Yankees finally back home

After a train ride from Baltimore — where there were Yankees writers scattered throughout the Amtrak station — I’ve made it back to New York in time to finish a story for Sunday’s paper, pick up some mail at the post office and buy some groceries.
I’m taking a few days off this home stand, so Brian Heyman will have the lineup and notes from Yankee Stadium. Until then, how’s this for the Robinson Cano leader board?
Cano leads the American League in hits, runs, batting average and slugging percentage. He’s third in home runs, fourth in on-base percentage and fourth in extra-base hits.
“He’s in one of those zones right now,” Derek Jeter said. “Every player wants to be in it, but they come few and far between. It seems like everything he’s doing right now is perfect, and he’s playing as well as I’ve ever seen him.”

When will you stop calling every guy a hottie…?
miggs, you totally need a GTLU as-sistant. The only way you won’t repeat is if you don’t enter enough.
How long before the Defenestration of GTLU?
I know it is early in the GTLU season, but is there a minimum number of entries required to qualify as the season champ?
Does anyone wish the yanks woulda played Austin Jackson w the big boys to see what he had ?
I guess there wasn’t room last year on club though.
He certainly is doing well so far..
Nick how silly am I?
Prioritizing my paycheck over this sacred game.
That’s an excellent idea…. a GTLU assistant. I could dictate to him/her all my possible lineups in the morning. Then we can stick them all on a whiteboard and I can systematically eliminate lineups until I decide on my best guess. He/She can then post my guess on the blog.
What’s the most a staffing agency can charge me to fill that spot… $15/hr.?
Of course that means the assistant has to travel with me on weekends and hang out poolside during the summer. It would help if he/she knew how to mix a good drink also.
Roger
lol When the Yankees and the rest of sports are filled with Franck Riberys, Randy Johnsons, and Kevin Youkilises!

Michael Kay said on his show last week that the yankees offered Cano or another prospect
in the Arod trade. I never herd that before.
I actually have no idea what the rules are as I don’t really dabble in it, but I was just making a guess based on what I’ve seen on this board thus far.
1618 Nick, 1618.
Roger wouldn’t van Bommel tip the scales to Bayern for you to support?
IDCWYT:
I am going to base the winner on number of wins.
But I may award a second prize for best percentage.
miggs: $15/hour is what they’ll pay her, they’ll charge you a lot more.
You need to eliminate the middleman and get someone from craigslist, or, as I suggested in the previous thread, outsource it to Bangalore.
GTLU Is Now Closed for Today.
Andrew
No.I HATE van Bommel. He’s a good player but I don’t like the way he plays
But van Gaal might
If I based the winner on percentage, there would have to be a minimum number of games played to be fair.
I don’t play GTLU, but I have to admit I like the big reveal.
IMO the most correct entries should win.
You should be rewarded for having the dedication and commitment to submit a lineup most days.
van Bommel is definitely a bit of a hothead on the pitch. Figured you were putting country over playing style, though. The Dutch are loaded this year, they will be a major force in SA, can’t believe we’re almost at the point where it’s a month away…
Roger
I dont have any great dislike for Bayern or anything. I do, however, dislike van Gaal, as he looks like a punk!
I’ll be going for Mourinho (he is GORGEOUS!), as I appreciate his antics.
I came home in time to see the final whistle of the Barca/Inter match. And I saw Valdez trying to start trouble with the Special One for celebrating on the pitch! Good Stuff.
Joelsherman1 Not satisfied dept: Cano out for early hitting, joined by Cervelli, Swisher. #Yankees
Anyone ready to jump on the Cavs bandwagon atleast against the Boston Celtics?
RayVt – I almost didn’t myself, with the two lefties this weekend, but just decided to go with it. We’ll see.
Phil
Already there!!!!!!
Tom, you’re clearly playing the Czech defenestration game at a very, very high level.
I just don’t want any of these fine people to think that the Prague Spring ended with a defenestration (perhaps on par only with strangulation with piano wire as a preferred method of classical ass-ass-ination) rather than the crushing onslaught of Soviet tanks.
That would be sad.
Wow, good for Cano. With his work ethic and motivation, he’s going to have a phenomenal year, even after he goes into the inevitable slump.
CR9
I’m afraid to ask you about LeBron.
Why is he going to have an “inevitable slump”?
Does every post have to have a negative connotation?
Phil
ESPN was advocating the other day, intentionally hitting Lebron on his arm over and over again, to take him out of the series.
Hmmm, go figure, ESPN advocating injuring someone…
But I get attacked when I see the injury to Marte last year as a blessing in disguise! Because he came back to help us win a WS!
This was probably posted earlier. Ten most hated teams in baseball.
http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/.....mQjsZbXA5J
Very true, history must be protected Nick.
BTW, you seem to have a very firm grasp on Soviet/Russian history. Is it a hobby? College major?
miggs
that’s not a negative connotation. It’s a realistic observation.
Lebron = Muy Bonito!!
I’ll answer this once and then I’ll go back to ignoring you, Miggs. Give me a freaking break. Every player has a slump, it’s nothing personal against Cano. If I said the sky was blue, you’d argue. If you think Cano is going to hit .400, be my guest. If you think there are players that go through a season without hitting a lull, be my guest. That was a negative comment? Please!
CR9
One thing about LeBron he tends to make his injuries a little too dramatic for me. That being said, when I heard that I just laughed out loud because the man is a brick. Plus his best buddy is Shaq. “You don’t tug on Superman’s cape” and don’t mess with the King.

