Change of pace

As usual, the Yankees are taking some early batting practice on the day after an off day on the road. Robinson Cano just took his hacks. Now it’s Francisco Cervelli’s turn. Nick Swisher and Curtis Granderson are standing around the cage. Looks like Jorge Posada is about to go through some catching punishment drills with Tony Pena.
Still no word on the lineup, but there is word that Nick Johnson has made a change.
Today he changed his uniform number from 26 to 36, which was the number he originally wore with the Yankees from 2002 to 2003. In that time, the number 36 has been worn by five players.
Tom Gordon (’04-’05), Mike Myers (’06-’07), Jim Brower (’07), Ian Kennedy (’07) and Edwar Ramirez (’08-’09).
Ramirez wore the number this spring.

That puts Phil at a pretty major disadvantage tonight (unless he flew to Baltimore while the Yankees were playing on Sunday….
Hopefully the number change will bring NJ good luck
Let’s just hope it brings him better luck!
GTLU still open???? If so…
Jeter – SS
Johnson – DH
Teixeira – 1B
Rodriguez – 3B
Cano – 2B
Posada – C
Granderson – CF
Swisher – RF
Gardner – LF
I wonder why he didn’t take that number to begin with? And let’s hope it helps.
Because of the problems I encountered today, please check this list of people who submitted lineups to GTLU. If you submitted a lineup and your name is not there, please let me know. Thanks so much.

I’ll take it today, because of the issues I had. But GTLU closes at 3 for a night game.
Gammons on with Francessa -
Said the Sox won’t feel pressured to do anything this summer if they are fading out of it… said they won’t trade Kelly at all and won’t put together a package of 3-4 players to get Gonzalez AND sign him to a Ryan Howard deal.
Said they will wait until the off-season to re-tool with payroll coming off and will be big after Crawford.
Doreen-
I thought the cut-off was when the lineup was posted OR 4 PM, not 3 PM.
If I can still get in for today……
Jeter SS
Johnson DH
Tex 1B
A Rod 3B
Cano 2B
Posada C
Granderson Cf
Swisher RF
Gardner LF
Gammons also sounded pretty down on the Sox. Said it is a bad sign that a guy like Scott Atchiston and Delcarmen are pitching so many innings for them early and if the rotation doesn’t turn around, they can’t compete with TB and NY.
miggs -
I’ll take it today. But 3 p.m. for a night game that starts at 7-ish.
Got it Doreen.
Thank you for making an exception.
Wow, is he sure about that number? It’s not been exactly equated with sucess that past few years, as displayed above.

Pat M.
i don’t think it’s denial to feel that the RedSux won’t be players this season for neither the division nor the wild card.
The Yanks and the Rays barring injury are both 94+ win teams and head to head are better than the Sux who can’t beat the Rays even when they are bad and have lost 10 of 12 to the Yanks dating back to last July.
If Joe G manages that C.C. game to open the season a lil better we would have swept them.
How then can they contend for the wild card?
Francesca NEVER mentions the Yankees….strange breed of Yankee fan.
champ809 April 27th, 2010 at 3:19 pm
Dionar Navarro got suspended for 2 games and Jaso is the only other C on the 25 man….rather than make a roster move for 2 games Sean Rodriguez will be the back-up catcher
“Francesca NEVER mentions the Yankees….strange breed of Yankee fan.”
What are you talking about? He talks about them everyday.
If you’re referring to the Gammons interview, why don’t you wait for it to be over before critiquing it?
miggs -
You’re welcome.
Betsy,
He generally focuses on negatives and not much you can attack on the Yankees. I don’t really agree with it but it has been a successful practice for Francessa.
Phil is young and resilient, better for him to pitch than Andy…remember those all nighters from college!
I wouldn’t write any team off this early in the season, but I am guessing the Rays finish in 2nd place, ahead of the sox
Francessa doesn’t talk about the Yanks because he’s been WRONG about pretty much everything concerning them for the last 3 yrs…..you know Mike will NEVER admit when he’s wrong.
“Said they will wait until the off-season to re-tool with payroll coming off and will be big after Crawford”
That makes twice I’ve heard him pushing that lately. I would have guessed the Sox would be going after Werth–they really need some power and he seems like a great fit for their park. I think there is great potential for Crawford to end up being considerably overpaid and it seems like this ‘Boston after Crawford’ theme is being put out there to further encourage the Yankees to make him a massive offer.
Sweet. Thanks for the all the work you put into this Doreen!!!
Miggs-
Doreen added a GTLU calendar to her blog, so if you ever have a question about the submission window you can check it out there
Giambi and Champ – so true.
Well, we know that Kelly isn’t going anywhere, lol. Bidding war for Crawford? What a dream that is for him, the Sox and Yanks going at it.

