Obama Yankees Baseball

President Obama welcomed the Yankees into the East Room this afternoon, and celebrated their World Series championship by speaking more about the Yankees tradition than about their wins and losses.

He singled out Mark Teixeira’s work with a scholarship fund at his high school, and the spoke about Jorge Posada’s work for children with Craniosynostosis. He said that Derek Jeter “epitomizes” the tradition of the Yankees.

“What people tend to forget,” President Obama said. “Especially after watching their teams lose, is that being a Yankee is as much about character as it is about performance; as much about who you are as what you do. Being successful in New York doesn’t come easy, and it’s not for everybody. It takes a certain kind of player to thrive in the pressure cooker of Yankee Stadium -– somebody who is poised and professional, and knows what it takes to wear the pinstripes. It takes somebody who appreciates how lucky he is, and who feels a responsibility for those who are less fortunate.”

After the event, Jeter, Teixeira, Andy Pettitte, Alex Rodriguez and Joe Girardi met briefly with the media outside of the West Wing.

For whatever reason, I’m having trouble uploading audio at the moment, but I’ll try to get all of the President’s remarks posted to the blog as soon as possible. Until then, you can read a transcript at the White House website.

So I guess CC doesn’t have any character since the President didn’t mention him.

Javier Vazquez nods in agreement while he sits in his hotel room in Baltimore with the blinds drawn, crying and eating a pint of Hagen Daaz.

/please note: this was meant as a joke.

He only mentioned Jeter because hes mixed.

  7. Mike_Boston April 26th, 2010 at 5:06 pm

At first I thought ‘big deal he didn’t mention Arod’, but after reading some of these comments and thinking a little harder, yea he probably purposely left out his name because of the PED issue last year, and like other people already pointed out, he commented on it last year calling it “depressing”. Politically he did the right thing there. As president he couldn’t acknowledge Arod’s great post season as much as all of us would like to forget he can’t and that’s his job, he can’t put himself in that position ever because think of the consequences. I’m fine with how it went down. What about CC, he pretty much was the best starting pitcher in the entire post season, he wasn’t mentioned was he? So it might not be a factor but at the same time we have to take the good with the bad. Who really cares what some idiots in the media say? Everyone knows that they’re trying to do their job too and doing their job means writing articles on the most high profiles athletes possible, he obviously fits that description. If anyone here let’s this non story take anything away from them then I say shame on you!

If anything this past year proves that Arod is one of the greatest players to ever play the game and he did it cleanly and we were all rewarded for it, that is all…

Forget that. Think about the stinging slights now being salved over by LOHUD superstars Melky Cabrera and Brett Gardner.

Serious question, although it may not seem like it…

What drives the two of you to act professional? In contrast to, not all, but many other NY based media members?

    Repost:

Alex had a great post-season, but he was not MVP. If he was and the President didn’t mention him, maybe I’d be curious as to why.

But he was not talking about on-field contributions; he was talking about off-field contributions in every case (with the exception of Jeter and Jeter is Jeter, after all.)

Should CC feel slighted? He wasn’t mention and he just rebuilt a ballfield in his hometown. And the President credited the entire team for HOPE Week.

I think the President could touch upon only so much. And he is big on volunteerism and giving back. Teixeira was used as an example because he’s a local boy, plus the story was about, pretty much, using his first payday to set up a scholarship. Posada was mentioned because the President actually met him and his wife.

People need to stop being so petty.

If you want to get nit-picky, just about every player on every team has set up charities, funded scholarships, etc. It’s not just the Yankees who do it. I’m proud they do, but they didn’t invent the idea.

An ARod looked happy as a clam just to be there.

In a previous thread you asked about the relationship between the Mind and Pitching.

I researched that very question during the great Joba debates.

The best information I could find came from “The Journal of Applied Sports Psychology”.

There were a few studies on the topic but all seemed to be from the college level rather than at the professional level.

If you are really interested you could start your search there.

    There was nothing definitive.

Hope that helps a little. :)

Toronto left-hander Dana Eveland(notes) (2-0, 1.93) may present a challenge if he continues his strong April, but Eveland is coming off his shortest outing of 2010, allowing three runs and eight hits in 5 1-3 innings of the Blue Jays’ 4-3 win over Kansas City on Tuesday.