I never saw the initial exchange about the book itself. I am earnestly interested, so if you’d rather email me, that would be great. Whatever works for you: jjlearsfool@gmail.com.
We’re off to the Japanese uber-supermarket in Edgewater, so I’ll check the threads and email for your reply. It’s great when they have Japanese baseball on the big screen. Miggs-
since you’re the reigning GTLU champion, who will be the first Yankee to be dfa’d or traded this season? GWGAF [guess who gets axed first]
I guess I just don’t understand why you can’t just enjoy the torrid streak he’s on.
Instead you choose to focus on a hypothetical future negative which shows no signs of even being on the horizon.
Go back to ignoring my posts, do you think that bothers me?
Oh come on, you’re really reaching. I was complimenting his work ethic…. Look, I give up. If you want to think there is ANYTHING negative in what I said, that’s your business. LOL No, I certainly don’t think it bothers me if I ignore you; I’m only sad you can’t return the favor. Back to our regularly scheduled programming now…

I know.We’re loaded with talent.
There some great Dutch players right now:Van Persie,Sneijder, van der Vaart,Kuijt,Robben, van Nistelrooij, van Bommel and i’m not even counting van der Sar en Seedorf who aren’t on the team but are great players.
Look out for Elia en van der Wiel btw.Are you a Gunner?Because there a lot of rumors that van der Wiel will be a Gunner next year.
And I’m sure CR9 will think he’s a hottie..uhm!
Cano’s swing and plate discipline are looking more slump proof than any time I’ve ever seen him, and I’ve been on his trail at live games since he arrived in 2005.
If he stays intact, his dips will likely be short-lived.

