WEATHER: We’ve had three gorgeous days in Southern California, and today might be the nicest.

Joe Girardi met with the media a little later than usual, so I’ll just throw the pregame notes here in the game post.

• “We’re going with a more right-handed lineup today,” Girardi said. That’s part of the reason for starting Cervelli at catcher and leaving Posada at DH. Girardi also said he liked the idea of essentially giving Posada three days away from catching. “It does keep him fresh,” Girardi said.

• Girardi said “there’s always a worry” when both catchers are in the lineup, but the concern wasn’t enough to keep him from doing it. The emergency catcher is Ramiro Pena, who occasionally catches between innings. That said, Girardi said he has been “impressed” when he’s seen A.J. Burnett squat to catch some pitches during pregame warmups. Burnett caught when he was younger, but there’s no chance he’ll actually catch in a game.

• Nick Johnson said his sore lower back is “a lot better.” He won’t take any swings today and the Yankees will see how he feels after taking some swings on Tuesday. Girardi said he does not consider Johnson a pinch hit option.

• The Yankees still plan to send Chan Ho Park to Tampa tomorrow.

• Brett Gardner has been hitting pretty well lately, but Girardi said he wanted to give every outfield a day off during this West Coast swing and Gardner had played every other day.

• Another reason to go with Marcus Thames over Gardner: Thames is a career .412 hitter with a .706 slugging percentage against Kazmir.

• The Yankees will meet the President tomorrow, and Derek Jeter compared walking into the Oval Office to walking into George Steinbrenner’s office.

• The Yankees were passing around an autographed jersey that seemed to be the one they’ll give to President Obama tomorrow. It was No. 27, not No. 44.

• Dave Winfield was in the clubhouse this morning and sat talking to Jeter for quite a while. It was amazing how many Yankees Winfield seemed to have a personal relationship with including Thames, Curtis Granderson, Mariano Rivera, Joba Chamberlain, Andy Pettitte and CC Sabathia. He was Jeter’s favorite player when Jeter was a kid.

UPDATE, 4:00 p.m.: Robinson Cano’s hot start has kind of masked Jorge Posada’s hot start. Posada just sent a rocket to center field for a two-run homer (after Kazmir plunked Cano).

UPDATE, 4:07 p.m.: Looked like a good call at first base. Jeter beat the play and drove in a run with a fielder’s choice. It’s 3-0 Yankees.

UPDATE, 4:41 p.m.: That was Abreu’s 10th career home run against Vazquez. That’s easily the most he’s hit off a single pitcher. The most he’s hit off anyone else is four.

UPDATE, 4:58 p.m.: The Angels have pulled within one with a single, hit batter, single here in the fourth. They aren’t hitting Vazquez hard, but they’ve done enough to make it a 3-2 game.

UPDATE, 5:01 p.m.: A walk to Napoli has loaded the bases with one out in the fourth. That sent Dave Eiland to the mound for a brief chat.

UPDATE, 5:02 p.m.: You’re always sacrificing some defense when you start Thames in left field, and he certainly didn’t play that ball especially well.

UPDATE, 5:04 p.m.: Wow. Quick hook on Vazquez. Boone Logan coming in to face Bobby Abreu in the fourth. Vazquez actually looked OK until this inning. He was at 78 pitches.

UPDATE, 5:24 p.m.: Solid three outs from Logan, but the Morales single will chase him from the game. Here comes Aceves.

UPDATE, 5:32 p.m.: Cano was not happy about being hit by a pitch in the second inning, but he seemed to really enjoy that home run to right. Three of his five home runs this year have come off Kazmir.

UPDATE, 5:35 p.m.: Angels bring in a right-handed reliever. Yankees bring in Gardner to pinch hit for Thames.

UPDATE, 5:58 p.m.: Aceves has done his part. Now here comes Marte. Five up, five down for Aceves.

UPDATE, 6:00 p.m.: Robertson is getting loose in the pen.

UPDATE, 6:07 p.m.: An intentional ball to Morales. Then some confusion on the field. Then Torii Hunter stole third with two outs. Then Morales clobbered a 3-0 pitch for a three-run home run. Something was terribly wrong that entire at-bat. It’s now 8-4 Angels, Robertson has sat down and Mitre is getting loose.

This seems like it’s going to be an on-going thing with Nick, unfortunately.

I would love to see AJ catch for an inning, lol.

Aww, I love Winny; it’s nice to see that he’s got good relationships with several Yankees.

  2. Erin April 25th, 2010 at 3:04 pm

Is it wrong for me to want to see how AJ looks behind the plate??? LOL

I can’t wait to see pictures from their White House visit tomorrow :)

  3. Paul April 25th, 2010 at 3:06 pm

Derek Jeter compared walking into the Oval Office to walking into George Steinbrenner’s office.

    LOL

The Boss must have laughed about that one

  4. Dina Temple-Raston April 25th, 2010 at 3:08 pm

Even though the orioles are leading 1-0. The chances of them winning is still 0%.

It’s poignant to see the Boss in that, though.

For Scranton, about the only ones hitting right now, only the top 3 are hitting. after 2 outs and Corona walked, Russo, Curtis and Nunez all singled to score 2 runs. Russo is 2-3 (triple), Curtis is 3-4 and Nunez is 4-4 with 2 doubles. Russo has scored twice Curtis otwice and an RBI, and Nunez has 3 RBI.

    5-3 Scranton

  13. Doreen - GTLU Standings & Rules April 25th, 2010 at 3:19 pm

    Phil -

    I never saw that. Hysterical!

Was it a real commercial or just for Comedy Central?

  14. CR9 April 25th, 2010 at 3:20 pm

And after a solid outing from Hernandez, and barely any support from his offense, and roided 3rd baseman, the game looks in danger.

Good job today Hernandez. You battled all day, and ur team didnt pick u up. Dont worry, though, just wait another week til your offense is facing one of the best pitchers in the game, CC Sabathia (if they face him)

  15. GreenBeret7 April 25th, 2010 at 3:20 pm

    correction: 5-4 Scranton

  16. CR9 April 25th, 2010 at 3:21 pm

Why doesnt William Shatner put in Matt Albers again???

If you want to lose to the Red Sox, that’s the easiest way to do it.

    WooooHooooo

Welcome to the new Orioles, the same as the old Orioles, or WORSE!!

They’re on pace for 18 losses to the Sox this year!! WoooHoooo!!

“Derek Jeter compared walking into the Oval Office to walking into George Steinbrenner’s office.”

He’s a funny guy, that Cap’n. Droll, you might say.

Reminds me of the story about Jim Thorpe and King Gustav V of Sweden at the 1912 Olympics. Handing Thorpe his gold medal, King Gustav proclaimed: “You, sir, are the greatest athlete in the World.” Thorpe is reported to have replied, “Thanks, King.”

I don’t know which was funnier – losing the kid or losing the you-know-what! Liked the touch with snipping one of the mastercard circles. ;)

  28. CR9 April 25th, 2010 at 3:30 pm

    Dina

They exist for a perfectly good reason. To help the Red Sox :D

    CR9:

I can’t just turn it on and off. I’m not a machine, you know! ;)

Although I did notice Loopy has rekindled his romance with Jose Reyes again. I wish those two would just run off with each other already and get married in one of those states that has legalized columnist-player marriage.

Their bullpen is just historically bad at this point. Another blown lead against Boston.

  35. Doreen - GTLU Standings & Rules April 25th, 2010 at 3:35 pm

We’re looking at a possible trip to Cali this summer. If you had the choice, would you go to see the Dodgers in their stadium or the stadium in Anaheim?

(The Yankees are not in town).

I figure SF is the better one to see over Oakland.

  36. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 25th, 2010 at 3:36 pm

The Sox are better than the O’s – what did people expect?

  37. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 25th, 2010 at 3:37 pm

I can see that if the Yankees don’t sweep the O’s this board is going to get ugly.

If I’m Loopy’s wife, I’m starting to get more than a little concerned. This turgid prose about the hyperthyroidic shortstop for the Mets combined with Loopy’s unhealthy, but financially rewarding, fascination with boys who play travel team sports? Hello, Mrs. L? Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt, girlfriend.

  41. BD (Boston Dave) - NJ walk tracker = 18 April 25th, 2010 at 3:38 pm

The Sox are and can be better than the Orioles.

    Their problem?

They’re not nearly as good as the Yankees or Rays.

And in the AL East, that’s a BIG problem.

  42. Matt April 25th, 2010 at 3:38 pm

I don’t know if anyone has noticed, but Kazmir has definitely changed his delivery this year.

He never used to bring his hands over his head like that, he used to have a long and deliberate windup.

