Pineiro shuts down the Yankees

Posted by: Chad Jennings - Posted in Misc on Apr 14, 2010 Print This Post Print This Post | Email This Post Email This Post

What can you say? Joel Pineiro was simply too good today. He got 21 outs: 11 on the ground, seven on strikes and only three in the air. One of the three was a foul popup to third. Aside from Nick Swisher’s RBI triple, the Yankees had no chance against him, and he didn’t hurt himself either. Zero walks for the Angels starter in a 5-3 Yankees loss.

Not going to win them all. Still a chance to win the series with wunderkind Phil Hughes.

Some disgraceful at bats late in this game.

3-1 on Teixeira, the guy has come nowhere close, and A-Rod on deck and you go after a fastball up and away that you can’t do much with and bail him out.

Cano, 2-1 count and you chase a fastball off the plate. Bad break that it was at Wood, but bad at bat to swing at that in the first place.

Posada hacking away at down and in sliders in the dirt, as usual. The only one in the world who didn’t seem to realize that pitch was coming was Posada.

Ninth inning here, Granderson in a 2-1 count gets a belt high 92 mph fastball and pops it up weakly to 3rd. Seriously, what are you looking for in that count with a 2-run deficit? Do you really think he’s going to throw you a change up and risk falling behind 3-1?

Swisher hacking at the first pitch after Rodney falls behind 2-1, brilliant.

5 terrible at bats in a row, most of which came with the pitcher behind in the count. A little patience goes a long way when the pitcher is on the verge of implosion, and you deserve to lose if you are going to keep bailing them out.

Regardless of what Pineiro did, given the counts and situations that arose in the late innings, it’s a pretty big failure to not have threatened more than they did and come far closer to winning this game.

    That post should read

HP umpire shuts down the Yankees.

Too many ABs changed again in this game. The most recent being the Teixeira AB, instead of being 3-1, he should have already been standing on 1st base, as none of those pitches were strikes.

Dont know why Teix swung 3-1, but he shouldnt have had the opportunity to swing, shouldve already been on 1st base.

Let’s tamp down on the expectations for Phil tomorrow. Expecting him to pitch great is asking a LOT; I hope he’s solid, but given that he’s been itching for this chance for a long time, he’s going to be completely amped up. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s wild tomorrow.

    “This team is a disgrace”

    The umpires are a disgrace.

Watching the Sox game, Lackey tried painting the outside corner all game, most of the time, according to Amica, he was 2 feet outside, with most of the pitches called strikes.

Then, in the 7th inning, the HP umpire decided to call it fairly, and Remy was complaining that the pitch 2 feet outside was called a strike all game long….

Like that makes it fair, RemDawg.

  25. Nick in SF April 14th, 2010 at 4:29 pm

I’d love to see Phil go 6 innings and keep it to 3 runs, but even 4 runs would have to be considered an acceptable first game for him against a decent veteran lineup.

Though, more importantly, if he just trusts his stuff and has command of his pitches, the outcome of 1 game won’t mean a heck of a lot.

  29. Chuck58 April 14th, 2010 at 4:30 pm

  32. NYYROC April 14th, 2010 at 4:31 pm

It’ll be interesting to see what Joe does with the lineup tomorrow. Will Jorge catch 3 days in a row? If he does, will he catch 4? If not that means Cisco will be catching CC again (don’t want to get into that “personal catcher” habit again). With LHP Kazmir going, will GGBG play or will Thames attempt to cover the vast YS LF? Maybe Thames DH’s or Grandy gets the day off, as Joe hinted he might do some time.

  33. Jeter's Edge April 14th, 2010 at 4:31 pm

Yeah good luck to Phil tomorrow. I hope he can go 6 innings with 2-3 runs max. We can win that. Would love to see him get 14-15 wins this season.

CR, you can’t keep blaming the umpires every time the Yankees lose. They didn’t play a good game today; it happens.

I guess from what I read that Marte looked good and that’s encouraging.

