Even with a lefty starter for the A’s, it’s the Yankees regulars tonight in Oakland, with the only change being Swisher and Granderson flip flopped in the batting order.

Derek Jeter SS
Nick Johnson DH
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Jorge Posada C
Nick Swisher RF
Curtis Granderson CF
Brett Gardner LF

RHP Javier Vazquez

I wonder if Joe Girardi wrote out his line-up card against a wall??????

    :-)

Glad to see Gardy getting the nod tonight, he made a lot happen this past weekend, kind of deserves to be in the lineup, and with Javy pitching you need your best derfense out there :-)

I like this line-up. No problem at all.
Thames eventually will get more at bats.
No sure about Winn. He might as well show up to the park with his glove and leave the bats at the hotel.

Base on tonight’s pitching matchup, my prediction for the final score:

    NYY — 2
    Oakland — 12

  9. CB April 20th, 2010 at 6:45 pm

Gonzalez throws a very big looping curve ball. He’s struggled with his command a great deal in the past.

He’s a guy that Gardner can run on if he’s able to get on base. He’s left handed but I don’t remember him having a particularly great pick off move.

The outfield in Oakland is really enormous. Javy is a fly ball pitcher.

It makes a lot of sense to play Gardner tonight. Oakland doesn’t have a particularly good offense and the yankee’s bats outside of Gardner should be able to get to Gonzalez.

  10. Dave F April 20th, 2010 at 6:46 pm

    Doreen,

I think I may have Granderson and Swisher reversed and did not win.

  11. Dan April 20th, 2010 at 6:48 pm

I don’t think anyone could’ve guessed that lineup.

  12. GrouchoNYY April 20th, 2010 at 6:51 pm

It’s very windy and partly sunny here in SF. It was supposed to rain much of the day, but it’s been dry all afternoon. I’m hoping to stay dry, if not warm.

  14. GreenBeret7 April 20th, 2010 at 6:52 pm

Read a remark today on here about Eduardo Nunez still butchering plays at shortstop. He’s had 2 errors, but, both are at 2nd base, not shortstop. He’s played 2nd base in 17 games. Though it’s still to early to say he’s got it figured out at shortstop, he’s looked great out there, so far. He turned two more DPs today (5 in 8 games) with 12 putouts and 23 assists….no errors.

  15. stuckey April 20th, 2010 at 6:55 pm

“Read a remark today on here about Eduardo Nunez still butchering plays at shortstop. ”

No, I was asking because he’s bat has looked so good, why he’s not considered a higher rated prospect. I was speculating that perhaps he didn’t project to be a middle infielder in the majors.

I didn’t know he previously has a reputation as a bad fielder.

So if his bat is for real, is he legit?

  18. LGY - Child Prodigy/GB7's Bestest Buddy April 20th, 2010 at 7:03 pm

I like Gardner playing tonight. First priority is getting Javy on track so given how big that OF is and Javy’s tendency to give up fly balls good defense behind him should help. Against Gonzalez they should not need a bigger bat in the lineup with Thames.

Gonzalez has not cracked 100 pitches in his 2 starts so his arm strength should not be great right now. At full strength he is a guy that would have trouble with this lineup. Where he is at right now does not bode well for him lasting deep into this game.

    Also, FWIW

    In the minors:

Against RH: .219 AVG; Against LH: .224 AVG

    Last year:

    In 112 PA’s against LH: .340/.446/.649

    CB,

Do you know if he has had trouble against lefties in the minors or was last year just an aberration?

  19. GreenBeret7 April 20th, 2010 at 7:04 pm

CB, it’s difficult to say about Gonzales’ move, because NYY has never run on him, though the league is 8-4 on him before this year. suzuki is going to make them think twice about straight steals, though. He gets better every game, it seems. he’s thrown out 5 of 9 this year, so far.

“Gonzalez throws a very big looping curve ball. He’s struggled with his command a great deal in the past.”

    ————

I’ve been keeping my eye on Gonzalez so far this year.

If the Yanks hitters stay patient, this guys pitch count will go up fast.

He’s got good stuff but he gets in long counts and/or walks guys.