  43. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 25th, 2010 at 3:38 pm

BD, didn’t they have innings limits on Porcello? How many did he end up throwing last year?

  44. stuckey April 25th, 2010 at 3:38 pm

“It’s very similar except that one was a capitalist and one was a socialist.”

Actually, given the revenue sharing and payroll tax of MLB, George Steinbrenner is in fact a prominent leading member of a socialist organization…

    Just sayin’… :-)

That just puts a smile on my face even though the Sox did win the series. I just start laughing anytime I see Dennis Leary talking about the Sox on a talk show like Mike and Mike, thinking about his missing …

  46. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 25th, 2010 at 3:40 pm

BD, it’s too early to say that, don’t you think?

I also don’t get why people think the Yankees are going to dominate when the Rays aren’t going anywhere. Let’s say the Sox don’t really contend – this is going to be a back and forth battle all year between the Rays and Yankees.

  47. Carl April 25th, 2010 at 3:42 pm

  50. LGY April 25th, 2010 at 3:45 pm

    23 pitches already for Kazmir.

Does not look like the new delivery is going to help him last more than 5 innings.

    Re: Sox and Dennis Leary

One of the funniest video clips I have ever seen was one in which Dennis Leary visited the broadcast booth at Fenway a few years ago. He was talking about Youkilis and when he was told that Youkilis was Jewish, he went on a tirade calling out Mel Gibson for his anti-semitic remarks and throwing in some Youkilis love … I just looked quickly in youtube and can’t find it. Sox fan he may be, but he’s funny.

  53. Angel - In an Empire State of Mind April 25th, 2010 at 3:48 pm

    Apparently not, Rob.

I get that is was a bad collision and they’re worried about their player, but honestly its really starting to wear on me already.

  54. Carl April 25th, 2010 at 3:48 pm

might be a long day with this ump behind the plate.

  55. CB April 25th, 2010 at 3:48 pm

Mark Teixeira is a notoriously slow starter as we all know.

But at times, slow starts to the season can attract more attention than they do later on in the season.

You have a slump later on and you have prior production to fall back on. You do it at the start of the season there’s a lot of zeroes to deal with.

But if you look at Tex’s entire career this is almost the worst he’s ever been for an extended period of time.

SG over at RLYB took a look at all of the worst 17 game stretches over Tex’s career – this “run” he’s on is the second worst 17 game spread he’s ever had.

The only time he’s had a worse 17 game stretch during any point in the season was back in 2003 when he was a rookie. And that took place in August of that season.

So after 10% of the season being done, this is the worst start Tex has ever had to a season.

Last year’s only the 6th worst 17 game stretch.

His swing looked a little better that last at bat – but he’s been better from the right hand side at baseline. He’s shown some signs before but then keeps regressing.

He’ll break out and when he does the offense will really be something. But right now he’s started worse than he ever has.

@Doreen: I would opt for Dodger Stadium over Anaheim, all things being equal. I think it’s the oldest non-Fenway/Wrigley stadium left and it has a nice early-60′s feel to it. The biggest downside is that traffic can be pretty annoying getting in and out. But I think it’s a better experience than the Big A and beach balls are less annoying than rally sticks and thunder monkeys.

It’s pretty remarkable how they were held up as the model for developing young pitching over this winter again and again. Often Porcello was the guy who was the contrast to how Joba was handled.

This past winter was too early to tell what was going to happen to porcello’s arm. It was always this season that would be the likely tell tale sign.

  139. BD (Boston Dave) - NJ walk tracker = 18 April 25th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

    “He’s hitting .250 today. No?”

    ————–

I will admit he looks a little better at the plate. He’s laying off some breaking pitches that he was swinging at earlier in the season.

And he’s likely guessing more to try to catch up to fastballs.

His avg has to rise soon but whether he can hit better than .200 for the season is a legit question.

  140. CB April 25th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Thames has done everything one could reasonably expect. He’s never going to be a good defensive player but he is really filling his role very well.

He was the last guy signed with a shot at the 25 man roster. He didn’t cost much – they are getting as much as they possibly could have hoped for.

Meanwhile Jaime Hoffman is hitting .254 with a .262 OBP in Albequerque AAA which is one of the most conducive environment to hitting in all of professional baseball.

  141. RS April 25th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Unfortunately, in this ballpark I can’t rest until the Yankees have a 6 run lead in the 7th inning or later.

This past winter was too early to tell what was going to happen to porcello’s arm. It was always this season that would be the likely tell tale sign.

To be fair to the Tigers, they did a good job. He pitched 125 innings in the minors. The next season he only threw more than 100 pitches 4 times, and that was at the end of the season.

He went above his prior innings by 50, but for the most part he wasn’t throwing a ton of pitches.

I prefer that method to the Yankees.

  144. Brandon's Awesome (B/c my AWESOMENESS crosses Braden's mound) April 25th, 2010 at 4:07 pm

Did Vazquez always have such bad command?

  156. CB April 25th, 2010 at 4:10 pm

    Doreen-

I’d favor Dodger stadium. It’s got so much history and it’s a really nice spot to watch a ball game from. It’s sort of detached from downtown so it has this feeling like the whole area is dedicated to baseball.

That said whether you try to go see the dodgers or Angels really depends on where you are located. They really aren’t very close to each other in terms of driving time. And driving time is king in southern california.

If you’re staying in organge county I’d go see the Angels. If you’re in Los Angeles proper it’s probably easier to see the dodgers.

If for instance you’re staying on the west side of los angeles, getting out to Anaheim is extremely painful.

  157. BD (Boston Dave) - NJ walk tracker = 18 April 25th, 2010 at 4:11 pm

    RS,

Okajima gave up a leadoff single and almost gave up a double to follow (diving catch by Hall)

The Sox just don’t have any other options. They have been using Papelbon every day lately so they likely want Bard to close today.

Ramirez has been terrible and they can’t trust Delcarmen yet. They just don’t have the arms.

About Hoffman – Ok, Somebody or somebodies took a calculated risk and it didn’t work out. It happens, even with the best thought out decisions. That’s why Thames was signed, as insurance. Sometimes you have to use those insurance policies. Outside of losing Brian Bruney for nothing, nothing lost. And Bruney isn’t exactly lights out for Washington, either. (And I’m rooting for him.)

  169. CB April 25th, 2010 at 4:15 pm

    Jerkface-

I didn’t say they did a bad job. But on the whole the Tigers weren’t doing all of that to “develop” porcello. They were doing it because they were desperate for a starter.

Under the circumstances they did a good job.

At the same time I’d guess Porcello’s innings total from the minors is a bit misleading. He got a ton of quick outs in the minors. He didn’t strike many hitters out at all and didn’t walk anyone.

Those were very stress free innings he threw in the minors.

All I’m saying is that they did take a calculated risk and this past winter was too early to say that it “worked.” It may or may not have. It’s too early to know – but so far this season it doesn’t look great.

  190. Jerkface April 25th, 2010 at 4:22 pm

    BD,

The 2 games I watched him pitch (vs the angels and vs the royals) his stuff was good. I don’t think his ‘arm’ is tired. He threw some insane fastballs with a ton of movement vs LAA. Just checking on fangraphs real quick, his pitches are all around the same speed or slightly faster.

It could just be an adjustment thing. I agree with CB that how they handled Porcello will come to a head this year, probably towards the end of the summer.

  191. CB April 25th, 2010 at 4:22 pm

    Doreen-

In that case if you can see a weekend day game at Dodger stadium it won’t be too bad.

If you are trying to see a weekday or even weekend night game what I’d do is to leave midday from where you’re staying and make an afternoon of it in downtown LA. Go see the Disney Concert hall (it’s goregeous), go see the cathedral, go visit little Tokyo, go to the museum, etc. Have dinner downtown and then head over to the ball park.

As long as you beat rush hour (which can start at 2pm on a weekday) and get into downtown you’ll be fine.

I don’t know if you are a music fan, but if you have the opportunity to go to the Diseny Concert hall for a performance try to do so. The building is just spectacular and the sound inside is beautiful.

That second strike to Wood is the best fastball I’ve seen Javy throw this year. Stayed on top, ball was down and had a little sinking action. Maybe hes getting there.

  198. CB April 25th, 2010 at 4:26 pm

    BD-

I thought he looked ok when I watched him. He’s just giving up a lot of base hits. That happens with a ground ball pitcher however, especially over small samples.

I’m not worried about him per se – more something to look out for. It was always clear that it was this season that would be more indicative.

Cole Hamels is an interesting case. I think the work load really did hurt him. But more than that I think the league has adjusted to him and he doesn’t have a good answer back.

