In case you don’t know, that’s an Associated Press shot of Pettitte, who’s been outstanding this season.

We better beat the crap out of the White Sox this weekend or I will not be happy. Most of my friends are Sox fans and I don’t need to hear any bragging from them.
I have a feeling Javy is going to crap all over the White Sox. He is going to make them look silly.
I guy a work with (big CWS fan) just bet me $5 this morning that Chicago wins the series.
Phil vs. Buehrle is interesting – if they play; rain is in the forecast.
A.J. Burnett is just one of those players who is never going to engender full trust. He spent too much of his career either injured and/or underperforming considering his skill level.
He signed a five-year contract with the Yankees, won a World Series in Year 1 and was worked heavily. That combination made me wonder if he would come back hungry and focused, or if he would come back feeling some place in his mind that it was fine to take a break. I would not have been surprised, therefore, if Burnett took one of those vacations masked as a DL stint: ?Yeah, I know you can?t find an exact injury, but boy does my back hurt.?
But Burnett said something in spring training that really struck me. He explained that it was ridiculous and unacceptable that a pitcher with his skill had managed just to win 100 games overall and be just 100-85 for a decade-long career. He sounded not like a con man, but like a talented pitcher who maybe had a light go on about maximizing that talent.
He is 3-0 with a 2.43 ERA this season. But maybe we should take a step back now and notice that Burnett is actually 34-19 with a 3.94 ERA since the beginning of the 2008 season. So he is 15 games over .500 for that period in a career in which he is just 18 over. More important, the once fragile Burnett has made 72 regular-season starts in that period. Only three pitchers have made more: Detroit?s Justin Verlander and Atlanta?s Derek Lowe, who have 73 each, and his teammate, CC Sabathia, who has 74.
Let?s face it, no one is going to trust Burnett in the same way they trust a true workhorse ace such as Sabathia. But this is not a one-year trend any more. Burnett has been making all of his starts regular since the beginning of the 2008 season.

“I guy a work with (big CWS fan) just bet me $5 this morning that Chicago wins the series.”
Did you ask him if he’d looked at the CWS lineup?
Oops, the Phil/Buerhle comment is mine; the rest is Joel Sherman’s.
I said last year that AJ is just like any other pitcher in terms of health, but people keep waiting for him to fall apart. He’s becoming a very reliable innings-eater for us….and I hope he continues to prove people wrong about him.

Two out of 3 would be great. 3 wins would be amazing
Good stuff Betsy.
It’s true, despite A.J.’s great pitching this year I still don’t trust him out there. I think most fans are thinking that he could blow up at any moment and give up 6 runs in an inning.
However, the more he uses that 2-seam fastball, the more trust I have in him. That’s a great pitch he can go to that will keep the ball on the ground and limit the damage. It’s obvious at this point that he has complete confidence in the pitch. Now if he can work in the change-up some more he’ll be a legitimate 4 pitch pitcher which is pretty astounding.
Does anyone know if WGN is televising tonite’s game ?
I don’t get YES and would rather watch the game on the big screen instead of the computer.
They say something about WCIU.
Is that the same as WGN ?
Thanks.
Good read. First extensive interview Ed Whitson has given to a NY reporter….
“It’s like working in an office and your boss comes in and says, ‘You suck,’ after you’ve tried your best,” Whitson said. “Now multiply that by 50,000 bosses, all of them telling you that you suck, and imagine what that feels like.
“You feel like everybody’s against you, and sometimes you just want to quit. But you can’t ever quit.”

Patrick, I don’t feel that way about AJ – I guess I just accept that many fans do. I thought the point of the blog was about AJ’s innings pitched; IMO, there is no reason to be concerned about him anymore. I believed him in his press conference when he said he learned from Doc how to take care of himself and nothing has changed for me.
Favre is back in the news. Now Pedro Gomez, can come out of witness protection program. ESPN will start a Favre Chan called ESPNFAVRE.