SJ, I’m not worried- I’m not – but the pen hasn’t looked so great. Are you surprised? When would you start to “worry”? Aceves gave up 1 run to add to the Angels lead and Joba did the same in Boston. I’m not concerned about our offense one bit, even Tex (though it is very frustrating).

  48. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 14th, 2010 at 4:34 pm

BD, I think if Phil is wild, we can understand it as this start, though it’s just 1, represents a lot to him. I think he understands that NOW is his time and that he’s got to grab the bull by the horns. I don’t mean by saying that that he has to pitch great this year with a 3.7 ERA, but there are expectations on him – there always have been – and now he needs to start living up to them.

Bronx Born, I?m with you. I went to last year?s opener and watched Cleveland paste the Yankees (I believe they had 11 runs when I had to leave to catch my train ? the game went on forever). But I never lamented spending the money, nor was I terribly frustrated. It?s a game. I knew the Yankees had a very special team. I knew they would more than make up for it during the season. As you say, it was the joy of watching baseball, the beauty of rooting for the team I love.

We?re not necessarily in the majority here, I don?t believe, but there are definitely some others who feel the same as we do.

  53. Yanks 22 April 14th, 2010 at 4:35 pm

Angels are 2-6 and lost 2 home series to the Twins and A’s, yet they will probably come in here and win the series from us in our building

  54. Matt April 14th, 2010 at 4:35 pm

Explain how the other pitcher did a good job. Jepsen was behind 3-1 and 2-1 on consecutive hitters with the tying run on base and hitters swung at balls to bail him out. Pineiro did a good job. Jepsen was on the verge of implosion every batter and Yankees hitters bailed him out.

In your fairy tale world nobody can ever screw up if they are a Yankee. If the guy drops a routine ground ball it’s because he’s “unlucky” and the other hitter “put a good swing on it,” never because he botched a play. The pitching gave up a lot of two out runs today that really hurt them, but the offense also had a huge chance to come back late in the game and blew it by being overaggressive against a pitcher who was missing all over the place.

The Angels won, but the game would have been a lot closer or possibly gone the other way if the Yankees were more disciplined.

I never consider any Yankee AB “an embarrassment”. The only thing I consider an embarrassment is the spoiled fans who expect perfection from the players at all times yet don’t expect the same of themselves and are certainly a hell of a lot more understanding when they themselves don’t make the grade.

P.S. Amount of salary has nothing to do with the fact that players are human, and as such, subject to imperfection.

P.P.S. I doubt that any major league players go up to bats with the intention of failing. As long as they are doing their best, we should applaud the effort.

Matt, you are a baseball moron. Everybody on this blog knows it. We lived through the hysterics last year and have no interest in doing so this year.

Pineiro pitched great today and he was the story of the game.

The only AB Jepson looked good in was the AB to Posada. He pitched him tough and got the K.

Cano SMOKED a ball right at Wood. That’s not bad offense. That’s bad luck.

At some point, you have to stop the hysterics and learn a little about the game or everybody on here is just going to laugh and make fun of you because you make no sense after losses.

    Thames career vs. Kazmir

    5-15 (.333), 1 double, 1 HR

He’s going to be in there tomorrow.

Winn and Gardner are both 1-6 against Kaz.

Just have to hope Thames doesn’t need to make any defensive plays….

  82. Matt April 14th, 2010 at 4:41 pm

Cano got somewhat of a bad break in that he hit the ball right at Wood at third who was cheating off the line a bit. Teixeira’s at bat was pretty bad though, in that he chased a pitch he could do almost nothing with and didn’t advance the other runner as well, which was a huge turning point in the inning.

BD, absolutely. I think if he’d stayed in the rotation last year, he would have given us exactly what we wanted. That said, he now has a changeup – we’ll have to see how it does in real games, but still, he’s ready now. It seems like he’s been around forever, yet he’s still just 23.

BD, don’t remind me, lol. When we lose a game now, just remember the beginning of last season. AJ and Andy were holding it up and the pen was all sorts of awful. Games were painful beyond belief. Today was a run of the mill loss, a loss the players probably already forgot about. Although, to see them all sitting around depressed and waiting for Bob Newhart to show up would be interesting.