I don’t think the Yanks will have any problem getting to this guy if they can get in good hitters counts, or simply get his pitch count up very quickly.

It will be a bad sign, IMO, if they even let Gonzalez go more than 6IP.

    Adv: Yanks

    It does.

And for those that sometimes doubt it, it shows that Girardi is actually using his brain when making the lineup :)

  22. Ed Rieger April 20th, 2010 at 7:08 pm

Not sure why Granderson is 8th.. that puts two lefties (who cant hit lefties) back to back at the bottom of the lineup. Should have went with the “Regular” lineup.

  23. m April 20th, 2010 at 7:09 pm

All I remember was Gio coming into the Bronx off a stretch of bad pitching, and basically having the game of his life. Not sure if we chased him eventually, but I remember 6 innings of domination.

  25. Rob B April 20th, 2010 at 7:12 pm

One question I have about this line up:

If they are facing a lefty, then why have two lefties together in the back of the order?

Although, I suppose splitting up the lefties has more to do with relievers, doesn’t it?

    Forget I said anything.

On another note: I’m really relieved to see that it was not a Yankee that was the bid PED announcement.

  26. GreenBeret7 April 20th, 2010 at 7:13 pm

Bleich has had command issues tonight, so far. 3 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Krum, Adams and Smith have the 3 Trenton hits.

No speed gun readings, so far on Bleich.

  30. LGY - Child Prodigy/GB7's Bestest Buddy April 20th, 2010 at 7:16 pm

Jose Molina and Cody Ransom were in the lineup last year when they faced Gio (oh the good ol times of Cody) Gardner also played for Damon that day, so it was not exactly the A lineup out there.

Gardner went 1-3 with a BB and a 3B against Gio. Maybe Joe went back to the tape and liked what he saw ;) .

Thames on the other hand is 1-6 with a BB against Gio.

?But the orioles and Jays are just so bad. I can?t see them not running up numbers against those clubs.?

We must not be watching the same Jays!

The Jays are currently 4th in the AL in team batting. (The Yanks are 3rd). The Suxers are 11th.

And while Toronto is 9th in team pitching, the Suxers are 12th.

Unless they resurrect like the Phenix, I don?t see them holding off the Jays.

GB, Romine is off to a very tough start. I checked his stats last night and they’re not pretty.

And a cheap call to keep Arias off the bases and potential Stolen Bases.

And RemDawwwwg didnt even acknowledge it was cheap.

  53. CB April 20th, 2010 at 7:47 pm

“Do you know if he has had trouble against lefties in the minors or was last year just an aberration?”

    LGY-

His splits in the minors are pretty similar so I’d guess it’s an aberration. 112 plate appearances isn’t a particularly large sample.

It would be very strange for Gonzalez to be better against righties than lefties. One of his major issues over his career is that he was largely a two pitch pitcher and very dependent on that big curve ball.

He’s been working on a change up and I thought that was in part to deal with righties as a starter.

Lefties who have trouble with lefties are usually fastball – change up guys who don’t have a good breaking ball. Gonzalez doesn’t really fit that criteria.

  54. GreenBeret7 April 20th, 2010 at 7:47 pm

bleich pitching in the bottom of the 5th inning:
    fly out

    ground out

    Walk

    Walk

Deep fly out to left field

Bleich has been behind every batter this inning and most in the game.

  55. Benny Blanco April 20th, 2010 at 7:51 pm

  56. CR9 April 20th, 2010 at 7:51 pm

    CB

Didnt see the match today. Read the recap, and Mourinho said he studied Barca and realized that Inter couldnt lose the ball in their own 3rd if they wanted any chance of getting a positive result out of the game.

He then said that the first goal given up was because they failed their objective of not losing the ball in their own 3rd, but didnt make the same mistake again.

Did you watch it, and if so, what were your thoughts?

  57. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 20th, 2010 at 7:51 pm

Wow, lots of walks- maybe a mechanical issue? GB, how old is Bleich ?

  58. m April 20th, 2010 at 7:52 pm

Anyone watching the Boston game? Is Lewis pitching as badly as he is on gameday. They’re trying to give him outs, and he’s walking the park and hitting batters.