That is true
tampayank
I’m sure he learned his lesson. Don’t think he will need to worry about it this year though.
Yankee Trader that’s a really really good question.
Who will be DFA’d or traded….. wow gimme a second to think here.
Last year it seemed like there was a group of guys in danger of being DFA’d right from the start of the season. They were mostly bullpen guys (Albaladejo, Edwar Ramizez, Veras) and I guess you could throw Cody Ransom in there. They all ended up being DFA’d at some point or sent down.
Right now with this roster, if I had to guess I’d say Boone Logan gets sent down when Park comes back, but that’s a cop-out answer. He got brought up when Park hurt his hamstring.
The position players seem set. I think Winn and Thames, based upon how they are performing right now, will make it through the season. I can’t see them trading or DFAing Pena or Cervelli. They aren’t going to trade or DFA a starter unless something drastically goes wrong.
The starting pitchers are set unless Vazquez continues to stink. But he makes too much money to trade in that case, and they won’t just release him. So you’re down to the bullpen. Mo, Joba, Park, Robertson, Marte, Aceves are all safe.
I really can’t see anyone on the current roster being DFA’d. Candidates for minor league demotions would be Logan, Robertson, MAYBE Aceves but probably not.
So to answer your question…. I have no idea. I’d be shocked to see anyone on the current roster traded or DFA’d anytime soon.
Pettitte is going for his 30th career april win, tonight. That’s the most Apriol wins in team history. Stottlemyre with 23 and Ford with 22 are next.
most ***April*** wins in team history
Wait I forgot about Mitre!
That’s my guess for first DFA….. Sergio Mitre.

cano is a stud, deal with it….
KO-
Its only CERTAIN Yankee fans with the problem.
They shall remain nameless to preserve the civility of the blog.
Were Sox fans in the 1960s waiting for Ted Williams’ average to drop?
Oh boy.I shouldn’t have said anything
Cano heats up in the second half, I wouldn’t be surprised if he hit .500
Geez… people are already worrying about Cano going in a slump, when he is just coming off a HISTORIC month where he hit .407?
How sad
Don’t worry, Tom.
Some of us got your joke.
Jerk,
I hope so. If Robbie continues to slump like this, we need to move him down in the order.
I had no idea there were experts on the Thirty Years War among the LoHud regulars. Defenestration of Prague indeed.
Speaking of Cano, probably too early to start talking about because they odds are long by default for anyone still in his 20′s, but Cano is the sort of hitter and had the career start that’d be conducive to a 3000 hit guy.
He’d gonna blow by 1000 before he’s 28. He’s a contact, .300+ avg hitter who doesn’t take a lot of walks, and he shouldn’t bat any lower than 5th for the upcoming prime of his career.
Assuming he stays healthy (big if of course) and plays to his talent, he will likely have 2000 by his 32 birthday.
Then would come the hard part…

Anyone notice that most of Cano’s HR are of the solo variety? Not worrying yet, but why can’t he hit HRs with runner on base?
I have to check, but I imagine most of his hits have come without anyone in base.
I definitely think Cano is in a slump. About 60% of the time he is getting out. That’s hardly acceptable.
I’m sorry, seriously, what IS it with some of you people (not including one)? I am not worried and if you think I am based on that mild comment, you all have problems. The fact that you can’t see that I was complimenting Cano is truly pathetic. Get a life.

Ha. I actually was thinking of causing hysteria here by mentioning the one time Cano was retired last night was with someone in scoring position.
What, you mean Cano might not hit .407 for the whole year?
Gasp
What’s next… Burnett and Pettitte are not going to record a loss this year?
And god forbid if MO blows a save.
“The position players seem set. I think Winn and Thames, based upon how they are performing right now, will make it through the season.”
Thames I get, but help me out on your Winn thinking. Think he turned the corner with that hit Wednesday night?
I didn’t say he was in a slump!
GLove, are you kidding me? Did you read my comment? Holy cow.
I know it’s not going to happen, but I wonder with Johnson struggling, if Girardi would just consider moving up Teixeira, Alex, and Cano in the order to 2,3,4.
Even though Mark has been struggling also, you move your best hitters up in the lineup to maximize their amount of ABs.
To be fair though, A-Rod and Tex aren’t really getting on that much. Cano has been coming to the plate with the bases empty a lot.
Marcus- arod and Tex need to get on base more.
Cano better not think about his avg falling below .400 or the stadium crowd is going to give hi mthe Vazquez treatment. Simply unacceptable for him for his average to dip even lower….
Cano’s HRs are solo because he is in a slump – duh.
Once he breaks out of it, they will turn into 2 and 3 run jacks.

