Hughes flirts with no-hitter in Yankees win
Phil Hughes was positively dominant tonight. He struck out a career-high 10, walked two and allowed only an infield single through 7.1 nearly no-hit innings. The Yankees gave him a much-deserved 3-1 win, with a save for Mariano Rivera. It was the Yankees sixth straight win, and assured them a win of their first five series for the first time since 1926. Hughes lost the no-hitter when Eric Chavez chopped the ball back to the mound to lead off the eighth inning. It hit off Hughes, who couldn’t find the ball in time to make the play at first.

Great win!
We have three starters than can throw a no hitter every time out.
Kim Jones asked Phil’s parents if they’d ever seen him this dominant and they said yes, in HS and Trenton………..he is the spitting image of his mother. I’m so happy Phil’s pholks got to see him tonight.
It’s too bad about the no-hitter, but really in the scheme of things that’s unimportant. Phil is going to be a tremendous pitcher………I should be going to sleep, but I’m sort of pumped up, lol
Man – if he does that the rest of the year… I’ll be thrilled. Excellent work Hughes!
CC + Swisher (Marquez) + Vazquez (Melky) + Hughes
or
2 surgeries in 2 years 88-91 mph Santana
???
Thank you Cashman for holding your ground vs Hank and the mediots.
I agree – andy cc and Kacy
Phil reminded me of his very first outing for the Yankees. He flirted with a complete game before straining his abs and being pulled. Great game Phil!
Hughes was awesome tonight. The Yankees take another series and can sweep with CC tomorrow. This team is really impressive.
Have a good night all.
Nice hit by Gardy! Beautiful piece of hitting.
Beautiful game by HUGHES!!!! Maturity!!! Class!!! Excellence!!!
Beautiful game by the HP umpire!! Fair game and consistency for both sides!!! I need this guy’s name so I can hope we receive him again!!!
Great game by Phil.
Ahem.

I?ll be the first. Looking for a master-phil outing from Hughes tomorrow. :ugh:

Rumor has it that Ernie is turning snitch and will be ratting the Sesame Street Mafia out for illegally trafficking in sugar cookies.
*************
Check your informant. They were chocolate chip. Oh. Oops
When you think about these past two games it’s just so impressive how good this team is.
The variety of ways they can beat the opposition is really remarkable.
Last night they pummeled the A’s pitching. They forced the A’s pitchers to throw around 180 pitches and scored 7 runs on a night where their 4th stater was going and working on his mechanics.
Tonight their offense was off. They just looked off kilter at the plate for most of the night other than Cano.
And their 5th starter throws an absolutely dominant gem. The A’s really had no shot tonight against Hughes.
And Hughes is still 1 game behind other starters in terms of arm strength. He’s going to continue to get better. Tonight he was much better than his first start.
What a team they have.
That pic was obviously taken right after he gave up the hit; depressing.
Where does this game rank among Phil’s dominant starts ( Texas #1, Texas #2, Detroit, Toronto 2008)? Texas #2 was awfully good…
See, I was “banned” but now I’m back.
The rumors on the street has it that Ernie is turning snitch and will be ratting the Sesame Street Mafia out for illegally trafficking in sugar cookies.
Funny, I was on an A’s board yesterday just to see what they had to say about the series and one guy posted that they thought Phil would be very hittable. Um, no. The scary thing is that Phil still has room to get better.
CC and Cerevelli started this complete game goal. Keep it up guys!
hi everyone
Betsy
Phil’s dad was spot on about Trenton. That’s the pitcher I saw there.

You are going to be repeating those lines all year long!
A-Rod with a 2-4 day. He is on fire.
Hey, Erica….The law doesn’t differentiate between illegal cookies.
This was a very close game, so Phil really couldn’t afford to make any mistakes…great job of keeping cool under pressure.
Phil Gets the BELT!!

Just like he did out the BP. Hes a beast.
we saw tonight why Hughes was always a better young pitcher than both Buchholz & Joba…
Plus fastball command with a ton of movement
The most important pitch is the fastball, both Buchholz and Joba struggle with their fastball command.
Hughes is one of the few pitchers that gets a ton of swings and misses in the zone with his fastball, even at 90-91 mph. That was the reason for the comparisons to Clemens who had the same ability to dominate with just his fastball.
Rich, and yet he wasn’t throwing 96 tonight – a dagger in the heart of velocity hounds. What a FB he has, though – and he was using his curve and cutter as well. He’s a pitcher, not a thrower.
Yay another Yankee series win!!
Good night everyone!

I would have settled for kudos for being able to spell differentiate.
This kid has #1 written all over him….
That’s 5 straight series, matching a long held record.
The fact that it was a close game was a good thing for Phil. Kept him on his toes.
He did look down, and Suzyn said he looked down in the dugout. But he’s probably feeling really good right about now. Man of the Hour.
No glas-ses, sorry.
Goodnight Oakland!