His breaking ball just isn’t very good.

I was out for awhile, so what happened with Kazmir? He hit Cano on purpose?

I said in ST that it was completely unfair to judge Thames, a veteran, on a few at bats in ST. He’s a professional hitter and, IMO, he deserved some time in the regular season to show what he could do. Now, I don’t think he should have PH for NJ yesterday, but that’s neither here nor there.

Making decisions to pass on Halladay, Tex, CC, Lackey, Figgins – that’s a lot of talent to pass on. I know they’re in the AL West, but it doesn’t make their team any better.

Leiter said something interesting during the Phil/Angels game last week. He said that Wood was always very highly regarded and considered very talented, but there comes a point when a prospect is not a prospect anymore and has to perform. We discussed this at length one night, but it must be very hard to judge real prospects in the PCL given how the ball carries…..

  237. CB April 25th, 2010 at 4:38 pm

Vazquez is still out there right now trying to pitch in reverse. Hopefully it’s still an issue of him building up arm strength but he’s not effectively pitching off his fastball.

And in this game you can tell he’s concerned about throwing the Angels change ups per the scouting report.

    Betsy – I think you’re right.

Seems like Abreu always hits Vazquez well, from the stats.

Looking for the silver lining, he had a nice comeback to K Torii Hunter. He really hasn’t done much in these two series vs the Yanks. Coupled with the problems he had in the field in YS, is his age (35) catching up to Hunter?

If that’s true, the Angels are suddenly depending on older players – Hunter, Abreu, and Matsui. That’s a lot of wishing and praying, if you ask me.

    blake-

Abreu was sitting breaking ball on that pitch. Javy Hung and Bobby didn’t miss. Abreu doesn’t hit many that hard and that far. He was on that pitch the entire way.

It was a solo so it’s not that bad but it wasn’t a good sign either.

Of course Hunter then proceeded to go went there swinging from his heels so that was strange…

  257. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 25th, 2010 at 4:45 pm

Carl, of course, but it’s one thing to be getting hit, another for the FB to be several MPH below where it should be (unless he has a habit of getting off to bad starts, which maybe he does).

Joe, if I recall, the Jays wanted the Angels to include this pitcher – I forget his name, but he’s one of their top 5 prospects. Also, Doc would not have approved – he wanted to go to a team that trains in Florida. His first choice was the Phillies.

  263. LGY April 25th, 2010 at 4:48 pm

The Angels hit changeups well but that does not mean you cannot ever throw them. Can still work them in to keep hitters off balance once in a while especially in AJ’s case when his curve was not working.

  264. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 25th, 2010 at 4:48 pm

It must feel good to throw FB like Phil did that night; there must be a sense of exhilaration almost when the ball comes out of your hands… Players seem to know right away when a pitcher is going to be tough. In one of the recaps of that game (from an A’s perspective), it mentioned that Chavez knew that Phil was going to be tough because the ball was jumping out of his hands.

  265. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 25th, 2010 at 4:49 pm

LGY, that’s true – and Phil threw about 5 or 6 of them to the Angels. AJ hasn’t had a good curve all year, so he had to do something.

  319. CB April 25th, 2010 at 4:59 pm

Cervelli is a very good defensive catcher and he is lauded as such.

But I have to say – he is exceedingly busy behind the plate.

That last pitch Javy threw was actually a strike over the inside corner. But the pitch did badly miss it’s spot.

Cervelli for whatever reason set up inside then shifted outside (as it was obvious he would) and then Javy wound up throwing the ball almost exactly to the spot where cervelli initially was.

Moving the target like that might help with Napoli a catcher up at bat but it’s distracting for both the pitcher and umpire.

Ya gotta wonder if it’s worth having Thames in there. These balls always find him! He should have caught that.

Just hope Kazmir really has not settled in.

  321. Laura - My Pretend Boyfriend plays for BAL April 25th, 2010 at 5:00 pm

    Thank God, a new pitcher.

  322. Hit Girl April 25th, 2010 at 5:00 pm

    this one is over

    and vazquez is a bust

  323. CR9 April 25th, 2010 at 5:00 pm

    Laura

I still think trading for Javy was a good idea. He has to turn this around at some point.

  324. Rob B (Never a Gardner doubter) April 25th, 2010 at 5:00 pm

Put Vazquez in as long man and Mitre in the rotation.

No, I’m not serious, but I’m pretty angry right now.

  325. rconn23 April 25th, 2010 at 5:00 pm

One batter too late. Gotta pull a guy who can’t throw strikes and when he does, they get ripped.

Alfredo Aceves is apparently a figment of the imagination.

  326. Matt April 25th, 2010 at 5:00 pm

Useless umpire misses 2 pitches that have been strikes all game to walk the bases loaded, and then Thames botches what should have also been the 3rd out of the inning.

It is unbelievable how useless these umpires are. They have turned around this entire game for the Angels by squeezing Vazquez like no other. Major League Baseball needs to really clamp down on these guys and use QuestTec to punish ones who consistently squeeze pitchers in certain situations.

  327. nature boy April 25th, 2010 at 5:00 pm

at least cashman won’t make the mistake of bringing back a softie again.

  328. Todd April 25th, 2010 at 5:00 pm

How the heck did this bum strike out so many guys in the NL….Mr Innings Eater..LOL

  329. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 25th, 2010 at 5:01 pm

CR, I asked that because you asked if pitchers’ mechanics changed once they put on pinstripes; I took you literally.

Javy’s next start is at home and he’s going to be booed……..

  330. Hit Girl April 25th, 2010 at 5:01 pm

    a whole season of javy

this is going to be amusing, to say the least

  331. The Ohta Faction April 25th, 2010 at 5:01 pm

At this point, we have to just hope that Javy remains a Type A free agent.

  332. Jerkface April 25th, 2010 at 5:01 pm

Cervelli for whatever reason set up inside then shifted outside (as it was obvious he would) and then Javy wound up throwing the ball almost exactly to the spot where cervelli initially was.

Almost every catcher does this. Lets not use it as an excuse to knock Cervelli.

  333. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 25th, 2010 at 5:01 pm

Should Thames have gotten that ball?

  334. Fran (the original) and OPPC member April 25th, 2010 at 5:01 pm

Not a good effort by Vazquez, but Thames play didn’t help either.

  335. Patrick April 25th, 2010 at 5:01 pm

This ump is terrible he’s been squeezing javy all day.

And gardner catches that ball easily, Thames is horrible, he’s missed several easy plays this year

  336. SJ44 April 25th, 2010 at 5:01 pm

Like I said, you could see it coming.

Take him out now or he will give up 10 this inning.

Just an awful performance by Vazquez.

Stayed three hitters too late with and he flushed the lead away.

He’s now officially the first problem of the season.

May have to get Mitre or Ace ready to replace him in the rotation if this keeps up.

  337. baseballfab April 25th, 2010 at 5:01 pm

    Javy REALLY sucks.

Oh Well, at least the Sox suck this year also.

  338. RS April 25th, 2010 at 5:01 pm

Like I said, a 3-0 lead means nothing to me in this ballpark.

  339. tex's friend April 25th, 2010 at 5:02 pm

does anyone still think javy is throwing 200 innings easy this year? Has he made it into the 6th this year?

  340. eric April 25th, 2010 at 5:02 pm

hit girl- don’t you have something better to do then be a troll on a yankee blog? says a lot about you.

  343. tex's friend April 25th, 2010 at 5:02 pm

thames maybe should have gotten it, but it was hammered. javy is at fault here… not thames.

  344. Doreen - GTLU Standings & Rules April 25th, 2010 at 5:02 pm

    Laura -

I’m here. I still think Javy will turn it around.

As bad as Javy was today, if Thames catches that ball, the inning is very different. Problem is you can’t keep pitching into trouble against the Angels, because they will break through.

At least it’s still early in the game.

    Nice play Jete!

  345. The Ohta Faction April 25th, 2010 at 5:03 pm

That said, I would still take Javy Lopez 10 times out of 10 over Melky Cabrera.

  346. Mike J April 25th, 2010 at 5:03 pm

Vazquez is garbage! Can we get a refund from Atlanta? And why isn’t Gardner in left…….

  347. ADam April 25th, 2010 at 5:03 pm

javy cant seem to get it going.. hurt alert?

  348. Matt April 25th, 2010 at 5:03 pm

Despite what Vazquez has done, the offense kept them in this game by losing their patience as soon as they took the lead. After throwing 41 pitches in the first two innings, they have made Kazmir throw 26 in the next two. You have to finish a guy off, and deviating from the approach and getting overaggressive with a lead could really come back to burn you later on.

