Yankees drop series finale in Oakland
CC Sabathia pitched a complete game and Alex Rodriguez started the team’s first triple play since 1968, but the Yankees lost to the Athletics 4-2 this afternoon in Oakland. Marcus Thames and Mark Teixeira hit home runs, but the Yankees couldn’t muster much more against Dallas Braden. Kurt Suzuki’s three-run home run in the first inning made the difference.

I’m still giddy over the triple play, I don’t even care that much that they lost. LOL
Halladay is better than CC and it isin’t even close.
Halladay hasn’t walked 6 guys this season. CC did today.
LOL The game is over already? I’ll take 2/3 anytime – on the road? Absolutely. CC was due for an “eh” game, but even then he battled. I’m not concerned about the offense, but they aren’t going into Anaheim against a hot Angels team in the best of shape. That said, this team almost always finds a way to get it done; I’m surprised when they lose.
I don’t get why CC had to pitch a complete game; why not let Roberston throw an inning ?
Oh well, we scored less than 3 runs for the first time all season IIRC, it happens. Move on.
BloggingBombers Yankees lose 4-2. Time of game: 2:07. Joe West must be proud.
So fast.
Chad, I guess you didn’t believe the Yanks could win: you must had this post written up before the start of the ninth inning.
CC needs a medicine ball for that stomach
this theoretical trade sounds pretty good now:
Halladay for Montero + Hughes + Joba + Melancon + Austin Jackson + Phil Coke
Oh well, it’s one loss. But please, get Nick Johnson off of this team. He is truly awful.
In case people are misinterpreting my comments…
I did not say that CC was better than Roy.
I said I would take CC over Roy, based on age and less injury concerns!
Let me guess. Another walkoff tonight for the red sox?
When will such madness end? Who will they play next?
getting tired of Nick Johnson, and it’s only week 2
im so over this loss it happens
yep me too
Well, at least we won the series. Next stop…?
One pitch made the game but there’s some upside even so.
C.C. gives the team a rested bullpen for the L.A. series and the team has yet to lose a series this year.
Root for the White Sox and Rangers tonight and nothing changes.
I don’t think the Yankees have to “search for positives” out of this game. It’s not like they’re a losing team that’s looking for silver linings.
They lost.
Suzuki owns Sabathia and Sabathia didn’t have his best command today. End of story.
Here’s the box score from the Yankees last Triple Play. From the legendary pitcher Dooley Womack to Bobby Cox at third to Mickey Mantle at first.

Oh well the yanks cant win them all. The triple play was great nice job by A-Rod. Good news is Teix might be coming out of his slump.

———————————————————————————————————————-
Yeah, and there’s a very logical reason for that. Nobody likes to remember when they was a kid and saw their dog get run over.
Johnson still has a very good obp. There is no need to panic and move him out of the 2 hole. He is a career 271 hitter I’m sure he will get it going.
This game was a great illustration of how much impact that stadium has on games and how deceiving the ERAs of Oakland pitchers can be.
The yanks would have hit multiple home runs today in almost any other park. Teix himself would have had a multi-homer game in another stadium. His swing is particularly hurt by that park.
The offense looked not so hot today but a lot of that was related to the context. They’ll be better in Anaheim.
Let’s hope Tex and Johnson break out of their slumps.
On a positive note the yankees starting rotation continues to give them quality and length. 4 runs over 8 innings – there’s really nothing wrong with that. The yankees win 90% of the games they would play when a pitcher puts up that kind of performance.
But today just happened to be one of those 1 in 10 days were they come out on the wrong end of the stick.
GB7
That was a rough time to be a Yankee fan. It wasn’t all that bad not to see them on TV here that much.
As long as the Yankees keep on taking series that’s all that matters.
Why use the bullpen when you don’t have to? CC’s pitch count was fine.
The pen will get used enough this year. A full day for everybody helps rather than hurts.
Win another series and that’s all that matters despite the best efforts of the trolls.
I’ll take 11-4 to start the season anytime.
The Red Sox only ordered a CT scan for Ellsbury today. 4 hairline fractures. I guess the 2 x-rays were clean.
Francona said it was standard protocol “You treat the symptoms,” he said, “and once you’re not able to play, go back and do the CT scan.”
Can you imagine Yankee fans reaction if this happened to one of our players? As it is, the fans don’t trust the Yankees very much. lol.
I kid about Dooley womack, though. He was actually a pretty good relief pitcher for the Yankees, but, Lord that was a bad team. Oddly, the last time the Yanks turned a triple play, they lost 4-3.

Easy for you to say. For those of us who had money on a 159 win season, today was a disaster of epic proportions.
Am I allowed to look for positives?
You can’t ever win ‘em all, but win or lose, the ballpark’s the place to be ‘cos you never know what you’re gonna see!
The results of this game won’t matter in the long run — heck, they don’t matter in the short run either — but there was still a magic moment for Yankee fans to enjoy.

Good points, CB. I said this before the series, but I despise Oakland Stadium (or whatever it’s called). LOL My mother just called the loss “terrible”…… I don’t think so. I’m surprisingly relaxed about it; usually I’d be upset, lol. Hey, they took 2/3; it’s not like the Yanks were never going to lose again.
I just figured they’d let D-Rob get some work…
SJ, I wondered about that only because we want to keep the pen sharp if possible…….It’s not a big deal, though.
Buchholz has a 1.80 ERA. No way should be pitching for her job…. Wakefield looks shot and should be the one to go if they make a change.
But if they want to keep Wakie in there instead, fine by me.
The Sox are in some major trouble…
M, he hasn’t been that good, but on the other hand, Buchholz hasn’t pitched that badly – not to the point where he’s pitching for his job. If he’s going to be developed, they need to let him keep starting.
Ledger_Yankees Braden just told reporters that he yelled at ARod for jogging over the pitcher’s mound. #nyy
I thought Tex’s fly out in the 9th was a HR. It sounded really nice right off the bat. I couldn’t believe that did not go out.
That ERA is misleading. He did not pitch well in KC despite giving up only 2 runs and although the 4 runs against Tampa were unearned, he’s the one that put them on base. I agree, though – it should be Wakefield pitching for his job.

