Yankees win home opener

It was just like old times at Yankee Stadium this afternoon. Andy Pettitte pitched six shutout innings, Derek Jeter went deep, Jorge Posada doubled twice, Mariano Rivera got the save and Hideki Matsui was back in town as the Yankees won their home opener 7-5.

I won’t say this very often this year :) , but congratulations on the Yankees win today.

I don’t mind seeing you guys win on the day you receive your rings, and Pettite is a good guy.

wow does Robertson suck. I?ll let Betsey do the ragging.

Whining about crowd noise she heard over a radio? Some things never change. Guess she owes at least 5 people an apology who tried to shut her down but she knew better. Until she didn?t.

  20. GreenBeret7 April 13th, 2010 at 4:37 pm

Hats off to the offense and Andy Pettitte for a very veteran performane, again. He should be 2-0 this year. 230 career wins and 193 as a Yankee.

You are most welcome Carl, Nick, and GB.

GB, things would be much in the sox fan family if that flea bitten dog “killer” quit mooching off us. I think “yaz” has converted “killer” into a sox fan!!!

I’m looking forward to see how Hughes does I believe in a couple days right?

Bucholtz was a little shaky the other day, but as we all know it is very early in the season.

Checking in from work: unfortunately, I didn’t get to see the game. :( Just kept abreast of the score all day. I will say, seeing Matsui in red just looks WRONG!

Also, this just in: CC Sabathia is the mark of the beast incarnated! From Yahoo Sports:

RHP Tim Lincecum has struck out 10 or more batters in a game 20 times in his career, the most in the majors in over the past four seasons. His record in those games is 12-1 with a 1.22 ERA. He leads the majors with 693 K’s since the start of the 2007 season. Next closest: CC Sabathia (666) and Javier Vazquez (656).

Good win for the Yanks this afternoon.

  49. Rob B (Officially on the Jeter for MVP bandwagon) April 13th, 2010 at 5:04 pm

That would be pretty cool to have the 3 biggest K guys over the last 4 seasons all be Yankees at the same time. For now, we’ll have to settle for 2 out of 3.

  50. Erin April 13th, 2010 at 5:04 pm

Ledger_Yankees As a surprise for his 4 year old daughter in the stands, Nick Johnson made his walk up music Party in the USA. She loves the song.

Oops, just realized I still had “Jeter for MVP” still on my Name at work. I think this is the first time I’ve posted from my work computer since before the regular season ended last year. That means I’ve actually been working! What have I been thinking!?!?!?!

  52. Wave Your Hat April 13th, 2010 at 5:06 pm

It’s good to win, but the game was frustrating with all the runners LOB. Should have scored another 5 runs.

Pettitte was awesome. Jorge rocks, gotta love NJ, great Swisher catch. Robertson wasn’t as bad as his box score will make him look. Cano didn’t do anything to help the RISP/non-RISP debate.

  53. trisha - OPPC member who sees, hears, and knows all. 28 is on its way!!!!! April 13th, 2010 at 5:06 pm

Great Opening Game and beautiful ring ceremony. I was really happy to see Hideki get his due. It was also awesome to see the crowd embrace Curtis. If you ever doubted the appreciation of Yankee fans, all you have to do is watch the rewind of the opening ceremonies, unless you already watched it, and then you know exactly what I’m talking about. Watching Gene Monahan was particularly emotional. I sure hope he’s okay.

Andy just gets better as time goes on. I hope he considers another season after this one! Never expected to see Mo in the game, but then there was something appropriate about having him in there.

matt, there was definitely distance when Robertson came in. I’m not sure he would be in with much less of a lead. But it all worked out. Girardi won the world series last year. I’m sure he knows how to manage. In addition, he knows how to make changes when he feels they’re necessary.

    It’s all good.

    :)

  54. m April 13th, 2010 at 5:09 pm

Historically speaking the Yankees have usually been a slow-starting team.

I like the fast start, and hope they keep rolling.

  55. Coach6423 April 13th, 2010 at 5:10 pm

I know you are a troll matt, but a seeing eye grounder to the hole, a lame bunt, a fister into the corner loaded the bases. He made 1 bad pitch in the inning, the HR to Abreu. Bad luck loaded the bases, a bad pitch emptied them.