  349. tex's friend April 25th, 2010 at 5:03 pm

and is mitre ever going to pitch?

  350. m April 25th, 2010 at 5:03 pm

This game seems to be in the 8th. But it’s only the 5th. Let’s go, bats.

  351. CR9 April 25th, 2010 at 5:03 pm

Hmmmm…. If anybody would think Vazquez was cheating today, it would be me….

    But I dont see it.

Aside from the ball 4 pitch to load the bases, not much today…..

Though I could be wrong, Alfonso Marquez umped a Red Sox game about a week or two ago, and tried gifting them the game, so that WOULD MAKE SENSE!

  352. Nick in SF April 25th, 2010 at 5:03 pm

Thank goodness we’ll have 4+ innings to test that Angels bullpen again.

  353. Laura - My Pretend Boyfriend plays for BAL April 25th, 2010 at 5:03 pm

“I still think trading for Javy was a good idea. He has to turn this around at some point.”

That’s what people keep saying about Nick Johnson. I’m still waiting.

  354. Gil L April 25th, 2010 at 5:04 pm

    javy is DONE.

he’s afraid to pitch, it’s almost pathetic. no wait, it is…

he will be booed of the mound, then off the team, at YS.

    and rightfully so!!

  355. CB April 25th, 2010 at 5:04 pm

    Jerkface-

Cervelli is much busier back there than most catchers.

Javy was horrible today and that has nothing to do with Cervelli.

But he is very busy behind the plate. It’s something he’ll learn to do less of as he matures. He does it too much at times.

On that pitch to Napoli he even had his glove unnaturally elevated as if he were trying to get Napoli to see where the glove was. No catcher was going to receive the pitch in that spot and it was obvious he was going to shift outside – especially given that Vazquez has no fastball today.

  356. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 25th, 2010 at 5:04 pm

It’s too early to do that, but wow – what a mess our rotation and pen would be then. Phil would move up to the #4 (which is less than ideal to say the least) and Javy would be in the pen………as a long man?

  357. Paul April 25th, 2010 at 5:04 pm

    “Wow. Quick hook on Vazquez.”

4 runs is no quick hook. Argh!

Tough inning to watch. Now they need to score this inning!

  362. Laura - My Pretend Boyfriend plays for BAL April 25th, 2010 at 5:05 pm

“Strange place to bring in Logan; the Yankees need inings – why not Aceves?”

Wanted a lefty for Abreu. Probably holding on to Aceves for later.

  363. Macfan April 25th, 2010 at 5:05 pm

I must say I was dead wrong about Vazquez, I though he would do a decent job but he is $hi++ing his pants back in New York.

I can’t even watch the days he pitches I usually just check the scores and lo and behold another flop from this Softie.

Javier doesn’t have half the guts of Andy Pettitte, I have 0 confidence in Vazquez and that was after giving him the benefit of the doubt when many were turning on him and have a disdain for him, Now I clearly see why.

  364. tex's friend April 25th, 2010 at 5:05 pm

That said, I would still take Javy Lopez 10 times out of 10 over Melky Cabrera.

  365. sunny615 April 25th, 2010 at 5:05 pm

  366. Steve April 25th, 2010 at 5:05 pm

Would it be a bad idea to work in Mitre as a starter and let Javy work out his problems from some bullpen outings ?

  367. K April 25th, 2010 at 5:05 pm

It was silly to compare Vazquez to other 4, 5 like

    Wakefield, bucholtz, dice-K.

He’s not even as good as those.

  368. Northy April 25th, 2010 at 5:05 pm

How the heck did this bum strike out so many guys in the NL?.Mr Innings Eater..LOL

If you play the Mets, the Nationals, the Pirates, the Giants, the D-Backs, the Padres and facing pitchers regularly… there you have it…. lots of cheap strikeouts

  369. Melkman is in Hotlanta April 25th, 2010 at 5:05 pm

Javy Vasquez was a mistake from day one last winter. What does Cashman expect? Javy comes from the minor league team the Atlanta Braves in an inferior league and expects the soft one to become “the best number four in the league”?

SJ, you always defend Cashdope, well this trade is what you would call stinking up the joint.

  370. PittsburghYankeeFan April 25th, 2010 at 5:05 pm

So Javy Vasquez was one of the top pitchers in the NL last year? Where is that pitcher? Is this the second coming of Jaret Wright?

Could we see Hughes moved up to number 4 and some more of Sergio Mitre?

Your starter should give you a chance to win everey time out, not a loss.

  371. Angel - In an Empire State of Mind April 25th, 2010 at 5:06 pm

So predictable in this place. Every single year the first month is filled with people announcing how they were “right” about a certain acquisition being a complete waste and jumping on every single failure as proof of that (Nick Swisher 2009, anyone?). And then become overly invested in being right about it, to the point of ridiculousness. Its bizarre.

I want what is best for the team, and I’m willing to give some of the new guys time before deciding on whether they were a good acquisition or not.

  372. RS April 25th, 2010 at 5:06 pm

If Thames makes that catch, the Angels only tie the game. Vazquez has bad luck always getting matched up with a lefty, because then Thames starts in LF instead of Gardner.

I really think Girardi should just give Vazquez the best OF defense regardless of who’s on the mound for the opponent. Gardner’s defense for a flyball pitcher is so much more important than Thames’ bat.

  373. CB April 25th, 2010 at 5:06 pm

“Should Thames have gotten that ball?”

It was a fairly straightforward play. It was a play that any decent left fielder makes.

Thames is a limited player. He hits LH pitching well but he is a truly horrendous OF.

  374. JMK aka The Overshare April 25th, 2010 at 5:06 pm

    Vazquez just flat out stinks

  375. tex's friend April 25th, 2010 at 5:07 pm

nick johnson is different. he is only making 5.5, he contributes with walks, and we DID offer johnny 14 mil and he turned it down. Javy is making 11 mil and three players were traded for him.

  376. Matt April 25th, 2010 at 5:07 pm

Vazquez could not buy a strike on a pitch anywhere remotely near the location of that 2-1 pitch. Unbelievable.

  377. Carl April 25th, 2010 at 5:07 pm

    nice 2 different strike zones.

  378. Matt April 25th, 2010 at 5:07 pm

    *2-0 pitch

  379. SJ44 April 25th, 2010 at 5:07 pm

    Gotta be frustating for Girardi.

The guy has no confidence in his fastball and is trying to pitch backwards in the AL. That ain’t gonna work.

Give him 3 more starts to get it together.

If he can’t, then you have no choice but to pull him from the rotation.

  380. CR9 April 25th, 2010 at 5:07 pm

That 2-0 count to Swish was not a STRIKE!!!!!!!!!!

    THIS SCUMBAG MARQUEZ!

If you guys are saying he’s squeezing us, he must be

  381. Jerkface April 25th, 2010 at 5:07 pm

Cervelli might move a lot, but when he catches the ball his glove stays statue still and he lets the ump get a good look.

The ump missed a couple of clear calls.

  382. blake April 25th, 2010 at 5:07 pm

Javy doesn’t have his velocity yet but he’s going to have to pitch off his fastball anyway to be successful. He’s afraid to throw it, he’s getting behind, and hitters are sitting offspeed. He’s going to have to start believing in his fastball again, no matter the velocity, or this will continue.

  383. Matt April 25th, 2010 at 5:07 pm

That pitch would have been ball 4 if Vazquez were on the mound. What a joke.

  384. tex's friend April 25th, 2010 at 5:07 pm

again, thames maybe could have got that, however the ball was crushed. javy didnt help ti out.

  385. m April 25th, 2010 at 5:08 pm

    Patrick,

    Agree on the ump.

But Girardi wanted to give Gardner a day off. And Thames hits lefties well.

I don’t have a problem with that. And this really is on Javy.

    Has Winn played LF?

  386. JMK aka The Overshare April 25th, 2010 at 5:08 pm

Not a great off season for cashman. Johnson can’t hit and vazquez can’t pitch

  387. Mike J April 25th, 2010 at 5:08 pm

Oh yeah, the Nick Johnson signing was not very good up to this point…..I would rather have had Matsui or Damon….he is a walking injury and seems afraid to swing the bat and is like that little league kid who just hope he gets a walk.

  388. CR9 April 25th, 2010 at 5:08 pm

    2 different strike zones!!!

I have been saying it for 10 years!!!!!!!!!!!

  389. Melkman is in Hotlanta April 25th, 2010 at 5:09 pm

Thames-Vazquez-Johnson – there’s a reason why they were former Yankees.

