Lineup for the home opener
No surprises in today’s lineup. It’s the same as the season opener, with Andy Pettitte on the mound.
There is a 20 percent chance of rain this afternoon. The sky is cloudy, but not menacing, and the wind is actually blowing in — not out — from center field.
Derek Jeter SS
Nick Johnson DH
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Jorge Posada C
Curtis Granderson CF
Nick Swisher RF
Brett Gardner LF
LHP Andy Pettitte

Can’t wait to listen via mlb.com, here in Italy.
Via Pete Caldera:
Long-time head athletic trainer Gene Monahan, battling an undisclosed illness, will be part of today’s ceremonies. “We’re all thrilled he’s going to be here,” Girardi said of the Hackensack resident. …
Hes battling cancer.
Let’s respect the man’s privacy.
I win!!!
Mo said it in the post
Then I guess even Mo isn’t infallible.

Thank you all for playing!
Chad,
I watched Nady play yesterday, at this point he looks better the Wynn or Thames. But then Cash knows much more then I do.
Pettitte also.
Erica, I admit I got a kick out of last night; days off (or when day games have been played) are kind of relaxing……..
GB may be toast, but we’re the ones getting “burnt” by his “stale” sense of humor.
Wednesday and Thursday is supposed to be warmer and dry. Not so good from Friday through Sunday, though.
Did Monument Park look different in that aerial shot or am I crazy?
“I watched Nady play yesterday, at this point he looks better the Wynn or Thames. But then Cash knows much more then I do.”
Cash made an offer to Nady. Maybe he should have offered more, but he certainly wanted him over Thames or Winn.
Actually, Sunday looks “ok”, but unfortunately ’tis true: Friday and Saturday look like garbage. Isn’t that always how it works with the Yankees?
Any released photos of the ring yet?
After 5 games we’re now judging Nady to be better? I have zero respect for him or Boras; they demanded more from the Yankees than they did from the Cubs. I find that hilarious; when Nady is sitting at home during the post-season, then maybe he’ll wonder about that decision.
I agree last night’s thread was a great morning read!
(I hate to admit that I fell asleep before 9 last night. I stayed up the night before to catch the game on replay.)
Paul B., you’ve decided that Nady is having a better season because Winn has 2 at bats? Great observation. When Nady can play a comparable outfield, let me know.
Betsy
If healthy, Nady is better.
Trevor, they’re not going to release it before the rings are handed out.
I watched the Red Sox game yesterday.Didn’t the Red Sox got Scutero because of his defense…?That guy sucks. And Big Puppy is there cleanup hitter? No way there a better team than the Rays
Doreen, I think that they shifted things around in Monument Park.
GB7 -
It did look like that. After all the complaints, I’m surprised we didn’t read anything about any changes.
Rich, whether or not that’s true, that’s not the point. I’m still bothered that Nady of demanded more from the Yankees than the Cubs (of all teams). What, did he blame them for his needing a 2nd TJ surgery?
Also, it’s been 6 games; we know you don’t like either Thames or Winn, but I am willing to give them more just a tad more leeway. Nady is no great shakes.
Doreen, I read it somewhere, but, can’t remember where. I’ll try and find it.
Betsy
That’s fair.
You know, these lineups keep getting earlier and earlier….
Pretty soon I’m gonna have to start GTLU for day games at about 2 a.m.!
My comment was in response to Betsy’s first post on Nady.
Doreen, here’s a view of Monument Park last year. I’m still looking for a new one and it’s changes

Just put Nady in your X-file and forget about him.
Interesting article in nydailynews about the Torre haters. However, I am not one of them and would actually thank him for all he did if I ever met him. We know Joe rubbed some important people the wrong way. Joe wasn’t an X’s and O’s manager according to Michael Kay. Hey, it worked for a while. Joe Torre called Michael Kay Rona Barrett ! Hilarious – He knew Kay has absolutely No Talent ! How did he rise to such prominence on the YES network? Its not his voice. We are stuck with this terrible play by play voice for a while. Dwayne Staats was better than Michael Kay !

