscia’s ***!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why only Hairston showing up?
Where is Jose Molina?
Where id Bruney, Wang, Nady, Gaudin?
Where is Melky/Hinske?
Where is Brett Tomko?
You telling me those guys couldn’t fly in and then fly back to their home cities for the game tonight? Only guys who have an excuse are Coke/Damon because the Tigers are playing this afternoon.
didn’t this offseason seem really long?
I know it was only 5 months and the yanks didn’t even make the playoffs in 2008, but maybe cuz of the horrible winter we had, the offseason seemed to be endless.

Free Agent Racism?
By Tim Dierkes [April 13, 2010 at 9:54am CST]
Twins second baseman Orlando Hudson hinted that racism is why Jermaine Dye is out of work, reports Yahoo’s Jeff Passan. Hudson’s comments:
“You see guys like Dye without a job. Guy with [27 home runs and 81 RBIs] and can’t get a job. Pretty much sums it up right there, no? You’ve got some guys who miss a year who can come back and get $5, $6 million, and a guy like Jermaine Dye can’t get a job. A guy like Gary Sheffield, a first-ballot Hall of Famer, can’t get a job. We both know what it is. You’ll get it right. You’ll figure it out. I’m not gonna say it because then I’ll be in [trouble].”
___
hey Orlando. You have a job so shut up! Due WAS offered a contract and turned it down. Sheffield sucks on Defense and his attitude is a turn off. This is why he has played for half the teams in baseball.
I think what Sheets got was stupid also, but perhaps Lofton’s and Sheffield’s need to adjust their attitude and maybe teams will show interest. In Dye’s case, don’t turn down offers if you want a job.
Aw, c’mon. Give these guys a break who decided not to come. It would have been nice, but it’s not mandatory and I can understand why someone might not want to be a part of something they’re no longer a part of.
Who cares what Orlando has to say. This day is for my Yankees.
Actually, Carl Crawford deserves a ring for making the game saving catch for the AL All Stars last July which ultimately gave the Yankees home field advantage throughout the postseason of 2009.
He will however have his chance as a uniformed Yankee to get rings.
I’m really surprised that Wang’s not here. But not really.
I think most have bruised feelings (understandably) and Nady
is too sexy for this kind of thingprobably didn’t feel like a part of the championship team.Love that Jerry’s making a special trip and that he makes no effort to hide his glee. He seems to be a happy guy in general, but he seems to be especially happy that he gets to play with his brother.
Jerkface,
Thanks.
I don’t think Gary Sheffield is a first ballot HOF-er. Does anyone else?
GB – Thanks for the game notes. Wish I had more time to read them, but such is life. I really wish I could watch the ring ceremony today, but work comes first.
maybe brett tomko can paint a picture of his world series ring ljust ike he painted a picture of phil hughes….
Beautiful day in the Bronx today.
Except for the clouds & old stadium in ruins… Very sad.
There’s a brass band playing Sinatra songs across from the new stadium. Good stuff.

Definitely not first ballot
Unlikeable as he is, Shef is first ballot HOFer.
I wonder if Bonds will get any votes. After all, nothing has ever been proven. Not yet, anyways.
Hairston flying in for today, really tells you how much everything meant to him, last year.
he rubbed me the right way, whenever i saw him last year. I wish him the best. And if he is ever a Yankee again, it won’t make me sad