Sorry WGN is showing the Cubs Saturday afternoon. Don’t know what I was looking at.
MTU,
If you own a PS3, you can get the MLB.TV package piped through it to your TV in HD.
I don’t care to hear anymore excuses, it would behoove Vazquez to come out and put up a solid start, especially against the White Sox and Ozzie Guillen who thought little of Vazquez’s guts to come up big.
When you look at our rotation Vazquez is like a sore thumb sticking out
CC Sabathia – 3-1 – 3.12 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 12 ER
A.J. Burnett – 3-0 – 2.43 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 9 ER
Andy Pettitte – 3-0 – 1.29 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 4 ER
Phil Hughes – 2-0 – 2.00 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 4 ER
then we have
Javier Vazquez – 1-3 – 9.00 ERA, 1.80 WHIP, 20 ER, Ugh
i hope wgn shows the saturday game. im in dc and the comcast mlb package blacks out saturday day games because of fox. but they wont block wgn.
on paper javy vs. danks looks awful for us. im going to hold hope for the best.
If 4 out of 5 starting pitchers are rolling and one guy is struggling, that’s not bad at all.
I dont worry about Vazquez. Maybe after another 10 starts then it would concerning but right now its just 4 bad starts.
This schedule is ridiculous. We’ve played 15/21 on the road already – soon to be 21/27?
I smell a conspiracy! Clearly, the schedule makers start us out on the road to try and bury us early. Last laugh will be on them though…we’ve come through this portion of our schedule with playing at a .667 clip.
I have seen over and over posted here things that boil down to “we haven’t really played well”. That’s not really true. Our defense has been absolutely great. Our starting pitching has been OUTSTANDING, three Javy starts notwithstanding. Cano looks like a man on a mission. Posada and Gardner have been great too.
We’re just hoping all that stays together as the bullpen calms down and ARod / Tex begin to hit. If it does, this team is going to be an unstoppable juggernaut.
14-7 against the best teams in the league, mostly on the road. When was the last time we didn’t have to dig out of an April hole? Feels like we have to do that every season.

Cano is hitting .407 with 8 hrs and slugging .790 for the month of April…

Cano is Bondsesque right now!
good stuff.
Would anybody be surprised if he took Garcia deep a couple of times tonight.
MTU, why don’t you go to Best Buy or Wal-Mart’s and by an S-Cable for about $25 and connect your computer to the TV? It takes about 5 minutes to hook it up.

Coming through this stretch with a winning record is pretty good, considering Tex has been invisible, Arod has been mediocre and the lineup has really not clicked and gotten on an extended role the way for example Tampa Bay has been hitting early on.
But baseball is about streaks and nothing lasts forever, Arod and TEx will start hitting, thank goodness for Tex today is the last day of April. Woohoo.
Last April he had .200 AVG, .367 OBP, .371 SLG, .738 OPS, 3 HR, 10 RBI
This April he has .139 AVG, .292 OBP, .266 SLG, .557 OPS, 2 HR, 9 RBI
Last May he had .330 AVG, .391 OBP, .748 SLG, 1.138 OPS, 13 HR, 34 RBI
This May is upon us and Teixeira is about to collect the rent due by the baseball Gods and Law of Averages.
Thanks for the Ed Whitson int. I’ll read that later on.
So is the weather forecast calling for rain in The Bronx today???
Afternoon, Ray. How are things out your way?
I know im obsessed but anyone else care that Jete passed The Hawk and tied Jr. with 2775 hits last night.
When are we going to start the clock?

I Wouldn’t be averted to it if he did,
Would love to see Robbie win the batting title, but long, long, long way to go, but it was mentioned in the past that one day he would, could it be the time is upon us.
The countdown on the Jeter-Meter Hit Clock starts at 2999.
Brett Gardner is hitting .306 with a .380 on base percentage and already has 9 steals out of the 9 spot. In his “part time” play, he already has more runs scored than Granderson.
What a complete failure he’s been, eh?