Night Angel, Erica!
Who the hell trolls a site of a team that is now 11-3? Go find an Orioles site to trash.
I’m anxious to see what Hughes does in back to back starts….to see if he can repeat this sort of game…as far as the pitches working and command.
the Yanks have given up 48 runs so far this year
the Red Sox have given up 82
yikes!
Yanks weren’t 8 games over .500 until May 29th last season.
Nick,
Great job with the pix.
What’s the celebration meal?
Caviar? Chateubriand?
Betsy-
This was the best game Hughes has thrown as a pro. His stuff was better – by a good margin – over both of those Texas games.
People are going to compare this to his major league debut because of the no hit innings but Hughes’ stuff was better tonight than it was in that game in Texas.
He’s a much more complete pitcher than he was even at this time last year never mind as a 20 year old.
If he commands his fastball like he did tonight, he’s going to be a #1 even if his change up remains an averagish pitch he keeps in his pocket.
Nick in SF……In & Out time……..Young Master Hughes appears to the real deal….I say he’s a keeper……..Betsy, I applaud you for your composure this evening…..Well done…..
A-Rod!!!!
good night, people!
Time of game? 2 hours and 47 minutes.
CB, thanks! I think so, too…….I try not to think about 2007 because, to be honest, that’s a very painful memory. His stuff is so darn good and you’re right – he’s basically a complete pitcher. I don’t think there is anything as exciting as watching a young pitcher develop before your eyes and Phil is doing that. Eiland must be particulary proud/happy as he’s been with Phil for 3 or 4 years.
I hate to jump all over 2 starts, but how much better does Hughes look than Buchholz?
I know the A’s have a sort of weak lineup…
Loaded up on dollar dogs… will visit In N Out for a shake, however, Hughes deserves it.
Not much reason to break out a pitch when you don’t have to show it to the world until you have to.
According to the Yankees PR Dept, Yanks have now played 162 games since Alex returned last May to a record of 111-51. Nice.
How would yankee fans feel if Hughes had thrown the game he did tonight only he did so in a Twins uniform?
When Cashman decided not to trade Hughes (and thank goodness Andy decided to come back giving Cash an argument for not trading Hughes…) he said at the time during the discussions he felt like he was talking about trading a future Cy Young award winner and it made him sick to think about.
And people guffawed at Cashman for those notions.
Hughes is still far from a finished product. But he threw like a front line starter tonight – the kind of arm that you build a rotation around for a decade.
Pat M, thanks, lol – tonight was one of my better nights. I only lost it a bit when I thought Joba was going to blow it (sorry Joba!). You’re the one who’s always had faith in him – it must feel pretty good to see your predictions coming to fruition.
“Time of game? 2 hours and 47 minutes.”
It takes Phil Hughes to step up and end the tyranny of the yankees “pathetic and embarrassing” state of play!

That doesn’t even count the 20+ games he had to sit last year for manditory rest breaks after he returned
Lost in all this is the brilliant piece of hitting by Gardy to add the insurance!

It makes me ashamed to be a yankee fan, but, “I’ll think about that later. After all, tomorrow is another day”.
“His stuff is so darn good and you’re right – he’s basically a complete pitcher. ”
In the post game with Suzanne Eiland said that this was only the beginning for Hughes.
He did pitch as a complete pitcher tonight.
That said he still has that change up and he should continue to develop it.
Think back to the quality of the change ups he threw frequently in spring training as when he doubled up on Zobrist that first game.
If he is able to command his fastball like he did tonight and mix that kind of change up into what he is doing hitters are really going to have no chance.
His fastball is just so good – pairing that with a change up would create havoc for hitters. They really would become vulnerable across so many dimensions.
He really has a ton of talent.
Nick, do they have date shakes out in CA? I’ve heard they’re very good…
Andy is the gift that keeps on giving, lol. He left for Houston and we got Phil as a compensation pick. Then Andy returns and makes it easier for Cash to hold onto Phil (thanks, Bill Smith!).
One reason I didn’t want Phil traded was the age difference between he and Santana. I didn’t care that he would probably never be as good, that wasn’t the point. I had faith in Phil at a time that many did not; remember that his star had dimmed a great deal – among fans and experts. Cash never lost faith in Phil, not once.
Betsy, I never waived from Phillip being an All-Star pitcher, however it was a road of flat tires and some harsh criticism……..Believe it what you see, it’s ussually right
Johnson is driving me nuts, does he ever ever hit the ball hard. Damon or Matsui are clearly better hitters, better ops’s, more power, more experience, more significantly more playoff experience. This sign made no sense. And Winn, please. Cashman said he needed right handed outfield help and he plucks Winn for $2m. He’s done, it looks like Cashman was the last to find out, no bat speed, ridiculously bad batting right handed, no power. Seems like a nice guy that needs to be retired.
GB
You’re looking for loopholes? 111-51 isn’t good enough for you?
” I never waived from Phillip being an All-Star pitcher, however it was a road of flat tires and some harsh criticism……”
Me neither.
CB, I missed that interview because I’m listening to YES; hopefully CBS will have that up later.
I’m sure Phil really intends to use the change, but I admit that I like that he didn’t throw it just to throw it. I suppose he’ll be asked about it, though. I assume he just didn’t want to mess with a good thing tonight….it will be interesting to hear what, if anything he has to say about it.
He’s coming up on YES in a moment.
If Hughes had to lose the no hitter on an infield single, it’s best that it was back to him and a clean hit. nobody has to deal with the fan/media reaction of losing it for him.
Let’s Go Yankees and Hip Hip Jorge chants on train; A’s fans not amused.