Let’s hope Dana will have a brilliant outing.

    Doreen-

I completely agree with your post. To say this was a “slight” is to almost equate Alex Rodriguez status as a superstar baseball player with the stature of the Presidency.

The President is not compelled in any way to acknowledge the performance of a professional athlete. He’s just not.

The focus on the event was on volunteer activities and on off field issues.

And in the end, Alex’s use of steroids did damage his persona. There are going to be some repercussions to that.

Was this one of them? Who knows. It’s just speculation that as usual tries to make Alex the story that dwarfs the team.

And it’s not like Alex did anything in anyway to actively draw attention to himself.

Alex also still hasn’t talked to the Feds about Galea yet. Maybe that’s why he wasn’t acknowledged. I can’t see a President being real keen on publicly acknowledging someone prosecutors are trying to interview for an investigation.

    Who knows.

But it’s only a story if one chooses to elevate Alex over the team. And it’s not like Alex is trying to do that in any way.

As far as players that support charities and organizations, I’d say that Rodriguez has done some pretty decent things in supporting U of M, Boys and Girls Clubs and the Hooten Foundation. He doesn’t need me to be his drum beater, but, it’s not like he hasn’t given back to anything. Like all of the other players, I’m sure he supports other players’ foundations and charites, too.

Disclaimer: Just an amusing anecdote that should no way be interpreted as this posters feelings about Matsui being a Yankee or not…..

“The Angels admire not only Hideki Matsui’s clutch hitting, but also his sense of humor.

When Matsui flies out to the warning track, he often will return to the dugout and say, “Home run in Yankee Stadium.” Other times, he will poke fun at himself, saying, “No pop.”

  40. CB April 26th, 2010 at 5:24 pm

“also forgot to mention the “Curse of Teixeira” as tweeted by Sox owner John Henry last year.”

You mean the “Curse of MT?” That’s what was so great about that nonsense. If I remember correctly Henry didn’t even write out Tex’s name. Instead he used shorthand text message type language akin to what a teen ager would do. Henry the hip tweeter “diminished” the lost free agent to “MT” and microblogging.

I’d almost forgot about that “curse.” That worked out well for John.

“As far as players that support charities and organizations, I’d say that Rodriguez has done some pretty decent things in supporting U of M, Boys and Girls Clubs and the Hooten Foundation.”

Sure. In no way is anyone questioning what he does off the field. But if that’s the parameter for the President to be talking about the player then he could have talked about a lot of players, including CC.

And ultimately the President already made public comment about Alex.

Did reporters expect him to be embraced now?

It’s only a “slight” or some big story if one was expecting Alex to be a focal point of the ceremony at the white house.

There wasn’t some compelling reason for him to be given the contexts.

He’s under the biggest microscope that Selig and the media has available to monitor his behavior. It’s time to let it go, but, most people can’t do that. There’s a better chance that Ted Kaczynski gets a Presidential Pardon than Rodriguez gets a stay of execution from Yankee fans or the media.

  68. MTU (aka GBURL) April 26th, 2010 at 5:39 pm

I was curious to know Phil might do after pitching his gem last time, i.e. What was the Likelihood that it would lead to another excellent performance the next time out ?

I checked to see what both Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz, and Ubaldo Jiminez did following their no no’s.

    Results below:

Lester after his had a subpar performance against Oakland.
He pitched just 5 innings giving up 3 earned runs with 7 hits and only 3 K’s.

Buchholz pitched in relief after his and went 3 innings giving up no runs and getting the win. So he was relatively sharp over a short stint.

Jiminez Was very sharp in his next start Going over 7 innings and shutting out the nats on 5 hits.

So there really wasn’t any pattern in the very small sample.

I suppose I could have looked at some post 1 hitter performance, and included a few more no no’s.

Anyone who feels like completing the research project be my guest.

Good luck to PH tues. :)

LMAO!! I hope that day never becomes a reality! :P

By the way, I dont think Obama snubbed ARod!

I was just referring to why ARod should, at the very least, be admired by non Yankees fans and media members. The same way Bill Belichick is.

Belichick is a genius of a coach, he is willing to make the tough decisions that other coaches dont have the chutzpah to make.