Now SJ would disagree because he is always right and I’m wrong, but I think AJ was motivated in 2008 since it was a contract year, hit the big time playing in a true baseball town and stepped it up in 2009. In 2010, he realized that he is with the best team/org, and he has talent among the best. He’s going to use that as motivation for the remaining 4 years to make his mark in NYC and baseball.
Damon enjoy 27….think 28 – That Neilsen study was found to be false, it has nothing to do with “most-hated” or anything like that. They took polls of how fans thought their teams were doing this year so far, hence Cleveland and Houston being way up on the list.

The countdown on the Jeter-Meter Hit Clock starts at 2999.

Wow you are telling me that we give more importance to a hallow homerun list, that includes some guys that had no business being there?
Atleast start the Clock at 2800. Since Jeter broke the All-time hit record for a SS, He has 110 hits that was since, Aug 2009. Its not crazy to assume he gets to 3000 in may or earlier.
Pat,
We have them now with Vazquez.
There is always an element of every fan base that borders on the dilusional.
In Whitson’s case, it crossed over to criminal behavior.
Hopefully, the whack jobs that hate Vazquez don’t crossover to that level of behavior.
Jeter’s got 44 guys in front of him on the all time hit list.
Of those 44, only Baines, Biggio, Bonds, Palmiero and of course Pete Rose are not in the HOF.
Behind Jeter on the all time-active list are Pudge, Omar Vizquel and then A-Rod.
I’ll start Jeter’s clock with 1 hit to go, just like I’ll start Rodriguez’ home run clock with 1 homer to go.
Two things:
- Randy L has been talking about Cervelli’s minor league workload, he was scheduled to be the full time AA catcher before he got taken out in spring training. Injuries have held him back from full play time. He caught more games than Montero or Romine did in the minors, but he didn’t have the bat to sit at DH.
- I will be at the game on Sunday, hoping for a Hughes no no to compliment my CC 1 hitter i attended

I agree, im the minority on this but we should celebrate Jeter while we have him on the club. Afew years from now we will miss him!
If Javy doesn’t improve and he gets even a sniff of the Whitson treatment, I don’t see how he makes it here……and it would not reflect badly on Javy, it would reflect badly on Yankee fans.
Sunday its supposed to rain only in the morning. Will clear up by aftenoon so they should play SUnday as well.
““Fans” went even further than this. I believe people drove by Whitson’s house and harrased him.”

You ought to meet some of my clients.
For all of you who responded to my question.
Thanks.
Too many things can happen before Jeter gets to 3,000. Alomar and Griffey were sure bets. How did that work out? Remember that Clemente made it on his last ML at bat.
SJ, do you think that Javy is going to be worth 10 million for this season?
The Jeter countdown to 3,000 should start opening day next year. He’s not going to get there this season so it would be pointless to start a countdown that will be frozen Nov-Mar.
Who cares about Ed Whitson?
14-7 with 15 of 21 on the road is a helluva start. Especially considering Tex and NJ have been worse than awful and Alex hasn’t done much.
I think Saturday is really important for Vazquez. He’s had two decent starts through five innings and needs to show that to the home folks.
Re: Burnett/Pettitte
I think its high unlikely that both Pettitte and Burnett make it through a full season without a DL stint for the second year in a row. The laws of probability are just against that.
Hopefully whenever either one of them does hit the DL, it will not be serious and will not be for an extended amount of time. When that does happen, the Sergrio Mitre’es and Alfered Aceves’es of the world will have to pick it up.
Essentially, its bound to happen, but hopefully it won’t be too damaging when it does.
Guess The Line Up is now Open for Business.
I will take lineups until 3 p.m. or until one is posted here or on Twitter.
Good luck.
GB
The weather is great and a weekend is almost here. I look forward to seeing some Yankee wins this weekend. When the Yankees do get home, they will be awesome! LOL! (And tired)
Javy needs to pitch well on Saturday. I don’t think his spot in the rotation is in jeopardy. What he needs is a boost to his confidence and a good performance in front of the fans.
We all want him to do well. No better time then on Sat vs the white sox.
Yes, Vazquez will be worth the 10 million. At the very least he will give us 200 innings, which takes a lot of wear and tear off the rest of the pitching staff. The only concern I have is that he is injured, because his breaking pitches look flat and his fastball looks way off. I watched him a lot last year and his “stuff” looked completely different.
Considering how awful Vazquez has been too, he can pretty much only get better.
Really loving the match up between Javy and Danks.
I know its early in the season, but I wonder how much Cashman likes that deal now. I have a feeling he is feeling some buyers remorse.