Yes, but, I wanted the “What could have been” record.
Nick,
How about a rousing “Huuuugghhhhessss” chant?
the Force, it runs strong in Young Master Hughes.
He said he didn’t want to get beat on his change up; basically, there are times your stuff is so good you just want to keep doing what you’re doing.
Phil says he thought about getting injured in Texas as the innings went on.
Pat M, it’s been a long and winding road for Phil, but the destination (top of the rotation pitcher) is in sight. I’m just glad that his forearm is ok…….
Poor Phil – that night might never leave him.
Pight now, Gardner has been a “big” gun in the offense. I’ve been very impressed with his last 10 days or so. I’ll be happy to be wrong if this is what NYYs have to look forward to.
M, I love the “Huuuuuuuuuuugggggggghhhhes” chant..
1st Star: Hughes
2nd Star: The dude behind Hughes’ parents during the interview (http://couchwarmers.blogspot.c.....rando.html )
Hard not to think of Texas when he starts a game like this, but, as his success grows, that will be a distant thought. He has a future that only 23 year olds can have.
Did Phil get hit on his non throwing hand???
Or on his throwing hand/wrist/forearm?
when was the last time a #5 won 20g?
“2nd Star: The dude behind Hughes’ parents during the interview ”
BUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA I saw that guy, and was laughing at him!!!!
Ledger_Yankees Girardi says ball struck Hughesa on fleshy part of left forearm. #nyy

Phil looks so happy as AJ is ignoring him, lol
So that’s not bad then, right?
It’s his non throwing forearm.
Wait, nevermind – AJ wouldn’t be ignoring him after the no no was over. Either way, cool pic.
Pat, thanks!
No #5 pitcher has. it’s also about 5 months too early to be thinking about a 20 win season for anybody, much less Phil Hughes. Let him get win #3, first.
No, CR – Phil said he’s fine.

Nick in SF on Bart at In n’ Out-
nice meeting you tonight, hope the 1st row seat i got you wasnt too uncomfortable! Cant wait till tomorrow for the Sweep……..
The Texas start where he left with a no-hitter going was his second career start, not his first. This is going to be a very fun season to follow young Phil. They swung and missed at the fastball. They swung and missed at the curve. They swung and missed at the cutter. Yup, it’s gonna be fun.
Just had nice chat with 3 Japanese Yankees fans.
They miss Matsui.
Chad almost got jacked in Oakland last night. Said he will wait until he gets to his hotel this time to put up a new post.
Hey michelle, likewise and thank you! One stop away and then a quick hop down 280 to celebrate Young Master Philip’s with a milk shake.
Just needs to stay healthy. When Phil’s been healthy, he’s been good.

mlb.tv is coming to the ps3!
I ‘m sticking on a 13-7 like season, with an era of 3.75………There’s going to be many no-hit ops for him during his career…….Phil Hughes unchained for 2010 ……It all starts now…..
PHIIIIIIIL!!!!!
0 errors for the Yanks in the past 12 games…..
CB,
I agree that this is one of Hughes most dominating looking starts in his career, but I disagree that it was better than his first Texas start. That start was ridiculous, because the Rangers did not get a ball out of the infield until the 5th.
And he was doing that with a change up instead of a cutter.
I guess I would say its a push on which one is better , but obviously this one was better result wise.
i didnt make any team picks this season, the only prediction i made was that phil would win 15. he’s off to a great start.
When your number 5 starter has a performance like this, it means this team is dam good.
Godspeed Young Master Hughesss!!!!
I’m a Promise Keeper for Phil:

Hughes was great tonight best game I think he has ever pitched in the majors. Yankees right now have been getting dominant performances from 4 of there starters. Gardner driving in the extra insurance run was huge, Mo was a little shakey today. Yanks just need to keep winning series.
”0 errors for the Yanks in the past 12 games…..”
Wait a minute I thought the run preventors, oops I mean red sox had a better defense than the yanks, hmmmmmmmmmm…………
Oooooh spooky, I was talking witha girl with a #51 jersey on the way to BART and now I’m guest #51… Ooooooooooooh.
Face what gets lost was his outing last April vs, Tigers in Detroit……He was called up earlier that day, and just rifles his way through a very good Tiger team,,,,,Left after 7 if I recall……He’s making up for lost time, if this continues, it could prove to be A very interesting summer