  59. Doreen - GTLU Standings & Rules April 20th, 2010 at 7:52 pm

Again, I apologize for announcing the winners of tonight’s GTLU erroneously.

I saw Chad’s blog header that Girardi was going with his regulars and didn’t look at the actual lineup. It is true that he went with his regular players, but he did not go with his regular lineup.

    No excuse, just an explanation.

    Classic Pete Abe.

“Scutaro and Youkilis walked before Martinez grounded an RBI single into center. The game is now being delayed while medical workers revive the thousands of fans who fainted. The players have all gathered around Martinez at first base patting him on the back. It’s quite a scene.”

  65. GreenBeret7 April 20th, 2010 at 7:56 pm

    Top of the 6th inning

    Laird singles to right field

    Sublett strikes out

Gorecki pops out to center field

    Smith flies out to left

Charleston has tied their game at 1-1. Murton drives in Mack with a sac fly

Black still has his no hitter through two innings (unearned run)

  66. CB April 20th, 2010 at 7:56 pm

Didn’t have time to watch the match today. Very surprising outcome. I don’t know – it sounds more like Barca having breakdowns in their third more than anything else. After they go up 1-0 on that goal by Pedro – there’s no way to anticipate Barca giving up 3 goals. There’s just no way.

So while Inter being better with the ball in their third can only help of course, that’s not going to be the direct driver for Inter being able to score 3 goals after going down 1-0.

Up 1-0 I’m sure Pep was very happy and was looking to hold the lead or at worst go home 1-1. They do that they likely advance.

They are in a bad spot. It happens. They’ve won so much that it’s very surprising but no team is perfect.

That said, it’s not hopeless. They could win 2-0 at home. But Mourhino is just going to pack things in and try to prevent any advances by Barca.

  67. Billy April 20th, 2010 at 7:57 pm

I’m watching the Mets’ game while I’m packing for a conference. Reyes hits a triple which plates 2.

Keith Hernandez actually did a very nice job of teaching. He discussed now the second baseman and third baseman inappropriately directed the SS taking the relay from OF to throw home, where they clearly did not have a play on Pelfrey scoring. That allowed Reyes to go to 3rd; if they had throw to 3rd in the first place, Reyes was a dead duck. And they might have gotten Reyes for the third out there before Pelfrey scored.

Hernandez discussed now it’s the 2B responsibility to make that call to the SS, telling him where the play is. Cost them a run, and allowed another runner to be on 3rd.

Hernandez can do a nice job.

Interesting about Gardy seeing Gio in the minors. Wonder what his numbers are against him but not sure if there is anywhere to look that up. I would assume they are pretty good because he got the nod in left.

  84. CB April 20th, 2010 at 8:02 pm

“Bleich has walked the world tonight, but his stuff must be hard to square up.”

It’s early but it seems like he might be struggling to balance those two things. When his stuff plays up he might be having trouble commanding it. But if he’s not throwing hard he’s easier to hit.

Don’t know how he’s throwing tonight – just speculating on a pattern that seems to have developed last year.

With nelson cruz and vlad guerror on first and second, Texas just successfully executed a double steal.

    They’ve swiped 6 bags.

I honestly can’t remember seeing a team this bad at stopping the running game.

    CB

“After they go up 1-0 on that goal by Pedro – there’s no way to anticipate Barca giving up 3 goals.”

Absolutely. I couldnt foresee that at all. I said yesterday if they got one goal, they’d likely advance. Especially it being the first goal.

“That’s not going to be the direct driver for Inter being able to score 3 goals after going down 1-0″

That is why i asked your thoughts. Because I couldnt imagine how they scored 3 goals, and wanted to know if you watched it. As you said, probably just mistakes in their own third.

“That said, it’s not hopeless. They could win 2-0 at home. But Mourhino is just going to pack things in and try to prevent any advances by Barca.”

I believe Mourinho will as well, but I think that would be a grave mistake. Barca are too good, talented, and special to keep off the scoreboard, even if they fully commit to shutting down their half of the pitch.