  393. tex's friend April 25th, 2010 at 5:09 pm

  394. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 25th, 2010 at 5:09 pm

Laura, but Aceves can get a lefty out. I would save Logan for later in the game….Now we’ve just got Marte. Of course, if the game gets out of hand, it won’t matter.

SJ, then how does Javy regain his form in the pen? The repercussions of that move would be pretty serious.

  395. Macfan April 25th, 2010 at 5:10 pm

All I keep telling myself is

ONLY 1 YEAR ON HIS CONTRACT

Then we can get him the heck out of New York, he is Gutless, and big mouth Ozzie Guillen was right on calling out Vazquez toughness, now I see why.

Vazquez is an absolute sissy on the mound. I regret that I argued with some Yankee fans who were booing this guy.

  396. Felix April 25th, 2010 at 5:10 pm

When the terrible Brandon Wood crushes a ball like that its definitely the pitchers fault. That was a moon pie, Javy should at least skip a start. At least everyone else is doing their job and the BP is fresh.

  397. SJ44 April 25th, 2010 at 5:10 pm

Calling the GM of the defending champs a dope says more about your stupidity than it does his trading skills.

  398. Gary April 25th, 2010 at 5:10 pm

Didn’t like Javy the first go around and either did the Yanks. Now he’s back for the second go around (along with Nick) and guess what he looks like the same guy. Lightning does strike twice. I just wish Joba could have lived up to the hype, then we wouldn’t have to have this back bencher out there every 5th game.

  399. tex's friend April 25th, 2010 at 5:10 pm

i felt bad for javy still being booed for 2004, but he is now going to be booed because of 2010.

  400. Rob NY April 25th, 2010 at 5:10 pm

How is this trade stinking up the joint? Melky is a 4th outfielder and Arodys has sucked so far in the sally league. Javier will be fine.

Thames got an awful jump and should have caught that ball. He should not be playing the field.

  401. Jose April 25th, 2010 at 5:10 pm

I hate to be negative, but I knew it wouldn’t be any different with Vazquez this time around. Let’s remember, his own manager (Ozzie Guillen) called him out. He was awful with the White Sox too. Hopefully this is the last time Cashman is fooled by NL-inflated stats.

He tried to feed us Kool-Aid about how Javy was hurt in 2004…blah, blah, blah. The truth is, even Mitre (coming off TJ surgery) pitched better last year.

As someone mentioned, lets at least hope he’ll stay a Type A Free agent.

As long as our other 4 starters are healthy, Javy won’t see one inning in the postseason. Thank God for that!

  402. Rob B (Never a Gardner doubter) April 25th, 2010 at 5:10 pm

Thames looked like he was frozen when that ball was hit, like he wasn’t sure where to go. By the time he started moving in, it was nearly too late. He had to dive for a ball that should have been caught on his feet.

  403. Hit Girl April 25th, 2010 at 5:10 pm

what a great offseason from cashman

  404. CB April 25th, 2010 at 5:11 pm

“Cervelli might move a lot, but when he catches the ball his glove stays statue still and he lets the ump get a good look.”

I didn’t make any comment whatsoever about how he catches the ball. I was only commenting on how he sets up.

I even said this in the first line of my post:

“Cervelli is a very good defensive catcher and he is lauded as such.”

I guess calling him a very good defensive catcher isn’t enough. Ok. He’s the perfect defensive catcher.

He’s better than Johnny Bench and Josh Gibson.

What is it with Cervelli and Brett Gardner? I just don’t get how sensitive some fans are with these two guys.

  405. Laura - My Pretend Boyfriend plays for BAL April 25th, 2010 at 5:11 pm

  408. Mark- Can't touch this April 25th, 2010 at 5:11 pm

Javy needs to grow a pair and start attacking hitters, he looks like he is scared out there. So what if he only has a 86-89 MPH fastball use it. And Tex having no luck.

  409. spark April 25th, 2010 at 5:11 pm

Tex is just missing pitches. He’s ready to break out (I hope, I hope).

  410. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 25th, 2010 at 5:11 pm

Moving Phil up to the #4 would be the worst move they could make. Not only would the Yankees not be able to monitor his innings in a relatively smooth way (as happened to Joba last year), but that puts a lot more pressure on him to perform. Boy, I wouldn’t do that.

  418. Macfan April 25th, 2010 at 5:12 pm

Why do we have to talk about a MAJOR LEAGUUE PITCHER believing in his fastball, I am already sick of Vazquez because he keeps doing the same nonsense every start.

I don’t care about his fastball or whatever other pitch, he looks like utter rubbish on the mound and I can’t even offer a defense any longer after trusting he would be half decent in New York.

    The guy is a Chicken.

  419. rconn23 April 25th, 2010 at 5:12 pm

And here comes another choke job by the Baltimore bullpen. Just an awful, awful team. Hopefully, they’ll lie down like sheep for the Yankees this week.

  447. Jerkface April 25th, 2010 at 5:16 pm

What is it with Cervelli and Brett Gardner? I just don’t get how sensitive some fans are with these two guys.

You’re implying that the yankees are losing strikes to Cervelli moving, if they are losing strikes to the umpire then that is bad umpiring. If Javy is throwing to where Cervelli sets up, instead of what the SIGNS are telling him, then that is on javy.

And if it is really a problem, then maybe JAvy should bring it up.

  451. CB April 25th, 2010 at 5:17 pm

That pitch Logan just threw Hunter is one of the best and most valuable pitches a left handed pitcher can throw.

That was a terrific back heel slider. That is one of those pitches that allows left handed pitchers to consistently get out right handed hitters.

Logan comes kind of 3/4 so you’d think he’d have trouble with RH hitters. But if he can throw that back heel slider like that he’ll be more than a LOOGY.

  452. Carl April 25th, 2010 at 5:17 pm

Agree with SJ here. Give Javy 3 more starts, then DL him for a tired arm, so he can rehab and try to gain arm strength. Javy was complaining about a dead arm coming out of ST, and its obvious in his inability to trust his fastball. That’s not going to work in the AL, especially the AL East.

  502. CB April 25th, 2010 at 5:26 pm

Vazquez is a completely different pitcher when he’s able to throw his fastball consistently at 90-92.

That’s his fundamental problem right now. His fastball just doesn’t have any life on it – and Javy knows it.

He’s out there without that fastball and it’s forcing him to try to throw in reverse which you absolutely cannot do in the AL.

Javy has said that his arm is behind where it was this time last year as last year he got ready earlier to pitch in the WBC.

I wonder if pitching in the WBC and then racking up all those innings in Atlanta made him back off his conditioning this winter.

I don’t know. His arm looks like it’s still in spring training shape.

He prepared early for the WBC and then went on to have the best year of his career last year. Not sure why he wouldn’t prepare the same way this off season, unless it was just too much stress on his arm.

  503. Jose April 25th, 2010 at 5:26 pm

I agree, Laura. Especially being a high school student in Maine at the time, I took a lot of crap for that loss.

And for all of those breakdowns that series, when I think of 2004 (and yes, I know Torre put Javy in a bad situation), the image of Damon crushing a meat-fastball for a grand slam sticks out more than anything.

Someone says “2004,” and that image plays in my mind.

Saying Thames should have caught that ball is in no way excusing Vazquez for his poor start. Thames made a horrible play in the field that cost the Yankees at least two runs. If he had played it properly, it was shallow enough and hit hard enough that he might have been able to keep the run from 3rd from scoring. Even if he couldn’t, and Vazquez was able to get the next guy out, then it would have been just 1 run. 0 runs if he is able to keep the runner on 3rd.

Good defense might have bailed out poor pitching.

  506. JoeMimic April 25th, 2010 at 5:26 pm

got to like this trade, actually:

melky + vizcaino for boone logan + a player to be named to soon…

  508. D April 25th, 2010 at 5:26 pm

    It’s real simple folks:

The Yanks must at some point trade Vasquez back to the N.L. for at least a pair of relievers
including one who could go right into the Yankees bullpen and move Joba back to the rotation and leave him there. Joba > this gutless turd who couldn’t hack it the first time around as a Yankee. I have full confidence that everyone in the bullpen after Mo save Mitre could handle the 8th inning by committee. Joba isn’t the end-all be-all 8th inning solution.

The Yanks must also seriously consider trading or releasing Thames, making Posada the DH,
Cervelli the starting catcher, and Johnson the $6M (including $250K buyout) backup 1B, because it is clear to see that Cervelli is a better catcher than Posada and a better hitter than Johnson, and that Gardner/Granderson/Swisher at the #2 > Johnson. I’ll take Cervelli’s defense, him hitting .260 with a .34X OBP I think he’s capable of and a Gardner/Granderson/Swisher rotating #2 hitter over Johnson taking up space at DH.