But he, as well as ARod, cheated the game. And since most people accuse ARod of cheating on his wife also, Belichick did the same.

I dont like Belichick, but I certainly admire him. His decision against the Colts to for that 4th down this year, though it did not work, was absolutely the right decision. And NO OTHER COACH would have had the brains or chutzpah to make that call.

I have not read through the comments from today yet and I am sure I am little late on this, but are the Phillies nuts? Howard is not even the best player on his team. He is barely even a full time player with how bad he is vs LHP.

This is the kind of deal that sends shockwaves through major league baseball. It is just going to completely throw the market out of whack especially for 1B for foreseeable future. This is not only a terrible deal for the Phillies but they really screwed a lot of teams in MLB.

Good thing, this is not going to have a big impact on the Yankees because they already have Tex and Alex locked up long term. Tex’s deal may actually look like a bargain when Pujols, Prince, and Adrian sign.

Good thing Theo and John Henry got on their high horses, set a line on Tex, and refused to budge. That 10 million they “saved” by not upping their ante on Tex is going to end up costing them a hell of a lot more than that. Another brilliant move by boy genius and the braintrust.

I feel so bad for ARod.

Imagine: he must be all alone in his hotel room now, wiping tears with $100 bills.

  80. Sprinters don't slide April 26th, 2010 at 5:49 pm

Is it really a story that the prez “snubbed” arod? I am not sure there is any story here? Is there??

  81. Carl April 26th, 2010 at 5:49 pm

Now its controversy according to ESPN.

  82. CR9 April 26th, 2010 at 5:51 pm

    Wheels on Meals

I actually do feel bad for Alex for having to wipe his tears (at the unprofessionalism of the media) with his $252 million.

He earned every bit of it! Steroids, or not!

  83. Nick in SF April 26th, 2010 at 5:52 pm

UPDATE: To add insult to injury, it is now being reported that Rahm Emmanual gave Arod the evil eye. Developing Story!

  84. MTU (aka GBURL) April 26th, 2010 at 5:53 pm

    LGY-

Good point. If the Sox want A-Gon they are going to pay thru the nose. I doubt they they have the wherewithal to pull off that trade in any event but if they do it will be cash in the hedge fund time.

It’s fun watching the sox try to find the handle.

Like a greased pig wrestling contest. :)

  85. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 26th, 2010 at 5:54 pm

    So what did Kay say?

I refuse to read anything that ESPN or other media outlets have to say about it – ignorance is bliss.. I’m sure Alex doesn’t care…and that’s all that counts

  86. MTU (aka GBURL) April 26th, 2010 at 5:55 pm

I liked your “Being There” refrence earlier.

It’s one of my favorite movies.

“I like to watch”, baseball that is ! :)

I didn’t see too many pictures where AJ was standing; most of the pics were centered where Phil was (yay!…….players off to the right were sort of cut off.

I think good people do bad things but that doesn’t mean they are bad people. Having close friends and family members who struggled with dependency problems and all that entails taught me that lesson.

I think the media piling on gets real old and find it inflammatory that a media who accuses Alex of trying to be bigger than the team then goes out of their way to make him bigger than the team.

I find it annoying when my husband thinks he knows what I’m thinking and we’ve been together for 20+ years. I also find it annoying when the media thinks they know what a player is thinking or feeling. Usually says more about the psyche of the interpretter than the interpretee.

  100. m April 26th, 2010 at 6:05 pm

    pat,

Are you talking about Alex or GB7?

    I kid, I kid. :P

  101. pat April 26th, 2010 at 6:05 pm

Ledger_Yankees An anti-Yankee tone from the president? Says Jeter: “He better be careful with that. There are a lot of Yankees fans who vote.” #NYY

  102. GreenBeret7 April 26th, 2010 at 6:05 pm

From Marchand’s ESPN site: His contribution to stupidity

“Two guys who weren’t mentioned by the President were striking. If you are known to have used PEDs, you didn’t get singled out by the President. So no Alex Rodriguez or Andy Pettitte mentions.”

  103. CR9 April 26th, 2010 at 6:08 pm

Truly, what kind of sick despicable human being actually writes that on a day of celebration and honor….

