A meal between friends

While the Yankees were in California, Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated got Derek Jeter, Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera and Jorge Posada together for lunch. Turns out, it was the first time those four had eaten together when they weren’t part of a larger group.

The result was this week’s Sports Illustrated cover story, a recorded conversation between the four longtime teammates.

The link above is for an online bonus section not in the magazine, but SI did pass along some excerpts from the magazine piece, including this one.

Jeter: What it comes down to is that I never have to worry about these guys being ready to play.

Pettitte: It’s all about trust.

Jeter: I mean, it never crosses my mind. I don’t have to worry about them. I know they know how to win. I know that’s the only thing they care about. They don’t care about their personal stats.

Rivera: No egos. No jealousy.

    Dissing A-Rod I see.

I can’t wait to pick up a copy!

    I ♥ the cover :D

Jetes is great but he will be 36 this summer, I just hope the extension is not too long to hurt the franchise like AROD’s deal will probably do on the back end

Randy, that makes an awful lot of sense. I know Eiland has said in the past that it was like pulling teeth to get Phil to throw the change, but that was when he didn’t have a decent change to work with. I don’t believe Phil is stubborn or that he was blowing smoke in ST when he said he thought the change was important to him and I hope he does work it in. Again, he did throw it against the Angels; last night was just not a good night for him in terms of command. If it’s as much of a feel pitch as people say, the odds of him breaking off a good one were probably slim.

I like your golf analogy; short term loss for long term gain, huh?

I’m trying not to obsess about the change and instead concentrate on all the progress Phil has shown this year.

I’m sorry but they all look a bit too “happy” on that cover

  7. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 28th, 2010 at 12:50 pm

LGY, I understand what you are saying……I think brutal was too strong, but I do understand the point Chad was trying to make.

That is a fantastic cover; unfortunately, I doubt the stores in my area will have it out yet. I’m tempted to read the article on-line, but I’m not sure I want to do that.

These guys all love each other a great deal and I think that shows; they are truly remarkable.

    re-post:

I haven’t seen anyone make the counter-argument that teams like the Orioles are incapable of beating teams like the Yankees. Has it happened? There are commenters on here who seem personally offended that the Yankees don’t sweep every series with clearly inferior teams; oh well. But two nights ago people were chastised for suggesting that the Blue Jays weren’t as good as their (then) winning record. Something about the ‘hear and now’ and not ‘living in the future’. Weren’t they just looking beyond the box scores too?

  10. CR9 April 28th, 2010 at 12:52 pm

Thats the BEST PICTURE Ive ever seen.

The way Jeetie is half grinning is just AWESOME!!!

  11. Mark in Tampa April 28th, 2010 at 12:53 pm

I think he used “brutal” to describe the physical and emotional toll that the effort took on Hughes.

  12. CR9 April 28th, 2010 at 12:54 pm

How much more beautiful are the 4 of them for just having worn Pinstripes! I mean, seriously?!

  13. LGY April 28th, 2010 at 12:55 pm

    Trisha,

I commend you for trying to get involved and help with animal law. But, I do hope for the sake of your mental health that you have the same thick skin in the real world that you demonstrate here. I have spoken with people involved in animal law and even the “positive results” are often extremely disheartening. The legislature across the country is just miles behind any rudimentary understanding of justice that many people hold in regards to animals. Here in NY, Christine Quinn has struck down every proposed pro-animal legislation since taking over as Speaker of the NY City Council.

You may end up being much happier offering your services to a group/organization that aims to change/improve legislation for animal welfare.

I want to get the magazine just for the cover. I bought last year’s mag with Mariano on the cover. It’s a perfect, perfect cover picture.

  15. Mark in Tampa April 28th, 2010 at 12:57 pm

“How much more beautiful are the 4 of them for just having worn Pinstripes! I mean, seriously?!”

Not only that, it’s really cool that they wore their uniforms to go out to lunch in SoCal! Bet that didn’t get any looks. :)

  16. Jerkface April 28th, 2010 at 12:57 pm

Brutal as a descriptor doesn’t imply any lack of skill or talent, but more the circumstances in which the game was played. It was a very apt word because Hughes was battling every hitter, they fouled off a ton of pitches and he never got a groove.