I’m upset about this loss because we are facing one of the hottest teams in baseball this weekend.
And our worst pitcher is going one day and the next day we’re facing Piniero, sinkerballer (not the type of pitcher we want to face when most of our hitters are not in a groove).
Burnett has to win tomorrow vs. Santana, who is hittable. The 2 next days are question marks.
Tex is close to breaking out? Nick?
If he continues to take the two sealers in for called strike threes and not make an adjustment, he’s on borrowed time in the two hole.
Kevin Long has to get on his butt about making that adjustment. He’s a better hitter than he has shown.

Funny post game comments by Arod. Does a nobody like Braden really think a superstar is going to care what he has to say? Please..
I wouldn’t be surprised if Alex was trying to rattle him a bit.
To be fair A-Rod doesn’t exactly have the best reputation for baseball etiquette (slapping the ball out of Arroyo’s glove, shouting HA in Toronto, fighting Varitek with a mask on, etc.)
I have no idea what he did or if its a big deal, but I wouldn’t be so quick to say he did nothing at all…

1) The Angels are one of the hottest teams in baseball. The Yankees are THE hottest team in baseball.
2) Our “worst” pitcher is better than most of the league.
3) All of their pitchers are “hittable”. And every day is a question mark. That’s why they play the games.
It looked like Arod was wearing his world series ring in the post game.
just saw braden’s tirade against alex on mlb network.
the announcers there , leiter, ripken etc had a good time with it poking fun at braden’s annoyance at alex crossing the mound.
all i was thinking watching braden talk is he must not know that the major leagues has a full dental plan- everything’s all paid for.
maybe he was just mad because arod has good teeth.
Alex handled it very professionally basically saying he had no idea what Braden was talking about.
He did make sure to get a little dig in there though saying: this is a guy who has won what a handful of games (paraphrased)
where can i find postgame comments from both sides online??
Obviously, Braden will one day don a Red Sox uniform.
He is a piece of carcillo who would fit right in on that hartnelling dirty team.
What a real piece of work.
He’s probably angry that ARod finally got his RING!
Unfortunately, we have to go back to the Grand Canyon in July.
The trick to winning there, is not walking people and not giving up HR. It definitely is a difficult place to score. We only scored yesterday because of back-to-back triples (what are the odds?) and a flare by Gardner (what are the odds?).
We had some baserunners, I would’ve tried some small ball.

Alex stole Tek’s mask?
Apparently Alex crossed the mound on his way back to 1st base after Cano’s cue shot that just went foul……….I thought it was rather funny watching Alex’s hand wave as if he was shushing a gnat away
CC pitched poorly (for him) but he kept hem in the game and gave them a chance to win and gave the pen a day off. The Yanks just didn’t score runs today…you can’t win them all…winning 2 of 3 puts a team on pace to win 108 games.
I kinda agree with SJ on NJ but I think he will be ok, as he said he is too good a hitter to not make adjustments.
“”"”"Oh well, it’s one loss. But please, get Nick Johnson off of this team. He is truly awful.”"”
I’m so thrilled Godzilla was thrown under the bus because of his knees. Maybe NJ will play one more game than Hidecki and bat 30 less rbi, 75 points less average, 10 less HR oh but he will walk 1 time a game lol. Cashman really blew this one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i think you have that a little backwards.
that was all on varitek who had no business being up the line.

Doreen,
Probably etiquette for the pitchers to avoid the batter’s boxes, too.
Great response from A-Rod I never seen that from someone with only a handful of wins.
Translation know your role little boy.
There is no etiquette.
The only etiquette Braden was interested in was trying to start trouble with a Yankee, because Braden looks like a petty dirtbag (who will one day don a Sox uni)

Does A-rod have a habit of licking his lips? If so, Braden could be referring to that.

I may be in the minority here but I think Braden should be suspended.
Threatening someone when you have the ability to serious injure that person is completely inexcusable. And it sends a violent message to young pitchers. This is professional baseball, not beer league softball.

Thanks! If wanting to taste ARod, Jeter, or Tom Broddy, makes me sick, then I dont want to be “not sick”!
I think it remains to be seen about Johnson being on “borrowed time” in the #2 hole.
Girardi has never messed with Teixeira during his struggles and didn’t mess with A-Rod when he struggled in June and July of last year.
Granted, Johnson is no Teixeira or A-Rod but Girardi usually has a lot of patience with the vets and knows Johnson will start hitting eventually.
I don’t see Johnson losing his #2 slot anytime soon.

That’s his first problem right there.

A-Rod shocked to be yelled at by guy with only handful of wins. Braden points out he only has 3, not a handful. “Do the math.”
I’m starting to really dislike Braden

For old tme HOF pitcher, Mordecai “Three Finger ” Brown, 3 would have been a handful of wins.
a lot of players cross the mound on the way in to the dugout. as far as “baseball ettiquette” it wouldn’t rattle a pitcher as much as throwing at the batter without repercusions to the pitcher.