  90. 66 stripes April 14th, 2010 at 4:45 pm

Hughes hasn’t pitched in a real game in what, 3 weeks?

And now he’s facing probably the 3rd best lineup in the AL.

Tough chore for him tomorrow night. Doesn’t help we’re facing the typical wild lefty who owns us. Would have much preferred to face Weaver.

  100. Banjo April 14th, 2010 at 4:50 pm

Go around and look at the lines of typical #4 starters

5.1 IP, 4 ER is probably the average line. Javy is pitching fine, unless you expected something more. Those who said AJ would be our ‘co-ace’ and bump AJ down to #3 set their expectations too high. Not his fault we didn’t score any runs. We score 7 runs today like we did for Andy, the perception is much different.

He was supposed to get a ton of run support, as we were facing other teams #4. So far, the other teams #4 have thrown the best games against us (Price and Piniero) this season.

  101. Blah April 14th, 2010 at 4:50 pm

Do people honestly think Vazquez was being booed today for what happened in 2004? Get over it, he was booed because he had a poor performance. Yankee fans booed because he is better than what he showed. Maybe the boos will be be a wake up call.

  102. tex's friend April 14th, 2010 at 4:51 pm

  103. BD (Boston Dave) - NJ walk tracker = 9 April 14th, 2010 at 4:51 pm

    May 2009 –

Edwar Ramirez and Jose Veras were getting plenty of innings and were getting clobbered. Mariano Rivera had given up 4 HR over 5 appearances.

The Yankees bullpen was the worst in the major leagues.

    Present Day –

The bullpen looks considerably better than last years if Joba can help replace the loss of Hughes. Robertson for a full year, Chan Ho Park, a healthy Marte, etc.

I don’t care how many runs they give up over the first week. They are poised to be one of the top handful of bullpens in the league and they sure are better than they were at this point last year.

  104. Matt April 14th, 2010 at 4:51 pm

Where in my posts do I ever assume that one game is the be all end all? If you sit in front of the TV watching it for 3.5 hours, or you spend $100 to go to the game, you want to see your investment pay off, and when it doesn’t you are frustrated and disappointed.

At least I can be honest with myself when they lose and don’t have to trick myself into believing they got “unlucky” or “caught some bad breaks.” Allowing 3 tack on runs like that late in the close game and swinging at bad pitches is called making your own bad breaks. Encouraging signs mean little if players don’t come out the next day and replicate them.

You can’t handle anyone ever criticizing your beloved Yankees players, get over it. If guys play a bad game, we aren’t afraid to point it out. Posada for example allowed a “wild pitch” that should have been a passed ball that set up a huge inning, and K’d as the go ahead run in the 8th inning. Did he have a great game? No way. But if I ever had the audacity to point it out, I would be hammered for having the nerve to not give him a break. I never say these guys are bad players, just that they didn’t come through in certain situations. It’s not a personal attack against anyone, it’s pointing out fact.

If you can’t back anything you say up with facts, and would rather just toss around personal insults, then you aren’t “shooting my points down” or anything like that, you are just embarrassing yourself .

Javy’s close. Had better stuff today, made some good pitches, just couldn’t finish hitters when he had them 0-2.

The AB to Morales was a killer for him.

He’s close and he will be fine.

Remember at this time last year, we had quite a few “fans” on here (and elsewhere) calling CC Sabathia a “bust”.

It’s obvious that Vazquez knows how to pitch. He’s just going to have to figure out how to keep his composure in all circumstances. He’s not the only pitcher in that situation, In addition, maybe it takes him a little longer to adjust back to the AL and AL hitters. He didn’t face the Angel hitters at all in ST, naturally.

I’ve seen enough from him to have faith in what he will be able to do.

    ————–

    tampayank,

Kazmir was outstanding earlier in his career. I’m only suggesting that arm injuries and/or fatigue have ruined him for the past 2 seasons.

He may recover at some point and be a solid starter, or he may never recover.