If CC guts out a 6 inning win , it could be described as brutal.
If CC loses a game and is out by the 3rd it could be described as brutal.
A pitcher cruising through 7 who gives up 1 or 2 runs then loses would probably not be described as brutal.

  17. m April 28th, 2010 at 12:58 pm

Loved it when Jorge pointed out that Rivera is older. Wanted to make sure the record straight on that.

And taking a picture at the end of each season is the sweetest thing.

And I like that they addressed [West's] comments.

    _______________________________________________________

    Repost:

Thanks for the links earlier. The Jorge article was hilarious.

Flipping through the channels last night and had a shocker. Hair and Kristen Chenowith (sp?) were belting it out under the sheets. Not a good scene.

I do like the storyline with the femme kid/jock though. Greg’s b-i-l from “Yes, Dear” was a pleasant surprise. Femme’s getting on my nerves with his neediness. And his loathing of sports. :P

And you just knew what song mercedes was going to sing. It was great, though. It’s still a beautiful song.

I didn’t realize we lost 3 straight. Remember how people moaned and groaned when they found out we had signed Chan Ho Park? They’re missing his presence imo.

RAB has an article on a semi-quasi-catchers controversy. Nothing earth-shattering that we haven’t noticed over the past year.

    CC is the stopper tonight.

  18. Betsy - Hughes rules (Pleading the Fifth) April 28th, 2010 at 12:59 pm

Jerkface, I would consider that a brutal loss for that pitcher, lol – but I know what you mean.

I understand and agree to some extent; I also think he probably got a good night’s sleep last night as he undoubtedly was physically and mentally exhausted.

  19. Nick in SF in Rohnert Park, CA April 28th, 2010 at 1:01 pm

Good points about ‘Brutalgate’ in the last thread and this one.

Also, it’s all relative. Just like called a team with a bad record “bad” is relative. The worst team in baseball is staffed with some of the finest baseball players on the planet. Most people understand that.

  20. Jerkface April 28th, 2010 at 1:03 pm

    Betsy,

The meaning of brutal that I think most applies to baseball is: taxing, demanding, or exhausting: They’re having a brutal time making ends meet.

The others imply a kind of animalistic cruelty that would be more at home on a football field than Soccer. (You can’t really hit a brutal homerun, though I suppose you can brutalize a pitch)

Cruising and then losing your lead would be more heart breaking, or something implying a loss of morale. I don’t see the brutal descriptor fitting there. You can use whatever word you like, but I just wanted to explain the thought process here.

  21. Jerkface April 28th, 2010 at 1:04 pm

I meant, football field than baseball. had football on the brain. (both kinds)

Teixeira laid a brutal hit on the catcher. Hughes had a brutal outing. Different connotations.

  22. jennifer April 28th, 2010 at 1:04 pm

Kurt’s (the femme character) neediness got to me and my husband, too. Both of us remarked that he got no sympathy at all from us last night, and it was starting to annoy us! Maybe that’s what they’re aiming for??? Chenoweth, by the way, with the “e.” :)

  24. HenryfromDC April 28th, 2010 at 1:06 pm

Poor Bernie. If he was a few years younger, it would’ve been the Core Five everyone is talking about.

  25. m April 28th, 2010 at 1:06 pm

Brutal means really bad. And that would describe Robertson’s outing last night.

I could see what Chad might have meant, but there are better ways to describe it because as someone pointed out other pitchers (cough-Javy) have been brutal.

Would I be a bad mom/wife if I went to Lakewood to see the Blue Claws play the Yankees’ Charleston team all by myself? It’s a Wednesday game at 11:05. I could get there watch the game and get back before my daughter gets home from school.

I’ve never gone to a game by myself.

Brutal means more than that (and thats a slang meaning anyways, and there are various other slang meanings that are not ‘very bad’).

    It was a proper usage.

  33. Bronx Jeers April 28th, 2010 at 1:14 pm

On last nights radio broadcast, Susan told a nice story about Mo.

