Today’s lineup vs. Angels
Before the game, Ramiro Pena and Francisco Cervelli took extra batting practice. Between the two of them, they’ve had one start this season. Brett Gardner was also out there getting some early swings, and Nick Swisher and Robinson Cano eventually joined.
New look to the lineup tonight.
Derek Jeter SS
Nick Swisher RF
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Jorge Posada C
Marcus Thames DH
Curtis Granderson CF
Randy Winn LF
RHP Phil Hughes

I do not win
Uh oh, Thames AND Winn.
Here comes the LoHud meltdown in 3 … 2 … 1 ….
bodhi
Terrible game from Fleury last night, especially on that last goal.
We need all the top seeds to advance in case the Bruins advance (are gifted the series) past the Sabres.
According to dbag John Boston Buccigross, Ryan Miller and Tuuuuukkka Rask are the 2 best goalies in the East (no, he did not mean the East playoffs). Because they are 1 and 2 in GAA and Save %.
Sorry, John, but Tuuuuuuuuukka hasnt proven anything yet, while Lundqvist is a 3 time Vezina finalist!
Darn! I considered putting Swish second. But I still would have lost since Winn is playing.
Trisha-
Hang in there, its still early. However, I certainly wouldn’t mind a David Wright home run.
I have Ben Sheets going tonight at 10. He’s been iffy so far
Joe Girardi wins Today’s GTLU
William Buckner came the closest. He switched Granderson and Winn.
Before the game, Ramiro Pena and Francisco Cervelli took extra batting practice.
****************************
Cisco will be part of my GTLU guess tomorrow
Sorry. William Buckner switcher Granderson and Thames!
Any lineup with Jeter, Tex, Alex, Granderson, Posada, Cano and Swisher is still pretty darn good. I’d rather see the better defensive team out there anyway…I’m perfectly fine with the lineup.
Darn!!
I thought I switched Thames and Grandy but no matter.
I knew today was Winns night!!
Dude,
Fleury is clearly injured.
They employed curious use of him down the stretch – playing Johnson a suspicious amount of times.
It’s now dawned on me that they were hoping he’d get over the “lower body” injury he had in November.
I know he’s hurt, because he can’t squeeze his pads, and has trouble pushing off going post to post – and that’s not Fleury, who is quick as a cat on his feet.
The short side goal he gave up saw him slow to the left post.
He’s hurt. Has to be.
ANy way, I’m off to the Stadium. Be happy to talk puck with you later
.
At-least Thames isn’t in the outfield.
At least there’s 3 OF and not 2 OF and a plant.
Erica, you’d have to see this game to believe it. Colorado had a Mets runner in a rundown between third and home and the 3B thought it was cuter to run after him than to throw to the catcher, and so by the time he did, Pelfrey knocked the ball out of the catcher’s hand and was ruled safe.
Actually I guess it’s pretty funny. When they say that’s why you play the games, there you have it. I was counting on a huge game from JDLR.
Looking at the numbers, Kazmir has been tougher on the Yankees than I remember. Tex and Jorge are the only ones with much success against him.
If the Yankees ever did what the Mets just did, LoHud would short circuit.
Erica, I hope Sheets does an awesome job for you. He is an amazing pitcher and I would love to see him back to form. Poor guy and his injuries. Imagine where he’d be right now if he had been healthy.

Joe Girardi is an idiot. That’s all
pat, OMG you’re right. People would be popping blood vessels and if the Yankees ended up losing the game, they’d want trades.
At least boston lost today. The AL East will be tight.
Thames is 5-for-15 with a HR career vs. Kazmir, so he was playing somehow for sure, Girardi loves to play match-ups.

The guy just doesn’t have it today. It happens. I’d be happier if he weren’t one of my fantasy pitchers however.

But I think Manual goes first. The NY media isn’t quite like the Baltimore media
1. So Joe Girardi throws GTLU a curve ball. All right, then….
2. m, I’ll help you out and root for the Astros to win one. I lived in DC when the O’s went on their historic losing streak (0-18 to start the season, I think, in 1989, or was it 90?), and it was brutal. Here’s hoping your hometown team breaks the skid.
3. I read something on the previous thread that Mike Cameron got hurt? I know Boston got clobbered this afternoon, does anyone know what happened to Cameron?
“Past a diving Giambi” has a much nicer ring to it now then it used to.
Who is the manager in Houston now?
Erica, wherever you are right now, I officially concede the week. I love him, he’s mine, by JDLR is having game from hell. There’s no way to pull this one out of the fire.