2-0 is certainly not out of the realm of possibility. Nor 3-1. Actually, since Barca are such a great home team, I fully expect a 1-0/2-0/3-0/ or 3-1 Barca result (not much of a prediction, I know). Obviously 1-0 doesnt help them and 3-1 only gets them to extra time.

Joe, I thought it was warm those nights. I’m not complaining mind you – just thought it was interesting. They won, so that’s all that counts; they don’t get extra points for SB totals. Yep, last year they had that crazy game where they just wore Varitek out; that was fun, lol.

Billy, cool! Yep, Austin seems like a neat kid; Chad did an interview with him that he posted here and he seemed very grounded and down to earth. He’s very young and facing better pitchers than he has in his life; an adjustment period is to be expected. I hope to see him in pinstripes in a few years; I know the Yanks were very impressed with his defensive abilities in ST.

“I believe Mourinho will as well, but I think that would be a grave mistake. Barca are too good, talented, and special to keep off the scoreboard, ”

    CR9,

I would not do anything significant to enhance Barca’s capacity to dominate ball possession. That just seems like playing with fire.

But I do think Mourhino will try that – to what extent is the question.

Just what I read about the game – it sounded like the issues was Barca playing sluggishly on the defensive end.

3 goals down 1-0 is a complete defensive collapse. Inter aren’t good enough to do that offensively without massive gaps in what barca was doing.

It’s an outlier game. They happen. It’s unfortunate that it happened now.

Iniesta will be back next game. Givine Xavi and Iniesta the opportunity to play on the ball is a very dangerous tactic, especially with the Barca forward line healthier again.

How do you go into the season with 2 catchers who cannot throw anyone out? If you are going to have someone as bad as VMart starting you at least need a good defensive back up.

When the Yankees let Molina walk I thought the Sox would go after him especially since he was so cheap.

This was an interesting note from Pete Abe the other day explaining the red sox approach to the running game:

“The Red Sox do not make any decision without a careful, detailed analysis of the pros and cons.

So when Terry Francona says that he would rather have his pitchers focus on the batter instead of worrying too much about holding runners and prohibiting stolen bases, there’s data behind it. Over the course of the season, that strategy will produce more success than failure. …

It’s impossible to say to what degree the Sox benefited by having their pitchers worry more about the batter than the runner. But they believe that over 162 games, it will make a difference.”

Some really remarkable stuff in boston. Lots of research and ideas.

    1. Big Popup has Kd 17 times in 39 AB

    2. Texas has stolen on the Suxers 8 times already (while I was still in the car; could have stolen more between the car and the house!)

    3. The last time the Suxers started out with a record as bad as this one was 1932. THEY FINISHED LAST.

    4. The last time the Suxers went 1-6 at home was – DRUM ROLL!!! – 1928.

    :) :) :)

Just to be clear here, Trisha does not believe the Sux will be able to right this ship. There are too many holes and it’s taking on water faster than the players can bail.

RE: CB giving Pete’s report of the Sox analysis of the running game –

Analysis is only as good as the data it’s based on. Is it possible that Francona and the Sox underestimated how much stealing was going to occur, and the psychological impact on the pitchers and Martinez? And how that was going to factor into their run-prevention philosophy, and their own change in offense?

Because, if Vlad is running, then you know every team in the league is going to be looking to do it. Every team. The league will not cut them a break.

Isn’t the idea that having a pitcher focus on the batter and not worry too much about the guy/s on base tied to having a catcher that can even throw runners at minimal rate?

Even in the minors where most pitchers are terrible at holding runners, most catchers still hold down the running game to a certain extent so it is not just a free pass to 2nd of 3rd.

I cannot imagine this theory holds water when you have baserunners be successful at a near 100% success rate.

I don’t doubt that the Sox really did do quantitative research before cooking up this ridiculous theory.

Believe me – it’s very easy to do.

This is a bit difficult to explain – but due to the nature of data in baseball it is extremely easy to arrive at results that are very biased, incorrect or overly dependent on certain assumption.

It is very easy to create intellectual havoc with this data.