Thames is dreadful in LF as today is the second time he cost the Yanks two runs with his limited range, the other time his start in Boston. He is unfit to play LF. Time to give Winn some at-bats.

The problem with the Yankees is their g.m. Brian Cashman who can’t develop enough talent to acquire a reliever who could once and for all put Joba in the rotation permanently. This has led to the unnecessary and now costly, horribe trade for Vasquez, because this team is better with Melky as the RF, Swisher not Johnson at DH, and Joba in the rotation.

You have to understand I’m doubly mad because I have argued with fellow Yankee fans about Vazquez but this guy just seems scared of pitching back in New York.

I’m totally ambivalent on Javy. I’ve got zero feelings about him. I think he can work things out. Not sure about the best way to do it, but he’s not some rookie you can just send down. Another outing or two like today, though, and something will need to be done. A “DL” stint or work out of the bullpen. The other starters are humming, so we can live with this. But how long should we have to?

Robi Cano! He’s owned Kazmir lately, no?

  523. Joe from Long Island April 25th, 2010 at 5:28 pm

Pitchers’ are going to learn at some point that you cannot make mistakes to Cano this year. He is going to destroy them.

His pull swing has been so good this year. He’s getting more backspin on the ball than we’ve seen him get before. It’s a picture perfect swing.

It’s just amazing how hard he can hit the ball given how free and easy his swing is.

  549. CB April 25th, 2010 at 5:34 pm

    Jerkface-

That’s what Javy himself said. He changed how he prepared for the season and that his arm is behind where is was last year.

Why that is I can’t say for certain – but Javy cited his work with the WBC as the reason.

He may be wrong about himself or might not be letting on publicly but that’s what he’s said. And it’s plausible to think that may be the case.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Its looking more and more like he is auditioning for the 2010 role of Chien-Ming Wang last season.

I mean this is hideous from Vazquez that I can no longer defend him by just saying its 1 game.

His starts are becoming pretty much the same, blowing up in innings and doing his best to take the team out of the game.

Watching Andy yesterday and Vazquez today makes me appreciate Andy even more if that was possible after Andy’s playoffs last season.

Some guys have the cojones and some don’t. Javier doesn’t.

  553. GC April 25th, 2010 at 5:34 pm

I don’t know if I’d even give him three more starts at this point. If his arm is this dead then it might be best for all parties if he just gets shelved for 15 days right now. Three more disastrous starts would kill his confidence to the point where even once he feels healthy I’m not sure he’d be mentally ready to pitch.

Also, calling a trade stupid after FOUR STARTS is so incomprehensibly stupid that it defies even basic knowledge of baseball. Melky stinks and Vizcaino is hardly tearing things up in the Sally League so its not as if this trade has had terrible implications on the other end.

Joba and Hughes both should have been in the rotation to begin with and Cashman’s lack of confidence in them (and memories of 2008) are what fueled him to make the Vazquez deal. With Hughes looking like a number 2 already and Joba not appearing to make any progress in the bullpen (he also looks much more like a starter at this point) that decision appears to be foolish. But the trade itself was perfectly reasonable.

Imagine if the Yanks didn’t trade for Vasquez. They would GASP! be like they were in 2009!!!

Assuming the Yanks kept Cabrera, still signed Johnson, Winn, and Park, and passed on Thames:

    Starting Nine/Batting Order:

    Jeter/Gardner/Teixiera/Rodriguez/Cano/Posada/Granderson/Swisher DH/Cabrera RF

Options to start Johnson at DH and Swisher in RF if Cabrera struggles,
Cabrera in LF or Swisher in RF if Gardner struggles.

    Bench: Cervelli/Johnson/Pena/Winn

    Rotation: Sabathia/Burnett/Pettitte/Chamberlain/Hughes

Having the same velocity on a fastball doesn’t = the same fastball. Aceves could hide it better, it could have more / less movement. Also Aceves has pretty much thrown a 91 mph fastball and an 87-89 cutter that inning.

“I assume you agree that Phil can not be the #4.”

People keep asking about this but it’s a completely irrelevant issue. There is no such thing functionally as a #4 starter.

It just happens to be how you line up the rotation to start the year. Otherwise it’s not that big of a deal on a practical basis.

The whole idea of a #4, #1 starter is more an issue about the quality of the rotation and how many innings you can expect from different slots.

If Vazquez get removed from the rotation nothing different would happen to Phil Hughes or any other pitcher.

They’ll just insert Mitre or Aceves into the rotation.

Very true. There seem to be a number of yankee fans that are deriving pleasure from the difficulties that players acquired in the off season are having.

It’s as if they believe they perceive themselves to be locked in some grand metaphysical challenge of “I told you so…” with Cashman and can smirk when the team does badly.

CB, last year Joba was in essence the #4 and I know Cash/Joe/whomever said that that made it harder for them to monitor his innings. That’s why Ace has to pitch ahead of Phil – it has nothing to do with who’s better. You can skip starts, etc… with the #5 that you can’t do with the #4.

Who says the late inning magic is gone? It’s not – the Yankees have come back several times this year. The reason they had so many comebacks last year is because they got behind a lot – maybe they won’t have so many this year because they’ll be playing from ahead most of the time.

Tex, I don’t buy that the Yankees are just giving away at bats. If they are, then I would be extremely disappointed in them and then that would make a difference on the kind of team I think they will be this year. Not executing is not the same as not trying.

  621. CB April 25th, 2010 at 5:53 pm

    Betsy-

You are making an issue out of nothing. Last year and this year are completely different.

The problem last year wasn’t so much that Joba had to be slotted as the “#4″ starter it was more than they only had 4 stable starters at all. Where the pitchers line up doesn’t matter that much.

They aren’t going to have that issue this year. They’ll stretch out Mitre or Aceves and insert them into the rotation. That’ll given them 5 starters.

Phil Hughes will be ok. And anway, he’s set to throw close to a full workload as it is. He’s a member of the team so if something goes wrong and he has to step up he’ll need to do so. It’s not a big deal. It’s just part of the game.

  622. CR9 April 25th, 2010 at 5:53 pm

Here’s my theory as to how to get rid of trolls on a Yankees site….

Find a way to make 100% of umpires fair towards the Yankees and competent….

The Yankees will never miss the playoffs again, and will be unlikely to lose more World Series than we win.

That would keep the trolls away!

Nick Johnson has contributed by at least getting on base with walks…

If you want Thames bat in there against LH pitchers fine. But why not at DH? he sucks in the field. He did the sames thing is the Tampa.

Posada had the day off yesterday & we have an off-day tommorow, why not catch Posada, play Gardner in LF, & have Thames DH.

Even when Johnson gets back split the left/righty hitting at DH, not with Gardner. Gardy in the lineup makes the Yanks a much more dynamic team & a better defensive team. Gardner has earned the right to play every day with his .300 plus average & leading the AL in stolen bases.

    Keep Thames out of LF….

  668. Macfan April 25th, 2010 at 6:02 pm

There are players you have confidence in and players you don’t.

Even when a Pettitte or Sabathia is struggling you expect them to turn it around

With Vazquez even when he is going good in a game, you are waiting for that 1 inning he may blow up for some reason.

That is just the way some some things are.

Considering how Vazquez left New York, this is not the way he wanted to return and perform out of the gate.

He has already started whinging to the media about being booed, his work outs in the offseason, his arm strength, etc.

This is not the town for that, get out there and go do your job of helping the team to succeed.

I’ve tried giving Javy the benefit of the doubt but in watching him I see factors that lead me to question doing that. He is the type of personality that makes you lose confidence in him.

  670. Ed April 25th, 2010 at 6:02 pm

Betsy, the trade will never be “bad” because we gave up nothing to get Vasquez. Cabrerra sucks. Stick him into a weaker lineup and we see that without the protection he had in the Yankee lineup and he has been exposed as a below average hitter.

We can still win 105 games even with Vasquez on the roster and he will occasionally pitch a gem, but he scares the heck out of me in a playoff series.

  711. Matt April 25th, 2010 at 6:08 pm

You can’t blame Marte one bit for this inning.

Abreu walked on 2 pitches which were right on the corner, and Morales hit a 3-0 pitch right on the corner at the knees for a home run.

If Abreu doesn’t draw that walk on a bunch of ridiculous calls, the inning probably never comes close to what it became. The home plate umpire squeezed Marte tremendously and forced him to come in there in hitter’s counts, and even then he didn’t make that bad of pitches.

  712. m April 25th, 2010 at 6:08 pm

  716. CB April 25th, 2010 at 6:09 pm

What is the great value of match up baseball out of the bull pen?