  75. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 13th, 2010 at 5:38 pm

I was on my way to the dentist when I heard Jorge being interviewed; whew – I left my house just as Mo was in the middle of facing Hunter. That was closer than I liked. This team is awfully good and very complete; the pen is more erratic than I’d like, though.

  76. MTU(aka GBURL) April 13th, 2010 at 5:42 pm

Since Tex is such a slow starter, and we have so many power hitting options would it be a terrible idea to move Tex down in the order until he starts hitting the breaking stuff better ?

For example, we could move Grandy or Swisher to #3 just until Tex shows more signs of life at the plate.

(I know they would probably never do it.)

    Opinions welcome.

  77. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 13th, 2010 at 5:43 pm

Ray, you’re incredibly classy…Yes, Phil goes Thursday.

What an emotional day; I didn’t know Geno was THAT sick – my prayers are with him. LOL I don’t blame Alex for feeling that way, but that ring is heavy; it might weigh him down at 3rd base

Great ceremony. Yankee fans did themselves proud, particularly with the big ovations for Monahan and Matsui. The only thing I didn’t like was the loud music during the introductions. I’d just rather hear the fans.

    ——————————————————————-

    Robertson will be fine.

  83. SJ44 April 13th, 2010 at 5:47 pm

You don’t move Tex. We went thru this last year. You ride it out because you know he’s going to hit.

Move him down and he gets fewer pitches to hit.

Just look at the back of his baseball card and don’t worry about him.

  84. MTU(aka GBURL) April 13th, 2010 at 5:48 pm

Sorry. Case of the GB’s on that “Jeter” post.

  85. Patrick April 13th, 2010 at 5:50 pm

Haha when will people learn that sometimes players go through bad streaks? Tex is a great hitter, keep him where he is.

  86. MTU(aka GBURL) April 13th, 2010 at 5:51 pm

    SJ44-

I thought about the fewer pitches lower down in the order.

And I know he is great hitter and will work thru it.

It’s just a little painful to watch right now.

I did know the subject had been discussed previously.

  87. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 13th, 2010 at 5:51 pm

Ray, yes – I’m already nervous, lol.

I didn’t see Robertson, but it doesn’t sound pretty. I was fine with Park giving up a HR in a 5-1 game because I’d rather that than issue a walk. The pen has been somewhat erratic………Did Joba pitch today?

  88. MTU(aka GBURL) April 13th, 2010 at 5:52 pm

Meant to say “did not know”

  89. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 13th, 2010 at 5:52 pm

Oh, and I completely agree about leaving Tex where he is. We need to show faith in the guy even though it’s frustrating.

  90. Rishi April 13th, 2010 at 5:52 pm

    8 minutes ago via TweetDeck

  91. SJ44 April 13th, 2010 at 5:53 pm

They are 5-2 and playing great baseball. There is nothing painful about this team. I don’t lose any sleep over Tex. He will be fine.

  92. pat April 13th, 2010 at 5:54 pm

Tex not hitting last year was worse because they weren’t winning.

This year so far they are winning so they can better ride it out and wait for him to get hot.

  93. MTU(aka GBURL) April 13th, 2010 at 5:57 pm

    SJ44-

    I agree.

    They are playing great.

But that doesn’t change the fact that Tex looks a little lost at the plate right now.

And I also agree that it’s nothing to worry about.

I hope I didn’t give the impression that I’m worried about him longer term because I’m not.

And I’m not even in slightest worried about the team.

    They’re gonna be a Juggernaut.

  94. pat April 13th, 2010 at 5:58 pm

The ring on the hand is not as obnoxiously big as I thought it would be.

    http://www.daylife.com/photo/0.....?q=yankees

  95. ray (sox fan) April 13th, 2010 at 5:58 pm

I would love to have the “problem” of a slow starting Tex in the Sox lineup! :)

  96. SJ44 April 13th, 2010 at 5:59 pm

Every player goes thru these periods over the course of the season. You just ride them out with guys like Tex.

You don’t mess around with the batting order.