Perfect lineup. Give NJ a day off, get Tims’ bat in the lineup, and keep the good D and give Winn a start
They should hire Cashman to turn around the NYRangers ! He would lose even more hair.

You never know. Its way too early. I have 5 starts left and they could all be bombs (although that would make me cry)
Btw- I don’t know if you know this, but I used the “compare teams” feature for our matchup this week. They actually gave your team the edge by 9 points. Your team had better offense and mine had better pitching. But it was really close.
Its going to be very interesting to see how the week plays out. Sadly, I am going to miss most of it. (But I am SO excited to go away!!!!)
Just wondering, but why does NJ need a day off?
At least there’s 3 OF and not 2 OF and a plant.
———————————————————————
Golden! Pel, Golden!
NJ does not have any chronic injury problems like Matsui with his knees who needed a day off now and then.
Not a great situation for Winn’s first start. Girardi’s not doing him any favors, Winn should have had his first start against a righty, maybe give Swish a day off. Granderson and Winn back to back against Kazmir will make for some short innings.
Giambi looks 60 y/o.
No Party in the USA today
No Miley Cyrus tonight?
Rumor is Marcus Thames into music will be REM’s “Stand”

Erica, I still swear by pitching. I am going to set my lineup next week so that I maximize my pitching. Last week JDLR gave me 32.5 points in one outing. That’s a lot of points. This week so far I think I’m at -5 with him. And I think if you can get the maximum number possible of outings out of your pitching staff, it’s the best way to go.
I don’t think you’re going to have any problem.

We crossed in cyberspace, but I did correct myself; you are correct, you switched Grandy and Thames. I gave you kudos on GTLU Update on my blog. With as many different lineups as were entered today, I thought it was noteworthy that you came soooooooo close!
I had a hunch that the winning lineup today needed a “Winn.”
Kazmir is a guy the Yankees can work and get out of there before the 6th inning even if he has not given up any runs.
NJ is the guy in the lineup who make pitchers work the most so would he would seem to be a key part of that game strategy.
I am not one to criticize the lineup but today’s is a bit of a head scratcher.

I realize that-I was kidding!
Given his career body of work, I don’t think its logical to expect much of anything of him hitting lefties. He should be hitting 9th against them if and when he is in the lineup. This is not a 24 year old prospect, this is a 30 year old finished product. Although perhaps Long can work some magic with him…either way he’s a bona fide all star type player as long as he can OPS somewhere near .700 against them.

Randy Winn is a switch hitter. I’d like to see him have a 3 for 4 day, play the entire game and have Nick replace Thames ASAP.

Awesome. Thank you!!!! I will e-mail it to you tonight when I get home from Happy Hour
I am more worried about scoring runs for Phil than I am Phil’s pitching. Hughes will do fine… But will we hit Kazmir?
joe wanted to get thames in without sacrificing defense. thats why he is at DH. And if the numbers are true, tex should be able to break out of this today. 7-11 vs. Kaz? Is that right?
Benny, yeah I think it is. You know I think he’s a special kid and that he’s going to be an outstanding pitcher, but he’s got to learn all about being a major league starter again; along with this education comes growing pains. In the NJ.com article I posted this morning, it mentioned that the Yankees think Joba’s development is complete (which Cash has said), but not Phil’s. That means they know that Phil is basically learning on the job at this point.
Benny – no, it’s not wishful thinking. I really believe Phil has it in him. I really think he’s going to surprise a lot of folks. Not me, though, I have long been a believer in his talent.
I’ve got an idea. Instead of some silly, contrived day where everyone wears the same number, why doesn’t MLB and the individual teams actually do something to improve race relations and do away with the old boy network that runs rampant. I know, wishful thinking. How could I be so unrealistic.
“Isin’t Winn better against lefties anyway?”
Last year Winn had a .384 OPS vs lefties. I just think giving Winn his first start in 2010 vs a lefty, when he’s had all of 2 plate appearances so far, isn’t ding Winn any favors.