When are managers ever going to learn? It is just startling.

Aceves was sharp. He was throwing the ball great.

And Girardi takes him out of the game just purely based on the hand he throws with. That trumped how well Aceves was throwing the ball.

Marte is so up an down with his command. It is not surprising that on any given day he’s just not going to have it.

And it’s very obvious very quickly when Marte is bad.

So you take out the guy throwing well in order to gain the generic statistical advantage of the left handed pitcher.

It’s just remarkable. The way Aceves was throwing the ball was largely dismissed.

Baseball managers need to stop with this Tony LaRussa school of bull pen management.

Watch a few games from the 1970′s. Learn about decision theory. Whatever. This just makes no sense.

  717. Rob B (Never a Gardner doubter) April 25th, 2010 at 6:09 pm

Actually, the Angels scored the second most runs in baseball last year. But maybe half of that was against the Yankees…

Oh well, the Yankees just need to beat the Orioles to come home with a winning road trip. A 12-6 record is still awesome after the brutal schedule they’ve had early on.

The only thing that infuriates me is that Girardi has barely used Aceves and Robertson at all this year, and they were two of his best relievers last season. What is it going to take for him to leave a pitcher in until he at least allows one freaking baserunner?

  723. The Ohta Faction April 25th, 2010 at 6:10 pm

Well, there’s 0.63% of the season circling the drain.

When you’re talking that much less than 1% of the season, does it even matter?

It’s all just entertainment in April.

  724. ben April 25th, 2010 at 6:10 pm

Makes no sense CB makes no sense. SMH He loves matchups. He gets too cute at times.

  726. Jose April 25th, 2010 at 6:11 pm

I agree, I love Girardi as the manager (for the most part), but he relies way to heavily on “matchups.” Leave the person in the game who is throwing the ball well (in this case Ace). No reason to take him out there.

  727. Ed April 25th, 2010 at 6:11 pm

Girardi has a tendency to overmanage we all know this. Its been his “MO” since his Florida days…. Never been a big fan of the guy. I think he wins because he has the horses to win, not because he is a fine manager.

Even so, Javy Vasquez and Marte need to execute.

  737. GC April 25th, 2010 at 6:12 pm

You gotta wonder if Torre’s much maligned bullpen management was really so stupid after all.

He had far less of a commitment to ‘match-up baseball’ than Girardi did. And he rode mediocre pitchers going through hot stretches – Ron Villone, Scott Proctor, Tanyon Sturtze – very hard. Maybe overworking mediocre relievers who are hot isn’t such a bad idea. Torre would have left any of those three relievers on a hot streak in, regardless of matchups.

These LAA TV announcers are morons. One of them just said that Torii made that catch as payback for being hit in the knee during his last at bat. So are we supposed to believe that if Torii hadn’t been hit, he would have let that ball fall in the gap for a double? Idiots.

  751. Jerkface April 25th, 2010 at 6:14 pm

The really sad thing is that managers do this based on “statistics.” And they are actually using the statistics incorrectly. It’s just hard to believe.

Statistics don’t determine decisions. There are entire fields of work devoted to this subject. In baseball managers think they are making “rational” decisions based on evidence but they are actually using the data incorrectly.

How can no one point this out to them? I can’t get over it.

  755. Bandit April 25th, 2010 at 6:16 pm

Weren’t people killing Joe for letting Joba, a RH face Morales, rather than bringing in Marte?

Now people wanted Aceves to face 2 lefties? Then why is Marte on the team?

Convenient… Marte does what he is paid to do (get left handers out) and it is not an issue.

  756. Rob B (Never a Gardner doubter) April 25th, 2010 at 6:16 pm

    Difference between Girardi and Torre:

Girardi uses his whole bullpen (for the most part). Torre had his favorites that he used all the time and the rest were left to rot.

  757. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 25th, 2010 at 6:16 pm

  769. RS April 25th, 2010 at 6:19 pm

I actually liked Girardi’s bullpen management in 2008. He took a group of unproven relievers and gave them the best opportunity to succeed.

It’s when you already have the proven relievers and refuse to use them that irks me. Aceves won 10 games last year and Girardi takes him out of the game like he was expecting an implosion.

  777. m April 25th, 2010 at 6:21 pm

    Bandit,

The fact remains that Aceves can get out both lefties and righties. He threw 15 pitches in 1.2 innings.

I will take a steady Aceves on a low pitch count over Box o’ Chocolates Marte in that situation any day.

  778. CR9 April 25th, 2010 at 6:21 pm

I cant hate the Angels so much this year.

They actually *GASP* showed effort last year in the ALDS to beat the Red Sox, and then *GASP* made mental mistakes galore in losing to us.

Helping us to our 27th World Series!!!!

  779. KZONE April 25th, 2010 at 6:21 pm

Bringing in his LEFT HANDER to face two LEFT HANDERS to lead off an inning is showing how smart someone is? No, showing how smart he is would be to leave the soft tossing righty in when he has a good lefty in the pen.

And if Aceves give up the HR to Morales, he would be killed for Marte being in his ‘dog house’ and not using him.

    Girardi can’t win.

  791. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 25th, 2010 at 6:24 pm

CR, I find Joe gets the best out of his players because he’s a genuinely good man who cares about his players as people. He’s very good that way and over the course of a long season, that is enormously beneficial. It’s sort of like looking at a painting – get some perspective and it’s fine, but don’t look too closely at the brushstrokes. We very well may have lost today anyway – it’s not like our pitching, D or offense was on the beam.

  797. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 25th, 2010 at 6:26 pm

I’m not assuming anything in Baltimore. Baseball just isn’t like football where the huge talent gap means anything; the talent gap between teams comes into play over the course of a long season, not necessarily 3 games. The Yankees are not playing particularly well right now – their offense is “ok”, but not great, and their D leaves a lot to be desired. I’ll take 2/3 and a 5/4 road trip.

  798. Matt April 25th, 2010 at 6:26 pm

The Yankees have outplayed the Angels in nearly every game in this series, and are going to lose 2/3 due to some ridiculous strike zones and Girardi’s overmanaging. A pretty big disappointment given the fact that they could have swept this series with a few more breaks in their direction.

In today’s game, 7 of the 8 runs for the Angels scored after walks on which the umpire missed at least 2 strike calls. Thames missed a ball in left field, but the fact that the inning got so out of hand was the fact that Napoli walked when he should have struck out in that at bat. Same thing in the 7th. If Abreu does not get that walk in which Marte hit the corner twice with fastballs, then the inning never gets to Morales in the first place.

A few missed calls here and there can completely turn around the progression of the game. It’s not ridiculous to “blame” umpires, considering when they don’t do their jobs and miss calls in CRUCIAL spots, they can definitely swing the game in one team’s favor when they otherwise may not have been in that position.

  799. Mark April 25th, 2010 at 6:27 pm

We’ve won 1 series in Anaheim in 6 years (last year in September).

Even in the playoffs, we lost 2 of 3 in Anahiem because we blew leads late (Andy blew a 3-0 lead, Hughes blew the lead in the 7th after we rallied from 4 down in game 5).

We always seem to hit in Anahiem but our pitchers and especially bullpen always seems to get rocked. That’s why Andy’s performance yesterday was refreshing.

ERA may be one of the worst stats by which to judge a reliever’s performance!

You people make me laugh more and more every day with your ridiculous “Robertson shouldn’t pitch because OMG HIS ERA!!!!”

Relievers inherit other relievers’ runners and other relievers allow their runners to score. Unlike the case of a starter, a relief pitcher’s ERA is often not entirely in his hands unless he is the closer. You have to judge a reliever by stats such as batting average against, K/9, BB/9, etc, stats which are IN HIS CONTROL.

In all of those stats, Robertson has excelled tremendously. Last season opponents hit .216 against Robertson, and he struck out nearly 3 times as many as he walked, with a nearly 13 K/9 rate last year, tops in the AL. He was the best reliever on the Yankees other than Phil Hughes and Mariano Rivera last year, yet Girardi does not seem to trust him consistently.

Can Posada hit another infield hit?

  816. ben April 25th, 2010 at 6:33 pm

    @Matt

Completely absent from your entire post is any recognition that the Yankees benefited from a similarly narrow strike zone. We had 5 walks today, 4 of which involved at least one pitch that was clearly a strike being called a ball.

Rather than accuse the umpires of having some secret desire to ruin your weekend and thrust the Yankees into the pit of despair, don’t you think it’s possible that this up just has a narrow strike zone?

Feinsand needs to read my comments above. Javy can’t make fans forget 2004. Until he does, he’ll always be behind the eight ball.