The team was at Walter Reade and one particular wounded soldier being a Sox fan had his dad send him his old Sox hat in anticipation. The kid wanted to wear it I guess. Susan said he stood out as the model of the hat was quite old and she said she hadn’t seen it in many years. Anyway she talked to the kid and introduced him to Mariano.

So the kid and Mariano begin a discussion and I guess it evolved into something a bit more than the standard chat. Knowing Mariano it may have delved into faith but anyway at some point the kid remembers that he’s wearing a Sox hat and probably gets embarrassed and decides that he should probably take the hat off and out of view.

And of course Mo being Mo, he notices this and tells the kid that he shouldn’t put the hat away. Tells him that if the Sox are his favorite team then he should be proud of that and he shouldn’t feel the need to hide the hat.

I’m telling you that Mariano is more than just a special athlete.

And that wounded kid? He may be a Sox fan but now he’s definitely a Mariano fan as well. How could you not be?

    Good grief.

I seem to recall the Yanks losing 2 of 3 last year at the Stadium to the Nationals.

Somehow, someway, the Yanks were able to overcome it and win the WS.

The Yanks will be fine. The O’s and Dave Trembley, however, will not be.

    m,

Personally I do not use brutal to mean really bad and I do not hear it used that way.

For example, if I go to a restaurant the service could be brutal or I could say it was brutal having to wait so long for a table.

But, I would never say the food was brutal if it tasted really bad.

Face, I do understand the term in it’s baseball connotation…..However, as far as I can recall, Chad has never used it prior in that context……And we clearly know that there’s been times since late September ( when he took over the blog ) when that term could have been used…….As far as I’m concerned it’s a done deal for me, I apologized publicly for the censorship misunderstanding…..The next time a pitcher has to tough one out let’s see if that term is applied……I can assure you that Chad would never refer to a Sabathia outing as brutal when he busted his tail on the mound to keep his team in the game……Or any veteran pitcher for that matter…..If he did, it’d be a long time before he’ll ever get a quote from him again

You can’t honestly believe that. Brutal just doesn’t have the negative connotation that I think you guys are placing on it. Even a good outing can be brutal. The yankees lineup is brutal because you work harder facing them There are a lot of lineups that will hit for average, or hit for power, but not many lineups which will see more pitches or are the whole package.

I could see what Chad might have meant, but there are better ways to describe it because as someone pointed out other pitchers (cough-Javy) have been brutal.

    Xxxxxx

Brutal was an appropriate description. Hughes struggled with his command all night, but somehow managed to work his way through it. It was “brutal” in the sense that the outing was a struggle, yet the end result was good — which shows how much Hughes has matured as a pitcher.

As far as Chad being biased and/or unduly critical against Hughes in other instances, I’d like some examples. Because I don’t see it.

  67. Doreen - GTLU Standings & Rules April 28th, 2010 at 1:35 pm

    Erica -

I used to love food shopping. The reason I no longer enjoy it is solely due to the fact that the closest supermarket is annoying the devil out of me. Never enough registers open; poor meat & fish departments; it’s ALWAYS crowded with people who are home every day and shop every day for about a bag’s worth of groceries, but who crowd the aisle and don’t hear you when you politely tell them “excuse me,” but who get very upset if you have to raise the volume of your voice.

My favorite supermarkets are over 20 minutes away and I don’t always want to drive that far.

    m -

I really enjoy glee overall, but I do agree that some of the themes are over-the-top for me and that madonna episode made me extremely uncomfortable.

  68. Moe April 28th, 2010 at 1:35 pm

Some people are just WAY too sensitive about criticism of one of their favorite players….

I think my husband used to like that I loved baseball and that I could at least try to like other sports and have actually grown to enjoy college basketball to some degree. But on Sunday, after the game, I watched the post-game and then the Joe Girardi show, and, well, he didn’t. :) I pointed out to him that I watch a lot of thing with him that I don’t necessarily like, but, he doesn’t need the magazine aspect of baseball, just the game.

The fact that Chad used the word in that context made it even more understandable.

Hughes had brutal command, labored and through a lot of pitches, didn’t put hitters away, barely got any swings and misses, and by his own admission, didn’t feel good and his stuff dictated that.

Yet despite all that, Hughes threw 5.2 innings of 1 run.

