Hairston flies all night to get his ring

Jerry Hairston signed with the Padres during the offseason and so he assumed he’d just get his World Series ring mailed to him. Turns out, some fortunate scheduling (and a willingness to pass on some sleep) allowed him to be here at the Stadium to get it in person.

As the Yankees took batting practice earlier today, Hairston chatted with some of his former teammates, many of whom were surprised to see him since they just assumed Hairston would be playing with his new team. The Padres had a day game yesterday, though, and an off-day today, so Hairston hopped the red-eye flight last night (paying his own way) and got into New York at 6 in the morning. After a quick nap, Hairston came to the Stadium and will get his ring before heading back to the airport for the long flight back to California. Needless to say, he’s tired but he’s far from complaining.

“It’s worth it,” he said.

Take a listen to Hairston’s interview with a group of reporters below. Pretty cool to hear how excited he is about getting the ring.

I think that’s fantastic; I’m so glad Jerry made the effort to be here – I don’t think he’ll regret it. He may not be a part of the 2010 Yankees, but he was a a contributing member of the 2009 Yankees and that will never change.

He won’t regret it. I can understand why some of the other players couldn’t or chose to be here for it. But if I missed the ceremony by choice, it’s something I might regret later.

Maybe Alex flew to the stadium, too? :P

I think it’s so cool he flew in for this!

Good for Hairston. I heard him do a bunch of interviews last yr after he was traded and he seemed like a good dude.

?m happy Jerry Hairston Jr. is going to be here to get his. Every single Yankee player played some part in their getting to and winning the world series.

I hope all this good Karma results in a Yankee win today.

Beating the Angels is almost as good as beating the Sox.

Giving Torii Hunter another dose of humble pie is always a plus.

And Watching Sciosa go into spasms and start whining is priceless. :)

    Pat and Betsy

I apologize. I wasn’t telling anybody to give him the loudest ovation. I will tell everyone that they should love Hideki eternally, like Jeter, or Mariano, or Pettitte, or Posada.

But, my opinion re: SUI!! is that he singlehandedly won us Game 6 of the WS. We were getting cheated by the HP umpire all game long, even in the Alex AB prior to Hideki’s 2 out 2 run single to put us up 4-1. Without that hit, we may not win the game.

Hairston’s no fool. He probably realizes that he may not get another ring. Better enjoy his one shot.

I’m a Yankee transplant in LA and cannot watch today’s game at work thanks to MLB.TV’s blackout restrictions (Angels). Does anyone know where I can find the game online? channelsurfing.net and justin.tv don’t seem to have any links for the game today. Thanks!

    I’m very impressed by Hairston.

Ledger_Yankees A bit overcast here as they ready the field for the ring ceremony.

  14. pat April 13th, 2010 at 12:15 pm

Hairston waited a looooong time for the opportunity and glad to see him embrace it.

Someone tap me on the shoulder when Pettitte throws the first pitch. I’m more interested in 28 than I am 27.

I just want to see what the rings look like

Hairston should call Hinske if he wants to win another ring.

Hinske knows how to win rings as a sub. ;)

Have to really like a guy like Hairston who loves to play the game. He is like a kid in the candy store about getting this ring.

“Someone tap me on the shoulder when Pettitte throws the first pitch. I’m more interested in 28 than I am 27.”

What, you don’t like pomp and circumstance? :)

What a story!! What a day!!!!

The husband was at his 27th straight opening day at YS, and the wife was at her 21st straight….and they met 21 years ago at YS opening day!!!!!!!

There was a guy who’d been to 52 straight opening day games!! Now there is a true fan!!!!!!!!!!!!

Per 1050 – There was allegedly a suicide outside the Angels team hotel.

Hairston is the living embodiment of the Swiss Army Knife. :)

I’m excited to see Sui. Otherwise I know what you mean about the ring ceremony. Even with opening day, I wish we could bypass the season and just get to the postseason! When I used to post on the NY Times forum there were fans from other teams there. One Mets fan in particular use to get furious when I referred to the season as Yankee batting practice for the postseason.

    :)

“What, you don’t like pomp and circumstance? :)

Pomp is intolerable, circumstance is okay… :-)

Yeah, don’t have a lot of use for the ceremonies. I want to see baseball.

  28. CR9 April 13th, 2010 at 12:26 pm

Did they already present the ring to Georgie?

Or do we get to see it?

I hope we get to see Georgie!!!!

  29. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 13th, 2010 at 12:27 pm

Ugh, I only taped YES from 11:30 to 1pm and so now it appears as if I will miss much of the ring ceremony.

    Going nuts for Matsui!

    Group hug.

  32. Tom April 13th, 2010 at 12:51 pm

Hairston is a standup guy , there isnt to many players that would do that , I think think the Yankees should of waited for the ring ceremony until they play Boston and rub it in a little !

  33. Pags&Rags April 13th, 2010 at 2:42 pm

I was sorry to see Hairston let go. He was always a tough out when he played against us in Baltimore and he’s a good veteran to have coming off the bench. Maybe we’ll reacquire him from SD in July.

I started taping @ 1. It started with the flag in CF, so I think you probably got it.

Hairston is a good guy, well deserved!

  37. Davey55 April 14th, 2010 at 11:31 am

I am so glad that someone reported on Hairston red-eying it to be at the game. Almost no one else did. Thanks for going beyond the routine. Gozzia deserved the big welcome, but Hairston understood the importance of the moment, perhaps the only chance he will ever get.