Good luck to him!
“I don?t think Gary Sheffield is a first ballot HOF-er. Does anyone else?”
——————————————————————–
I liked Sheff, when he was with NYY. However, it isn’t an any ballot HOF’er
Posada will be in the HOF, tho
I’m really glad that Hideki is back for this ceremony. It just wouldn’t be the same without the WS MVP in attendance.
I guess I should get on the road. Enjoy the day! I’m wearing my one and only Yankees shirt today. It’s a tank top (so much for warm weather), so I have to wear a cardigan over it, but I figured I had to wear it today!!!
Let’s Go Yankees!!!
Sheffield isn’t a HOFer, nevermind a first-ballot one.
“I wonder if Bonds will get any votes.”
I heard he hasn’t officially turned in retirement papers so I’m not sure his HOF clock has started yet.
Doreen – Thanks for the link to Mike Ashmore’s column, and safe driving today.
Aww, poor Christian Garcia; he’s apologizing to the fans who rooted for him even though his heart must be breaking? Now I’m sort of depressed; I hope he makes it back, but it’s going to be a long, tough road.
Bonds has to get votes. Too good not to be in HOF.
YES Sterling is on the WFAN > . . LOVE STERLING
“Is Heyman kidding?”
—————————————————
saturday morning, (the past day after NYY lost to Tampa) Heyman was on the radio and said that Tampa was truly the better team. And he went on to say the Yankees have many question marks.
Jon Heyman is a joke. Nor do i like him as a human being. Very smug
Wang didn’t even pitch 80% of the season and didn’t participate in the playoffs. He probably feels the same way that AJ did in 03. I can understand him not wanting to come to the ring ceremony.
Bruney pitched 0.2 innings in mop-up and he was traded to a last place team. I doubt he has many warm feelings for us.
The Braves are playing in San Diego today… I doubt Hinske/Melky want to travel 12 hours before a game.
Gaudin is in Seattle and plays tonight… makes no sense for him to fly out here. Nady played 2 games. Tomko sucks.
Sorry about that rant. It’s just that there are very few black players as it is, and sometimes when they speak it comes out wrong. They mean well, I suppose. But there are many people who are struggling, not just black baseball players.
On the Howie/Howard issue, I found these comments on an LA Times blog from a year ago, so I’m guessing it’s nothing new.
“Interesting that although he was drafted less than a year ago, Devaris Strange-Gordon has already had his name shortened to Devaris Gordon and then shortened further to Dee Gordon. By the time he reaches L.A. I fully expect him to be known simply as D.G.
Posted by: Eric Enders | April 14, 2009 at 03:17 PM
Along the lines of Dee Gordon, Angels second baseman Howie Kendrick is called “Howard” on MLB.com per his request.
But nobody else calls him Howard.
Posted by: Phenomenal Smith | April 14, 2009 at 03:20 PM”
Yeah M,
Should have kept that one to yourself. Glad I use my “assume” rule when reading your post.
“I don’t want to start a big race thing here, but many of the black players in the game today seem to be an ungrateful lot”
——————————————————–
whatever, M
I don’t see it.
interesting
Ray Vt – thank you! I’m just happy I didn’t attempt to go to the game today. It definitely would not have worked.
Jon Heyman is a joke. Nor do i like him as a human being. Very smug
–
He is a rube.
That can’t be M….
Vinny, that’s weird, because Heyman had written a column in ST saying how the Yankees were clearly the best team. Did he really say Tampa was a better team? Ooook.
Stop pickin on susan

It is me. And I apologize for offending people.
But I do think that it’s hard to feel sorry for people who play sports and complain about money.
If there are fewer blacks in baseball, it’s by their choice…not baseball’s. Now, can we drop the subject?
betsy:
he said, he believed Tampa was the better team this year. Point blank
apparently, that first game in the series made quite the impression on him. He’s a clown
Apparently the Angels are so scared of our lefty bats they’re going with two right fielders!
(or Chad just forgot to put Juan as the LF)
Swisher on with Joe and Evan.
“From Mike Ashmore?s Thunder blog re: Christian Garcia:

I saw someone wishing Doreen safe driving. Where is she going?
They can complain about money. Why can’t they? Stop comparing their money to yours. Its all relative.
Vinny- b, then he’s just a moron (and I respect the Rays a lot, don’t get me wrong).
Sheffield will get to the hall, but it will take him some time like it took Jim Rice. Not the best friends of the press.
I think it’s good for the game to have more AA players to bring that demographic back into baseball. That’s why Jason Heyward is great for the Braves fans. It can only help to increase the fanbase of baseball in general
tala,
You’re right. But if it were me, I wouldn’t complain or even talk about money to the writers.
And I used too broad of a paintbrush, but years of listening to Torii Hunter talk about money and Hudson’s seemingly off-target remarks give me a certain impression.
I shouldn’t generalize, and for that I apologize.
“I respect the Rays a lot, don’t get me wrong”
——————————————————————-
I do too. They scare me more then Boston, or any other AL team.
however, one could tell Heyman was simply overreacting to the NYY loss in that first game of the Tampa series
I wonder how Heyman will react when the Yankees lose another game this year, sheesh. The guy doesn’t have the courage of his convictions – pathetic.
“They forget where they came from. Literally. Do they even realize that once upon a time black players weren’t even allowed to play in the league?”
Not going to make a big deal of it, but I can’t let this go by without noting how utterly wrong-headed this sentiment is…
It implies contemporary African-Americans should be grateful they now ALLOWED to play baseball.
Wow…. just wow…
M,
what’s worse is tiger banging all those white chicks.
How sweet for Joe Girardi. Only two years as manager – and novice manager at that, seeing he only had one year with the Marlins – and he’s managed the team to a world series. And that in a year where he was without Alex, Jorge and Jose Molina for part of the season and with a bullpen that had injuries throughout the season.
His bullpen management has definitely been key, IMO.
Good on ya Joe.
Anyone know if the ring ceremony will be broadcast on the MLB.tv feed? Im up late in Singapore and would love to catch it!
I sure hope Joe G. doesn’t get really mad sometime and decide to take a bite outa someone’s neck.
“Jaws” has nothing on Joe.
(loose the braces Joe).
I thought Marge Schott died?
BryanHoch Thinking Hideki Matsui might get the loudest ovation of anyone when he walks out, in Angels red, to get his ring today.
stuckey,
Not saying that at all. It’s just a slap in the face to the players and descendants of those who played in the Negro league. Those players would’ve loved to play in this era. Where even a player on his last legs like Dye still had even a chance to play.
Has it been proven that there’s racial discrimination in salaries/opportunities? I don’t think so.
CD,
I laughed out at my desk right there.
Note of interest. 55 years ago tomorrow, Ellie Howard played in his first major league game and had an RBI single in his only at bat… and played left field because some guy named Berra wouldn’t let him catch.
New Post- Jeter: “Season doesn’t get started until we play the home opener”
M,
I hear what you are saying. But it’s the Japs and the money hungry Jews who are the real problem
DC, I did read that MLB.com would have the feed.
The loudest ovation better be for Hideki, the SB MVP!
If anyone boos him, they should be escorted out from the stadium….. if there is one person who should not be booed, it is matsui-san……
“It’s just a slap in the face to the players and descendants of those who played in the Negro league. ”
That STILL reads like the same sentiment to me. AGAIN it sounds like they should be grateful just to have the opportunity because previous generations did not.
“Has it been proven that there’s racial discrimination in salaries/opportunities? I don’t think so.”
In baseball or in general?
thanks…ill watch the rings then get up in the morning to watch the game on tape
I’m still dumbfounded, to be honest; I don’t even know what to say except that I agree with Stuckey’s 11:41 post.
Sorry, didn’t mean it that way at all. If one of my relatives was a player who was banned, my thoughts would be, “be grateful that you have this opportunity, my great-grandfather never did.”
And I’m talking baseball.
I always knew Scott Boras was secretly black, the way he always complains about money.
Stuckey,
It implies contemporary African-Americans should be grateful they now ALLOWED to play baseball.
Wow…. just wow…
—————————–
Contemorary African-Amerian players should be grateful – grateful to the African-American players who fought and suffered to integrate baseball. Making it better for everyone.
“Sorry, didn’t mean it that way at all. If one of my relatives was a player who was banned, my thoughts would be, “be grateful that you have this opportunity, my great-grandfather never did.”
And I’m talking baseball.”
How did you not mean it that way at all, you just said it again directly – “grateful that THEY have this opportunity”.
Should African Americans and women be grateful they have the right to vote?
m,
I’m not going to take this to the other post so you may not even see this but stop using the word “grateful.” Its not about being grateful.
M, I’m sorry, but also you make it sound like all black players are angry and complaining…that’s a pretty outrageous stereotype.
stuckey,
I didn’t mean it like that at all. It’s just a slap in the face to those who didn’t get to play. That’s all. Because once upon a time, sadly, that’s how it was.
Now you can continue to read it the way you want, but I felt that it’s disrespectful. Much in the way that athletes in general complain about salaries, when retired football players can’t even get medical.
Betsy,
I’ve already apologized for using too broad a paintbrush.
So, I’ll keep it specific. Torii Hunter is a complainer, well, was until he got his big contract.
And Milton Bradley and Gary Sheffield are angry men.
you’d be angry too, if Tiger was hoarding all the white women.
Its not their fault and they shouldn’t just keep their mouths shut because those before them couldn’t play, didn’t get paid as much or cant get medical. You and many others may not want to hear it but they should speak up for what they want and feel they deserve. And it doesn’t matter if outside people think they already have too much.
m,
As I say, you can keep saying that isn’t what you mean, but you keep expressing the same sentiment over and over again. I honestly hope that somewhere in your heart you DON’T feel people should be humbled and grateful for gaining rights they never should have been denied (which is tool to continue to oppress people), but it appears that’s exactly how you feel.
Thank goodness, Jeter is one of the good ones
“If there are fewer blacks in baseball, it’s by their choice…not baseball’s. Now, can we drop the subject?”
Greenberet
Not to push the subject any further, but there is a significantly higher start up cost to playing baseball (mitts, balls, bats, large field area, bases, need 18 people, etc).
African-Americans are historically disadvantaged economically compared to most other ethnic groups. They don’t have a choice. If someone has a basketball or a soccer ball or a football, you can more easily replicate those games than baseball.
It’s only a choice when you have the option to choose.