I think he needs to prove he can get back to being “good” before we give him the benefit of the doubt.

The Rays wouldn’t have traded him for so little in return, even with his contract, if they thought he was very likely to be the pitcher he was in 2007 again.

  113. Matt April 14th, 2010 at 4:55 pm

Vazquez was not too bad today, and if Aceves could have done his job his line would have looked much better than it does. The Posada “wild pitch” set up that inning and put Vazquez about as much on the ropes as you could put him, and he K’d Matsui and had Morales 3-2 before the double. If that runner is at 2nd instead of 3rd, Vazquez goes after him very differently because he doesn’t have to K him and it changes the entire way the inning progresses most likely.

  114. SJ44 April 14th, 2010 at 4:55 pm

You don’t offer facts Matt. You offer hysterical babble. That’s why its ridiculed.

Boos don’t “motivate” players. That’s more fan babble.

Booing a player in April, regardless of how much you paid for a ticket, is just being a moron.

Stay home if that’s your contribution to attending a game.

There are 162 games in a season. They aren’t going to win them all or play well in them all.

You boo lack of effort. You don’t boo results.

There is no reason to boo Vazquez, Arod or Tex today because the EFFORT was there. The RESULTS weren’t.

If you aren’t smart enough to understand the difference between the two, perhaps you are better off staying home and playing video games instead of making a fool out of yourself at the ballpark.

To me, the key at bat was Gardner’s out in the bottom on the fifth.

Swisher had just hit a triple after an 8 pitch at bat, pushing Piniero’s pitch count to the mid 80s. Had Gardner worked a long at bat, or gotten a hit, there’s a good chance Piniero doesn’t pitch the 7th, giving the Yanks another inning to work the Angels bullpen.

Instead, Gardner swings at the first pitch, grounding to first for the third out. He needed to see a pitch or two there, he was too anxious.

It’s one thing to say someone had an off game or that you think he could have a little more patient at bat. It’s quite another to call the players’ AB “an embarrassment.” That makes you sound immature and dumb. The former way of doing it at least makes you sound reasonable.

  128. Matt April 14th, 2010 at 5:01 pm

Well obviously every player except for maybe a Milton Bradley when he gets frustrated is giving it their all on the field. If every player pretty much puts in the effort, then according to you nobody can ever truly mess up because “at least they tried!” These guys are human beings, but you can’t feel bad for them all the time and let it blind your judgment.

Effort can only get you so far on the baseball field, eventually you have to start doing things well. I’m sure Cody Ransom put forth all of the effort in the world, but he’s not a good player and you can’t keep running him out there because he “tries hard.” You can admire a player who plays the game hard, but eventually you have to see results for it to matter.

Again, if you actually read my posts, I never say that every game is the be all end all. It’s one game, and one that they might have won if they did things a little better. I’ve never come out and said that the team is terrible based on one game, I’ve simply stated that guys failed to do things well in key spots today, which they did.

I said Posada stranded runners and didn’t get to a ball right in front of him that cost them a key base. He did do that, that’s a fact. Since he didn’t get things done in a lot of key spots, he didn’t have a great game, which is an opinion but a pretty standard one given what his end line was in the game today. You can brush it off or you can be insulted by it, whatever you like, but don’t try to invalidate what I said because you don’t like it. I can say what my opinion is as long as I’m not attacking other posters, and if you don’t agree with it then you don’t have to, just don’t attack me for saying it.

  129. Mike April 14th, 2010 at 5:01 pm

    Kazmir vs. NYY

    2.67 ERA in 15 games with a 1.27 WHIP and .221 BAA
87 IP with only 5 HRs given up and 72 hits.

Last year with his ‘diminished’ stuff, he had a 3.20 ERA against us in 3 games. With the exception of 1 game on opening day 2007, he has not given up more than 3 runs in any start against us (14 starts).

His worst career start against us was ironically in the ALCS when he gave up 4 runs to us.

He is obviously coming off the DL, but next to Halladay, he has been the toughest pitcher on us over the past 4-5 years. Doesn’t mean anything for tomorrow, but he has been historically tough on us.