Yanks will either be 13-5 or most likely, 12-6

    but note this.

    # of Yankee home games = 6

    # of Yankee road games = 12

    12-6 is a tremendous start.

12-6 when 2/3 of your games were on the road = phenomenal

  820. RS April 25th, 2010 at 6:34 pm

We play the Angels like the Twins play us. The Angels relish being able to come from behind against the Yankees, just like the Yankees don’t blink when the Twins get a lead against them.

  821. Jerkface April 25th, 2010 at 6:35 pm

70% of the Yankees games in April are road games. Getting off to a hot start this April was going to be tough and they have accomplished that (pending the orioles)

I haven’t seen any of this game-
However, I will add him to the really long list of umpires you hate. I don’t waste my energy on that

  825. CB April 25th, 2010 at 6:37 pm

The umpiring had almost nothing to do with this loss. From the first inning you could see Vazquez was living on borrowed time.

The only question was whether he could get lucky enough to get through five innings before the windows blew open.

He looked awful and that’s why the game broke the way it did.

  826. 66 stripes April 25th, 2010 at 6:37 pm

Because Robertson didn’t give up the game-tying rocket single to Beltre in the 1st game
or because he didn’t give up that double to Youkallis and Marte/Joba had to baul him out.
or he didn’t give up a grand slam against the Angels, prompting us to get Mariano in the game.

Again, let’s not act like he has been lights out here and its some crime that he is pitching infrequently. He has been up and down, just like the rest of the pen has. Joba, Robertson, Ace, Park, Marte, etc. have all looked erratic so far this season. They’ve looked great some nights and got rocked the next.

  827. CR9 April 25th, 2010 at 6:37 pm

Alfonso Marquez did his job today, SPECTACULARLY.

He deserves all the credit for this Angels, I mean, HP umpires’ victory.

Thanks for the fair game yesterday, Bob Davidson.

Lets not also forget that almost all of their games on the road have been against the best teams in the league-

    Boston, Tampa and Anaheim.

Its not exactly like playing in Kansas City

    3-3 in California.

    3-3 vs. Angels.

I was just playing around with you. You dont have to blame anybody you dont want to. :D

“The Angels improve to 10-10, the Yankees “fall” to 12-6?

Umm, I’d rather have the Yankees record. Falling or not. Just sayin’

  835. Todd April 25th, 2010 at 6:39 pm

Dig this….Sox have played the O’s & Royals 3 times already, Rays have played O’s 6 times already!!

  836. Matt April 25th, 2010 at 6:39 pm

Not even close. Did you see the 3-1 pitch on Swisher right after Vazquez gave back the lead? That pitch was at least 3-4 inches off the plate. The Yankees have not seen a tight strike zone because it has only been tight for their pitchers. Marquez has consistently expanded the strike zone on Yankees hitters, which have forced them to swing at pitches off the plate in pitcher’s counts.

Only someone who isn’t a serious baseball fan would think that umpires have no impact on games. A missed call in an at bat can completely turn around a crucial at bat, and when they are missing 2 or 3 pitches in a row, it’s almost impossible to get quality major league hitters out.

How many PERFECT pitches can a pitcher make in a row if they are not getting called? When you say that if you keep fouling stuff off eventually he might make a mistake, the same applies when he is not getting pitches called. When a guy is in a tough spot and has made some high stress pitches, a missed call in a crucial at bat may decide the game.

  837. rconn23 April 25th, 2010 at 6:40 pm

    What an ugly, ugly game.

This ballpark is just a house of horrors for the Yankees. Luckily, this is the last time the Yankees will have to play a regular season game here.

When they play the Angels at this park, Anaheim’s batting average on balls in play must be like .750. It’s just ridiculous.

    Good riddance to this place.

  838. K April 25th, 2010 at 6:40 pm

Yankees had 3 hits for the day! Javier was awful ! He can’t pitch in the AL.

  839. m April 25th, 2010 at 6:40 pm

“The Angels go to 10-10. The Yankees fall to 12-6.” :)

We’ve gotten off to a great start. A pace that would’ve been very difficult to keep up.

Took us 6 series to lose one.

I’m disappointed, though. Would’ve been nice to set the record of series wins to start a season.

And disappointed that Javy is still struggling. Hopefully, he’ll turn it around very soon. We need those innings!

Off to the White House and then hopefully whitewash the O’s.

A 3-3 road trip is not the end of the world. On to Baltimore for the last leg of this trip and 15 games off the road schedule. Nobody on the DL. A few issues for Girardi to iron out before the next home game vs. the White Sox on April 30.

  842. Matt April 25th, 2010 at 6:42 pm

Umm… 7 of the 8 Angels runs came either with 2 outs after a walk that came on missed calls, or or after Thames missed that ball in left field.

Seven of their eight runs. Think about that before you say the Yankees got flat out beaten today.

If Thames catches that ball or Napoli strikes out like he should have, the inning is maybe 1 or 2 runs tops, and the game is a completely different animal. It changes everything.

This may be the first time I’ve ever agreed with Feinsand. LOL

    LOL.

I actually agree with him a lot. He’s a pretty reasonable level-headed person.

I think he’s right. Yankee fans live far too much in the past. They’re like elephants, they dont’ forget – to their own detriment at times.

  844. ben April 25th, 2010 at 6:43 pm

“Only someone who isn’t a serious baseball fan would think that umpires have no impact on games.”

And only someone with a total lack of common sense would be convinced that the umpires are always out to screw his favorite team.

Again, nobody is denying that umpires can and do have impacts on games. What is ludicrous is the claim that a substantial group of umpires are affirmatively making an effort to treat the Yankees differently than other teams.

  845. Doreen - GTLU Standings & Rules April 25th, 2010 at 6:44 pm

I was eating dinner during the 3-run homerun and mis-communication with “the bench.”

The result of that at-bat is on the manager. Definitely.

  846. Vectorious April 25th, 2010 at 6:44 pm

@Betsy “Losing 2/3 in Anaheim is pretty disappointing, especially since they’ve played pretty badly.”

The Angels went 5-2 after leaving NY and that included a 5 game win streak. They’re one of the better teams in the AL, what’s disappointing about losing a series to them? It’s not is if they got swept out of town. They grabbed a win and had two tough losses. All in all they went 3-3 on the west coast swing. I’ll take it.

12-6 against Boston, Tampa, Texas and LA (twice) is pretty nice way to start off the season. Especially when 2/3 of those games were on the road…

  847. Doreen - GTLU Standings & Rules April 25th, 2010 at 6:52 pm

Overall, over the body of work, Girardi does a very good to excellent job of managing a bullpen; it is his strength. For some reason, we seem to be seeing a little too much changing up. But, one thing that has been constant over his 3 seasons is that April has been a weird month for relief pitchers for the Yankees. In prior years, there’s definitely been an over-exposure issue; this year, there’s some under-exposure.

I’m not gonna hang Girardi by his thumbs for trying to get his bullpen work. But today was not a good day – partly because he could ahve stuck with Aceves, but mainly because of the indecision that was evident in the at-bat where (was it Morales – I was eating dinner?) was starting to be IBB’d and then was pitched to.

  848. Doreen - GTLU Standings & Rules April 25th, 2010 at 6:55 pm

Girardi is not trying to show how smart he is; he is trying to spread the work around. Sometimes that’s good. Let’s face it, CC and Pettitte and AJ have been giving innings. Even Phil gave innings. When are these relief guys going to pitch? If they don’t pitch enough, they’re not sharp; if they pitch too much, they’re exposed. It’s a fine line.

This will work itself out. April seems to be a month for working things out.

And let’s look at it this way: In prior years, while the Yankees were working things out, they were at best .500. They are 6 or 7 game over .500 while still having things work themselves out. Perspective. Perspective.

  849. akamgkrebs April 25th, 2010 at 7:02 pm

He is the same manager he was last year, it worked out. He made plenty of head scratchers last year and in the end the yankees came out on top and most of our bullpen had good years.
    **************************************************
You mean, the Yanks won despite Girardi’s bonehead moves.

  850. Ed April 25th, 2010 at 7:07 pm

Akamgkrebs, Lets be fair. Anyone can win with this team. Its about the talent. Thats why I laugh at the “fire Jerry Manuel” talk across town…. The manager of a team accounts for a difference of a couple of games a year.

  851. akamgkrebs April 25th, 2010 at 7:13 pm

Again, that doesn’t mean that Girardi doesn’t make bonehead moves on a regular basis. The Yanks won theWorld Series, not because they used a 3 man rotation, but in spite of it. They did not win because Posada was benched when Burnett pitched in the playoffs, but in spite of it.