  238. LGY - Child Prodigy/GB7's Bestest Buddy April 20th, 2010 at 8:54 pm

Joe, that’s the thing about stats. You can draw it up on paper and it will look all pretty, but that’s never how it plays out in real life. Numbers on a piece of paper can’t account for all the quirks that happen in a game – in other words, they take something of the humanity out of the game. I hate to see baseball reduced to mathematics.

  243. Doreen - GTLU Standings & Rules April 20th, 2010 at 8:55 pm

    CB -

That theory of theirs probably works fine if it’s the average game. But when you have Vlad Guerrero stealing on you, that’s a different thing altogether.

Sure, there’s probably data that shows a guy stealing second is no worse than starting out on second most of the time, so why not let your pitchers focus on the hitter. But it’s got to be a total distraction when an entire team is running against your catchers.

Not to mention just the psychological downer it is for the entire team. it’s a statement of disrespect.

  255. CB April 20th, 2010 at 8:59 pm

“Analysis is only as good as the data it’s based on. ”

    Joe,

This is in general true but the real issue here is much more likely to be that the conclusions one can draw from any analysis are only as good as the methods used to do the analysis.

LGY hit on what is likely to be one of the central assumptions of the statistical models the Sox may have run to come up with this idea:

“I cannot imagine this theory holds water when you have baserunners be successful at a near 100% success rate.”

I doubt the Sox every anticipated a near 100% success rate. That just seems so outlandish that you’d never even put it into the analysis.

Similarly, there’s no good way to quantify how demoralizing this must be for a catcher. As such, that’s not going to enter the analysis either.

Maybe this is all an excuse and the Sox are trying to cover up their mistakes by resorting to ideas, but I could actually see how an analysis that just diverges from reality that could be done that would support this “organizational philosophy.”

  256. William Buckner April 20th, 2010 at 9:01 pm

“It is very easy to create intellectual havoc with this data.”

Oh I know. I just find it insane they would even state that. Whatever instrument they use, there is nothing valid about allowing, or remaining unfocused enough to give away scoring position.

It’s either a biased method of collecting data, questionable analysis of results, or simply a totally flawed hypothesis.

Betsy, the score is 6-2 Texas. And the Sux are dreadful, not because they have an awesome team that isn’t producing. It’s because they have a mediocre offensive roster and their starting pitching hasn’t been what they expected it to be. And they have a so-so bullpen. You do not overtake the Yankees and the Rays – and maybe even Toronto – with that kind of team. You just don’t.

If they are not too far in the cellar by the time Cameron and Ellsbury return, they might be able to have a little better offense.

They are currently 11th in hitting in the AL and 12th in pitching.

PatM, I truly don’t think the beantown folks are in denial at all. If you listen to EEI and you check out the faces in the Suxers dugout, as well as Terry’s, they are totally aware of the disaster their team is. I think there’s more denial on this forum – even if it’s just in a few spots – than there is in beantown.

Do you trust what the press puts out all the time? Well PeteAbe is part of the press. Who knows what’s given to them for public consumption or just to shut them up.

Boston’s top 3 pitchers may be really good, but they still need to score runs. Will they be able to do that? Or will Lester, Buckett, et al lose a bunch of 1-0 or 2-0 games?

Remy just said it should be 2nd and 3rd with one run in because it bounced into the stands and hit a fan, and bounced back out on the field.

  273. GreenBeret7 April 20th, 2010 at 9:18 pm

Right now, the Red Sox and the Cubs have the same problems. Inflated payroll with underperforming players and nothing on the farm ready to help out, along with a vicious fan base. It could get ugly in both places if the Mets and Washington continue to outplay them.

  274. Phil Columbus April 20th, 2010 at 9:19 pm

Is it just me or has Josh Hamilton just gone down the tubes since his display in 08 home run derby at the stadium

  275. CR9 April 20th, 2010 at 9:21 pm

The worst part is, the umpires didnt even get together to discuss whether it hit the fan or not.

I guess that’s umpiring at its finest. They made their decision to intervene to help the Sox season.

Scutaro must have a hot date after the game.

  277. CR9 April 20th, 2010 at 9:22 pm

Even worse is, Josh Reddick gets 2 undeserved RBIs, and that will inflate his status as some kind of valuable prospect

Betsy, the problem is that their top 3, even if they right themselves, won’t win much without any offense to back them up. They’re 11th right now. And while they’re waiting for Jacoby and Mike Cameron to return – whenever that may be – they are losing ground. And their bullpen is questionable.