Just in case the headcases and bridge-jumpers haven’t noticed, it’s April. Mid-April.
There’s still May, June, July, August, September and yes, October. Count on it.

Javy will be fine, just as Robertson will recover from yesterday. Javy can win 15 games for this team – as the #4 pitcher. Something most teams would salivate over for their #2. Today was just one of those days when we got outpitched. It happens.

Tomorrow, if we win, we win the series. And isn’t that what it’s about – winning series? Continue to do that on a regular basis (on average of course) and you win over 100 games/year.

    See you in October.

  132. Bronx Jeers April 14th, 2010 at 5:03 pm

The Gardner AB was also a key point in the game. As was the Morales AB, Javy’s last hitter.

Even a walk in that situation is ok because you go to Ace with the DP still in order.

The double was the worst possible result because it ended up costing them 2 runs.

  135. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 14th, 2010 at 5:08 pm

Javy can’t let the boos get to him; I think he is a bit just by the comment. The boos are extremely unfair, but he’s going to need to develop a thick skin…….Fans apparently booed Alex and Tex; I mean, come on. I don’t think Alex cares anymore, but still.

  136. Matt April 14th, 2010 at 5:08 pm

The Gardner AB kept Pineiro in the game an extra inning and probably cost them so momentum.

The Morales AB though was set up by the “wild pitch” that was more a mistake on his part by not getting to a ball that landed at his feet. He had a runner on 3rd and no outs, and with him tiring like that he was bound to make a mistake eventually with such intense pitches needing to be made. He had a great sequence to Matsui and struck him out, but made a mistake on the 3-2 changeup and paid.

However, if Hunter is still at 2nd and not at 3rd due to the wild pitch, then Vazquez might not feel so pressured to strike him out, which induces him to go to the offspeed pitches a lot more than he normally would. If he becomes too predictable trying to get a swing and a miss on a breaking ball, then if he makes a mistake like he did they are sitting on it and crush it.

You don’t know what would have happened, but I feel as if that 6th inning would have gone very differently if Hunter does not advance to 3rd on that wild pitch. It changed the approach of the pitcher, the approach of the hitters (just trying to hit a fly ball), and it put Vazquez in an especially tough spot to make high intensity pitches nearing the end of the day.

  137. Erin April 14th, 2010 at 5:11 pm

Said Vazquez: “It’s a little disappointing. It’s the first game back. I don’t think they’re forgetting from ’04 a little bit. But hopefully I’ll get some Ws in this stadium, like I said before, and they forget that.”

That AB by Gardner is why the Yankees brass is obsessed with Carl Crawford

Going to be nice to have a real LF next year and not a weak slap hitter.

Is it Winn time yet? Why is Joe ignoring him?

  140. Wave Your Hat April 14th, 2010 at 5:12 pm

“As was the Morales AB, Javy’s last hitter.”

I agree with that. I didn’t like the way Javy worked Morales there. Javy was up 1-2 in the count, then threw two straight pitches in the dirt which did not tempt Morales at all, letting Morales get back in control of the at bat.

  141. Matt April 14th, 2010 at 5:15 pm

I’m shocked that Winn has not gotten any playing time. He plays great defense, is a good contact hitter, and has some speed and a lot more extra base power than Gardner. Winn when he’s going well is what they probably expect to see more of from Gardner, but Gardner is too inconsistent in his approach sometimes at the plate because his mechanics tend to force him into hitting the ball into the air when he has no power.

Gardner has had some good at bats at times early in the season, but you never feel like he can do anything more than loop a single into left field. Eventually opposing pitchers will go after him more if he doesn’t do enough to make them think otherwise, and he will be behind in a lot more counts and see results like the pop ups and weak dribblers of today. If he could bunt for more base hits that might help him out, but I have not seen much from him in turns of bunting this season. The one he tried today was on a pitch way off the plate that he should have just pulled it back on and taken for a ball. Kind of shows that he doesn’t really have confidence in it yet.