What did Chad say that was so wrong? Everything about Hughes yesterday could be categorized as ‘brutal’ except the results (which is all that matters, but that is not what we are arguing).

  76. Jay April 28th, 2010 at 1:42 pm

Joba had many outings like Hughes did yesterday (lots of pitches, labored, walked more than he Kd, but somehow limited the damage) and many here including Pete categorized it as brutal.

Hughes actual pitching WAS brutal. What was good about his performance yesterday aside from the fact that he limited damage?

  77. Jerkface April 28th, 2010 at 1:42 pm

And Pat M has been the only person to notice this hidden hughes vendetta that Chad has, so i really wonder what comments Chad made that spurred the accusation where using the word brutal was the last straw.

    “Trisha,

I commend you for trying to get involved and help with animal law. But, I do hope for the sake of your mental health that you have the same thick skin in the real world that you demonstrate here. I have spoken with people involved in animal law and even the ?positive results? are often extremely disheartening. The legislature across the country is just miles behind any rudimentary understanding of justice that many people hold in regards to animals. Here in NY, Christine Quinn has struck down every proposed pro-animal legislation since taking over as Speaker of the NY City Council.

You may end up being much happier offering your services to a group/organization that aims to change/improve legislation for animal welfare.”

LGY, all excellent points. When I asked Dr. Finocchio (head of our SPCA) about lobbying for stronger laws, he said that we already had the laws in place and the problem was that nobody bothers enforcing them. He said that even though animal abuse carries penalties of up to three years in prison plus fines up to $1500 (I think it’s 1500), most of the time the person will get a slap on the wrist, some minor fine if any, and 10 hours of community service. He said the judges don’t want to be bothered with it, the police realize that they are wasting their time when they investigate because they know not much is going to be done about it, and city solicitors consider it a nuisance when compared to the other things they have to handle.

I thought that if I could become the major advocate, I could spend the time and press the judges and others involved and maybe start to get examples set so that other depraved losers who would hurt animals might think twice about it.

It may be all pie in the sky. And you are right about being thick skinned. I don’t know that I would be able to remain detached enough that I wouldn’t take my disappointments home with me. I guess I would have to find out.

Thanks though. I think I’ll now get back to the letters I have to write on behalf of my elderly clients.

    :)

Not that I enjoy arguing about this, but the fact that Phil only gave up one run seems to be an an afterthought.

Just the wording, not even the word.

It’s nitpicking, but how about, “Despite being brutal in almost every way, Phil Hughes only gave up 1 run in 5.2 IP”

    I’m done. Seriously. :) I’m over it. Really. :)

Working out of a home office the majority of the week has turned this blog into the “water cooler” of sorts with baseball chatter 365 days a year so the baseball obsession has grown. I blame Pete.

Jerkface, that’s fine; no one’s saying that Chad has to wax poetic. However, as much time was spent on the Oakland performance, I find it interesting that many here were almost as impressed by Phil’s fortitude last night. I guess the bigger story is the pen since Chad led with that, but the bigger picture, the story should be Phil. I find it funny that Joel Sherman praised Pelfrey in his blog a few days ago for doing the same thing Phil did last night, but his blog today focused on the pen – not Phil. It’s just an observation- it doesn’t necessarily mean anything.

Yes the Yankee Clippard has been amongst the league leaders in swing and misses for much of the year and as of yesterday or the day before he was tops in baseball.

Clippard hasn’t thrown many innings so it very well probably changed. But there was an article on clippard in the washington post the other day where they had him as the highest swing and miss rate.

Clippard was up around 41% swing and misses at the time.

So I thought I’d go with it.

I mean how many Yankee Clippard trivia questions can one come up with?

  157. Jake April 28th, 2010 at 2:09 pm

The pen went through a stretch last week when

CC pitched a CG (rain shortened)
AJ went 7 and we had a huge lead
    Andy went 8
    off-day
Vazquez can’t go 6 and we use the pen
    Hughes pitches into the 8th
    CC pitches a CG
    Burnett goes 6
    Andy goes 8

Only 2 of the past 9 games up to that point, have we had to use the pen for more than 2 innings.