Ledger_Yankees Indeed, Mo’s first number was 58, though his favorite number as a kid was 5. Clearly, that’s not available here.
winn may be able to bunt for a hit… Kaz may be a bit rusty on the mound. Hopefully.
I just don’t get benching Gardner AND Johnson against Kazmir? Last year, he gave up .258 BAA vs. Righties, .261 BAA vs. Lefties. Lefties also had a slightly higher OBP and SLG off him than Righties.
In the years before that Kazmir was better against lefties but given what you saw in the playoffs, I would not bench Gardner or Johnson. Make him prove he can get them out again.
In any case it won’t matter too much. He’ll be at his 100 pitch count limit sometime early in the 5th inning anyway.

My favorite place at Waterfront Park (Stadium, whatever) is the margarita stand!
I don’t know if this as been address here already:

Keith, has you seen or heard any scouting reports on Jesus Montero’s defense in AAA? He hasn’t throw anyone out yet but the Scranton pitching staff hasn’t imploded or anything. Is the “he’ll never catch in the big leagues” thing losing a little steam?
Klaw (12:16 PM)
I’ve heard he’s as bad as ever back there, but has lost some weight and maybe he could handle left field.
From listening to games he caught and talking to a buddy who had seen him behind the plate, he said montero did not play that bad.
But if he could move enough to play the outfield, would not mind that out come either.
Kazmir is good but not worrisome. Yankees will hit tonight. They usually do everynight regardless of the pitcher. If they can knock Beckett and Lester around they can hit Kazmir.
Nick Johnson will see plenty of action tonight. As soon as Kazmir is out, so will Thames.
Erica have a tremendous time. God knows you’ve more than earned it. I really enjoy spending time with my ni*ces and nephews, so that is definitely a way to forget the stresses of life. Then of course there’s the casinos! You are going to have such a nice time.
By the way, the reason I used the * in that word is that the censor did not allow the use of that word last season. When I am done with this post I am going to try to post it, just to see if they’ve changed it back to the acceptable list. And no, I’m not joking!
ERA of 3.5 in the AL would be tough to hit for Hughes. Or most AL starters, really. Take last year as an example; there were 6 AL starters to meet or beat 3.5 (Greinke, King Felix, Halladay, CC, Lester, and Verlander).
Erica-have a great time on your trip! You’ve definitely earned it
Javy Vasquez is proving to be the pitcher we all knew he would be. When Guillen say’s that Javy “is soft” that says that Cashman likes repeating mistakes. Javy is gone mentally and his quote about saying “it’s unfair” proves it. Trade him while we can!!!!!!!

___
While i agree with you, lets also remember he is hitting about a buck fifty in those 8 games. Why do we have to go through this every day with the lineup. You people complained almost every day last year and they won the world series. Joe knows what he is doing.
Kazmir is not just an automatic 5 inning pitcher. He is a talented pitcher that does have trouble keep his pitch count down, but he is very much capable of going out there and giving you 7 innings.
There is no guarantee NJ will get more than 1 at bat. With Thames, Granderson’s trouble with LHP, and Winn at the bottom of the lineup Kazmir can possibly save a lot of bullets with those 3.
Halladay, CC, Lester
Only three in the entire AL East.. And they are all really good. 4.25 or so and staying healthy all year would be a victory for Phranchise.
“Patrick April 15th, 2010 at 3:51 pm