  142. Jay April 14th, 2010 at 5:16 pm

Cashman knew when eh acquired Vazquez that 04 would not be erased until he proved it in the mind’s of the fans.

He has to do a better job than that…. let him learn from Andy how to limit damage.

  146. U-Turn April 14th, 2010 at 5:22 pm

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! YEAH, CLOSE TO BEING BOOED OUT OF THE STADIUM.

MAYBE SJ CAN MAKE “INJURY” EXCUSES FOR JAVY AGAIN!! LOL!! I’M GLAD THE FANS ARE ON HIS CASE AND I HOPE THEY DON’T LET UP.

    HAHA

  148. Jerkface April 14th, 2010 at 5:29 pm

Hope Girardi doesn’t put Thames in tomorrow. His defense vs the angels style of hitting and base running is a mismatch

  149. Dan April 14th, 2010 at 5:29 pm

    GREAT GAME FROM THE YANKS!

AND WONDERBOY HUGHES GOES TOMORROW. GOING TO BE FUN!

  150. Bill April 14th, 2010 at 5:29 pm

“Fair or not, he has to pitch well because he has the history.”

He does, indeed. However, we also have to allow for last year, a part of his history which undoubtedly piqued the Yankees’ interest, was an outlier. He was spectacular, but he outperformed his career stats in almost every category by a pretty wide margin. I think his tenure with the White Sox provides a pretty reasonable baseline for what we should expect. He averaged 209 innings and 4.40 ERA, which was good for 13 wins. I’d look for more of the same, with 2-3 more wins.

  151. Dan April 14th, 2010 at 5:30 pm

THAMES TOMORROW. DOESN’T GET ANY MORE AMUSING THAN THAT

  152. Patrick April 14th, 2010 at 5:30 pm

Agreed, I’d much rather see Gardner or Winn.

  153. Dan April 14th, 2010 at 5:31 pm

    NO PIES TODAY?

NO THRILLING COMEBACKS WITHOUT MATSUI AND DAMON!

  154. SJ44 April 14th, 2010 at 5:33 pm

Just a quick update on the nephew.

He pulled a hamstring wiping himself after a particularly bad dump.

    Day to day.

Winn is garbage he is washed up. The yanks need to sign Jayson Werth in the offseason.

Maybe there should be a test imposed to be able to post here.

Thanks for the post of confidence. Exactly how will Jayson Werth help the 2010 Yankees ?

Shudder to think that there’s ONLY 154 games left.

Javy pitched fine today. Piniero was tough today. He didn’t throw anything straight all day.
    ============
I agree Piniero was tough as nails out there but I still haven’t seen anything from Vasquez that tells me he deserves to be on this team. The word “heartless” comes to mind when I think of him. I don’t think he’s made of the type of stuff which will allow him to be a successful pitcher in New York. We’ve seen similar stuff across town with some of the pitchers The Mets have on their staff. Some guys can pitch under the bright lights and some guys can’t

Cashman wanted to roll the dice a second time on Vasquez, more power to him but I’ll believe it when I see it before my eyes. Right now Vasquez has shown me nothing to make me think he should be on this team.

Girardi will go with the lineup tomorrow that gives the Yankees the best chances of winning against the Angels. If he goes with Thames it’s because he feels Thames in the lineup gives the Yankees the best chances. It’s Hughes’s job to make sure that he pitches well enough that Thames in the outfield (if he is there) is a nonstory. It’s not up to Girardi to shield and protect Hughes. It’s up to Hughes to pitch well.

I was at the game today and it was a first time ever I was truly disappointed with both Yankee fans and the staff at the stadium while attending a game.

After Javy gave up his first hit, half the people in my section were booing and complaining. One guy actually asked how long everyone thinks Javy will stay in the rotation. Every hit after that people were booing and yelling about how much he sucks. I honestly felt embarrassed as a fan today. I just do not understand what people get out of this. It was an absolutely gorgeous day to watch Yankee baseball and all these people can do is whine and complain for 3 1/2 hours.