Just looking at his splits— Cano has only 6 RBIs with the bases empty (all 6 on solo HRs), yet has 9 RBIs with runners on. Don’t know what to make of that. He has more RBIs with runners on, but more HRs with the bases empty…
“I know it’s not going to happen, but I wonder with Johnson struggling, if Girardi would just consider moving up Teixeira, Alex, and Cano in the order to 2,3,4.”
At 14-7, and having played 15 of those games on the road? Not a chance?
This is what Torre’s greatest strength was, managing a team (as opposed to a game) over 162 games.
I predict that when Tex finally starts getting on base, Robbie Cano will cool off.
“Cano is not a grindah like Pedrioahhhhhhh”-Francessa
Betsy,
I’m joking around. Nothing directed at you. No worries.
Well. It’s hard to get an RBI with the bases empty if it’s not a solo HR.

LOL. Touche
LOL Ok, so some posters agree with you, congratulations. I’m disappointed in a couple, but so be it. Hey, as Javy Vasquez said in response to Curt Schilling, everyone’s entitled to their opinion.

Sweeny has the lineup:
YankeesWFAN Jeter Johnson Teixeira ARod Cano Swisher Granderson Cervelli Gardner. Pettitte vs Garcia.
I don’t know how much colder Cano get get, he is already making outs almost 60% of the time.
Though if Tex gets hot, that might balance it out somewhat
GLove, glad to hear it; if you were serious, that wouldn’t be like you. Sorry I snapped, but given the circumstances, I think it was understandable.
I predict Texiera will hit 20 HR’s combined on Saturday and Sunday.
I think next season his wife and the Yankees should slip him some roofies and when he wakes up tell him he just woke up from a coma and it’s May even though it’s April. Of course they’d have to hide calendars from him and newspapers and such, but it seemed to work in that Drew Barrymore/Adam Sandler movie where she woke up thinking every day was the same one.
Should I wait to post the winners until I have the official lineup from Lohud???

“Dont confuse the results with the decisions. 14-7 we may be, having only had 6 home games, but who knows if a different lineup would have us at 15-6?”
But this is in fact the very issue the bridgejumpers and second-guessers don’t understand about baseball. You can’t judge games individually. Baseball has to be managed over 162 games, not 162 separate ways.
Good decisions lead to good results, which manifest themselves in professional baseball over week and months, not days and games.
“Results vs decisions” is what the second-guessers use to justify the constant criticism of line-ups and bullpen management. The problem is, few fans understand what are significant “results” in the game of baseball.
It’s hardly ever one game.

what do Sox fans think about Bellicheck delivering a hoodie to a division foe’s manager?*
Cano is too soft to handle all this success. He doesn’t have the grinding gutsy grittiness required to maintain a batting average at .400. After all the last guy to hit .400 over a full season was a real grinder, in fact he grinded so much that he got the nickname The Splendid Splinter from being such a gritty hard-noser.
CC said he feels depressed because CR9 didn’t think he was a hottie
in regard to tex’s aprils, the yankees should form a spring league and start their preseason in february, so maybe by april he is in month two.
Hey Bodhi,

Yankee Trader, I definitely did not say that, lol.
He said he acted (or thought he was) retarded, IF I heard him correctly. 1050 doesn’t come in all that clear……it was in reference to Obama knowing about his almost no-hitter in Tampa.
C.C. used the word, “retard” when describing himself in relation to a story he was sharing.
I honestly can not remember the question Kay asked and what C.C.’s words were from beginning to end.
No big deal.

Well, you lost me at bridge jumpers and second guessers. Because I am rarely going to criticize a manager for anything. And I was not criticizing Joe with that mere observation.
Dont confuse results with decisions was meant as a broad generalization of both sports and life.
Just because the referee in the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals tried to screw the Rangers with 2 seconds left in Game 7 by calling a phantom icing, does not mean that he was successful in his attempt to screw us.
The decision to screw us was there, but the result of screwing us out of a Stanley Cup was not!!!!!!
Andrew-You are so wrong. To use the term “soft” to describe Cano is ridiculous.
Cano is smooth. When he hits the ball, he is smooth. When he plays D, he is smooth.
Don’t confuse being smooth(like Rod Carew) with “soft”.
So wrong!!
so how long before Tex panic sets in, May 15th if he’s not above the Mendoza line?