If we’re winning games and getting innings, then the pen won’t be used much.

If we’re trailing a lot and the starters are not going deep, like the past 4 games, then the pen will be used a lot.

Jose Contreras, in a likely equally limited sample, has gotten a swing and a miss like 50% of the time 8o

  160. CB April 28th, 2010 at 2:12 pm

As an aside – Clippard really has been terrific coming out of the pen for the Nats.

His stuff has really played up in short stints. He’s now sitting 91-93 on his fastball and that coupled with his change up have made him a very good reliever. Plus he’s so herky jerky he hides the ball well.

He’s a good example of how some young pitchers can surprise you once they get their role and stuff figured out.

Very hard to ever guess that clippard would lead the league in swings and misses when he was a starter and his fastball was around 88-90 and he lacked a polished third pitch.

  161. Doreen - GTLU Standings & Rules April 28th, 2010 at 2:12 pm

    Jake -

It may get to a point where Girardi might have to cut some starts short, no? Just to get the pen in there? Depending on game situation, of course.

I think it’s great that the starters have (a) been so effective, and (b) been stretched out a bit by Girardi, but the pen is probably feeling like the orphan child of the team right now.

‘Struggled’ is different from ‘was brutal’. No one would of said boo if the word struggled was used. Because we all saw Phil struggling. But not all of us thought it was brutal.

    Anyway!

    Betsy,

You asked about pitchers who qualify? Hughes qualifies for neither mlb nor espn. Espn.com does not explain what qualifies mean, but mlb.com indicates that a pitcher must have at least 1 IP per game played by the team. Phil has 18, team has played 19. But how about that BAA? Now that’s brutal!

  165. Eric K April 28th, 2010 at 2:14 pm

  188. CB April 28th, 2010 at 2:29 pm

“They’re not even the best team in New York right now.”

No. Very true. Losing the World Series of April would be brutal.

And comparing the “now” records of a team playing 10 straight games at home out of the first 20 and against the NL with a team on a 9 game road trip including a swing out west seems a sensible way to gauge the two teams.

Nevermind the yankees have far more talent and a better record “now.”

I’m not necessarily talking just about the Yankees, but in general for any AL Team looking to make a push – they could get an absolute slugger in the final year of his contract for the stretch run.

    Melkman …

I visited Progressive when it was the Jake a few years ago. Nice stadium but those Indian fans can be quite rude and boisterious toward the Yankees and their fans…at least when I was there. That drum in the outfield drove me nuts but nowhere as bad as the darn cowbells in Tampa and when I went to see them play the Marlins. I guess cowbells are a Florida thing so that’s another reason I wouldn’t ever move to Florida … lol

I’ve been to 21 different Stadiums …never been to Atlanta tho’. I finally was able to see the Yanks in Fenway last season for the first time…fortunately it was the 20-11 win in August. If I had to pick a game it couldn’t have been better ..those Sox fans were running out of the place faster than a speeding bullet… :) . I didn’t have a problem wearing all my Yankee gear…what could they possibly say…except …”Yankees Suck” ..the usual…haha. It was great !!!

Favorite Stadiums beside Yankee are Wrigley, Camden & Safeco. Least favorite Metrodome, Tropicana (although I love their HOF), Shea (Citi is a HUGE improvement), RFK (gotta see the new Nats place) and whatever they call the Marlins since that name seems to change constantly..lol.

    I’m looking forward to Yanks/Dodgers …can’t wait…

Braden getting rocked does nothing for us.

lol. I just skimmed the article, but the smoking gun may have been Dong?s blog citing her Chinese zodiac sign?

Not to mention she worked at the Beijing olympics and her birthdate in the employee database put her at 14. I think that would be a bigger smoking gun than the blog, who thinks they are going to get away with that?

Thats like robbing a bank, then working at the bank and using your stolen, marked up bills to buy funyuns from the employee cafe.

“Dallas Braden has already marked his personal catwalks in Tampa.”

he’s going to be really ticked off when the A’s play the Rangers and he sees all those signs using his name.

I said I was rooting against the Rays but doesn’t mean I can’t root for Braden and James to both get rocked around and have the A’s pen get the win!