And here’s the bigger problem – we discussed it here the other night and Sean McAdam and the guys on WEEI talked about it today and they were very clear. The Suxers cannot afford to keep giving up ground when all signs point to extremely potent Yankee and Rays teams this year. Unless they have some miracles on the way, and fast, you don’t make up that kind of ground with a team that is less than excellent, when your competition is as stellar as the Rays and Yanks.

I remember Atlanta having a miserable first half maybe two season ago, and then coming back on fire. But the difference is that they had the players all along, and people were kind of shocked that they couldn’t get off the shneid (sp?) Cleveland several years ago couldn’t win a game and I don’t remember their record but I think they may have lost something like 13 in a row. It was at the beginning of the season. But again in their case, they had a very good team. Eventually they ended up at the top of the pack. You can do that, just as the Yankees did it when they were 9.5 games out in May when RJ was on the team.

The difference is those teams all had the players to do it. This team is falling apart at the seams. The popular feeling in beantown is that Ortiz is taking up precious room at this point. I don’t know that the team feels that way, but the EEI broadcasters, Sean McAdam, and all of the callers seemed to be in unity with that. And they’re all saying the same thing. The Sux do not have a lot of time to make those critical decisions because of the strength of the competition.

I always downplay the Sux. I always believe the Yankees will beat them in the end, no matter what. But this is coming not from my “hatred” of them, it’s coming from witnessing their team that resembles a train wreck.

Josh Redddick is awful, what’s all the fuss with this scrub????

Give it a rest with your idiotic conspiracy theories. It’s not even “your opinion”, it’s never been funny…just stupid.

    GB,

Didn’t realize just how bad the Cubs are. They have really fallen. Loosing to the Mets again tonight.

  287. Rob B April 20th, 2010 at 9:28 pm

There’s a guy here in Vegas on the local ESPN radio affiliate who is from Boston, and thus a major S*x fan. He was saying yesterday that the S*x are done. He doesn’t believe that they will have a losing record, but he acknowledged that there is no way they can compete with the Yankees and the Rays.

If this guy believes it, I have to seriously consider that the S*x are really that bad. He wasn’t even too excited about this team before the season started, but the fan in him of course hoped for the best.

About their top three. I think Beckett and Lester both have the goods; Lester supposedly always gets a slow start. Beckett with Varitek catching him has had good games. I don’t buy into anyone else in their starting rotation. 2 solid out of 5 won’t get you anywhere, even with an offense like Murderer’s Row. 2 solid with a shaky offense? It just doesn’t make it.

    Joe,

Baseball data are comprehensive. You can literally have almost every bit of data involved with the game.

But at the same time all of the data are inherently observational data.

As such it’s prone to bias when one tries to do analyses that move past pure descriptive analyses.

And that’s just not an easy issue to deal with and can lead to very flawed conclusions.

Again, I have no idea what the Sox are truly doing, but they have been very public about their belief that effort to avoid stolen bases is not worth it on net.

  296. randy l. April 20th, 2010 at 9:40 pm

    cb-

the red sox were planning on teams stealing on them the way they did in the past. the problem was that in the past teams weren’t picking on them .

different numbers happen when someone is picked on and can’t do anything about it.

in baseball it’s hard to pick on a defensive position but you can do it with the catcher.

at this point it’s not going to go away.

the red sox are going to have to make a change and probably sooner than later.

  297. GreenBeret7 April 20th, 2010 at 9:41 pm

No matter how much Ortiz is loved or respected by the team and manager, striking out 42% of your 41 at bats is not enough to keep you in the line-up.

  298. pistol pete April 21st, 2010 at 11:24 pm

I know it’s early and I know Tex and Johnson will hit better but boy it’s really hard to watch the two of them hitting about.140 after 13 games. Tex has a pattern of starting badly, Johnson doesn’t. When they stop walking Johnson will he hit then? Yanks are 10-3 with no production from no.s 2 and 3 hitters, scarry.