  97. Jerkface April 13th, 2010 at 5:59 pm

The ring on the hand is not as obnoxiously big as I thought it would be.

A-rod’s hand is 5 times the size of a normal hand. Seriously that ring would look ridiculous on a normal human.

  98. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 13th, 2010 at 6:00 pm

I love how the ring has “tradition” and “unity” on it; the latter is so appropriate. I know what people say about chemistry being meaningless, and that’s true if you’re an untalented team, but with a good team, I think it helps – and this team clearly cares about each other a great deal. I have an enormous amount of affection for these guys

  99. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 13th, 2010 at 6:02 pm

If Tex’s slump happened in mid-May, no one would be talking about it. It seems worse than it is because it’s the beginning of the season and everyone’s paying attention. Other people are picking him up, so that will ease the pressure on him.

The defense looks much improved, patly from health, partly from weight loss in right and partly from relative youth in left.

Betsy, in your heart of hearts, do you hope the Yankees win tomorrow and Hughes is going for the sweep on Thursday? :-)

  102. MTU(aka GBURL) April 13th, 2010 at 6:03 pm

    OK.

    My question has been answered.

It’s a bad idea to consider moving Tex in the lineup.

    Moving on. Thanks.

Betsy: Thats because your average changes so much in the beginning of the season. Its easy to say a guy is batting .100. lots of guys go 1 for 10 during the season, but rarely does it show up as a .100 batting average.

The important thing is that he has hit the ball hard several times, his timing is a bit off, but his eye is fine and he is taking his walks.

I’m not worried about this offense. They have been beastly so far.

Manny Banuelos was apparently placed on the DL, but there is still no confirmation as to why. Patrick from Pinstripes Plus hasn’t provided any info since the night he advised that it appears Manny had an apendectomy.

Stuckey, aren’t we all rooting for that :) ?

I just want him to pitch well to hold the wolves at bay, the wolves that will start howling that he’s a bust if he has the nerve to be human.

    http://www.myyesnetwork.com/12.....speechless

The Boss was the first one to receive it, but it came with a request by the captain.

“Take the Ohio State ring off,” Jeter told the Boss. Jeter grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan, received a scholarship to play baseball at the University of Michigan, where he attended school in 1992, and remains a fan, which in the world of college sports rivalries has no tolerance for anything associated with the hated Buckeyes.

“That’s the thing that I take the most out of from Opening Day, is going up there and getting the opportunity to go up there and present him with his ring because none of us would be here, this stadium wouldn’t be here without the Boss,” Jeter said.

“He was almost speechless,” said Hal Steinbrenner. “Jeter is good at breaking the ice in situations like that and that’s where he threw in the Ohio State ring deal. My dad looked right at him, pointed at him and said, ‘Michigan.’ Other than that he was just about speechless which is what we expected. It was a good moment.”

    **Jeter’s the best, lol.

“I would love to have the “problem” of a slow starting Tex in the Sox lineup!”

Just the Luchino of the draw, it’s our problem.

    Betsy,

    Betsy-

“I just want him to pitch well to hold the wolves at bay, the wolves that will start howling that he’s a bust if he has the nerve to be human.”

There is nothing you can do about that.

Phil is gonna have some great games.

    Some in between.

    And some stinkers.

That would be a reasonable expectation.

Not that he’s gonna pitch to 2.00 ERA or something.

Anyone who thinks he’s gonna do that is crazy. ;)

Teixeira is a proven slow starter. In fact, over his career his wOBA trends upward each month.

    Here are his career splits

Mar/April: .335 (dead average for MLB, very bad for a 1B)
    May: .390
    June: .390
    July: .382
    August: .411
    Sept/Oct: 418

And his wRC+ (think of as a more accurate OPS+)
    Mar/Apr: 101
    May: 139
    June: 138
    July: 133
    August: 153
    Sep/Oct: 157

It’s not a matter of not having faith in Texiera, it’s a matter of him taking a longer time than most players to get acclimated to professional pitching. But once the season gets underway, WATCH OUT! So in that regard, I would have no problem dropping him in the order, and I think that it would be beneficial to have him bat 6th or 7th in the lineup for the first month of the season. It’s just that it would cause a fan and media s#itshtorm.