I never said that! CC is the finest piece of filet mignon on the team. His smile is blinding, his size is awe-inspiring!!! He is DELICOUS
http://www.baseball-almanac.co.....avg1.shtml
If you’re interested in players who have batted .400 or better plus highest batting averages per position check this out.
Christ almighty, enough with “The refs are out to get every team I like” talk. They are not out to get your teams. Sometimes they make mistakes, sometimes they make the right calls that you just don’t agree with. You are in for quite a rough sports life if you keep this nonsense up.
CC kind of danced around the question of retaliation. Says he knows
Guthrie wasn’t doing it on purpose but also said he has hit a lot of our guys before and shouldn’t come inside if he can’t control it, yet he continues to do it anyway
CC didn’t retaliate, yet suggested or implied that it was necessary…
Tex will be fine. Imagine if he ever got off to a fast start, you’re talking 40+ homeruns.
But I have a feeling we are watching something special with Robbie this year. We could be looking at 35+ hr, 100+ Rbi season. A breakthrough.
Judge
I dont like the Mavericks! The referees screw all teams. Why? Because they are criminals!
‘so how long before Tex panic sets in, May 15th if he’s not above the Mendoza line?”
Fans have to realize (and I trust they will) the same thing Teixeira needs to understand. It only matters what he does from this point forward. Whether he finishes at .290 or .280 or .260 doesn’t matter.
just have a good May, then June, then July, then August, then September. If the Yanks make the postseason, what his year-end numbers (dragged down by April) are won’t matter a lick.
I just want him to have a solid month, not make up for April, which is somewhat akin to hitting a 5 run homerun.
Red Sox have some of the fuggliest players in baseball – Papelbon, Youkallis, Lackey, Schoenweiss, Pedroia, Drew (if he was bigger and didn’t have that weird hairline, he would be much hotter).
But man, do they have some attractive players or what – Beckett and Ellsbury to begin with… Buchholz isn’t bad. Scutero and Delcarmen not bad either.
Warning Track Power my comment was meant as a joke. I know all the proper adjectives for describing Cano’s game, don’t worry. My post was meant more as a dig at all the people who take the gritty/gutty nonsense to heart when trying to describe players’ talent (or lack thereof)
HIS FACTS ARENT EVEN RIGHT!!!
is was 252 not 242, it was boras who leaked the story, not arod.
Wasnt their 3rd baseman that day in toronto mcdonald?
telling braden to hit arod?
why are these writers allowed to exist?
Watching Cano play so well this month has been fun to watch. For a couple yrs Yankee fans have been asked when/if Cano will be ready to assume the #5 hitter slot.
Guess what? He’s now ready and if you ask me, the people who said letting Matsui go sure are hush-hush right about now.
Chad has completely lost GWYBWWPTLUFT
(Guess Which Yankee Beat Writer Will Post The Line Up First Today)
Andrew-You are so wrong. To use the term “soft” to describe Cano is ridiculous.
Cano is smooth. When he hits the ball, he is smooth. When he plays D, he is smooth.
Don’t confuse being smooth(like Rod Carew) with “soft”.
So wrong!!
___
Sorry Cano doesnt make everything look more difficult than it actually is like Pedroia does everyday.
Warning Track, you are right. Cano is stepping up, and taking opportunity by the throat. We could be looking at our next great Yankee. People compared him to Rod Carew when he came up, and it was unfair. But you know what…
Line up is up
New Post: Tonight?s lineup vs. Chicago
OK… what is the deal with the word scuffling.
I know what it means, I heard it already years ago.
But lately I hear it, and read it all the time.
It seems like it is the ‘ in ‘ word right now, and contagious. being repeated and repeated.
Let’s Go, Yankees!!