Why? DC is a half hour from Baltimore. I’m pretty sure Hughes was able to get a good nights rest if he wanted to.

Doreen really stepped up to the plate big time with her management of GTLU.
I thought no one could duplicate the meticulous attention given to GTLU like Erica, but Doreen is really bringing the thunder.
I would use the phrase “big shoes to fill” but given how Erica talks about how big her feet are in real life, I’m not sure if my attempt at humor would be taken literally or figuratively.

Phil most likely went back a day or more early.
Werth is 2 years older than Crawford. Has a ton of power though and plays pretty good defense.
I guess I don’t see how Crawford fits a need for the RS.
They have 3 OF now and one real need is a power bat.
My quote of the day on the Stupidest Things Ever Said Calendar comes courtesy of Tim McCarver-

Doreen really has done an awesome job.
I tried the best I could, but sadly my fulltime job and pesky employer didn’t appreciate GTLU quite as much as the blog did
“I guess I don’t see how Crawford fits a need for the RS.”
Is this serious? The Red Sox play baseball, that’s why they have a need for Carl Crawford.
Every team in baseball “needs” Carl Crawford. I can’t think of one team in the league that wouldn’t put him in their starting lineup tomorrow.
Okay, let’s try that again:
web.mac.com/vanessaclaire1011/iWeb/Site/GTLU.html
Stan, if Phil flew in with the rest of the team, he’s on the same schedule as they are.
Boston IMO will be full speed ahead for Werth. Crawford too perhaps if only to cause the Yanks to go higher. I am sure the RSox are wishing they had gone head over heals for Adrian Gonzalez. He is really going to cost them to get him if they do which I doubt they will.
Ray, I would have assumed so…….but I wasn’t sure because of the day off on Monday.
How is Phil at a disadvantage?
Erica-

It better than using your mug like a mitt.

I could NEVER fill Erica’s shoes!!
Seriously, I have the time and I love having the opportunity to learn something new. And I tend to get carried away with things.
The Calendar was Erica’s suggestion; the percentages were Nick in SF’s.
You gotta give the people what they want!
Doreen seems to be a very accommodating GTLU host.
The last one? Not so much.
I’m kidding Erica. You were and still are awesome!
By the way, have you seen Johnny’s new haircut?

I agree! Crawford is a starter on every team. He will just be an expensive addition!
Line-up’s out….
benshpigel
#yanks vs #orioles: jeter, gardner, tex, a-rod, cano, posada, grandy, swish (dh), winn (rf), hughes sp
Anybody get that???
Werth hit 36 HRs last year and walked 90 times. He is a perfect fit for the middle of that lineup. He is a good defensive player and also stole 20 bases.
Makes no sense for them to raid their farm and hand out a $200 million dollar deal, when they can get Werth for about half the cost and no prospects. He gives them the power they need.
whoa. Winn for the curveball there.
Johnny was so jealous of Swisher stealing his role in the Yankee clubhouse that he… did that? I mean come on, not a single person on the planet thinks that haircut is attractive, professional, or cool…
New Post- Lineup: Another day off for Johnson
Werth will have other suitors as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Yanks went all out to get him too.

Look at the whole post. The biggest need they have is a power bat. It seems out of character for the RS to sign two big contracts, but I could be wrong.
Nice, with Gardner batting 2nd I’m totally playing him today.
Winn’s got a lot of goose eggs on his stat line. Only 10 PA’s but please get a walk or something to break up those zeroes!
The Soxs are not looking good and their off season moves don’t make sence. They should have paid Bay not Cameron and Beltre. They should have gotten a younger catcher and played Vmart and Lowell at 1b with Youk at 3B. The one good move they made was Lackey but that cost big $$. I still would not count them out in 2010 though…
Crawford does not make sence for the Sox in 2011; they need a righty power guy.
Crawford will be a Yankee in 2011 if he is still around after the Yanks work out deals with Mo, Jeter, and a FA starting pitcher. The Yankees will not over pay for Crawford though as illistrated by the Damon dealings.
MaineYankee – Sure, a power bat is their “biggest” need, but Crawford would also technically “be” a power hitter playing half his games in Fenway. They could also get Mike Cameron or Glass Drew out of their lineup on a regular basis.