Ok I will shut up for now,….. For Now!
Sugar Shane will win Saturday.. Anyone dissagree?
why would Cash be feeling buyers remorse.
some players get off to HOT starts(Cano) and other players get off to very slow starts(Tex, Johnson and Javy).
no need to push the panic button.
not necessary to send Javy to the bullpen just yet.
I think MLB security is a heck of a lot tighter than it was in the 80′s.
I remember night games where if the players didn’t make out of the clubhouse by a certain time, they were basically on their own for that 30-odd yard walk to the paring lot.

I hope you’re right. He has the fourth starter’s position. The pressure is off of him yet he has pitched like a dud. He will do ok in the middle of the season but come playoff time, he better be used for mop up duty.
He’s worth it because someone is paying him that money.
That’s always a foolish argument.
The guy has a track record of being a good pitcher. Four starts doesn’t change that anywhere but with a few upset Yankee fans and some media members who want to stoke the fire.
What a player makes has no impact in what they do on the field. Its just about making pitches and doing your job.

Ray, glad your weather is great. It’s been great here in the Coastal Empire, too.
I’m not sure which lunatic set up this schedule, but, it’s like nothing that i’ve ever seen before. Opening and closing the season in Boston, 21-27 on the road, playing 2 different 3 game series in Boston within a month before they ever play in NY.
At least when this silliness is over, they should have some long home stretches, so, if they play in Yankee Stadium this year like they did last year, it’ll be a long year for the AL. One thing that they need to do is play better in the Inter-League games. Had the played better last seaon, they would have been close to 110 games.

Enjoying your back and forth on the iPad (agree, not a good name). In the Date Night movie they used it to download a file from a flash drive, so I guess it’s different in that sense, too.
Oldest daughter was just telling me a story the other day when I mentioned how unwieldy it looks. She said she saw a very tall (basketball tall) guy and he had his iPad. He was navigating through his music (like you would on an iTouch or iPhone) and she thought it was just the funniest thing. Like an iTouch for a Giant. Anyway, she said it did look ridiculous.

Do yourself a favor and mooch off your friends pay per view.
M, I guess Joel Sherman likes to speak for all Yankee fans………he doesn’t speak for me.
Well if your talking about putting money down, Shane is at 4-1 odds, and is the epitome of a “live” underdog. Like I said, I don’t think he will win, but at those odds its not a bad idea to throw some cash on him.
mostly unrelated but I don’t know where you guys are checking your weather forecasts…it’s going to be 70+ and sunny the whole weekend. Sunday calls for an “isolated’ thunderstorm – hardly “rain in the forecast”. there will be no postponements this weekend.
“He’s worth it because someone is paying him that money.”
Scott Boras would agree.

People who know me consider me in the upper eschelon of empathetic people but on occasion I’ve been known to ask “What the hell were you thinking?”.
I would imagine fighting back that urge would be tough in your line of work but the answers you’ve probably heard to that question would make for a good book.

The schedule almost looks contrived against the Yanks. LOL! When you look at how RSox & Tampa were set up to win early against weak teams & RSox getting the Yanks early which usually favors them. They must be sulking in the MLB palace! Another plan gone awry.

I thought about adding Winn since he is hitting .385 against Garcia but I chickened out when I saw LHP the next 2 days. I almost took Gardy out. I couldn’t see Joe G taking out Granderson with Posada out too against a RHP. Good-Luck!