Andy Pettitte, with hopefully no arguments from any of you, is one of the classiest, stand up athletes in all of sports. A true family man, philanthropist, and magnificent human being. He made a mistake twice…

  104. pat April 26th, 2010 at 6:10 pm

    m

No not GB. He’s more in the bad person who does good things category.

I kid because I love, GB.

  105. Betsy - Hughes rules (pleading the Fifth) April 26th, 2010 at 6:11 pm

Andrew Marchand needs to go toremedial English if he thinks that just because Obama didn’t mention Alex or Andy, it’s because of PEDs. By that token, CC, AJ, and every other Yankee must have used PEDs because they weren’t mentioned.

This is the stupidest non-story I have ever come across; the media continues to make themselves look like as ses.

  106. Jennifer April 26th, 2010 at 6:13 pm

Again what a clown 4 players were named out of the 26 and Andrew focuses on that. I’ll say this he fits right in with ESPN. Also trying to make a story where there is none. Is this idiot going to run to Alex and Andy tomorrow to ask how they felt about being snubbed?

  107. GreenBeret7 April 26th, 2010 at 6:15 pm

I’ve done a lot of things that I’m not proud of and would change it in a heartbeat, but, you can’t undo it after it’s done. You can only correct your behavior and not repeat it. I don’t care what players do off the field. That’s their business. The only thing I care about is what they do on the field. I’m not talking performance. I’m talking effort. That’s what I pay my money to see. Not who somebody is sleeping with or who likes who or who gives to what charity.

  108. pat April 26th, 2010 at 6:15 pm

So using that logic, Mariano, Derek, Jorge and Mark are the only ones on the team who didn’t use PEDs?

  109. Doreen - GTLU Standings & Rules April 26th, 2010 at 6:16 pm

    GB7 -

    That’s just bs.

This is what I think. How many people watched this thing live? We did, because, well, we’re certifiable. But most people will just read accounts of what happened.

Basically the media can choose to spin whatever story they like.

IF you watched, you knew the President didn’t spend a huge portion of his day on this. It took longer for the Yankees to file in and get settled and to wait for the President to appear than it took for the President to speak.

He singled out Teixeira, Jeter, Posada and HOPE Week. That leaves an awful lot of people he did not single out. This had nothing to to with PEDs. NOTHING.

But if you did not watch this, you are clueless about what transpired. And you are at the mercy of what is hand-fed you by the media who happen to have an agenda.

  118. GreenBeret7 April 26th, 2010 at 6:22 pm

Doreen, I can’t believe that somebody who most likely was in the media glob in the White House and obviously knew this was being televised would be stupid enough to put that crap in print. It doesn’t say much for the survival of the legitimate media business.

  119. Shame Spencer April 26th, 2010 at 6:22 pm

Wow, you know what, last week I think a lot of posters here probably could have been considered a *bit* paranoid because of the way they were talking about Arod and how he is treated by the media.. but after this, could anyone really deny it??!

I mean, maybe we’ve gotten that one rare story that combines 2 of the most controversial people on the planet as I still can’t tell if this is controversial because its Obama or Arod.. but geez!!

Pat M. She was one of the most beautiful women in the country…still is. a very sweet, warm person. she spent hours after hours in the hospitals in Vietnam after 8 hours of travelling from camp to camp doing shows. she went out to firebases that Bob Hope wouldn’t go to. I met her at a book signing and showed her a picture taken at the firebase and asked her to sign it. The security said it was not allowed, ony the book. She signed it anyway and talked for 5 minutes while everyone waited. She’d be a southern belle if she had been born down here. All LADY.

Amen GB! It seems like America is no more than a voyuer these days! It is disgusting. It is easy to trash someone else, but when the mirror is on themselves they squirm & whine. I wish the merits were weighed based on results. Of course cheating to get the results AKA Bellicheat, should be brought to light by the league. But I could care less about who he sleeps with.

Pat, a lot of people always wrote her off as just another body, but she could sing, dance act, and had no problems making fun of how people thought of her. I have about 50-60 of her songs on the computer. some are ok, some are good and some are great. List to “Last Date” (with Floyd Cramer on piano) or “What Am I supposed To Do”. Not a great range or volumn, but, a Shelley Fabres or Claudine Longet-type of voice. She had guys…old crusty first sergeants that were WWII vets crying at the firebases.