Patrick, I think I found the disagreement for our next wager!
I’ll take ‘Joe Girardi is not an idiot’ and then we can agree on a way to settle it.
Granderson’s trouble with LHP
___
Has granderson had trouble with lefties this year? I feel like i have seen multiple hits already vs. lefties. No less than the other guys.
I think that Phil Hughes is going to do a tremendous job tonight. I don’t think he’ll have any trouble. JMO
I think Betsey needs to realize (and I’m not saying she doesn’t) that even though she thinks of Phil as her pet project, he “belongs” to all Yankee fans and as such is going to be as vulnerable to the attacks of people who flip out as any other player. He may get a little extra dispensation, but that remains to be seen. The point is that fan reaction doesn’t guide what the Yankees do, nor does press reaction. So if at any point Phil has a less than stellar outing, and people and the media second guess him, it won’t be at all unusual. They would be doing the same thing to Joba, Ace, Mitre, or anyone else who landed the 5th starter role. It’s all part of it.
Only Phil will guide his role on the Yankees, nobody else. So try not to pay attention to disgruntled fans or the overexacting media.
JMO
Is it wrong to suggest that Girardi decided to start Winn and Thames today because it is Jackie Robinson Day?
Hughes line tonight:
6 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks, 6 k’s
Granderson has 3 hits and 1 BB in 11 PA against LHP.
It is an encouraging start but it is far too early to completely discount how bad he has been throughout his career.
I will say it again.
The Yankees should wear Elston Howards number as a tribute to Jackie Robinson, for making it possible for him to be on the team. He wore number 32 for all you new Yankee fans.
Joe in LI,
It worked! They even added some insurance runs. 5-1.
I’m not sure I’m going to adopt the Astros, my secondary team has been the Giants lately. But they seem to be on their way now (thanks to playing the Astros for most of the first week).
Perhaps I’ll just keep my eye on them, until Brad Mills is gone.
While i agree with you, lets also remember he is hitting about a buck fifty in those 8 games. Why do we have to go through this every day with the lineup. You people complained almost every day last year and they won the world series. Joe knows what he is doing.
I don’t know about “you people” but you’re replying to me so I’ll assume what you said is directed to me.
It’s his blind adherence to lefty/righty splits that get me. Kazmir had trouble against lefties last year and we racked him around in the playoffs. Thames has done nothing so far in three starts and was supposed to be a pinch-hit bat off the bench. Instead, he’s getting starts because Girardi can’t get past the idea that not every lefty should be treated like Randy Johnson in his prime.
I like Joe as a manager but he slavishly does this like Torre did with his overuse of two guys in the bullpen to the exclusion of everyone else. It’s a blind spot.
“My little cousins are actually my favorite people ever. I think its cause we have the same maturity level
”
I understand that’s a trait shared by December birthday people!!! My young ni*ces and nephews love spending time with me because we are definitely in synch!

Bodhi – Just to say I am with you all the way on your sentiments on Joba Chamberlain. I am a big fan of Joba and will always be. Your comments on Vazques probably costing Joba his career could be so true.
Somewhere last year towards the end of the season, he lost favor with management after all the superlatives Cashman had said about in 2007, 2008 and part of 2009. The innings limit did not help- either.
But yet in the WS after Phil crashed, and he did, Joe trusted Joba to pitch out of the bull pen. And he did a great job.
If we are discussing theories, and we are, we can also suggest that management feels Mo may be in his last year or so and decided that Joba is the best candidate to replace him. Hence his demotion to the pen, and it is. Joba was NEVER given the same opportunities as Phil, and that is well known. Whatever.
I hope Joba has a great season out of the bullpen and is reconsidered for the rotation in 2011. You can never say never with Yankee management because in 2008 Joba was projected to be an Ace and Melancon was projected to be Moe’s replacement.
How this for a great outing? My Nats 1, the Phils 1, bottom of the 6th.
“It’s his blind adherence to lefty/righty splits that get me. ”

I didn’t read bodhi’s original comments, but are you two seriously thinking that Javy cost Joba his career?

Exactly. But you know what they will get from this? “well he lost 59 games and then 4 more in the playoffs”. Pretty sad!!!

I will say it again.
The Yankees should wear Elston Howards number as a tribute to Jackie Robinson, for making it possible for him to be on the team. He wore number 32 for all you new Yankee fans.
Isn’t this more of an indictment of how racist Yankee management was that it took them another 8 years until 1955 to actual get a black player. Should have had Mays, Doby, Aaron, or Newcombe on the squad but thats what happens when racists run teams.

Have a great vacation!! You’ve earned it!!
m, I did read bodhi’s original comments, and he is not guilty as charged.
For those whining about Thames being in the line-up (AGAIN), he’s 5-15 with a double and a homer against Kazmir. The only two that hit him better are Posada and Teixeira. Maybe they should bench Jeter and Rodriguez, who are hitting .111 and .125, respectively.

If you know your sports history the most racist team at that time was the redsox. It took them until 1959. And I cant paint people with that brush. The world to me is a better place now..
Lets celebrate as an organization Howard.
Oh well Im never going to win this argument.
Ellie Howard was a great player and man! He should be celebrated for his barrier breaking with the Yanks.