I clearly have issues today. I looked at your line up and it took me two minutes to figure out who Curtis is. I had two thoughts 1) Does she know Chad Curtis is no longer with the team? 2) Did they call someone up. LOL
Betsy – getting your weather from news12 is almost like asking “hi, what’s the wrong weather?”
http://www.noaa.gov is the only place anyone should check weather IMO.

I didn’t plan ahead. I only looked at the match up. We’ll see if my gamble pays off.
Justin Marchese could have been a character in “The Best Years of our Lives,” one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0036868/
Every year around Memorial Day weekend there are veterans standing outside shopping malls and supermarkets selling those little red poppies. Buy one and thank the old soldier or sailor or marine. Find “In Flanders Field” and give it a quick read and think of kids like Justin Marchese.
I will do GB! I’m not sure where I’ll be! LOL!

When boxing finds another Ali, Frazier, Leonard, Hearns, Robinson or Marciano, let me know. 90% of these guys couldn’t beat Chuck Wepner (The Bayonne Bleeder) or Jerry Quarrey.
Yea GB sounds like you haven’t watched boxing in a while. Not to mention that you are throwing out names from different weight divisions and from different eras of boxing that cover about 50 years. Not a proper comparison at all to just cherry pick names over a half a decade of prize fighting.
The one area of boxing that is lacking is heavyweight talent, because the best athletes that would have been heavyweight champs are linebackers in the NFL.

Didn’t they used to put the important boxing matches on free television? It was an event. I don’t really like the idea of boxing, but I loved the drama of it, the theater of it. That’s what you don’t see, really, anymore. No real characters – or none that are larger than life. Ali, Frazier, that era – people looked forward to it, made plans to watch together.
Just so we’re clear, Tex is basically going to go 5 for 5 tomorrow with 3 HR’s and 15 RBI, correct?
I’m really excited for this series this weekend.
Really pulling for Javy to come out dealing tomorrow. If he gets on a roll, and I believe he will, our starting pitching will be devastating.
It’s amazing how well we’re doing with so many big guys in the lineup scuffling. That’s a testament to the pitching and to Cano, Gardner, Jeter, Posada and the way guys like Thames and Cervelli are thriving in their roles.
When Arod, Granderson and Tex get hot, the rest of the league should just fold. Especially, if Cano stays hot with those 3 at the same time.
I’m not old enough for the other guys GB7 mentioned.
So, “The Tooth” is showing his ignorance again. Those I mentioned were legitimate champions from different eras and class weights for a reason. There’s nobody fighting today that were even close to those guys. Now, do you understand, Idiot?

It is also amazing how well the Yankees are doing given the amount of away games, the west coast trip, and playing, except for Baltimore, tough teams. The schedule gets easier from here.

These guys fought in the 50s, 60s, 70s and 89s, Doreen. All legitimate champions. Not made up champions of the Alphabet Soup of pro boxing. Everyone knew who was who. Today, they don’t even know the names. Back then, the trainers were better known than the boxers are today. Boxing has become as “entertaining” as rasslin’.

Matt (DC)
Do you think Robinson Cano can keep this power and consistency up this season?
Jayson Stark (1:07 PM)
I’m all in. The only thing keeping Robinson Cano from having this kind of year in the past was that he didn’t seem to grasp the kind of day-to-day commitment you need in baseball to get the most out of your talent. I get the sense he’s turned that corner now. And if he has, he’s as talented as any middle infielder alive.
GB 7 —
I agree boxing has faded dramatically due largely to the absence of a legitimate oversight/governing body. But Pacquiao, Mayweather and Mosely would be great fighters in any era.
Modern heavyweights are a joke… Leon Spinks could have held the title for five years in this era.
AH yes, back to calling me a “troll.”
I am not exactly sure what a “troll” is, but let me try and brake it down.