On another note, at the beginning of the 7th inning, 5 guys snuck down to the front when some people left the game. They spent 3 innings yelling homophobic slurs, racist slurs, and cursing at Abreu and even Matsui at one point when he was up to bat.

After several people complained to the security guards, the guards did absolutely nothing. The security guards looked at their tickets and knew they were not in the right seat, but chose to not care. One security guard sat down behind them and was talking to them as they continued to curse and yell homphobic slurs at Bobby. All with several children present which makes it all the more disgraceful that they were doing this and the guards did nothing.

The Yankees were not an embarrassment today. The fans were.

I know its only 2 games with Vazquez but this is the reason i would have over payed for Halliday. You know what you are getting with Halliday who in my mind is the best pitcher in baseball. Sabathia Halliday Burnett Pettitte = world Series title#28

LGY, I knew this was going to happen – this is why I hate Yankee fans. Of course, they also booed Alex and Tex and once booed Mo and Jeter.

“It’s early enough, so I don’t feel like I’m too out of the loop,” Hughes said on Wednesday, adding that the extra excitement of his first start this season won’t be too different from usual. “That’s true all season. It doesn’t matter what time of year it is. The first or second inning, you have to control your emotions and make your pitches.”

Ideally, having that changeup in his back pocket will allow Hughes to keep hitters off balance and go later into games. In his career, batters have hit just .221 against Hughes the first time through the order, but that number jumps to .297 in subsequent at-bats.

Is my memory correct, that Minaya and the Mets didn’t want Piniero?

That team has a bunch of people running it who are walking examples of the Peter Principle, “promoted to the level of incompetence.”

    But I’m lovin’ it!

  166. Bronx Jeers April 14th, 2010 at 6:03 pm

    LGY,

Did you ever think that they possibly knew the guard?

    Security is usually pretty tight.

  167. Joe from Long Island April 14th, 2010 at 6:08 pm

LGY – Last season, I had a similar experience at the Stadium. A group complained to security, and a small army descended, escorted several out. A few guards stayed for a bit, then made a few stops for the rest of the game. I thanked them, and was told that the Yankees’ stadium ops crew had been instructed to make things “family friendly” as much as possible.

I would suggest you contact the Yankees security, maybe by email, with your seat location. They seemed to take things seriously during that game.

  168. Wade April 14th, 2010 at 6:09 pm

Another season. Another loss to a pitcher they’ve never faced before. Crazy how these guys hit pitchers they know but not guys they’ve never seen

  169. LGY - Child Prodigy/GB7's Bestest Buddy April 14th, 2010 at 6:10 pm

    Bronx,

They did not know the guards. They were yelling obnoxious things at the guards too and the guards were annoyed at them but did not do anything. Except, at one point one guard asked them to please stop cursing and instead of cursing with the homophobic and racist slurs they would say things like futher mucker and apparently that was ok then.

  170. LGY - Child Prodigy/GB7's Bestest Buddy April 14th, 2010 at 6:12 pm

I have never had anything but a great experience at Yankee Stadium.

The staff IMO has always been fantastic from security, food service, team store, etc. and I have sat all over that stadium from the bleachers up to the luxury boxes

  171. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 14th, 2010 at 6:13 pm

This was not the first time they’ve seen Piniero as he was on the Mariners for years…

  172. Rich in NJ April 14th, 2010 at 6:21 pm

    LGY

That’s kind of why I stopped going to sporting events years ago.

Some of these jerks, especially drunks, can provide a reasonable basis to fight them.

But I realized that was absolutely nuts. So I just don’t go.

    See you soon tough guy.

  175. talltenor April 14th, 2010 at 6:43 pm

My solution to the obnoxious fans nearby problem has been to buy seats in the alcohol-free sections. You may still hear stuff, but it’s relatively far away.

That was in the old YS, though. Haven’t made it to the new one.

A-Rod at it again. Another woman Cameron Diaz now. He must really think the Yankee’s fans are dumb. He keep picking these women out of a hat. Somebody please tell him we already know he is gay. So he can stop the game playing.