I love threads like that!
A little sad I miss it, but a pleasant way to start the morning
Doreen
I just started following YankeesPR on Twitter yesterday but they seem to be the first one who posted it today.
You may want to add them to yours if you don’t follow them already.
Thanks, GB7.
Kay makes the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard sound like an Opera.
Are Pat and pat different people?
KenDavidoff Note on #Yankees players’ seats: “Please be in dugout by 12:25 for ring ceremony.”
“Are Pat and pat different people?”
Yes.
Kay nauseates me, but he has been one of the few NY media people that wasn’t in the tank for Torre, and actually spoke about his growing negatives.
Thanks, pat.
I think so, Rich…….thank goodness Pat M. the “M” otherwise my head would spin. I remember a few weeks ago another Betsy posted – that was weird.
I watched Nady play yesterday, at this point he looks better the Wynn or Thames. But then Cash knows much more then I do.
–
Nady needed a cut off man to enter deep right field to cut off his throw because he cannot throw. Risk.
pat -
I do follow them. Lohud had the first lineup posting today, though, but as a link to this post.
I am convinced that there is a contest among the blog guys to see who can be the first to post the lineup each day! One day Mark Feinsand actually took a photo of the lineup and posted it on Twitter.
If we had a Sybil, or an Eve posting we would be in real trouble figuring out which one was posting.
So a couple of Pats is easy compared with that.
I guess I should start getting ready to leave…

LOL. That’s hilarious. It must have something to do with not wanting to be “scooped”

Rosanna Scott is such an idiot. Why is she there? She has NO CLUE about who any individual Yankee is. Maybe, Derek Jeter.
Cervelli was just on screen and she didn’t know who he was.
She only knows ARod and Jeter. Sheesh.
“Rosanna Scott is such an idiot”
Seconded. It’s a complete mystery to me why she’s on TV.
Scotto. Rosanna Scotto. Not Scott.
Rich in NJ -
And she’s been on tv for, like, forever. Oh, well.
I didn’t know Cervelli real name was Tony Pena.
Doreen
She should know Cisco. He’s a Paisan.
Hey gang. Just dropping in to say GO YANKEES! I’m fighting a very bad chest cold but have no fever so I’m also fighting going to the doctor.
I think lots of liquids and aspirin (plus something to help supress the cough) is about the best you can do.
For anyone going to the game, enjoy.
Yankees are dancing on the field.
I usually watch their show while I’m at the gym. I like Greg Kelly. He’s a real weisenheimer.
Cervelli was looking pretty buff in that shot I must say.

I’m sorry I missed that.
Frankie Cervelli a.k.a. “The Cisco Kid”
Erin -
He DID look really good.
Well, now I really have to start getting ready…
Did anybody hear John Flaherty this morning on WFAN? He said that Joba is a thrower, not a pitcher. Joba has his 2 pitches and just wants to throw and not think aboaut it. That’s why, according to Flaherty, Joba belongs in the pen.
John also likes Hughes as the 5th starter.
KenDavidoff Would Matsui get a curtain call if he homered today? Another #Angel in the Bronx (Reggie, of course) pulled that off in ’82.

Oh cmon she doesnt even know who Mo is? Blasphemous.
I’d prefer to see Pettite toss 7 or 8 shutout innings over Matsui hitting a home run.
NYPost_Kernan #Yankees stretching on field as giant American Flag is unfurled in pregame run through. Girardi said he’d love to get 7 innings out of Andy

Me too.
7 innings is asking a lot; the pen is well-rested – I’m not sure why Joe wants to push Andy so far.
Fran, I missed it; was he on with Boomer and Carton? Ick.
NYY626 -
She was covering the parade last fall, and no, I don’t think she knew Mo.
BloggingBombers Worlds Series? Really? http://tweetphoto.com/18283994
Joba does not only have 2 pitches ;maybe Flaherty meant that he only wants to throw 2 of them?
The ovations I’m most looking forward to (in descending order):
1) The Captain: He’s one of the best all around players ever, and we tend to take him for granted. I relish every opportunity for the fans to show him how much we appreciate what he means to the team.
2) Rivera: Same as above.
3) A-Rod: Let’s admit, we were very not nice to him his first few years here. After his heroic post-season, there’s nothing more we can demand of him. He’s a truly special player who’s worked hard to improve his image and to constantly improve his game. He deserves a raucous ovation.
4) Matsui: He was on the team for seven years, and I don’t remember any player, coach, manager or journalist ever complaining about him. He is the king of class and was always a great team player. And, of course, he won the World Series for us. I hope the Bronx shakes when his name is announced.
5) Granderson: He deserves a warm welcome to his new home. He’s the MVP of the first 6 games of the season, and may very well turn out to be the next in the long line of great Yankees centerfielders.

That person needs to be fired immediately?