The Truth -
Only boxing afficionados know the participants today. Years ago, everyone knew these guys, even girls, like me. Boxing doesn’t command the same audience anymore. It really doesn’t. When I see coverage of an upcoming match buried in the sports pages, I’m truly taken by surprise.
Not saying these guys today aren’t good, because I wouldn’t know. And that’s really the point.
Mayweather and Mosley aren’t much better than Spinks or Buster Douglas. I wouldn’t watch a pro fight for free, much less pay to see it. Olympic and Golden Gloves are much better, until they turn pro and then they turn to slugs.
GB – don’t assume that because you don’t know the names, everyone doesn’t. Boxing used to be one of the premier sporting events, but it has fallen back in society to an also-ran. If all you ever expect to see is the greatest boxers EVER, then you should expect to be constantly disappointed.
Comparing any athlete 50 years ago to athletes today is just a bad joke.
“Mayweather and Mosley aren’t much better than Spinks or Buster Douglas.”
You said enough right there. Clearly you know absolutely nothing about boxing.

Boxing lost it when the promoters became bigger than the game. It’s too bad because a big boxing match could hold your attention for a few weeks.

Tyson would murder everyone mentioned. I mean that literally. He would actually kill everyone before the date of the event
A.J. was dealing last night. I remember one of his fastballs was clocked at 97. NICE!!!
I know his curve still needs some work, but when he can locate the fastball to both sides of the plate, we get results like last night.

I think MMA is more popular w/ the younger guys, at least it is w/ my son and his friends. Part of the appeal for him is that it incorporates wrestling moves (real wrestling, like what he did in high school, not fake wrestling like WWE)

Mine was different too. I have Granderson ahead of Swisher. Most have the reverse.
Boxing doesn’t have that big box office draw anymore like they did with Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard, Hagler, Hearns, George Foreman, and De La Hoya in the 80s and 90s.
Mayweather, Pacquiao, and the Klitschko brothers are great fighters. But people don’t come out in droves to watch them fight.
Dana White has done a remarkable job making MMA a mainstream sport. It wasn’t that long ago when the UFC was banned in most of the US.
NYYs have a higher batting average, a lower ERA and a better fielding team than the white sox, but, they always seem to have Pettitte’s number. 4 regulars over .300, not counting Beckham’s 2-3 or Ramirez’ 1-2 with a homer. He hasn’t been overly successful in his career against the White Sox.
http://www.baseball-reference......as=pitcher
Other than Rodriguez and Winn, nobody does well against Garcia. I’m not ready to call this game a walk-over for Pettitte and the Yankees, just yet.
I have a feeling I’m late on this… but I found this funny:
“In a case of mistaken identity, the bullpen coach was told “nice job pitching” by a fan before the game. Harkey, like C. C. Sabathia, the winning pitcher Wednesday night, is an imposing physical presence.”
Doreen
Didn’t do this too often because of the time difference. But do you really keep score?Any idea what my record is?.I’m guessing 0 for 6??lol
Cano is going to get walked probably 4 times tonight. Which means the hitter behind him needs to make the sox pay.
UFC was insane when it was banned. There were zero rules. If you knocked the guy down you could knee him in the face all you wanted. Matches ended by knockout or tapping. That was it. No decisions.
Roger,
You are 2 for 3.

———–
When was the last time Cano walked 4 times in a game? I don’t think he ever has. Hell, he rarely walks 4 times in a series.
Cano is so locked in right now that he’s not giving anyone a chance to walk him. If anything is close, he’s letting it rip and lining rockets all over the yard.

I’m not proud of my inability over the last 10 years to have the impact like I want to have, so I kind of feel like I owe fans an apology,” Cuban said. “But, that’s just the way this business goes. But congratulations to the Spurs.”

I agree that boxing has waned in popularity to an extent. Its really tough for me to agree that boxing is not a box office draw anymore, however, when boxers like Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather make over 30$ million per fight. Not to mention, the OLDH v. Mayweather fight set PPV records, and Mayweather v. Mosley will give that fight a run for its money in terms of PPV buys.
I am somewhat of an MMA fan, if not for nostalgia reasons. I watched UFC 1 back in the day with my grandfather, and he died soon after. It was one of the last things we ever did together.