He’s entitled to his opinion even if it is wrong.
Joba has always been a starter.
He has four pitches and not 2.
I guess he completed his digital mind reading certification as well so he knows what Joba is thinking.
Glad he is talking head and not a decision maker.
No reason that Pettitte couldn’t go 7 innings today if he pitches the same game he pitches in Fenway. 94 pitches in 6 innings. Pettitte’s catching a break. He’s a notorious “mudder”. Rainy weather doesn’t affect him.

Any manager wants his pitcher to go atleast 7 innings. Its not pushing anyone. Its not like Joe is going to leave him out there with 130 pitches.
Really they should be expected to go 9, but what ya gonna do modern game
Suzyn on with Joe and Evan in a few minutes…
Hey Betsy,
Flaherty was on with Boomer and Carton. I had to take my car in for service and the radio in the dealership was on WFAN so I heard the interview.
Sewage Man-great list! Completely agree with all 5

Contrary to what Randy and others say, I had nothing to do with printing that sign.
Sewage Man -
I would include Andy on your list – he won every clincher last season.
(I am getting ready to go, just taking my time…)
Doreen –
I’m jealous – I wish I could go! I live far away , so it’s not really feasible (not that I can afford tickets anyway…).
Anyway, I agree with you – go cheer your heart out for Andy and the rest of them!!

Former yankee and current padre jerry hairston jr took red-eye from san diego and is flying back at 6 pm: “it’s all worth it, trust me.”
BloggingBombers
Padres are off, so Jerry Hairston took a red-eye from SD to attend the ring ceremony. “I don’t know how many chances I’m going to get.”
How COOL is that???????
MTU,
Since Flaherty is a catcher I would have thought that he would be more knowledgable about pitchers and their repertoires. But he does work for YES now, so maybe he speaks the “company line”.
That’s so cool about Hairston. I hope he gets a nice cheer.
Sewage Man -
I WISH I was getting ready to go to the game!! I am getting ready to go to LI and then White Plains and then back to NJ. Long, long day of mostly driving.
Sigh.
Aww, that’s so nice that Jerry would do that……darn, I wish I could be at home to watch this life. Oh well – it will have to suffice on tape. I wonder if Bruney is so ticked off that he just decided not to attend.
Betsy,
You may be right about Joba throwing 2 vs. only having 2 pitches. I have to listen again on line.
If you want to talk about lucky.
How about Eric Hinske.
Hairston could learn a thing or two about timing from him.
I think we need to give Flaherty the benefit of the doubt; he’s not a dummy. He has to have meant that Joba has special feelings for his FB and slider and just prefers to throw them.
That’s cool that Hairston’s there.
Fran-
“Since Flaherty is a catcher I would have thought that he would be more knowledgable about pitchers and their repertoires. But he does work for YES now, so maybe he speaks the “company line”.”
Not saying he doesn’t know his stuff in general.
I have enjoyed his commentary.
That might be his honest evaluation.
I just think parts of it were incorrect, or questionable.

Matsui news conference

Nice of hairston to be there. Really wish Wang was there. Would be interesting to hear the reception he would get.
How about this line-up against Kazmir tomorrow?
Jeter, ss
Winn, lf
Tex, 1b
A-Rod, 3b
Cano, 2b
Posada, c
Thames, dh
Swisher, rf
Granderson, cf
Would you prvide us Angel’s lineup earlier?
Trisha
I hope you are feeling better & get well soon!
So I guess Damon gets his ring mailed lol?
I think Girardi should give Winn a shot tomorrow.
Am I the only person who loves Michael Kay? I think hes great. Even bought his autographed ball off of Ebay. (It was cheap.) I just wish he would talk more about the Yankees on his radio show. Seems like he uses that show to talk about everything else…
I went to college with Rosanna Scotto. She was really dumb back then!
Thanks to all of you, I am super excited about the game today. I have followed this blog daily since December, and I can never remember caring THIS MUCH about Opening Day. Unfortunately. I will not be home for most of the game. I am in the West for a couple more weeks, and I have an important appointment this morning. I hope to catch the end of the game and hopefully the Ring Ceremony was DVR’d for me when I return to NY in May. Because the Yanks are a ‘national’ team most of the games have been televised.
In any case, GO YANKEES! I am counting on all of you to root hard so that when I do get home the Yankees are well ahead!!!
Also, Doreen, would it be possible for us to post our GTLU choices late the night before? I know that is not part of the rules.
Anyone know if the ring ceremony will be broadcast on the MLB.tv feed? Im up late in Singapore and would love to catch it!
